sandy is expected to get a power punch when it collides with two other storms, and that super storm could dump rain or snow over 800 miles from the east coast to the great lakes. good evening, thank you for joining us. i'm ama daetz. we beginning our team coverage of the developing storm with leigh glaser. i understand sandy is expected to come ashore tomorrow? >> leigh: late monday night, throughout the morning hours on tuesday, and looks like atlantic city could be the place where the superstorm makes landfall. let get to live doppler 7hd. you can see -- we're going to put the satellite on there as well. cape hatteras, north carolina, 50 miles-per-hour winds, virginia beach, virginia as well. 45 miles-per-hour, and you can see the rain bands churning and moving inland. the width of the storm, over 500 miles long. right now it is 270 miles southeast of cape hatteras. winds still category 1. moving to the northeast. by late tomorrow afternoon, early tuesday morning, it will jog towards the northeast, and as i mentioned, landfall anywhere from atlantic city to new york and all eyes are on that. we call this a super storm because we're going to have those feeder bands moving in off the ocean towards the west, and then we have another system to the northeast that will twitch the winds back offshore, bringing in the cold air, and of course heavy rains as well as very strong winds. folks visiting the bay area right now, flights are going to be cancelled. it's a me, all eyes on sandy. >> ama: here's a look at sandy's impact. even before the storm makes landfall. the new york stock change will close its trading floor tomorrow but trading will continue electronically, new york's governor has suspended bus, subway, and commuter rail service in new york city. amtrak cancelled most trains for tomorrow, throughout the northeast. and flights, as leigh says, are being cancelled with at many as 5600 flights nationwide expected to at the grounded. coe mass roman is liar at san francisco international with a look at the impact there. >> here at s.f.o., 53 flights have been cancelled throughout the day and passengers aren't blaming the airlines, even though some may not be able to get back to the east coast for days. >> airplanes are still taking off but not necessarily to the east coast. many travelers arriving at s.f.o. in the morning and afternoon were greeted by notices their flights had been cancelled. this family who had a flight to portland maine have had their visit to the bay area extended. >> everybody is cancelled. we can't get out until thursday. >> hurricane sandy is headed to the upper northeast. >> four days here, not the worst in the world,ing in san francisco are instead of going back to portland, maine, where it's going to be a little cooler. >> more than 50 flights have been cancelled at s.f.o. the duty manager says that over the past few days, airlines tried to warn passengers with weekend reservations about potential delays or cancellations. >> through social media, reservations to alert customers if they wanted to rebook for a different date, they would waive the charges involve with that. so that's worked out well. reporter: almost 6,000 flights have been cancelled nationwide due too sandy. most passengers at s.f.o. were taking the delays and cancellations in stride. >> there's nothing you can do about it. it's not the airlines' fault. you can't control the weather. so just go with the flow. everybody is in the same boat. reporter: now, san jose international airport, jetblue cancelled two flights to the east coast and two tomorrow night. as oakland two flights were cancelled, and four headed to boston and jfk tomorrow. so if you're planning to travel to the east coast, checkive your airlines before leaving home. >> ama: thank you. it's an anxious night for those in the storm's path. thomas bradley has the story live from ocean city, maryland. >> while hurricane sandy blows north through the atlantic, millions are holding their breath. >> i'm really nervous about this. i am. i must say. i'm cooking. i'm thinking we're not going to eat for the next sex -- next six days. >> the storm is hundreds of miles offshore, sending sand and suffer reeling. in north carolina it chased people from the outer banks and turn the sea into foam as thick as snow. sandy is expected to slam into the east coast monday evening with devastating force. >> this storm is going to have the worst characterrics of a hurricane and the worst characteristics of a nor'easter. that is, we're going to get a large area ofed inning rain and damaging winds. >> last-minute shoppers are stocking up. >> more than one or two days and want to make sure i have water and food. >> generators are at a premium. >> i need to get a generator in case we lose power for an extended amount of time. >> in new york city, sandy put the brakes on the largest transit system. 