public. this is about a picture of a handful of cars truckling through, but they are among the first. bore number 4 opened just after 4:00 this morning. our photographer on the scene captured that moment when the sign changed from closed to open and the first clouds drove through under police escort. last night workers worked to lee con figure the number 2 bore to be permanently dedicated to eastbound traffic. caltran said reverse commuters will see the biggest benefit with an average ever five minutes taken off their >> i think it's going to help at least the people in orinda who commute into the city during the weekend. that's usually one bore that's open w two open now i think that will relieve some of the congestion that we see on the weekend. >> he's right. caltran said the most torts emerged from their closed-door meeting after three hours. in a 7-1 vote they decided to go back to the bargaining table with the unions. >> it's important to try to find a middle ground, to address this issue. >> they call it a clerical error. the tentative contract said employees can receive six weeks of paid leave under the federal medical leave act. they didn't expect it to be in the package. >> they never discussed it. >> the bart board of directors came up with a chart detailing the cost of the fmla provision. they said it would cost $42.2 million over four years which is more than half the cost of the entire agreement but the union said a deal is a deal. >> i don't see how it's an honest mistake. you signed it, we signed it. >> bart riders are frustrated. >> i just don't want to have another strike. >> former chief negotiator thomas hock is out. a new chief negotiator will be named soon. abc news. >> police found an 8-year-old boy and a man with stab wounds last night. he's rushed to the trauma center. man is out of the hospital. police arrested 38-year-old lisa. she's in jail on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment and all felonies. police say they found both victims on scott street near matthew drive after getting 911 calls about a disturbance. the investigation is ongoing and police would like to hear from anyone who might have witnessed what led up to the attack. new this morning, san jose police are investigating a fatal shooting. police were called to west san carlos street around 7:30 last night. that's where they found a man who had been shot at least once. he was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. police have no suspects in custody, but the investigation is just getting started. this is san jose's 41st homicide of 2013. last year the city have 46, the highest number in 20 years. san rafael police need help identifying a bank robbery suspect. take a look. this video clearly shows a man police say robbed a citibank branch yesterday morning around 11:00. he that some type of handgun or modified weapon during the robbery. if you recognize him, do not approach him. he is considered armed and dangerous. just call 911 or the police. tips can be turned in anonnously and they could earn you cash rewards. batkid has saved the city, captivated our hearts. yesterday the city of san francisco was transformed into gotham city to make five-year-old's miles scott's wishes of becoming a superhero come true. we recap the amazing day. >> reporter: as batkid emerged in a lamborghini bat mobile, it was the beginning of a day-long adventure. one much of the city cheered on and is still cheering. >> in san francisco we don't really have a lot of kidsism think there are a lot of us thinking, yes, we get to do something fun for a kid. >> batkid, also known at five-year-old miles scot, helped disarm a mysterious device. >> that's it! you got it! >> and free a damsel in distress who was tied to the tracks of the cable car line. and foil the riddler's plan for a major heist. >> who is there! >> the greene-suited villain was led off to the clink, and the batkid was met with growing applause from the crowd. but the action wasn't over because the penguin took san francisco giant's mascot lou seal hostage. he had to set him free and take another villain. but wait, there's more! >> i want to thank the batkid for saving our city! >> mayor ed lee handed him a key to the city and cheering crowd at the civic center got their final word from the boy hero. miles is a cancer survivor and when his leukemia went into remission he asked for this wish. the bay area chapter of the make-a-wish foundation got to work. the san francisco police chief greg suhr became one of the leading characters." he helped entertain the batkid and helped put the day together. >> he's our hero. i mean, i don't know. it's great. >> san francisco loves batkid, indeed. abc7 news. >> the department of justice even got into the act, sending out this news release about the indictment of the riddler and the penguin. it reads, if not for the heroic action of one miles, aka batkid, they surely would have been successful. >> way to go, miles, way to save gotham. #*! >> president obama even got involved in a video posted on "the vine." he then tweeted this photo of miles running down hyde street. he encouraged people to follow him at #sfbatkid. that hashtag, by the way, so popular, at one point we measured more than 20 tweets per second. and #sfbatkid was trending all over the try. police chief greg souray's son designed these batkid t-shirts. they originally expected to sell 300 and they sold 3,000. they are sold out now but there will be more. we have a link on our music conference and the pain from shingles just made it impossible to even want to move. i couldn't play my bassoon because of the pressure that i felt throughout my whole head. eventually i noticed that i had these little blisters up on my forehead and they started spreading. the blistering and the rash was moving down towards my eye. the doctors at the emergency room recommended that i have it checked out by an eye doctor. there was concern about my eyesight. i eventually learned that if i had chickenpox i was susceptible to getting shingles as an adult. i couldn't do the things i loved bus said he's not homophobic and said the crime should not be considered a hate crime. 