The floodwater left several cars stranded at a park and ride lot. At least two cars not been able to move since yesterday. Several people could not drive away from the shoreline slogged through the floodwater in order to get to work. A big repair job is under way to finx that sinkhole in sa francisco. They is say it will be completed by next tuesday. A 100yearold water pipe burst yesterday starting a pavement cavein that grew large enough to swallow several cars. In the mission district, businesses have major flood damage. A result of the aging systems failures. The owners are asking for more city help to prevent flooding in the future. A road in belmont could remain closed until next week because of a collapsed storm drain. That happened yesterday on middle road between el camino royale. Because of the continuing threat of rain, oakland has canceled tomorrows plans for the friday art show and street fair. The next one wont be until february 6th. Dozens of people had to be rescued after a mudslide in riverside county. Mud came down the community of gill man hot springs about 80 miles southeast of los angeles. You can see the cleanup of the mud under way today. But its a huge job. Several people in their cars when the slide hit had to be rescued. There were no serious injuries. Thankfully. Police arrested a woman accused of running over one much their officers this morning. They found the car she was driving. The officer is in the hospital with serious but not lifethreatening injuries. This all started about 7 30 this morning on broad moore boulevard when Police Responded to a report of a car with two people sleeping inside. A 19yearold man from oakland tried to run. But he was arrested the woman took off in the car and police say she almost hit one officer and then ran over the other. The main focus is to protect this criminal investigation and bring two people who tried to kill two Police Officers in san leandro this morning to a fair and just trial so that they can stand up against what they did. Police say one of the officers opened fire in selfdefense. They havent said what other information about the woman behind the wheel. Protests under wheel across the nation after a grand jury decided not to charge a white new York City Police officer in the chokehold death of a black man. Eric garner died after officer pantaleo used an unauthorized takedown move against him. Police say he was resisting arrest. It was caught on video. Hundreds of people are protesting right now in chicago. Heres a live picture of whats happening there. Its being replayed in a number of cities around the country. As im at 14th and broadway, there are about two dozen gathered on the corner by franco dell plaza. The protest could get under way more like 5 30. We did speak with some veteran activists here in the bay area about what these events mean. The message and the goal. Last nights march through the streets of oakland went on for hours. No broken windows or street fires but plenty of conscience and a clear message. Deandre peters, a bay area leader for the stop Mass Incarceration Network organized the peaceful demonstration last night. The larger goal is waking people up to the horror of whats going on. I think the demonstrations over the last couple of weeks have. Weve done a lot of work to make sure folks doing activism online also take it off line. Oaklands shes the cosigner of the black lives Movement Including a hash tag being used all over the country. Black lives matter. Black lives they participated in last fridays shutdown of the b. A. R. T. System at the west oakland station. We know that people are watching from their living room and its not coming into their community. We wanted to make sure that folks really felt like theres something happening that we need to deal with. Jason shake anderson was an outspoken participant three years ago. He most recently ran for mayor of oakland. Though he thinks they have some value anderson is not participated in any of the recent street marches. As far as action go, i want to see actions like boycotts, like the montgomery bus boycotts. I need to see action not going to dont focus on organizations. Function in a way that has a longterm Sustainable Movement thats going to affect the system. Reporter again, were here at 14th and broadway. A small gathering at this place. In fact, maybe a half dozen uniformed officers on motorcycles. Theyre staying quite a bit away. Contra cost a firefighters say a Sprinkler System was essential in helping them it knock down a fire. It was over the house on a road where the fire broke out just before 9 00 a. M. Investigators say the fire was accidental. Crews had a hard time getting into the fire because of narrow streets. Many fast food workers walked off the job to fight for a higher wage. Abc 7 News ReporterLyanne Melendez has the story from the newsroom. Hi, cheryl. 190 cities in the u. S. Had rallies to demand higher wages. The campaign called the fight for 15 is backed by the Service Employees union. Not everyone agrees with them because they say the economy is still very fragile. Workers in oakland demanded higher minimum wages this afternoon and a chance to unionize. At this rally, they asked for 15 an hour. Its only 15. I used to make 13. It wasnt enough. 15 is not too much. San francisco voters already approved a hike. The current minimum wage is 10. 