'the buses and subways. >> if you don't evacuate you're not just putting your own life in danger but your endangering the first responders who may have to riecks you. >> thousands of flights have been cancelled. standing disappointed travelers until further notice, and experts agree the worst hasn't begun. >> this storm is not overhyped. it's going to be destructive, life-threatening, and historic. reporter: here in ocean city, maryland, conditions have worsened. the rain picked up. the wind gusts are blowing heavily. the streets or evacuated and the concern is widespread flooding. reporting live in ocean city, maryland, abc-7. >> ama: all of this is happening during the final leg of the presidential contest. what impact is sandy having on the campaign? reporter: well, a big impact. president obama and challenger, mitt romney, cancelled events. governor romney was going to head to new hampshire. the president to ohio tomorrow. president obama back in washington, actually touring fema today, making sure that federal preparations are in place and the federal resources are ready to go. but both men will be back on the trail and there's only a week left. >> ama: live from ocean abc7.com. >> in other news this evening, at least 1 people must find a new place to live for the time being after a fire drove them from their homes in san jose. the fire broke out around 7:30 this morning in a condominium complex on creek side drive. the flames moved quickly after the fire started in a building that houses several garages. >> the structure did catch on fire. the fire went from the garage into the attic space of the townhome, and also spread laterally, damaging more apartments. >> we are just banging on the doors and saying, get out! , get out! some of them took awhile to respond because they were sleeping. it was 7:30 in the morning. >> ama: nobody was hurt in the fire but the fire destroyed several cars, as you see there, and damaged the garages. the flames gutted three units and badly damaged two others. investigators say the fire is not suspicious. two people ended up in the hospital after a tree branch fell and landed on them in the golden gate park panhandle today. it happened around 1:00 this afternoon. one of the victims was riding on this mobility scooter when the branch crashed on to a walking path. both victims suffered minor injuries. city officials don't nope what caused the branch to fall. now to our world series watch. let's go straight to detroit where mike shumann is live at comerica park, and, mike, tonight could be the night for the giants. >> mike: that's right, ama. i think hurricane sandy already hit here, it's 30-miles-an-hour winds and 40 degrees, and of course the giants can wrap up their second world series with a victory over the tigers. out the ballpark. players wearing an extra layer of clothing tonight, and of course they're going to need it. the giants are just the first time in line to post-est post back-to-back shutouts since 1966 and only given up four runs in this six-game postseason win streak. matt cain takes the mound. last time he didn't give up a single run. a 1.83 e.r.a. in the postseason so he is the man the giants want on the mound tonight. there's a lot of the line and this giants starter knows it. >> you try to trick yourself and it's another game. but you know what's going on. it's like your mind and body know what's going on. you just focus and try to get the job done. >> i could paint a rosy picture because the picture is not rosy, but i feel our pitching is set up terrific. but you got to win a game. so, i can stay up here and try to paint the best picture, but we got to win a baseball game somehow. >> been doing a great job in the postseason of taking it one game at a time, and we always go out here every day trying to win. no matter what the situation is. whether it's verlander or anybody else pitching the next day. we're trying to win today, and that's just kind of been our attitude the whole postseason. >> mike: giants can wrap it up tonight. if not they face justin verlander in tomorrow's fifth game, but it's supposed to rain tomorrow and completes >> treasure island reside still need to boil their water before they can drink it but they can use their bathrooms again. crews restored the flow of water to treasure island after a water main ruptured friday evening. the water department is testing the water to make sure it's safe to drink. that could happen tomorrow morning. island residents can get clean drinking water from two tanker trucks. they just have to bring their own container. >> someone out there has a lottery ticket worth $15 million. it was purchased in san francisco at the best food grocery store in chinatown. the owners get $65,000 and say they'll use the money to pay off some bills. >> we plan to retire in couple more years, and then i think i hope we will hit one before we leave, you know, and it happened. i'm so glad. >> ama: the winner has