two cars caught on fire in the driveway of a home. firefighters say flames from the car spread to part of the home on phyllis terrace before 2:00 this morning. neighbors saw the fire then heard explosions. crews say exploding tires likely caused the loud noise. the residents were home at the time and they say that no one was hurt. newark police are looking at surveillance video to help with their investigation into the first homicide of the year. it happened in broad daylight yesterday. sergio quintana has the details. >> reporter: family of the victim watched as the alameda county coroner removed the body from the dark colored bmw sedan. they would not talk to us about the loved one, but a neighbor said he may know the victim from a nearby barber shop. >> so you have seen him before. >> i've seen him cutting hair over there. >> where does he cut hair? >> over here. >> robert sanchez and his mother laura are shocked this happened in broad daylight. the victim was spotted at about noon, shot in the head. detectives ruled out suicide because they did not find a gun in the car. >> the first officer arrived and checked on the person and thought they were drunk and then realized that the victim had been shot. >> there are businesses with security cameras aimed at the scene of the shooting. according to our partner channel 14, police have collected images of a white or silver that pulled up next to the bmw and potential suspects. jimmy lee works nearby. his friend is the one who first spotted the victim slumped on the steering wheel of the bmw. >> it was morning and the wipers were on and the headlights were on and that is it. >> detectives are hoping to find witnesses that might help them cash the shooter. in newark, abc 7 news. the chp is investigating a dry by shooting in antioch around 3:00 near the lone tree off-ramp. it was shut down for five hours while investigators searched the freeway and no one was hurt and no other details has been released. the president is responding about the missile last week. thursday's attack by the u.s. destroyed up to 20 syrian aircraft but left the runway in tact. military experts say that dozens of tomahawk missiles don't have the fair power to take out runways president said you don't hit runways because they are easy to fix. the chemical weapons attack killed more than 80 people. happening today, a response to the attack on syria. one san francisco group is organizing a peace walk. code pink will walk across the golden gate bridge in solidarity of the people of syria. the march starts at noon at the golden gate bridge plaza. the crisis in syria was on everyone's minds at an interfaith fundraiser in newark. a harsh critic of the president was the keynote speaker, kazir khan and his wife stayed mostly away from politics and instead called for peace and understanding. abc 7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the story. >> a human development fundraiser and the keynote speaker knows about courage and loss and struggles. >> his son died in iraq during a suicide bombing. the khans spoke at the democratic national convention denouncing then nominee trump for the travel ban. the khans now focus on the goodness of america. >> reporter: in newark, lisa amin gulezian, abc 7 news. and now to a warning for women at stanford after two sexual assaults within 20 minutes of each other on campus. both on escondido road on friday night. one woman was walking and the other jogging. police say the man approached them from behind and groped them. both say their attacker was short and bald. in napa county, dozens of people dropped out because they weren't dressed for the cold weather yesterday morning. just after swimming through the lake they started the cycling portion and pouring rain hit. about 30 people in the series had to be treated for hy hypothermia. >> i would say maybe 25% of the people dropped out just -- just out of pure, this is too cold for an in sane and it took me an hour to stop shivering and i couldn't stop my hands and feet and i came for the southern california weather and it didn't work out too well. >> no it did not. and at a warmer center everyone recovered. another cyclish crashed and was sent to the hospital. it is likely several days before a second barge is removed from beneath the bay bridge and it sank on friday and began spewing oil. they surveyed the damage from the water and from the air yesterday. they want to make sure it won't get worse before they take the next step. >> since the vents are plugged, we're looking closely at the conditions on the water. and then we'll make a determination as to whether we want to pump the product off first or secure everything and then raise the barge. >> the coast guard doesn't know how many oil has spilled until the barge is raised and the fuel in the tank is measured. so far no effects on wildlife. turning to our weather, it is clear and dry and many people are still cleaning up from the past few days of storms. in the east bay, residents are dali dale -- dealing with the aftermath of mudslide and downed trees and wind damage. cornell bernard has the story. >> very scary. very lucky to be alive. >> reporter: dennard shows us after what is left of his house in the oakland hills. >> it just scares me that i could have been sitting right there. >> reporter: where a giant tree came crashing on to his deck and living room overnight. >> that is the bathroom. >> another tree took out the bathroom and laundry room and most of the ceiling. this is what the damage looks like from the back. those giant trees narrowly missed hitting a baby. >> my nephew was laying down with my aunt in the bed where two of the trees fell in between. thank god that they didn't get hit. >> one tree hit two trees and two of the trees hit a house. >> reporter: the city said one tree on a nearby hillside was the first to fall and took out three more in less than a minute. >> you could hear the first tree falling. and the second tree. >> the root ball of this giant youk li eucalyptus is amazing. it is the size of the car. and a mudslide came down on babbing drive during a storm. >> it is 280 in san jose after an accident involving multiple cars. i don't think this is the right video. but let me tell you, this happened near the mclaughlin avenue exit just after 2:30 this morning. one of the cars overturned and one caught on fire and one person has died. it is unclear how many other people were hurt. no word yet what caused this accident or when those lanes will and this is the disease, family tragedy and slave labor wars and terrorism. in the east bay, there is a new chapter in the fight for women's equality in the roman catholic church. we were at st. johns presbyterian. family joined the crowd as a special gesture from the warriors. we were at oracle arena