18-year-old luke suffered first and second -- second and third-degree burns in the attack. sasha, who was born a male, was wearing a skirt when a 16-year-old student from oakland set him on fire. according it our media partner the contra costa times, the teen's lawyer calls it an ill-considered prank that went seriously wrong. the judge granted a hearing for the defense challenge for prosecuting the suspect as an adult. a man wanted for a horrific attack on a homeless woman in san francisco last week has been arrested. 28-year-old timothy chase was taken into custody yesterday at his home in oakland. police say chase is the man this surveillance video. you see him walk up to a person sleeping on the sidewalk and stomp that person's head repeatedly. they found chase after getting tips from people who recognized him in the video. the victim refused medical treatment. captured on video, police made several arrests in san francisco after they say a crowd turned hostile yesterday. police say a man ran from him through his home through the apartment after they tried to give him a bike citation. neighbors and family thought police were too brutal. three people tried to intervene and were also taken into custody. two officers and the suspects were injured. police say they used reasonable force during the arrest. >> a shocking discovery at the menlo park post office. it's a story you will only see on abc7 news. social security numbers and other personal information on a pad of scratch paper. a customer made the discovery at the post office. >> i first thought this promotes identity theft. i mean, it's right there for anybody to pick up. >> the supervisor said he doesn't know how it happened, but says there will be an investigation. >> emergency efforts are underway around the clock to get water and said to typhoon survivors in the fill fines. survivors are hungry, dehydrated and at risk for disease. official death count stands at 1139 but more than 3600 are estimated to have died. and hundreds are displaced. officials are focusing on getting help to survivors. >> we are done with the rescue and retrieval. now we have to clear the major thoroughfares and make passage more possible. >> after days of delay the pace of the relief operation is picking up with more food, water, medical aid reaching the disaster zone. happening today, there will be a typhoon haiyen fundraiser. it is from 1 could 4 this afternoon. it will take place at the daly city united methodist church on south gate avenue just west of interstate 280. monday there will also be a fundraiser. you en can make donations to the relief fund from red cross through a live hotline right here on abc7. starting this early january, parking at the larkspur ferry terminal will know longer be free. the board of directors approved a two dollars fee yesterday. fee will not be collected on weekends or major holidays. although you can get a monthly pass for $20. get ready for fresh crab. take a look at the first dungeonness crab of the season. rough seas kept most boats docked and high winds are expected to keep many of them that way until tonight. fishermen are expected to get three dollars a pound for their catch, and that means you will pay around $5.50 to six dollars a pound. this is the first year of a new state law that limits the number of traps trappers can carry on their fishing boats. they are glad to be back out there and working but the weather is not especially cooperating just fog not much of an issue. and the exploratorium camera showing that we are looking pretty quiet this saturday morning. but the cool numbers for sure up in the north bay with mid-30s santa rosa. napa, 39 in novato. low 40s for livermore. upper 40s in concord so we are looking at that chilly start to the day. the afternoon is cooler than we are used to. it is the middle of november. we've been waiting for the big dome of high pressure to finally give way and there are sign necessary the week ahead we could see some changes. chilly this morning with a few clouds. sun and clouds for not only today but tomorrow, as well. and that chance of rain first coming into play in the north bay on tuesday. then it looks like wednesday and thursday the rest of the bay. in fact, the rest of the state could see a chance of showers. maybe some high-elevation snow as well. sod to this is the setup for the partly cloudy and cooler conditions with the energy or the moisture staying well to the north of us. but if you are up in cloverdale, santa rosa, points north, you may notice a few clouds around. this morning the clouds are from san francisco on south. and the look ahead throughout the middle of the week, here comes that better chance of rain come wednesday and thursday. right now it's still about five days out. so hard to pinpoint the confidence level of this and if we do see the rain how much. but at least we are showing signs of perhaps a zonal flow from the ridge beginning to weaken. that could open the storm door. 63 for san jose. look for 64 los gatos. comfortable temperatures by the afternoon, about 3:00. 