not yet come forward. so here's a look at the numbers 5, 14, 36, 38, 47, the mega-number is 18. a space capsule makes a successful landing off the coast of california. up next, the 900-pounds of supplies delivered into space and what the capsule brought back to earth. and let's head out. what a great day in the bay area. but we could have >> ama: mission accomplished. an unmanned space capsule just splashed down in the ocean after completing the first private delivery to the international space station. the capsule carried groceries, medical supplies and clothing as part of a multimillion dollar with contract. the supply ship then ferried frozen samples from scientific experiments conducted inside the station back to earth. time to get a check on the weather with leigh, and detroit looked a little disshelved. >> they could be seeing some cold showers over the ball park. checking in with live doppler 7hd. i want to show you a nice shot from the east bay cam own the -- over the city, and you can see signs of change as the clouds are back, the low clouds, a little patchy fog and that's what we can expect monday. here's a live look at live doppler 7hd. here's detroit, and you can see some of the rain bands from sandy already starting to make inroads there, and it is going to be a chilly night there. taking a little bit closer, some of this may not be reaching the ground yet. you can see the trajectory of it, moving from east to west. so a few cold showers tonight. temperature, 44 degrees. as shu said, it's howling out there winds gusting to 29 miles-per-hour. wind chill factor right now, 36 degrees. it is going to be a cold, cold one at the ballpark there. live doppler 7hd showing you some of the high clouds gathering near the coast, and these will venture inland overnight tonight. temperaturewise, a terrific day today. 79 right now in antioch. 81 in livermore. 77, fremont. 79, san rafael. san francisco, 74. our forecast does indicate that we will go with those coastal clouds and fog overnight. high clouds increase tomorrow afternoon. rain returns. just in time for the trick-or-treaters on halloween night. we'll go with high clouds tomorrow. slightly cooler. the high pressure is starting to weaken a bit. here's the cold front that will bring us the showers. rain clouds by wednesday afternoon, and our animation here, by tuesday, the clouds start to thicken up. this is wednesday, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, and this is 5:00. wednesday afternoon. that's when those first rain bands start to move into the north bay, and it will spread overnight from north to south. we'll probably deal with scatters showers early thursday morning as well ask then after that start to break out into sunshine and dry out. here's the lows tonight. inland locations, in the north bay, a little valley fog. mid-to-upper 40s. elsewhere we'll look for the low clouds to increaser in the coast and the peninsula tonight. overnight temperatures in the mid-to-low 50s. tomorrow, a few high clouds will neck -- sneak in here and temperatures lower a few degrees. 78 for antioch. in the north bay, 67, cloverdale. delightful for san rafael. 62. san jose, 73. and look for 82 for gill russian 75 for santa cruz. here's a look at the seven-day forecast. clouds increase on tuesday. a cooler day. wednesday the rain will begin in the north bay. by wednesday afternoon, and then spread across the entire bay area by wednesday night. a few morning showers on thursday, we dry it out and bring you more sunshine and warm it up next believe but if denver loses to the saints the raiders will be tied for first place in the afc west. arrowhead stadium was once one of the toughest places to play but no more. the chiefs couldn't capitalize. and then brady quinn overthrows the receiver and it's intercepted by matt. he brings its back to around midfield. quinn had to leave later with a head injury. late in the half, the punt, and arenas muffs it. the long snap. the raiders in great field position. third and eight, palmer hits moore in the end zone. 13-6 oakland at the break. third quarter now. palmer, hooks up with darrius agrazing grab but with just 24 second left in regulation, standard connects with titus young for the score. lions win 28-24. detroit improves to 3-4, while seattle falls to 4-4, in the patriots and rams in london. tom brady threw for more than 300 yards and four scores two to lloyd. tight end rob gronkowski had a big game with 146 yards receiving and two touchdowns. the patriots crush st. louis, 45-7. it's being called the duel. tiger woods and rory mcilroy will play an 18-hole match in china. woods will get a $2 million appearance fee. mcilroy gets a million. today tiger was in malaysia for the cimv classic. on 16 he drains the long putt. woods finished tied for fourth, three strokes back. nick watney won the tiedle. this one is 22 under par. on 18, watney taps in for the victory and
