in the north bay. high temperatures could see about 70 degrees in some neighborhoods and a quick cooling this evening. we are going to see more cool area in the bay area for the week ahead. i'll have that in a few minutes. >> thank you, katie. developing news from north korea wherefore the first time we are hearing from the palo alto man who is being held captive. he's been there for more than a month now. abc7 news reporter ama daetz shows us the video posted by the news agency. it shows 85-year-old newman reading an apology letter. >> these are the first agages we are seeing from merrill newman since he was detained more than a month ago. he's reading from what is called an apology letter that explains what he did against the north when he fought in the north korean war. >> they collected information of the dprk and they attacked communication systems and killed three innocent operators. >> the korean central agency report said he masterminded espionage and subversive activities against the dprk and in this course he was involves in killing army personnel and innocent civilians. earlier this week his wife broke her silence, pleading for his release. >> we hope whatever the misunderstanding is will be resolved very quickly and that he can return and be at our table for the holidays. >> what is not clear is who wrote the alleged apology letter. in the past the north korean government has been accused of coercing statements from detain. in the video newman promised to tell the truth about the country if they let him go. a possible indication of his release. >> i can understand that in u.s. and russian countries there is misleading information and propaganda about dpr of k. >> abc news has contacted the state department to see if they have reviewed the video and have anything to stay about it. we've also reached out to through man's family in the bay area. so far no wore from either. ama daetz, abc7 news. >> newman is a korean war veteran. he was on a ten-day trip to the country last month but was removed it from his plane by government officials just as his flight was there to take off. that was october 26th. his family has had no contact with him since. >> developing news in alaska. a commercial plane crashed last night in a remote village, killing four of the people on board. air alaska flight 373 was a single engine turbobot 208. the flight from bethel to saint mary's village went down near its destination about 470 miles from anchorage. the pilot was killed, and three passengers, including a baby boy. the condition of the six surviving people are not no one. the state spokeswoman said they are assisting the survivors. also developing news in africa. a mozambique plane has crashed, killing all 33 people on board. that's 27 passengers and six crewmembers. a deputy police member said it crashed in a national park near the border with angola. no word on what went wrong there. a major search and rescue operation continues this hour at a crowded public in glasgow, scotland after a helicopters crashed in the roof. we have an update. we know three people have died in the crash and 32 others are in the hospital. there were more than 100 inside the club attending a live music event when the chopper crashed last night. patrons reportedly formed a human chain to pass injured victims out the door. search and rescue teams are make sure everyone is accounted for. all lanes of the dumbarton bridge are open again after a fatality on the bridge. the bridge crosses the south bay and reopened to traffic just after 1:00 this morning. it was shut down at 11:00 last night to investigate the beth of a pedestrian who was hit by several vehicles on the westbound side near the poll -- the toll plaza. the man was dressed in black and had been walking in lanes. a north bay police officer made his 100th drunk driving arrest of 2013 this week. >> i firmly believe that it does save lives, and that's one of the main reasons i do the job. >> officer kevin mcdougle of the san rafael police department has received awards from mothers against drunk driving in each of the last six years and he could receive another this year. early thursday morning he made his 100th dui arrest of the year after pulling over a driver who ran a red life. -- a red light. his commanding officer told us his extra efforts are making a difference. >> he's made our community a lot safer. he's probably kept a lot of people from getting on the street intoxicated, and that just goes to his level of dedication. >> it's just something that i like to do and i have done for a long time. i think i'm pretty good at it. >> officer mcdougle said he looks for obvious violations like speeding or running a light or stop sign, and he says about half the people he arrests for dui thought they were okay to drive. happening today, the shopping focus shifts from big box retailers and major chains to small businesses. mom and pop shops will take part in small business saturday it's nationwide and in the bay area. people are encouraged to patronize their locally-owned stores. event was started in 2010 by a credit card giant, american express, but it quickly received the endorsement of the u.s. senate and small business administration. thousands of shoppers in the bay area hit the big stores for black friday yesterday. but among the deal seekers, demonstrators were also out in force protesting wal-mart. abc7 news reporter allen wrong captured the scene outside of the store in san leandro. >> you are ordered to disburse. >> about 150 people demonstrated in the southbound lane in front. the san leandro wal-mart. many of them in green t-shirts are part of an organized group of