62 san mateo. notice the low clouds and fog in satisfy moon bay. onshore flow keeping the numbers cooperate breezy here from the sunset district. san francisco 61 today. newspaper north bay a few clouds electric time to time but low 60s should do it for you. around cloverdale and 64 in sonoma. low 60s for oakland. 46 astro valley. you head inland temperatures will be to yield 150,000 pounds of fruit. the homeowner's husband planted them before he died in 2006 and she doesn't want to see the fruit go to waste again. a nonprofit that harvests backyard fruit and vegetables to feed the needy has stepped up. >> we hope to harvest 50,000 pounds. that's enough food to feed 10,000 people for a day. that would go a long way to make a happy thanksgiving. >> more back. lisa has the weather. >> we are looking at chilly temperatures in the north bay. a cooler morning for most. anywhere from two to four degrees cooler from fremont to san jose. north bay we have about six degrees of cooling. the rest of the day we will look for partly cloudy skies, breezy and cooler for most with temperatures on the coast upper 50s to the low 60s. around the bay it should be in the low 60s. and inland temperatures in and around the 64, 65-degree mark with perhaps an outside number of 66. so we are talking about the more typical temperatures, when are we going to see some the first cars were escorted through with a police escort. last night workers reconfigured the number 2 bore to be permanently dedicated to eastbound traffic. reverse commuters will see the biggest benefit during peak hours with an average of five minutes cut from their commute. >> from oakland side to the orinda side in the morning will experience for the first time two bores open for them, which should hopefully keep the opposite direction moving faster. >> caltran said the most dramatic change will be for people heading into san francisco on weekends. there used to be just one tunnel open, but now there are two. president obama says improved energy efficiency and higher energy production in the u.s. are helping the environment and the economy at the same time. in his weekly address the president draws attention to increased u.s. oil extraction. last month it exceeded oil imports for the first time in nearly two decades. it's a topic the president discussed on thursday while dooring a steel plant in cleveland. >> that's a big deal. that's a tremendous step toward american energy independence. business is important too. we reached this milestone in part not only because we are producing more energy, but because we are wasting less energy. >> so far -- >> for the republicans, senator ron johnson of wisconsin was criticizing the affordable care plan. he said the statement that americans could keep their current plans amounts to, quote, political fraud. >> more 3,000 house democrats broke ranks with the republicans to vote. a bill was approved yesterday 261 to 157 votes yesterday. it would allow insurers to extend health plans that do not comply with obamacare to all americans last year. -- through next year. it came after a backlash from people whose policies were being cancelled. opponents say the bill will strip important consumer protections. >> that idea that it was helping consumers was sort of the trojan horse whose underbelly is poisonous with -- in terms of the health and well-being of the american people. >> the president has already vowed to veto the bill. democrats in the house say they voted for it because of pressure from voters. i'm accountable to the people who sent me here and i'm going to make sure i listen to them and do what i can to support them when they have problems and concerns and that's what i'm doing in this case. >> the president offered his own fix on thursday. it would allow insurers to extent health plans for existing customers until october, 2014. that's an extra year to adapt to new rules. yesterday he met with insurance executives to build support for his proposed fix. >> programmers based in san francisco has created an online tool to help consumers deal with the troubled website. their website is called shurpa health. the creators got an idea they tried to sign up for an insurance plan on healthcare.gov. it took about two days and a couple hundred dollars to build. one of the creators spoke with abc7 news via skype. >> we thought when we first started we could create a much more usable experience than what healthcare.gov was offering in terms of finding the plans themselves. >> to be clear, you can't use it to sign up for a health plan, just to search for one. when you are on the site you will enter your zip code and income level. lyanne melendez has the details. >> the median high school grade point average for incoming freshmen at cal is 4.19 on a 4.0 scale. that's because so many take extra credit courses just to try to get in. but not every student, including some athletes, arrive here with those high marks. >> i believe they should be held to the same standards as students at berkeley because the whole school is a school of excellence. >> and that's coming electric a freshman football player at cal. even though he was accepted with a 3.6 gpa. but the university says it looks at other factors other than academics when selecting students and never picks someone who is bound to fail. we know they have so much else to bring to the campus community and we know they have skills and abilities that might not be captured by grades and sat scores. >> i'm not strong