74 an hour. The city will see incremental increases through july 2018 when it reaches 15 an hour. San jose and richmond also voted to increase wages. But at the state level, workers have to wait until 2016 to see it hit 10 an hour. State senator mark leno recently introduced another bill with the hopes of increasing the states minimum wage to 13 an hour by 2017. When consumers, especially lowwage workers have extra money in their pocket because theyre no longer paid a poverty wage, they spend everything just to make ends meet. That means more dollars circulating within our economy. Leno also says increasing their pay would mean extra money in their pocket et cetera to spend on consumer goods therefore fueling the economy. But some employer groups have said raising the minimum wage would cause layoffs in some businesses and they would go under. Betty jo of the California Small Business Association agrees. The economic climate hasnt really come back for small business. So theres apprehension on how they cover any additional costs. Four states recently voted to increase wages. Although the metal barricades have been taken down, police will be on patrol tonight making sure that people stay out of this area. The city says it could take nearly two weeks to clean up the camp. Just off story and center in san jose, this treehouse stands out. I didnt think wed be this long before us. He built it more than two years ago. Still want to see what happens and how theyre going to cut the tree down. Today was eviction day for residents of the jungle. The bay areas most notorious homeless camp. Residents unsure of what their future holds. A lot of us are scared and confused. We dont know where to go. Tracy sanchez tent spent the day searching for her pets. Theres a rooster, a bunch of cats, a dog. Just theyre like well, why didnt you take them . We dont know where were going ourselves. For now, dozens of workers in white suits roamed the grounds. The city expects to spend half a Million Dollars on cleanup. Citing unsanitary conditions, Officials Say shutting down the camp was a matter of public safety. Their attention now shifts to finding these people a place to live. For this project, we decided to put a Housing First approach on t 144 people out of the sight. Weve got 155 to move into housing. Advocates hope others arent lost in the mix. Its our duty to help these people so they can help themselves eventually. We shouldnt give up hope. We shouldnt give up hope at all. The man who no longer has his treehouse or a home. I feel lost because im not going to see these people again, kind of like my neighborhood. So i dont know. Hard to feel right now. In san jose, chris nguyen, abc 7 news. In berkeley, sky 7 hd as overhead as police cleared out a tent city in front of a post office. The group is part of a protest trying to stop the sale to developers. No arrests were made. The American Red Cross faces questions tonight about how it spends the donations it receives. A report by pro publica and National Radio disputes about the percentage of money going to help people. Red cross claimed 91 cents went to serve people. But it was revealed only 74 cents went to help people and 26 of every dollar went to fundraising expenses. This comes as the red cross is trying to increase donations. Consumer reports partnered with us on donating to charity. Michael finney is here. Its the time when people look to give away money. The vast majority of giving happens this time of year. Its more than half. 40 of charitable contributions are made in the last few weeks of the year. How can you determine if a charity is worthy of your hardearned dollars . Consumer reports has important advice. These days your mailbox is probably stuffed with solicitations from charities. But be aware. Consumer reports has found some charities spend very little on the causes they promote. For instance, in the latest irs filings, the Cancer Survivors Fund in texas spent 8 cents of every dollar on its programs. 89 cents went to fundraisinfund another common way to give, buying from companies that donate part of the sales to charity. The company gets a tax deduction, not you. And theres another caution. You really have to be careful with impulse giving. It can be hard to determine how much money goes to the charity. In this line of Charity Ornaments it may seize for instance how much of the money will be donated. Only one. The pink santa says where the money goes and how much. Consumer reports says to do some homework before donating. Two reliable websites that are free, charity navigator. Org and the Better Business bureau give. Org lets you know how much Money Charities give to the services and programs they support. And how much goes for adm administrative costs and fundraising. Some much your Favorite Charities may not be rated on the National Sites because theyre too small or local. That doesnt mean you shouldnt give to them, just research. Check out the charitys website to see its mission and accomplishments and consider volunteering first. Its a great way to ask questions and get to know the charity from the inside. Another way to go is to give to a Nonprofit FundraisingFederation Like united way that checks out the charities it represents allowing them to participate. United way has to take its cut too. A lot of work to be done there. Good information. Despite their recent heavy rain, more than 99 of california remains in 55 of the state is considered in the most extreme of drought. California would need to see a consistent pattern of storms to move out of our threeyear drought. At least were heading in that direction. We have a series of storms coming.