former and current wal-mart employees complaining of low wages and retaliation for attempting to organize. >> we as workers have a legal right to seek out when our employers are not treating us right. >> there is no intimidation, no retaliation here at wal-mart. in fact, we have processes for association to speak with management. >> i make $8.65, and it's hard to pay rent. you know, once you pay all your bills, you have nothing left. >> in california the average hourly wage is over $13 an hour. 401-k benefits and health insurance that starts as low as $18 a pay period. we know we have good jobs. >> one minute later five were arrested for civil disobedience. but their sacrifices still could not stop some of their own sympathizers from shopping at wal-mart. this man said he had to buy trash bags and pip towels. -- paper towels. >> are they going to stop you from supporting wal-mart? >> i'm supporting my kids, not the business. >> this store continued to have a steady stream of business throughout black friday. in san leandro, alan wang. abc7 news. >> 15 people were arrested during a protest at a wal-mart in roseville near sacramento. nearly 100 protesters were outside of the store for about two hours yesterday. but 15 people broke off to the protest and marched to a busy intersection and sat down. police said they were arrested for failing to disburse. despite a few problems, most black friday events went smoothly. many said it wasn't as crowd as expected. sales are spreading out because so many shop online or through mobile devices. ibm benchmark, that tracks e-commercial for retailers said online sales on black friday rose 9% from last year. ebay saw a 35% increase and amazon saw a 25% increase. for some customers the deals this year just didn't turn their heads. >> i thought it would be better. i mean, you see commercials on tv that say, you know, flat screens for $100. i didn't see any kind of that stuff. there are some good savings in there. >> retailers that opened early on thanksgiving day still say they saw relatively big crowds, an indication of what might be a new shopping tradition. store sales numbers will be released later today. check out this time-lapse video showing the hordes of shoppers marching through san francisco's union square yesterday. macy's in union square has been busy since its early opening thanksgiving night at 8:00. cyber monday is two days away and that's what millions of bargain seeking customers will go online to continue shopping. cyber monday sales last year tripled to almost $1.5 billion compared to 2011. this year's figure is expected to be higher and could be the biggest on record. >> developing news. in bart negotiations. two unions who went on strike twice this summer are now set to sue bart. it's over a family medical leave clause that bart claims was a mistake in the contract. it would have given workers up to six weeks paid family leave a year. bart removed the clause earlier this month before approving the contract. the union say the removal is an assault on the collective bargaining process. 6:10 on your foggy saturday morning. >> yeah, all the way down the coast, as well. but it is going [ female announcer ] everyone you love has something they need to hear this holiday. tell them with a hallmark card. >> this morning vallejo police are investigating a fatal shooting inside an apartment complex. the police won't say much about what led to the killing and the victim's identity has not been released. police are be looking for a man who robbed a bank of america bran inch walnut creek yesterday. these are surveillance photos of the robbery in the rossmoor shopping center. he went into the bank at 5:00 p.m. and handed over a note demanding money. he's a white man in miss 20s, about 6 feet tall with a thin build and a light goatee. hopping today a carr wash in oakland will serve as the place for a fundraiser in honor of a 23-month-old killed two years ago in a parking lot during a robbery. he was shot outside of a liquor store on 7th and willow streets when police say two man shot into a crowd because they thought it included rival gang members. proceeds will go toward a scholarship fund benefiting his sibling. >> thanks to our viewers, especially a very generous one. a peninsula pop warner football team will contend for the national championship in florida next month. we have the story. >> good to see you guys >> reporter: when the call came for an unexpected team meeting, no one expected good news. >> we were making a final plea. >> a seemingly impossible one. when we told you about the bay city bulldogs on thanksgiving day, it was a story of hope in the midst of despair. they are an elite pop warner football team. so good they qualified for the national super bowl tournament in florida. they are are on top of the world with their backs against the wall because they needed to raise $40,000 with a go or no-go decision this weekend and donations running dry. >> there's no way i can look their eyes and tell them we can't afford it, but that is what the parents and team expected. >> it will be devastating. >> we need to make a little more. >> a lot more actually. >> the $20,000 more still impossible, or maybe not. there was a moment in the thanksgiving story from patrick nunn when he described his frustration when asking for donations. >> they think we are just a bunch of teenagers trying to get money. >> what are you? >> we are football players. >> that got to me. >> oh, did it ever. because zach nelson is the ceo of next suite and he made a difference. >> let me know what you need to make under the difference to go and we will figure out a way to do