in sciences and i don't focus on taking science classes. you work with your strong points and i guess for them it would be sports. >> except the cal football team hasn't really performed well this year. in the pac-12 conference they are 0 for 7. u.c. president had this to say about the team. >> the cal football team obviously is having some troubles right now. the number one concern i have is not the record, it's the graduation rate. >> the national collegiate athletic association found that between 2003 and 2006 only 44% of football players of cal graduated. the most recent numbers are not out yet. >> they are leaving early. we have work to do on that front and we know. the athletic director already said she will be assembling a task force. we want to look at it in its entirety in a comprehensive nature. >> they want it closer to the overall number, which is 90%. abc7 news. >> 6:47. thanksgiving is so late this much cooler here. the skies cleared earlier through the overnight hours in the north bay. that's why temperatures have dropped and, of course, the valleys here allowing for the cooler air to drain into the valleys. 46 in fairfield. concord good more than, 48 for you and 43 in livermore. from our sutro tower it is a quiet start to the day. although you may notice the breeze in the higher elevations and at the coast today we are looking at winds kicking up to over 20 miles an hour. so a chilly morning translating into a partly cloudy afternoon for the day today. and we will look for a chance of rain as early as tuesday in the north bay. in fact, the north coast right now looking at shower activity from crescent city and the weak weather system that not only will bring a few clouds around today, but also enhancing the on shore flow around the bay area. so if you are headed way up to the north, just a few sprinkles. not even managing much up by mendocino. but as we go through the rest of the weekend, the cloud cover will be with us throughout the afternoon and tomorrow. that will give us a partly cloudy day and temperatures once again in the 50s and 60s. so a couple of neighborhoods shy of average today. we should see about 67 in san jose. mid-60s today. plenty of sun and dry in suggesten california with about 75 in palm springs. a few showers up towards eureka with 51 in the northern sierra. 54 in the southern sierra. temperatures today, a little cool. san francisco should afternoon about 63. going for a high of 61 today. it will be breezy, 62 san mateo. up in the north bay some of the warmer numbers with 65 napa. also up by the delta talking 65 antioch, 64 in the livermore valley and the accuweather seven-day forecast shows that tomorrow, with the partly cloudy sky once again, 50s coast, 60 around the bay. a little bit more sun on monday and maybe showers on tuesday. everyone on wednesday and clear out thursday. and sunnier and warmer into next quarterback terrelle pryor may not be able to play sunday in houston for the raiders. he suffered a setback on friday on his sprained right knee. that means backup matt mccloin could start against the texans. he's an undrafted rookie who started training camp as number four on the depth chart. he's last man standing now. last played a couple weeks in the fourth quarter against philadelphia throwing public. this is about a picture of a handful of cars truckling through, but they are among the first. bore number 4 opened just after 4:00 this morning. our photographer on the scene captured that moment when the sign changed from closed to open and the first clouds drove through under police escort. last night workers worked to lee con figure the number 2 bore to be permanently dedicated to eastbound traffic. caltran said reverse commuters will see the biggest benefit with an average ever five minutes taken off their >> i think it's going to help at least the people in orinda who commute into the city during the weekend. that's usually one bore that's open w two open now i think that will relieve some of the congestion that we see on the weekend. >> he's right. caltran said the most want to have another strike. >> former chief negotiator thomas hock is out. a new chief negotiator will be named soon. abc news. >> police found an 8-year-old boy and a man with stab wounds last night. he's rushed to the trauma center. man is out of the hospital. police arrested 38-year-old lisa. she's in jail on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment and all felonies. police say they found both victims on scott street near matthew drive after getting 911 calls about a disturbance. the investigation is ongoing and police would like to hear from anyone who might have witnessed what led up to the attack. new this morning, san jose police are investigating a fatal shooting. police were called to west san carlos street around 7:30 last night. that's where they found a man who had been shot at least once. he was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. police have no suspects in custody, but the investigation is just getting started. this is san jose's 41st homicide of 2013. last year the city have 46, the highest number in 20 years. san rafael police need help identifying a bank robbery suspect. take a look. this video clearly shows a man police say robbed a citibank branch yesterday morning around 11:00. he that some type of handgun or modified weapon during the robbery. if you recognize him, do not approach him. he is considered armed and dangerous. just call 911 or the police. tips can be turned in anonnously and they could earn you cash rewards. batkid has saved the