Hail to the chief by the band. Moments later mr. Trump spoke to the first time as president of the united states. What truly matters is not which Party Controls our government but whether our government is controlled by the people. January 20th, 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again. Reporter it was a fiery speech that sounded as much a Campaign Speech as an inaugural address. A 16minute long address to the nation, President Trump returned to familiar themes from his campaign, promising to be a man of the people. He said there was no room for prejudice, quoted a bible verse about unity and welcomed debate with the pursuit of solidarity. He also talked about bringing back jobs, securing borders, and his familiar tag line of making America Great again. President obama became former president obama today, of course, after President Trump was sworn in. He and former First Lady Michelle Obama took a helicopter to joint base andrews in maryland where they got on a plane to palm springs for a vacation. The president gave some brief remarks thanking his supporters and telling them they proved the power of hope. The obamas are expected to land in palm springs any minute now, but they were diverted to riverside because of bad weather in california. While President Trumps inaugural address is being described by some as unusually combative, he struck a more conciliatory note moments later at his luncheon, thanking bill and Hillary Clinton for attending the inauguration ceremony. I was very honored, very, very honored when i heard that president bill clinton and secretary Hillary Clinton was coming today, and i think its appropriate to say and id like you to stand up. And honestly, theres nothing more i can say because i have a lot of respect for those two people. It was quite remarkable, actually, to see his former political adversary there on the dais as he was sworn into office. Earlier today mrs. Clinton tweeted that she attended todays inauguration to honor our democracy and its enduring values, saying that she will never stop believing in our country and its future. Of course a number of representatives, including many from the bay area, chose not to attend today. Later in the day, the inaugural parade. At one point President Trump, the first lady and other members of the family as is custom in recent inaugurations stepped out of the limousine and walked briefly down pennsylvania avenue waving to the crowd. More than 200 people were arrested during the inauguration protests at the Nations Capital today. It was not all celebration, as you well know. One limousine was set on fire and the windows of some other cars were smashed. At one point a few protesters used sticks to vandalize a starbucks store and a bank as well. A pile of overturned newspaper boxes and trash cans were also set on fire in the streets. Police responded by using flash bang grenades and pepper spray, attempting to chase down some of the vandals. And again, about 200 were arrested. Washington Police Say Six officers suffered injury, but only minor injuries. Now, this is video just in showing President Trump in the oval office signing an executive order telling federal agencies to ease the burden of the Affordable Care act. Of course this comes just after the Republicanled Congress passed a bill to repeal president obamas health care law. Happening right now, it is a night of celebration. Three major balls are taking place tonight, three official events tonight for the president and the Vice President and their wives as well. Lets show you a live look now at the liberty ball. This event and the freedom ball are both open to the public. Tickets are 50 a person. They will be attended by huge numbers of people. Theres also the salute to our Armed Services ball. People who came out dressed in their warm clothing today put on their finery tonight to attending these balls. It has been a day of pomp and circumstance, celebration and protests. Not just here in washington, but around the country. But here we are, a new era begins. And i spent the day talking to a lot of people from the bay area who came out to hear what the president had to say. They wanted to fly throw,000 miles to be here in person. All right, dan, thanks so much. Well see you later. In the meantime President Trumps opponents raised their voices and aired their frustrations here in the bay area. Protesters marched through oakland. Cornell bernard has followed todays protests and he joins us live now with more. Cornell . Reporter kristen, eric, lots of rain here tonight. The tables are set, the room is ready for an inauguration ball at santa rosas iconic flamingo hotel. It would not be the only celebration in the north bay today. There are a lot more of us than you can imagine. Reporter but not in liberal marin county, where President Donald Trump received a bit more than 15 of the popular vote. 15 would be a few more people than the ones who gathered to watch this mornings inauguration at the trek winery. They did not invite us inside for fear of repercussions by their neighbors. We dont want people to hate us. We dont want people to excommunicate us or decide not to talk with us anymore. And there is a lot of that thats gone on with our friends and our colleagues. Theyre just like, oh, my god, you support trump . What a jerk you are. Reporter meantime we spent a morning on the outside looking in and then watching visuals of protesting elsewhere. Its freedom of speech. I have the right just as much as they do to speak my mind and if they want to speak their mind, fine, but dont destroy other peoples property. And those opposed to President Trump turned out to protest his inauguration. Melanie woodrow is live in San Francisco with a look at that demonstration. Melanie . Reporter well, this is one of the larger gatherings that weve seen today. You can see hundreds of people have gathered here at u. N. Plaza. Just a couple of moments ago the sky opened up, there was a torrential downpour, but that has not stopped these people from coming out. This is a peaceful protest. We saw other peaceful protests earlier today, including at 4 00 outside of city hall. But earlier this morning, there were some tense moments as protesters ignored Police Orders to disperse. We have some video of that protest. That was at 16th and 7th streets where protesters linked themselves together over the caltrain tracks. Law enforcement officers had to lift those protesters off the tracks after they ignored orders to disperse. While caltrain employees cut the chains that were around those individuals. Those protesters would not move. There were at least two people that i was close enough to see to where i was concerned about arms being broken. Reporter another group of protesters gathered on california street earlier this afternoon as police stood nearby, but said they did not have to take any enforcement actions. Those protesters were in front of a building that they said is partially owned by President Trump. Again, most of the protests that we have seen today in San Francisco have been peaceful. Hes going to be the leader for all of america. He speaks in a very straightforward manner and he speaks to the lives of the people who are his constituency. Things have been really tough for a lot of americans, and a lot of people think that we just have to say, well, its globalization, automation, get over it. People need lives of purpose and meaning and we have to figure out how to make sure that people have work that gives them that purpos purpose. Reporter we heard so many people talking about why they wanted to be here today. I spoke with a great many people from the bay area and ive also been talking with people who came from the bay area to protest Donald Trumps inauguration today. Weve heard some very interesting comments. All in all, been a fascinating day. Eric, kristen, back to you. We heard from a couple of those folks you talked with. How about the others, what was their thoughts about the speech that President Trump gave today . Reporter you know, interesting. Of course there were diehard supporters who thought the speech was terrific and right on point and there were others that thought it was a bit harsh and nontraditional. By and large they agreed with the message, of course, but this was not a typical inauguration speech in a lot of ways. A lot of people picked up on that. But again, youre speaking to the faithful and they were delighted to be here and agreed with what the president had to say. Dan reporting live from washington, d. C. Thank you very much.
