minutes. cheerleading is now considered a sport in california. it's a step forward, but possibly a leap back for one east bay school district. teammates and their parents are rallying to save their program at the liberty union high school district. that covers brentwood and oakley in contra costa county. abc7 news reporter katie utehs explains. >> reporter: cheerleading is now a sport. >> it's incredibly exciting. we feel proud that now we're being recognized as athletes. >> reporter: but the new state designation actually threatens the traditional cheer program in the liberty union high school district. >> the girls are athletes so for that to be possibly taken away from us, we were devastated. >> reporter: as districts grapple with the costs of implementing cheer as a sport, luhsd superintendent proposed cutting traditional cheer and implementing stunt cheer. it alarmed school board member ray valverde. >> you don't cut something else that has been successful in that district for years. >> reporter: traditional sideline cheer is more inclusive because more students can participate. stunt teams are smaller. >> stunt teams are very small. they allow up to 30 girls but usually they're not that big at all so less girls would be able to be on the team. >> reporter: more colleges recognize traditional cheer for scholarships. this cell phone video shows heritage high taking 10th place at the national competition in florida. their coach says stunt cheer just isn't as established. >> it's not on the same level, so we don't feel like it's an appropriate replacement. >> reporter: the issue goes before the school board at next week's meeting. the superintendent did not return requests for comment. in the east bay, katie utehs, abc7 news. smoke inhalation caused the deaths of all 36 victims in the ghost ship fire in oakland. the alameda county medical examiner says burns or other injuries did not play a role. the victims were unable to get out of the burning warehouse. there was a party in several illegal living spaces inside. investigators have still not announced what the cause -- what caused the december 2 fire or any potential criminal charges as well. two santa clara county correctional deputies are on administrative leave this morning after being arrested last month for separate incidents. the sheriff's office said lionel groba hit an inmate in the face. it happened last august but his arrest came february 17 "the mercury news" reports sergeant robert little secretly recorded his supervisors last year in an attempt to get some leverage on them. the arrests come as the sheriff is working on reforms because of numerous allegations of jail misconduct, including the beating death of an inmate. reuters reports the department of homeland security is considering a move to separate mothers and children who cross the border into the u.s. illegally. it's that kind of idea that instills fear in the households of many immigrant families but now in san francisco, there's help coming with a new hotline and legal assistance. abc7 news reporter lonni rivera has that story. >> reporter: an unexpected visit by i.c.e. agents to a community center in the mission district caused fear and panic in the neighborhood in january. community activist maricela says calls have come through a new hotline about similar situations. >> we've received over 450 calls since february 10 and it is really the community being afraid. >> reporter: the san francisco immigrant legal and education network set up the hotline for residents to report i.c.e. actions and to inform undocumented immigrants about their legal rights. >> we don't recommend you say anything if you are arrested. just say your name and ask for an attorney. >> reporter: the mexican consulate in san francisco launched a legal assistance center. the san francisco office has joined 50 mexican consulates to calm fears and offer legal advice to mexican nationals. >> we want them to know their rights and we want them to have information from reliable sources. >> reporter: consulate workers are visiting communities. many attorneys are working pro bono. it's their way of staying ahead of the trump administration's promise to stiffen immigration enforcement. in san francisco, lonni rivera, abc7 news. violent robbery attempt in san francisco was caught on surveillance video. take a look at this. watch as a man with a gun and a hammer knocked over a woman who works at this jewelry store on grand avenue. happened last month but police shared this surveillance video with us yesterday. they say the man waved his gun around, ordered employees to the ground and smashed display cases. he didn't take anything. here's what it -- he looks like without his mask. no one was hurt in that incident. special needs child was left on a school bus for three hours. the 4-year-old student boarded the bus at the nova education center at 3:30 on monday. the driver parked near his own home with what he thought was an empty bus after he received a phone call