city, captivated our hearts. yesterday the city of san francisco was transformed into gotham city to make five-year-old's miles scott's wishes of becoming a superhero come true. we recap the amazing day. >> reporter: as batkid emerged in a lamborghini bat mobile, it was the beginning of a day-long adventure. one much of the city cheered on and is still cheering. >> in san francisco we don't really have a lot of kidsism think there are a lot of us thinking, yes, we get to do something fun for a kid. >> batkid, also known at five-year-old miles scot, helped disarm a mysterious device. >> that's it! you got it! >> and free a damsel in distress who was tied to the tracks of the cable car line. and foil the riddler's plan for a major heist. >> who is there! >> the greene-suited villain was led off to the clink, and the batkid was met with growing applause from the crowd. but the action wasn't over because the penguin took san francisco giant's mascot lou seal hostage. he had to set him free and take another villain. but wait, there's more! >> i want to thank the batkid for saving our city! >> mayor ed lee handed him a key to the city and cheering crowd at the civic center got their final word from the boy hero. miles is a cancer survivor and when his leukemia went into remission he asked for this wish. the bay area chapter of the make-a-wish foundation got to work. the san francisco police chief greg suhr became one of the leading characters." he helped entertain the batkid and helped put the day together. >> he's our hero. i mean, i don't know. it's great. >> san francisco loves batkid, indeed. abc7 news. >> the department of justice even got into the act, sending out this news release about the indictment of the riddler and the penguin. it reads, if not for the heroic action of one miles, aka batkid, they surely would have been successful. >> way to go, miles, way to save gotham. #*! >> president obama even got involved in a video posted on "the vine." he then tweeted this photo of miles running down hyde street. he encouraged people to follow him at #sfbatkid. that hashtag, by the way, so popular, at one point we measured more than 20 tweets per second. and #sfbatkid was trending all over the try. police chief greg souray's son designed these batkid t-shirts. they originally expected to sell 300 and they sold 3,000. they are sold out now but there will be more. we have a link on our music conference and the pain from shingles just made it impossible to even want to move. i couldn't play my bassoon because of the pressure that i felt throughout my whole head. eventually i noticed that i had these little blisters up on my forehead and they started spreading. the blistering and the rash was moving down towards my eye. the doctors at the emergency room recommended that i have it checked out by an eye doctor. there was concern about my eyesight. i eventually learned that if i had chickenpox i was susceptible to getting shingles as an adult. i couldn't do the things i loved bus said he's not homophobic and said the crime should not be considered a hate crime. 18-year-old luke suffered first and second -- second and third-degree burns in the attack. sasha, who was born a male, was wearing a skirt when a 16-year-old student from oakland set him on fire. according it our media partner the contra costa times, the teen's lawyer calls it an ill-considered prank that went seriously wrong. the judge granted a hearing for the defense challenge for prosecuting the suspect as an adult. a man wanted for a horrific attack on a homeless woman in san francisco last week has been arrested. 28-year-old timothy chase was taken into custody yesterday at his home in oakland. police say chase is the man this surveillance video. you see him walk up to a person sleeping on the sidewalk and stomp that person's head repeatedly. they found chase after getting tips from people who recognized him in the video. the victim refused medical treatment. captured on video, police made several arrests in san francisco after they say a crowd turned hostile yesterday. police say a man ran from him through his home through the apartment after they tried to give him a bike citation. neighbors and family thought police were too brutal. three people tried to intervene and were also taken into custody. two officers and the suspects were injured. police say they used reasonable force during the arrest. >> a shocking discovery at the menlo park post office. it's a story you will only see on abc7 news. social security numbers and other personal information on a pad of scratch paper. a customer made the discovery at the post office. >> i first thought this promotes identity theft. i mean, it's right there for anybody to pick up. >> the supervisor said he doesn't know how it happened, but says there will be an investigation. >> emergency efforts are underway around the clock to get water and said to typhoon survivors in the fill fines. survivors are hungry, dehydrated and at risk for disease. official death count stands at 1139 but more than 3600 are estimated to have died. and hundreds are displaced. officials are focusing on getting help to survivors. >> we are done with the rescue and retrieval. now we have to clear the major thoroughfares and make passage more possible. >> after days of delay the pace of the relief operation is picking up with more food, water, medical aid reaching the disaster zone. happening today, there will be a typhoon haiyen fundraiser. it is from 1 could 4 this afternoon. it will take place at the daly city united methodist church on south