Tiffany wilson joins us live from the scene. Hows it looking right now, tiffany . Reporter well, its looking a lot better now than it was just a couple of hours ago. But if you look behind me, see that white suv . Right next to it you can still see water flowing down the hill. This all started around midnight when a 12inch water main burst just up the hill at keith and key. Then it started flooding down keith street into the basements of several homes. It took hours for the San Francisco Utility Commission to shut off the water supply to that pipe. In the meantime, firefighters built a barrier to divert the gushing water into storm drains. Many families tried it making their own water barriers, putting pieces of wood against garage doors and that seemed to help. The Public Utilities Commission Just downgraded the number of homes that were flooded. As we go around and start doing the assessment, that number may change because some homes are still like, people are still sleeping so we cant get access. From our count, looks to be six to seven. Reporter several cars also got caught up in the mess. Now, this car youre looking at was sitting right over the water main break and a sink hole started forming around it. So several hours ago, a tow truck had to come in and haul it away. In the next hour or so, crews are expected to start digging up the pavement to repair the pipe. They expect thatll take between four and six hours. During that time, about three blocks worth of houses are going to be without water. And all of the traffic in this area is going to be shut down. So if you have to travel through this area in the bay view, prepare to find a detour. In San Francisco, Tiffany Wilson, abc 7 news. Tiffany, thank you. Cal tran says work is under way to repair bridges and structures damaged by the august 6. 0 earthquake. Actually, it was not august 6th, but it was a 6. 0. There are six emergency contracts totaling 5. 3 million for repairs on 11 stateowned bridges. Work to fix serious damage got under way shortly after the quake. Crews are now focusing on things like bridge seals, concrete k and pavement damage along state highways 29, 37, and 121. The only bridge that will likely need to be replaced is the garner creek bridge. Both pg e and san bruno are appealing the penalty for its role in the deadly 2010 blast. The penalty proposed by the Utilities Commission includes a fine of nearly 1 million. Pg e wants all the money to go toward pipeline safety. San bruno wants an independent monitor to keep track of the utility safety program. Three members of the puc itself are also calling for review of the penalty. Santa cruz police have arrested a man suspected of running down a bicyclist while wearing a clown mask. 28yearold jeremy anacito thought he struck a problem with whom he had a prior dispute. Witnesses say he was wearing a clown mask as he drove at the cyclist last month in a green pickup truck. Detectives found the pickup truck on wednesday with the clown mask inside and arrested him. The cyclist, a trance yent from santa kruz, suffered lifethreatening injuries and subpoena recovering at a trauma center. This morning, police want you to keep an eye out for this man. Hes a suspect in several Office Building burglaries. The burglaries were especially brazen because they all occurred during business hours. If you recognize him, police urge you to give them a call. A fastspreading respiratory infection that primarily affects infants and children is now in the bay area. Health officials are on alert. Its called the enterovirus d68. Three children so far have been diagnosed with the virus. One in Solano County and two in alameda county. Nationwide, there are 500 confirmed cases. Thats in 42 states. Breaking news, San Francisco firefighters are busy right now helping homeowners pump out water from their houses after a water main break this morning caused serious flooding in one neighborhood. Tiffany wilson is live in the bay view. Getting better, tiffany. Reporter yeah, it is getting better, kristen. That 12inch water main break happened about midnight. You can see a lot of activity right here behind me. This is actually good news. These are crews who are cleaning up an earlier barrier that had been made to help divert the water that was gushing down the street. Now you can see that water has slowed down. So they are cleaning it up. Again, the crews were able to shut off the water supply to that pipe several hours ago. So the situation now is much more in control. About half a dozen homes were flooded and some families woke up to flooded garages. Others woke up overnight to flooded basements. But with the firefighters able to create the barrier thats now being cleaned up, the flooding didnt impact as many homes as initially expected. At firts it was reported that several dozen homes had been flooded. Now its down to about six or seven. Tyrone with the San Francisco Public Utilities commission has been here all night long. Whats the situation now and whats happening next . Right new we have two pumps trying to pump down the amount of water so we can get access to the pipe. We cant see the pipe yet because the area is still full of water. So were working just to pump that water out. Once we can get access to it, well start the repairs. We do know it was definitely an old pipe that broke. It was a 1953 cast iron pipe. Those tend to be the ones that break due to old age. Reporter at this point, for families living in the area who dont have a water supply, whats the timeline you can give them for this pipe to be repaired and their water to be turned back on . At this point, i cant give an eta on when the repairs are going to be done. The fact they havent reached the pipeline yet doesnt mean they know what the repairs are going to be. There have also been reports of d68 causing limb weakness in some patients. There are different severity of weakness. Some may affect one to three or even four limbs. But the virus does stop on its own at some point. There is no vaccine for d68. Best way to avoid it, Health Experts say, is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, not just hand sanitizers. Doctors say you prevent the enterovirus just like any other virus. They recommend frequent hand washing. Especially critical if you ride public transit. Also avoid touching your eye, nose, or mouth. Cough into your sleeve or elbow. If you or your children are sick, stay home. Happening this morning, investigators will be back at the scene of a fire that burned three homes in oakland. Started just after 7 30 last night near mills college. Firefighters arrived and found a twostory home with flames coming from the top floor. It soon spread to two surrounding homes. One homeowner says hes just thankful his family got out safely. I think my son and my wife are, you know, devastated. Im devastated, of course. But my family got out safe. I got them. So i dont have a house right now, but you can rebuild that, right . So were okay. The fire brought down a power line, which landed on one of the fire trucks. The firefighter at the truck managed to get out of the way. Took crews more than two hours to get the fire under control. Berkeley police are investigating three reports of Sexual Assaults at uc berkeley. At least two say they were attacked at fromti tfraternitie. Students are just now finding out about them. Police have made no arrests. The names of the frat houses involved are not being released. Some students say theyre disappointed with the way this is being handled. I would expect to have received a notification from the university, but i havent received anything regarding any form of Sexual Assault. And we actually live on frat row. Its very concerning. Berkeley Police Issued this statement. Sexual assault investigations are complex and demand sensitive and professional investigation. New information in the Domestic Violence case against ray mcdonald. Police have finished their investigation into allegations he hit his pregnant fiance at their home.