it. >> after a team meeting players and parents prepared for the bad news. instead they heard the name zach nelson. >> and he's donating $20,000. will have plenty of sunshine this afternoon because high pressure is in command, despite the poor visibility and the spare the air day today. we are looking at things along the embarcadero, the roof camera pretty good. no problems there. and temperatures ranging from the upper 40s san francisco to the 40s across the bay, on the peninsula. half moon bay has the fog all wait down to salinas. the sunrise look pretty good. notice the clouds are really right down at the surface. not everyone is experiencing it. livermore, 41. good morning. novato. santa rosa coming in at 41 degrees. so from the airport at a quarter mile visibility to just about nothing half moon bay, a little deucey in the half moon bay from novato and napa, as well. but for concord this afternoon, another fair afternoon with the sky condition less than ideal. so we do have a spare the air again. the fourth of the winter season. the mild pattern does last through tomorrow, though. then look at the much cooler weather headed our way much of next week. the cooling begins on monday. so the air quality taking the hit in the north bay. so we really need to refrain from the burning and medium air quality from the east bay, central bay and into the santa clara valley. here's a look at our pacific satellite picture. you will notice the high clouds to the north will continue to sweep south. as high pressure noses into the eastern pacific, we will have the mild temperatures. the flow around the high allowing for a slight offshore push, and that will bring us up again well above average. so throughout the morning hours the cloud cover and then by the middle of the morning, probably about 10:00, 11:00, mostly sunny conditions throughout the afternoon and we with will look for really similar conditions with very little change electric day-to-day. in fact, tomorrow we could see a few degrees of warming, but today well up into the 60s. clear lake 67. look for a san francisco coming in in the mid-60s. the light offshore flow in the upper elevations. still very mild through the 1:00, 2:00 afternoon hour. 69 morgan hill. mid-60s santa cruz as well as point reyes. the accuweather seven-day forecast, steady pattern with mild temperatures continues. stronger on shore push brings the numbers down about five to seven degrees monday. we will continue to see the drop in temperatures, cooler, breezier, maybe a sprinkle could happen anywhere from tuesday, wednesday or thursday with the cool unsettled pattern and it's going to be hard to budge, but high pressure looks to build in next weekend. abc7 news has >> it is a chance share stories, memorabilia and sing favorite pony songs from the series. ♪ or a dance. they are rebel against ender and social stereotypes. >> people make fun of me, but i don't really care. >> it's weird that we are watching "my little pony." we are teenage guys. we shouldn't be doing that. >> it's different. >> it doesn't really matter. so what if it's weird? working at the gap to bring attention to her cause. she's donating her paycheck to roots of peace, the nonprofit she founded that helps rebuild war-torn regions. >> couldn't they have a better place to be in bridging the gap for peace worldwide. >> the gap connection was made by her daughter, kailee, a new york based model who was chosen as one of the faces for gap's holiday campaign. the company chose her in part because of her charity work. she accompanied her mother to afghanistan and went on to raise $500,000 to build two schools there. a photo shoot kept her from work at the gap, but her brother joined in to help. >> you can't help but having to been to all the countries we do work to think about everyone who is not living the best life we have here in california. >> their work, especially in afghanistan, is more critical than ever. u.s. forces are withdrawing and will be out next year. opium production is increasing. roots of peace helps farmer replace poppies with grapes pattern right on through tomorrow. in fact, i think we are going to see temperatures come up a few degrees as this ridge builds out ahead of an area of low pressure bringing in a much cooler air mass that will settle on in here for the upcoming work week the first week of december. and finally, from our roof camera, you can see the fog kind of making for a nice shot. but the air quality all across the bay okay. in the north bay look pretty hazy. but a spare-the-air day because air quality is less than ideal for no woodburning throughout the day and evening. this is our fourth spare the air day for the winter season. high pressure as it noses in to california. you notice we have a little bit of cloud cover here. we have a light offshore flow in the higher elevations. that means temperatures well up into the 60s. again, with plenty of sunshine. but it will be that hazy afternoon sunshine in parts of the north bay. 67 in chico and look for low 50s in tahoe. so they have been making snow waking up to temperatures in the teens. and in the afternoon pretty mild, though, in the 50s there. yosemite, about 60 degrees today. today more mid-and upper 60s for most out there. 68 oakland. palo alto coming in at 67. san jose in the upper 60s. and the accuweather seven-day forecast, we will see the temperatures just a few degrees warmer than the warmest day of the next seven will be tomorrow. we will look for temperatures to taper off as the stronger on shore push brings the temperatures down, as much as five to seven degrees. tuesday, wednesday, thursday, maybe a sprinkle with numbers