from the dispatcher, the driver found the child sleeping underneath a seat. police will not pursue any charges. city of san jose has just announced the hiring of a new director of emergency services. ray riordan has 25 years experience in the bay area. a city spokesman tells abc7 news his hire just after last week's flooding is purely coincidental. the city's last emergency services director left his post last november and there have been -- there's been a national search underway. assistant city manager dave sykes served for the city during the flooding. happening today, san jose mayor sam liccardo will be back out in neighborhoods affected by last week's flooding to help clean up. today he will join volunteers in kelly park on center road. members from orchard supply hardware will help repair damaged areas with $30,000 worth of donated items and materials. the clean-up is from 9:00 this morning until 2:00 this afternoon. a recent rains have caused a scary situation in a south bay neighborhood. a gas leak forced people to leave their homes near suncrest avenue just north of alum rock park. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo tells us it took pg&e crews 10 hours to finish the repair work. >> reporter: it was well after dark when pg&e crews finished repairing a gas leak in san jose. diane was home when the leak happened. it was around is 1 1:00 a.m. her landscaper started frantically ringing her doorbell. >> he saw some -- the earth come up, like it was blowing. like kind of like a volcano would erupt. >> reporter: diane called 911. >> i saw the burst from the gas and there was a very strong gas smell. >> reporter: the fire department evacuated some homes and had other residents shelter in place while pg&e shut off the gas. despite several days of sunshine, pg&e says the cause of the leak was rain. >> because the soil is still saturated in some locations, you can get incidents like this where underground facilities are compromised and they can result in a gas leak. >> reporter: in this case, a 4-inch steel pipeline came apart where it was welded together. 20 customers were without gas for most of the day and night. diane wasn't especially inconvenienced by that, but she is worried about long-term pipeline safety. >> certainly there's a concern with what happened with san bruno and we live in an area where the earth moves and so that would be my main concern. >> reporter: this neighborhood had a similar gas leak about a year ago. in san jose, katie an overflow crowd packed concord pavilleian yesterday to say good-bye to deputy mike foley. he was killed a week ago wednesday when he was hit by a prison bus on a dark, rainy morning. deputy foley was remembered for his love of the outdoors and his dedication to his job and his family. >> i don't think my dad ever realized how many lives he touched. and how many people he -- and how many people he helped feel safe. >> in addition to his son michael, deputy foley leaves behind his wife tammy and his daughter tonya. he was 60 years old. happening today, a march is scheduled in berkeley in support of president trump. the march for president trump rally is planned at martin luther king jr. civic center park at 2:00 p.m. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom has a preview. >> regardless of where you're living or your political affiliation, if you want to defend your liberty and rights, march with us on berkeley. >> reporter: a video announced the protest organized by this man. >> my name is rich black. >> reporter: he's listed as the bay area contact on the national website of the march for trump. but he says he didn't plan it that way. >> funny enough, i'm not actually a trump supporter. >> reporter: what he says he does support is free speech, a right he believes was violated when a lecture by milo yiannopoulos was canceled. >> after the milo event and seeing some people i know get attacked and having their rights shut down, i knew something had to happen. >> reporter: the berkeley college republicans brought yiannopoulos to campus but they're not affiliated with this event. >> we're advising members not to go, because it might get dangerous. >> reporter: people who work downtown remember it well. >> they tore down these fences, busted up all the atms. >> reporter: the man we spoke to insists it won't happen this time. >> we've been working closely be berkeley pd for the last three weeks and i think they're going to do a great job tomorrow. >> reporter: except the city spokesman told us police have not received an application for a demonstration and haven't issued any permits. he refused our repeated requests to speak about it on camera. the group "by any means necessary" is planing a counterprotest. >> make sure that berkeley lives up to its promise of being a sanctuary cities. >> reporter: in berkeley, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. groups have also planned a counterprotest to the pro-president trump rally. that demonstration starts at noon at