gate avenue just west of interstate 280. monday there will also be a fundraiser. you en can make donations to the relief fund from red cross through a live hotline right here on abc7. starting this early january, parking at the larkspur ferry terminal will know longer be free. the board of directors approved a two dollars fee yesterday. fee will not be collected on weekends or major holidays. although you can get a monthly pass for $20. get ready for fresh crab. take a look at the first dungeonness crab of the season. rough seas kept most boats docked and high winds are expected to keep many of them that way until tonight. fishermen are expected to get three dollars a pound for their catch, and that means you will pay around $5.50 to six dollars a pound. this is the first year of a new state law that limits the number of traps trappers can carry on their fishing boats. they are glad to be back out there and working but the weather is not especially cooperating just you. here's a look at our sfo camera where in san francisco it's quite mild. temperatures in the upper 40s. oakland is at 52. the mild spot. los gatos dropping to 40. half moon bay, 5-mile visibility. fog not much of an issue. and the exploratorium camera showing that we are looking pretty quiet this saturday morning. but the cool numbers for sure up in the north bay with mid-30s santa rosa. napa, 39 in novato. low 40s for livermore. upper 40s in concord so we are looking at that chilly start to the day. the afternoon is cooler than we are used to. it is the middle of november. we've been waiting for the big dome of high pressure to finally give way and there are sign necessary the week ahead we could see some changes. chilly this morning with a few clouds. sun and clouds for not only today but tomorrow, as well. and that chance of rain first coming into play in the north bay on tuesday. then it looks like wednesday and thursday the rest of the bay. in fact, the rest of the state could see a chance of showers. maybe some high-elevation snow as well. sod to this is the setup for the partly cloudy and cooler conditions with the energy or the moisture staying well to the north of us. but if you are up in cloverdale, santa rosa, points north, you may notice a few clouds around. this morning the clouds are from san francisco on south. and the look ahead throughout the middle of the week, here comes that better chance of rain come wednesday and thursday. right now it's still about five days out. so hard to pinpoint the confidence level of this and if we do see the rain how much. but at least we are showing signs of perhaps a zonal flow from the ridge beginning to weaken. that could open the storm door. 63 for san jose. look for 64 los gatos. comfortable temperatures by the afternoon, about 3:00. 62 san mateo. notice the low clouds and fog in satisfy moon bay. onshore flow keeping the numbers cooperate breezy here from the sunset district. san francisco 61 today. newspaper north bay a few clouds electric time to time but low 60s should do it for you. around cloverdale and 64 in sonoma. low 60s for oakland. 46 astro valley. you head inland temperatures will be in the low to mid-60s. walnut creek one of the warmer location at 65. 64 in the livermore valley. the accuweather seven-day forecast then, a few more clouds tomorrow. 50s and 60s. more sunshine on monday. here comes our chance of rain mainly north on tuesday. wednesday more general chance. could linger into thursday. we will have to wait and see. getting kind of far out. and temperatures climb to yield 150,000 pounds of fruit. the homeowner's husband planted them before he died in 2006 and she doesn't want to see the fruit go to waste again. a nonprofit that harvests backyard fruit and about six degrees of cooling. the rest of the day we will look for partly cloudy skies, breezy and cooler for most with temperatures on the coast upper 50s to the low 60s. around the bay it should be in the low 60s. and inland temperatures in and around the 64, 65-degree mark with perhaps an outside number of 66. so we are talking about the more typical temperatures, when are we going to see some is a live picture. the view from westbound highway 24 in orinda. you see handful of cars going through there. not heavy traffic but they are among the first cars to use the new bore. it opened shortly the first cars were escorted through with a police escort. last night workers reconfigured the number 2 bore to be permanently dedicated to eastbound traffic. reverse commuters will see the biggest benefit during peak hours with an average of five minutes cut from their commute. >> from oakland side to the orinda side in the morning will experience for the first time two bores open for them, which should hopefully keep the opposite direction moving faster. >> caltran said the most dramatic change will be for people heading into san francisco on weekends. there used to be just one tunnel open, but now there are two. president obama says improved energy efficiency and higher energy production in the u.s. are helping the environment and the economy at the same time. in his weekly address the president draws attention to increased u.s. oil extraction. last month it exceeded oil imports for the first time in nearly two decades. it's a topic the president discussed on thursday while dooring a steel plant in cleveland. >> that's a big deal. that's a tremendous step toward american energy independence. business is important too. we reached this milestone in part not only in this case. >> the president offered his own fix on thursday. it would