So many flood victims are facing obstacles. Many homes are uninhabitable. The city council got an earful yesterday, residents wondering why evacuation orders didnt come earlier. Golden gate bridge officials are planning a trip to washington, d. C. , later this month to see if they can get help for paying for a seismic retrofit on the iconic golden gate bridge. The work will not come cheap. The final phase of the seismic effort could cost up to 500 million. The threestage project began in 1998 and was supposed cost 300 million. The bridge district says costs and security upgrades after the 9 11 attacks have tripled the cost to nearly 9 900 million. It could cost nearly 1 million to fix a marin county hillside that keeps sliding. Thats the estimate by county engineers. It has been closed twice this week because of mudslides, most recently on wednesday morning. The damaged spillway at the oroville dam could go into limited use as soon as next week.