martin luther king jr. civic center park in berkeley. matt back on the golden state warriors team had his court date pushed back until the end of june. his lawyers told the judge yesterday he has reason to believe barnes will be playing in the nba finals. barnes is facing assault charges. police say he was involved in an altercation at a bar in manhattan back in december. his court date is set for june 27. barnes was signed by the warriors on thursday. it's a pretty cool opportunity today for fans of warriors super star steph curry, the reigning nba mvp. under armour will dropped 30 signed pairs of his new limited gold high tops at the foot locker store in haent. curry is under armour's top client. he is under contract with the company through 2024 for an estimated $4 million a year. the deal also includes an equity stake in that company. not bad. warriors will take on the knicks tomorrow in new york. you can watch all the action right here on abc7. coverage starts at noon. part of the east sidewalk on the golden gate bridge will be closed this weekend from 5:00 until 10:00 in the morning today and tomorrow. you can walk on to the sidewalk from either end of the bridge but only go about halfway across. the closure will allow crews to replace lights on the roadway. the west side walk will remain open for bicycles only. the work will be rescheduled if it rains. a storm of biblical proportions is looming in california's future. the last 200-year storm hit for 43 days between 1861 and 1862, creating a huge lake where the central valley had been. state emergency experts are working on a long-term flood catastrophe plan. they got some practice recently with last month's flood threat at the oroville dam, which forced thousands of people to evacuate. a long-term plan would help californians deal with widespread evacuations and other needs in the event of a mega storm. experts say the state has a system in place that can be applied to all disasters, including a major earthquake. we really look at it as what do we need to be able to do and sometimes that doesn't have to be looked at differently for different scenarios. for example, being able to take care of or help communities take care of a lot of people in a shelter environment or what we call mass care. we may have to do that for an earthquake. we may have to do that for a flood. >> an earthquake catastrophe plan is already in place for the bay area. drivers throughout the state are filing damage claims against caltrans thanks to potholes. the agency is responsible for fixing those potholes. the recent winter storms causing damage on the state highways. last january, caltrans says it fixed 24,000 potholes in the state. this january, there were 35,000 that needed filling. in 2015, caltrans says it paid out nearly $370,000 to fill more than 4,000 damage claims. this year, expected to cost a lot more. good saturday morning to you. another cold weather system headed our way. could bring this local snow levels down to around 2,000 feet. that all happens tomorrow. the storm system still to the north and west of us here and it will continue to slide to the south, pushing through the north bay first and then into the south bay by later on this afternoon. so, as a result, it's a big snow maker in the sierra nevada from 4:00 tomorrow through 4:00 monday. 8 to 14 inches above 3,000 feet. 1 to 2 feet above 4,000 feet and we're looking at about 3 feet over the passes and in fact the wind gusts could be as much as 100 miles an hour so once again, local resorts doing pretty well. 15 inches at tahoe city, 19 inches at southlake so be advised if you're headed to the mountains, good idea to come home on monday. tomorrow will be particularly treacherous. as we look at the morning temperatures, it's 50 in walnut creek, 5 in concord, 53 in oakland, mountain view a balmy 50 degrees so compared to where we've been the last couple mornings it doesn't feel too bad out there. 11 degrees warmer, half moon bay, 8 degrees warmer in oakland and mountain view and san jose feel kind of mild as well. live look from our exploratorium camera. cold storm arrives this weekend. looking at snow around mt. hamilton, mt. diablo, highway 29, and this all happens behind the system that's going to push through the bay area today. thunderstorms are also possible so we don't have a whole lot of moisture associated with this cold system but throughout the day today, the showers will increase and we'll see highs milder today, upper 50s to low 60s ahead of the system and then behind it, it's colder. we have scattered showers. we'll see less in the way of rainfall, but it's really going to be blustery out there. it's a 1 on our storm impact scale for today and tomorrow, so the cold showers, the gusty winds, lower snow levels and the chance of not only a thunderstorm but perhaps some hail. so as we go through our computer an nation hour-by-hour, you'll notice about 9:00 this morning, could see a few spotty showers from san francisco over to the east bay