It happened about 11 00 this morning on river road near olivette road in santa rosa. You can see the van shredded as the driver sideswiped a big rig. Officers say the vans driver was not wearing a seat belt. He had major injuries. The driver of the big rig had to be cut free from the wreckage but was not seriously hurt. About 20,000 pounds of dirt and rock spilled from the big rig. It is blocking traffic. A crew is cleaning it up right now. Libby schaaf is now officially oaklands 50th mayor. The former Council Member was welcomed by her constituents as well as protesters outside the Paramount Theater in oakland. Abc 7 News Reporter Lyanne Melendez is live with how the mayor plans to turn things around in a city that has faced serious problems. Reporter well, right off the bat, the mayor has said she wants to tackle the crime rate here in oakland and that she wants to engage the Police Department more. Thats something we havent heard in a long time. Now, she has said she will spend the first day in office at the Police Department from 6 00 in the morning until midnight to make sure that every officer in oakland knows what shes about. She arrived with her family at her inauguration in this car made in oakland by a supporter of the new mayor. I think its a great symbol of oakland, our vitality our creativity, our secret sauce. Reporter if ever oakland needed something or someone to improve its tarnished image, many agree its now and it may be schaaf. A group of protesters showed up outside the inauguration demanding yet again an end to police brutality. We are here to invite her to do the right thing. We are here to ask her which side are you on. You can make your actions speak and match your words. I embrace protest. Protesting is part of oaklands dna but vandalism is not. We have students coming out of our community college, our high school, and have a direct pipeline to jobs for the city of oakland and to our Police Department. I think that changes the whole dynamic. Reporter during her first 30 days, the mayor says she will also focus on a deal to keep the raiders from leaving oakland and of course, the as as well. I will not put the publics money into the deal but there are a lot of other things that we as a city and the county can do to keep our sports teams, develop an incredible coliseum complex out in the coliseum area. Heading to san jose now former san jose mayor chuck reed did not waste any time getting a new job. He is joining hopkins and carley, a Silicon Valley law firm. A news release says he will join the real estate group. Former San Jose City attorney john gallo works for the firm as well. Its been around for nearly half a century. Reed served two terms as san hoe sayss mayor. Jerry brown made history today, starting his fourth term as california governor. Governor brown is the only governor in state history to be elected four teams. He will also be the last unless voters undo term limits now imbedded in californias constitution. Governor brown focus is challenging the state on setting even higher environmental goals. It is exactly the sort of challenge at which california excels. This is exciting. Its bold. Its absolutely necessary if we are to have any chance of stopping potentially catastrophic changes to our climate system. Brown proposed the state increased renewable electricity sources from one third to 50 over the next 15 years. He is also asking california to cut vehicle Petroleum Use by 50 and double the efficiency of existing buildings. Tonight, Richmond Police are asking for help finding a 16yearold girl possibly being held against her will. Belinda jean carson hasnt been seen since leaving her home last thursday, new years day. Investigators have information indicating that this teenager may, may have been with a man who is refusing to allow her to go home. Carson has no history of being a runaway. Anyone with information on carsons whereabouts is asked to call Richmond Police immediately, please. We are learning that the shooting death of a man by San Francisco police was an apparent suicide by cop as they call it. The man had a pellet gun and was shot in the parking lot of the Mission Police station. Abc 7 News Reporter vic lee is live at the hall of justice with what hes learned on this story. Reporter well, abc 7 news has learned that investigators here at the hall have the evidence that leads to the fact that the man committed suicide by cop, also known as blue suicide, because they do have the notes that he wrote saying that he was in a bad place. It is a sad letter, dan. I have read it and it says essentially to police that they are not to blame themselves that they did nothing wrong in shooting him, that he forced them to do that. The 32yearold man died from his wounds at San Francisco general hospital. He was shot multiple times by two Police Sergeants in the parking lot of mission station. It now appears it was blue suicide. The man left behind notes to his father, Close Friends and one addressed to police officers. The notes indicate he had financial troubles and failed relationships. It happened at around 5 20 last night. Police noticed he was hanging around the stations restricted parking lot which is offlimits to the public. Three sergeants exited their patrol car asking him to leave. The police chief explained what happened after that. Went to approach him to tell him again hey you cant be here, and he went to his waistband, where there was the butt of a gun and drew the weapon. Two sergeants fired. The suspect was hit three times. Reporter police discovered later that he was carrying an airsoft gun. Those who live and work around the Police Station were surprised and shocked when they heard what happened last night. Theres so many crazy people in San Francisco that probably need more help than they are getting. I was really shocked to see that in an area like this Something Like that would happen. Reporter the bridge district has not kept records of how many headon collisions there have been here since it opened in 1933 but it does know there have been 16 of them since 1970 with five deaths since 1990. The burglars put a gps device on a car to track its location. When the owner drives off the burglar breaks into the victims house. When you take a look at live doppler 7 hd, you will see those high clouds passing through, no rain on the horizon, at least not immediately.
