for the week ahead, coming up. breaking news out of richmond where a suspect has died in an officer-involved shooting. shortly after midnight, police responded to uncle sam's liquor store. officers are not saying what happened, but an altercation occurred leaving the suspect dead. the officer was not injured. as protocol he has been placed on administrative leave while that incident is being investigated by the richmond police and the district attorney's office. the extremist escalating violence to include political leaders. the video of a third western citizen includes a threat to david cameron. sergio quintana has more on this developing story. >> reporter: this still image of the moments before david haynes' execution looks familiar. the british voice is similar to that of that who killed james foley and steven sotloff. haynes is a british citizen. he was abduct ed in syria in march of 2013. his brother released a statement saying his joy and anticipation for the work he did in syria is for myself and family the most important element of this whole sad affair. he was and is loved by all his family and will be missed terribly. haynes had two children, a 4-year-old girl and teenage daughter. in his wedding pictures he wore a kilt proudly displaying his scottish heritage. president obama spoke about his strategy to counter isis. >> what's needed now is a targeted, relentless counterterrorism campaign that includes american air power, contributions from allies and partners, and more support to forces fighting these terrorists on the ground. >> reporter: u.s. secretary of state john kerry traveled to the middle east and spoke in egypt trying to build regional support for the strategy. >> it's only a matter of time before the threat of terrorism anywhere becomes a threat of terrorism everywhere. that is certainly been proven true in the case of isil. >> the terrorist threatens uk prime minister james cameron saying haynes' execution was retaliation for military coordination between the united kingdom and united states. prime minister cameron said, the murder of david haynes is an act of pure evil. sergio quintana, abc 7 news. slain journalist jaim foley's parents never knew what the government was doing. they say they were told they could be prosecuted for raising money to pay a ransom for his safe return. foley's family announced the legacy fund to support families of american hostages and aid american journalists reporting from conflict zones. on this week isis will dominate the discussions. white house chief of staff will talk about the latest on the administration's strategy against the extremist group. you can see this week with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 this morning. sheriffs deputies are investigating the shooting death of a woman at her glen allen home. it was just before 7:00 last night when a man called 911. he reported his wife had attacked him with a knife and that he shot her. deputies discovered the victim's body and said the husband was bed rridden and not able to wal. they have not said if he's been taken into custody. police tried to look at surveillance footage to see if they can link anyone to a suspicious device near a hotel. it was around 10:30 yesterday morning. patrol officers asked explosive experts to try to determine what that device was. >> they examined it visually, did a canvas for witnesses, evidence. we basically took it as far as we could take it without touching it it. finally, we made the decision to open it up and often times that renders safe, which is what it did today. >> they say the device was harmless. most of the hotel remained open for the six hours it took the bomb squad to give the all clear. only the second and first floors were closed. drivers faced delays after a truck made a mess in livermore. yesterday heavy equipment had to be brought in to clean up the truck's cargo. you see all the wood on westbound interstate 580. it blocked the three right lanes near isabel avenue just before 8:00 yesterday morning. the closure lasted through the afternoon. one person was hurt. the highway patrol is investigating that crash. oakland firefighters capped a leaking propane tank after an suv pulling a trailer overturned. the chp tweeted out this photo. the wreck forced them to close all eastbound lanes on i-580 yesterday afternoon for about 25 minutes. the suv's driver and his wife went to the hospital. chp investigators believe their vehicle was the only one involved in the crash. developing news from southern california, an evacuation order remains in effect for 200 homes in orange county. as a wildfire continues to burn in the cleveland national forest. flames have charred 1,500 acres. the fire is only 10% contained. it broke out friday morning in the middle of a heat wave. triple digit temperatures are expected again today. that plus rugged terrain are making it tough for the more than 800 firefighters battling those flames. a brush fire has destroyed at least seven homes, more are being threatened. that fire broke out yesterday afternoon of unknown causes. a viewer provided this video of smoke from that fire. so far the flames have burned at least 125 acres. red cross workers have set up a shelter for people who have lost their homes and for those whose homes have been evacuated. you night notice some construction work going on if you're headed across the golden gate bridge today. the work involves realigning the southbound lanes near the toll plaza. those lanes are being moved slightly toward the center of the roadway. that will give crews more