but for the most part, the snow level's already beginning to lower around mendocino county, lake county, and this is about 5:00, here's the weak line, the cold front that's pushing through the bay area. 9:00 tonight, it's in the south bay and behind it, overnight hours, we have some light showers into tomorrow morning. there you go with the cold snow around mt. hamilton and looking at the rest of sunday, showers will be more widely scattered so we're adding up today, tomorrow, and monday for a half inch in the city, maybe quarter inch in mountain view and ben loamen around 1/2 inch. so overnight lows >> that's right, cornell. good morning to you. it's a weak system and we will be looking at the rain moving in later this afternoon. it's 50 in dublin as well as walnut creek and with the cloudy skies, numbers are milder. you can see that with low 40s, the coolest number in santa rosa but that is still anywhere from 2 to 11 degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. so if you're headed out early for a run or to walk the dog, you may see an isolated shower, scattered but mainly in the north bay but noontime so heading out, 40s and 50s, scattered showers, but the rain arrives late in the afternoon for most of you and we're going to time out where it's going to fall heaviest, how much you can expect and talk about the low snow levels that will occur tomorrow. an acknowledgment from the california department of health stating concerns about exposure to cell phone radiation. this is a story that affects almost everybody because 95% of americans own cell phones. a newly released draft report includes scientific studies regarding long-term exposure as well as recommendations. abc7 news reporter leanne has the story. >> reporter: holding a cell phone next to your head or body seems to be a way of life. >> usually i have the phone in my pocket or something like that and i'll pick it up and hold it like that. >> reporter: but people have long suspected that all that radiation may cause damage to cells and tissues. >> we have evidence of brain tumors and other head and neck tumors. we also have evidence of sperm damage in males, infertility in females. >> reporter: joel is with uc berkeley's school of public health. he took the california department of health to court to force the release of this document, which says scientific studies suggest long-term cell phone use may increase the risk of brain cancer and other health problems. he says there's been a lot of pressure from the wireless industry to keep any kind of negative report on cell phones hidden from the public. >> the wireless industry had a vested interest in create -- manufacturing confusion and they've done a very good job at it. >> reporter: the report also suggests keeping phones away from your body, use headsets, speakerphone, and text more. as we discovered, few people followed those recommendations. >> right next to my head, next to my ear, like that. >> reporter: are you concerned at all? >> not typically. >> reporter: most people say they would consider adopting those recommendations. >> if there's a concerted message from sources that are trusted. >> reporter: but part of the reason why the state refused to release the document was because the centers for disease control and prevention insist more research is needed before we know if using cell phones causes health effects. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc7 news. vice president pence is down playing his use of a private e-mail account to conduct state business during his tenure as governor of indiana. a report by "the indianapolis star" says pence contacted advisors on terrorism and homeland security via an aol account which was hacked last summer. pence was a vocal critic of hillary clinton's use of a private e-mail server while she led the state department. he says there's no comparison between his situation and clinton's. >> i'm very confident that our e-mail practices were in full compliance with all of indiana's laws and in my service as vice president will continue that practice. >> however, as with clinton's case, there are now concerns pence didn't rigorously comply with government archiving and open records guidelines. new this morning, just days after his first speech to joint session of congress, president trump visited what will be the nation's newest aircraft carrier, the uss gerald ford. in his weekly address, the president talked about the importance of giving the military the resources and training they need to get the job done. >> my budget will give america's armed forces the resources they need to achieve full and total military preparedness to meet any and all global challenges and meet them, we will. investing in the military means investing in peace. >> president trump also says his vision for the country will include eliminating the defense sequester which creates caps for military and non-military spending. arnold schwarzenegger is terminateding his role as host of the celebrity