flu-like symptoms, fever, sometimes limb paralysis and in some cases, can even cause death. the number of cases in california has actually tripled since last month and includes one patient in los angeles who is paralyzed. abc 7 news reporter jonathan bloom joins us with more about the case. >> reporter: the patient here is a resident of san francisco but other than that, folks are releasing very few details because that patient is a child under the age of 18. we do know that that child was admitted to a hospital outside of the city and county of san francisco and officials do say it was important enough they brought us here for a press conference this afternoon. what they did tell us is that that child was admitted to the hospital suffering from respiratory problems and tested positive for the same illness that's been making news over the past few days in other parts of the country. the hospital pictures we are showing you are not from the bay area. this latest case is one of the first here in northern california. the virus is the same that's been discussed as having a possible link to cases of partial paralysis elsewhere but officials here say that was not the case with the child from san francisco. like the vast majority of enterovirus cases, this one was a respiratory infection. in fact, experts say so many of those cases likely go undetected because they are cold and flu symptoms unless they are exacerbated by another problem. >> it usually causes mild symptoms similar to a cold or a flu. it can occasionally cause more severe respiratory illness leading to hospitalization. this is especially true for children who may have a history of asthma. >> reporter: -- wash your hands, don't touch your face or share your eating utensils and of course, stay home when sick. although the vast majority of these cases will get better on their own, just like a cold or flu, officials say that it is important that you go to the hospital if you are experiencing difficulty breathing. otherwise, the case will get better on its own. if you have difficulty breathing, go to the hospital, don't wait. jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. >> good advice. thank you. a girl is homes, many to no avail. san francisco public utilities commission says they see about 100 water main breaks a year but this one, this big, was rare. >> pipe must have broke or something. never seen nothing quite like it in my life in this area, especially. >> this is on the more severe side. many of the pipeline breaks are smaller pipes that release less water that affect fewer people. this is live now from san jose police headquarters with more. vic? >> reporter: well, we are learning tonight that this officer can be a very important witness if the d.a. decides to charge this case. our sources within the police department tell us that this connection to the officer was one of the big reasons why the investigation took so long. now, we were unable to get ahold of this officer in the san jose police department and the d.a.'s office declined to comment. reliable sources tell us the san jose police officer is sergeant sean pritchard and he went to mcdonald's home after the 49ers