where the team surprised the family with a gift. two sons will be flown to a road playoff game. the family has we have a weak system passing through and then back to sun tomorrow. we cloud up for tuesday. showers return wednesday. here is a look at what to expect today. it is a dry day for everyone and then look at what happens by midnight. a few showers to the north. they sink south and dissipate. so by 7:00 tomorrow morning could see a few light sprinkles from santa rosa, maybe even san francisco. but a dry afternoon. how much rain? we won't call it rain. a few areas of sprinkles. a couple of hundreds, maybe.500 and here is a look at livermore. a high today on 60. the cooler side of average. we should see 66 but more sunshine in the mid and upper 60s and yes, thursday that is when rain arrives and it is cooler and not a big system, it is a weak one. 57 today in san francisco. look for upper 50s in san rafael. so yes, it is certainly cool out there. average highs range from the low 60s to the upper 60s. so we'll be below that. but hey, it is sunny. we'll take the tradeoff. it is 61 in fremont. 63 in san jose. so enjoy it. the look ahead shows on tuesday we cloud up. this is wednesday. and then by late wednesday, 5:00, we've got santa rosa showers, probably from 10:00. they are sinking south into the north bay and then pull out by thursday. we'll have morning showers on thursday but then the rest of the thursday looks dry. so good for rain on wednesday night and thursday morning and salvage the afternoon for dry conditions an even sunny conditions on thursday afternoon. so it is not looking as bad and ominous as we previously thought. but it is not a string of sunny seven-day forecast in a few minutes. developing news out of egypt this morning where 26 people have died and 71 others have been injured after a bomb exploded. it happened at a coptic christian church during a palm sunday celebration. a second attack in alexandria has killed 11 and injured another 35 people. coptic christians have repeatedly been targeted by islamic extremist. the attacks coming weeks before pope francis is scheduled to visit. so far no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. there are reports this morning that syrian war planes are once again taking off from the air base that the u.s. military attacked on thursday with cruise missiles. that is the same base the pentagon said was used to carry out a chemical attack that killed more than 80 syrian civilians. elizabeth hur has the story. >> reporter: back in action. these pictures from russian state controlled television showed syrian jets taking off from shayrat air base, less than 24 hours after nearly 60 u.s. cruise missiles hit the airfield. the wreckage of aircraft destroyed and bombed out fuel tanks and the bunkers show tell tale scorch marks and trump tweeting that the air raid was a success. congratulations to our greet military men and women for representing the united states and the world so well. but while satellite imagery shows damage to shelters, the runways are untouched. the president tweeting, the aren't you don't hit runways is that they are easy and inexpensive to quickly fix. george stephanopoulos asked rex tillerson if this signals a change in u.s. policy toward people. this morning stockholm police announced he was a an asylum seeker whose application was rejected. he stole the beer truck he used as a weapon. police have identified him as a 39-year-old originally from uzbekistan, and since the attack they went back through his social media to find extremist comments. they believe he also had a possible explosive in the truck. >> we have found something in the truck, or in the driver's seat. a technical device that should not be there. i cannot at this stage say this is a bomb or some sort of flammable -- >> the suspect is not talking. swedish police have arrested several other people trying to find answers. police no norway have arrested a man after they found a bomb-like device after they blocked off streets to safely detonate the explosive. no one was hurt. police found it outside of a south bay station on a poplar street. norway security put the nation on high alert because of the attack in sweden. there was a lively debate on immigration at a t-- a town hal outside of sacramento. tom mcclinton took questions for nearly two hours and faces criticism from the audience and one man wanted to know what he would do to help dreamers, those brought to the u.s. illegally as young children. >> punishing a dreamer for a situation that they had no control over is like punishing a child for their parent drunk driving while they were in the car. >> once we have the forms that are necessary to ensure the integrity of the borders, i think we are going to address that issue but in the meantime i cannot advise you to break the law. >> the strike on syria did not come up at that town hall but mcclinton told reporters afterward that president trump, quote, had no right to order the attack without consulting congress. bay area democratic representatives also held town hall in antioch yesterday. for the 27th year, santa clara county has helped residents become u.s. citizens. yesterday abc 7 news was at san jose city college for citizenship day. it included application help, setting up payment programs and free legal assistance. one attendee in the u.s. almost her entire life said she is concerned with the current political climate. >> i'm a little worried. not scared, but worried about all of the changes because i have a family that depends on me and counts on me so this is good for me to change it and become a u.s. citizen because i love the usa. >> santa clara count estimates there are more than 115,000 adults living in the country or living in the county who might be eligible to become citizens. the ntsb is investigating a small plane crash that killed a southern california family on their way to visit colleges in oregon. the crash happened just outside of eugene, oregon on friday morning. the parents, the son and the pilot all died. witnesses described seeing the plane flying at a low altitude when it suddenly turned and went down into a field. investigators plan to be at the site of the crash until the end of the day. happening today, hundreds of at&t technicians and call centerer workers plan to protest calling for a fair contract. today marks one year since employees have been working without a contract. last month workers won an agreement with the company that now no longer requires them to work out side of their expertise and classification. workers will protest because they say they are frustrated by waiting for new contracts. they will be outside of the at&t store on blossom hill road in san jose at noon. still ahead on abc 7 mornings, a bike built for the city.