apprentice. the former california governor blamed president trump for low ratings. schwarzenegger says people were boycotting the show because trump was still a producer. "celebrity apprentice" premiered in january to a 27 drop in ratings. that prompted president trump to call it a ratings disaster and even said he would pray for arnold and better ratings. a tech marketing firm in seattle hopes to expand diversity in the tech industry by setting a hub just for female students. tune is offering free housing, food, laptops, and mentoring to six women who are pursuing computer science undergraduate degrees. they live in a home near the university of washington. the company's founders say just one quarter of all computing jobs are held by women and that needs to change. they hope the home will be a safe space for the students to collaborate. the program is set up to grow each year, allowing more young women to pursue tech careers. we have a link on our website if you or someone you know wants to apply. that's abc7news.com. the deadline is april 1. well, work is progressing to repair the damaged oroville dam spillway but a butte county man wants the crews to stop work. he believes the erosion presents a golden opportunity. jerry has the story. >> look at all this beautiful exposed brand-new bedrock. >> reporter: you're listening to a grown man salivate. >> there are nuggets embedded in that bedrock. >> reporter: bob van camp has been prospecting for gold for 20 years. he's certain that the erosion caused by the damaged oroville dam spillway is creating a golden opportunity. when you look at what's happened with the oroville spillway, what do you see? >> i see a lot of gold potential there. >> reporter: but how much? >> how much gold? pounds. pounds and pounds. >> reporter: van camp knows his trade. he goes out at least once per week and usually finds what he's looking for. >> about an ounce and a half. >> reporter: so about $1,500 at least. >> oh yeah. >> reporter: for serious gold prospectors like digger bob here, secrecy is of the utmost importance. before i came on this trip, i promised that i would not say where it was he was searching for gold. prospectors don't want other prospectors to know what they've already found out. namely, a good spot to mine like on this day and this location. you got it. not long ago, an undisclosed prospector, not digger bob, found this 75-ouncer at an undisclosed location. it sold for $350,000. more recently, this 14-ounce piece was found. is there anything like that down here? no telling, but digger bob would love to find out. >> because gold is so heavy, it always seeks the lowest area. it constantly wants to go down. >> reporter: down where crews are currently cleaning up debris and perhaps a whole lot more. >> all this dirt, all this came off that hillside, and this is full of gold. well, according to reporter jerry t adopt jerry department of water resources officials say they are unaware of any gold being found but they are studying the protocol. new details in the b.a.r.t. train cars. according to the east bay times, b.a.r.t. hopes to run a test car on b.a.r.t. tracks without any passengers as early as this month. once that's done, the cars will have to be tested for another four months of performance monitoring. b.a.r.t. also has cut the number of expected trains down to debut to 35 down from the original 60 planned. the original -- the agency hoped to roll out 230 cars by the end of next year but now that revised number is 166. a new meaning to the california roll to state lawmakers, including one from san francisco introduced a bill to let bicyclists yield at stop signs if it's safe. the lawmakers say this would make the roads safer because the longer it takes for a biker to pass through an intersection, there's a greater chance of oncoming cars will hit them. opponents say if the bill is passed, bikers will completely ignore stop signs because it will give them the discretion to determine what is safe. happening today, if you're looking for a job, san jose giants want to hear from you. the team is hosting itsnnual job fair at the municipal stadium in san jose. the first 75 people who walk up are guaranteed an interview. the team is looking for candidates who would make a good fit for marketing, sales, even a mascot. the fair runs from 10:00 this morning to 12:30 at the stadium. still ahead on abc7 mornings, a fixture of the oakland skyline slowly vanishing. check on the demolition of the bold bay bridge. and here's a live look from our roof cam. gorgeous shot, of course, as usual of the bay bridge, rain is making a comeback this weekend. lisa argen's going to be along in a few minutes to tell us all about it. the abc7 storm impact scale. today's storm is level 1. that means light rain, so keep an umbrella handy and drive safely. track today's storm any time on the abc7 news app. download it now. nasa and the trump administration on the idea of accomplishing a settlement on the moon. the amazon ceo who also