allow insurers to extent health plans for existing customers until october, 2014. that's an extra year to adapt to new rules. yesterday he met with insurance executives to build support for his proposed fix. >> programmers based in san francisco has created an online tool to help consumers deal with the troubled website. their website is called shurpa health. the creators got an idea they tried to sign up for an insurance plan on healthcare.gov. it took about two days and a couple hundred dollars to build. one of the creators spoke with abc7 news via skype. >> we thought when we first started we could create a much more usable experience than what healthcare.gov was offering in terms of finding the plans themselves. >> to be clear, you can't use it to sign up for a health plan, just to search for one. when you are on the site you will enter your zip code and income level. lyanne melendez has the details. >> the median high school grade point average for incoming freshmen at cal is 4.19 on a 4.0 scale. that's because so many take extra credit courses just to try to get in. but not every student, including some athletes, arrive here with those high marks. >> i believe they should be held to the same standards as students at berkeley because the whole school is a school of excellence. >> and that's coming electric a freshman football player at cal. even though he was accepted with a 3.6 gpa. but the university says it looks at other factors other than academics when selecting students and never picks someone who is bound to fail. we know they have so much else to bring to the campus community and we know they have skills and abilities that might not be captured by grades and sat scores. >> i'm not strong in sciences and i don't focus on taking science classes. you work with your strong points and i guess for them it would be sports. >> except the cal football team hasn't really performed well this year. in the pac-12 conference they are 0 for 7. u.c. president had this to say about the team. >> the cal football team obviously is having some troubles right now. the number one concern i have is not the record, it's the graduation rate. >> the national collegiate athletic association found that between 2003 and 2006 only 44% of football players of cal graduated. the most recent numbers are not out yet. >> they are leaving early. we have work to do on that front and we know. the athletic director already said she will be assembling a task force. we want to look at it in its entirety in a comprehensive nature. >> they want it closer to the overall number, which is 90%. abc7 news. >> 6:47. thanksgiving is so late this half moon bay. not much in the way of fog but mid-level clouds and the exploratorium camera showing a beautiful start to the day. in san francisco, santa rosa and napa and novato in the 30s. it is much cooler here. the skies cleared earlier through the overnight hours in the north bay. that's why temperatures have dropped and, of course, the valleys here allowing for the cooler air to drain into the valleys. 46 in fairfield. concord good more than, 48 for you and 43 in livermore. from our sutro tower it is a quiet start to the day. although you may notice the breeze in the higher elevations and at the coast today we are looking at winds kicking up to over 20 miles an hour. so a chilly morning translating into a partly cloudy afternoon for the day today. and we will look for a chance of rain as early as tuesday in the north bay. in fact, the north coast right now looking at shower activity from crescent city and the weak weather system that not only will bring a few clouds around today, but also enhancing the on shore flow around the bay area. so if you are headed way up to the north, just a few sprinkles. not even managing much up by mendocino. but as we go through the rest of the weekend, the cloud cover will be with us throughout the afternoon and tomorrow. that will give us a partly cloudy day and temperatures once again in the 50s and 60s. so a couple of neighborhoods shy of average today. we should see about 67 in san jose. mid-60s today. plenty of sun and dry in suggesten california with about 75 in palm springs. a few showers up towards eureka with 51 in the northern sierra. 54 in the southern sierra. temperatures today, a little cool. san francisco should afternoon about 63. going for a high of 61 today. it will be breezy, 62 san mateo. up in the north bay some of the warmer numbers with 65 napa. also up by the delta talking 65 antioch, 64 in the livermore valley and the accuweather seven-day forecast shows that tomorrow, with the partly cloudy sky once again, 50s coast, 60 around the bay. a little bit more sun on monday and maybe showers on tuesday. everyone on wednesday and clear out thursday. and sunnier and warmer into next pull away. the freshman from way out and he hits. he had 24 points. that broke a 59-59 tie. bears go on to win 64-60. >> bad news for a raiders team trying to snap a two-game losing streak. quarterback terrelle pryor may not be able to play sunday in houston for the raiders. he suffered a setback on friday on his sprained right knee. that means backup matt mccloin could start against the texans. he's an undrafted rookie who started training camp as number four on the depth chart. he's last man standing now. last played a couple weeks in the fourth quarter against philadelphia throwing for 87 yards. a huge game in college football tonight on abc7. fourth-ranked stanford at usc. a cardinal win likely keeps them on track for a possible bid to the rose bowl. we'll have it here at 5:00