owns a space company called blue origin making plans to launch a spacecraft that would shuttle goods and eventually humans to and from the moon beginning as early as july of 2020. a huge air lift took place yesterday to help communities left isolated by land slides near big sur. you're planning a trip to yosemite, plan for a longer drive there. the quickest route from the bay area to the national park, highway 120, is closed near crane flat. this facebook post shows the crater that opened up when heavy rain shifted the soil underneath the road. that means drivers will have to take a detour to highway 140 entrance farther south. a proportion of the highway 41 is also closed for emergency road repairs. keep in mind there's a winter storm watch for the sierra from today until tomorrow afternoon. and that's going to make the work a lot sloer, i suppose, right? all morning to you. your weekend certainly not a washout. we're starting with live doppler 7 where no precip now but as we head further to the north, this is what's going to be pushing through the bay area throughout the day today. so, out ahead of it, we have the mild conditions and a pretty dry saturday for some of you. the north bay, the rain's going to start sooner. in the mountains, we have a winter storm warning going into effect 4:00 tomorrow right on through monday and that's 8 to 14 inches above 3,000 feet. looking at 1 to 2 feet above 4,000 feet and 3 feet over the passes with some very gusty winds so treacherous driving here and the snow amounts well over 1 foot again for our local resorts, looking at 19 inches around southlake and kirkwood so dangerous conditions there but mild numbers to start with numbers from the upper 40s to low 50s here in the east bay. it's 50 in dublin, pleasanton and as we go krocloser to the b low 50s, cooler spots around gilroy so much, much warmer so it's not too hard to take this morning if you have errands to do or if you want to get out for a run or a bike ride, the bulk of the day if you're not in the how shall looks dry but in the north bay, showers could start earlier. looking at afternoon showers and with that, the cold air moves into the bay area tonight and we're looking at highest peaks, snow, and tomorrow, thunderstorm are possible in that cold air, gusty winds tonight also accompanying the front. scattered showers throughout the afternoon, upper 50s to low 60s, a 1 on our storm impact scale not only today, tomorrow into monday, looking at the cold showers, the winds, possible hail and looking at around mt. hamilton, mt. diablo, even up towards mt. st. helena, some low elevation snow. so here we go, 9:00 this morning, but by the afternoon, 3:00 to 5:00, that's when you're going to see more showers. this is the weak frontal band that pushes through the bay area tonight and then by early tomorrow morning, we've got light showers and you can see the low snow levels there so by the early morning hours, you could see accumulating snow around mt. hamilton, couple of showers possible and still showers going into monday. we're going to add up the rain totals and anywhere from about 1/2 inch in oakland, nearly that in hayward, perhaps 1/4 of an inch in san jose. so certainly still feeling like winter tomorrow and then tonight, looking at the possible low snow levels as that front pushes through. so the accuweather 7 day forecast, it's a 1 on or storm impact scale today, tomorrow, and monday with possibility of thunderstorm. you can download our abc7 news app and you will be able to track the rain in your neighborhood but we do have a string of dry, sunny, and warmer days as soon as monday afternoon. temperatures will rebound into the 60s to near 70 by the end of the week. so it's beginning to feel a little bit like a change of the seasons where we don't have days and days of rain. >> yeah, but a reminder that winter is far from over. thanks so much. in the east bay, we may have noticed a piece of the oakland skyline is slowly vanishing. demolition on the old bay bridge span is ahead of schedule. in fact, the work could be fleet kplooet by the end of this year. >> as it kind of just clears away, you have, like, just a grand expanse. >> he's taking a little time to enjoy the view, a view which seems to be changing by the week for drivers on the eastern span of the bay bridge. >> every time i come across, there's a new chunk missing. it's slowly disappearing. >> reporter: the old span is going away. one truss span still visible from the new bridge, but two more span segments out of view set to be demolished and that will happen fast. >> the end of march, early april, we will bring down our last truss band and it is a very sentimental time for us. >> that beautiful bridge is gone almost completely. >> reporter: others are getting a little misty thinking about the old steel bridge constructed back in the 1930s which started coming down in 2013. >> i grew up here so it's something i always remember. but i like the new bridge too. >> reporter: here's time lapse