space to finish construction on the southbound side of the roadway and build a shoulder. today is the 49ers much anticipated home opener against the bears as well as another test for the new levi stadium. crews have been working to get everything ready. nick smith has the details. >> reporter: the wait is nearly over and the final security pieces are being put in place. levi stadium is welcoming more than 70,000 49ers fans to the first really season game in the new stadium. chris francis made the trip from rancho koouk money ga. >> i expect them to kick butts. >> reporter: the couple plans to head to avoid the traffic troubles that have been association with game day at le vie stadium. after four sporting events, attempts to solve the parking and transportation woes have been mixed. long lines for trains, cars backing upside streets, signs warning of parking restrictions and confusing detours have left many frustrated drivers scratching their heads. tom johnson has never missed a home game. he's staying at the nearby hilton to avoid traffic issues. >> we're 25-year candlestick veterans. >> reporter: the hotel put up these signs, but another concern may be the heat. >> i don't think it will be too bad. >> reporter: during the preseason game, there were a number of heat-related calls. attemptin atemperatures could reach 81 degrees. >> if we win, i don't care. >> reporter: the mayor is hoping that before fans head to the game, they will help children in need by having a bite with him through the pancake breakfast. >> all proceeds go to help our homeless children. it's hard to believe, but there's a lot of underresourced children that need a little bit of help. >> reporter: football and fundraising, what could be better than that. in santa clara, nick smith, abc 7 news. the parking lots at levi stadium will open. at 1:30 this afternoon. gates open at 2:30. fans are asked to be in their seats by 5:00 p.m. for a special website at abc7news.com. lisa, nick talked a little bit about the heat in his story there. is that going to be a problem? >> we should see highs in the low 80s there. so certainly a warm day in the south bay. the on shore push not that strong throughout the day. so waiting for a significant cooldown. some clouds. also next using cameras to fight crime. a bay area city wants more electronic eyes on the streets, but in this case, they belong to civilians, not the cops. and chef rachael ray's a north bay city is hoping to add hundreds of new crime fighting tools to its police force. they are encouraging anyone with a security camera to join a new registry. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story. >> reporter: he says it's the best investment he's ever made. four security cameras inside and out watching over his restaurant 24/7. it reports everything the camera sees. cameras have come in handy three or four times when stuff behind the bar went missing. he was on board with the plan for a registry of security cameras to help them fight crime faster wherever it happens. >> instead of spending an entire day walking a block, the first person i would go to is someone on this database, knock on their door, they show me evidence. >> reporter: the program is strictly voluntary. anyone with a camera can sign up. last january this security camera video identified a suspected serial arsonist in san jose leading to his arrest. but there are privacy concerns and how the information will be used. christine works at this shopping center. she says safety outweighs everything else. >> we have too many invasive things happening in our life. but there's already cameras everywhere you go. >> reporter: the cameras are on duty. >> this can see who broke a window, did something bad. this can catch them. >> reporter: it's a small, safe city and they'd like to keep it that way. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. as part of his effort to raise money for a permanent korean war memorial in san francisco, korean war veteran wally stewart will make the swim this morning from al ka trapezius to san francisco. the race starts in the water near the island. it ends at the south end rolling club. in the water with wally where his grandson he made the swim five times back in the '70s and '80s. he knows he's in for quite the challenge. if you want to give where you live, we have added a link to the korean war memorial foundation and that is on our website. do you like chocolate? this weekend you should go to the 19th annual chocolate festival in san francisco. visitors are satisfying their sweet tooth while raising money for project open hand. the organization delivers meals and groceries to people living with hiv and aids. more than 30 venders are handsing out samples of all things chocolate. cupcakes, ice cream, while chefs demonstrate how to cook gourmet meals. there's also a school so guests can learn how chocolate is made. the festival runs today from noon to 5:00 p.m. rachael ray's new season starts tomorrow here on abc 7. she stopped by about a week and a half ago and we got a chance to spend a bit of time with her and get her list of seven things everyone needs for the kitchen. >> the very first thing you have to have is a sharp knife. your best friend. whether you know how to sharpen knives yourself or take it to someone, you can resharpen a good, old kitchen knife. the second thing is a huge cutting board. when i lived in one room, i had a big cutting board and used it -- i put it over the top of my tiny sink and created a counterspace and could position it next to the stove. you need a 6-quart or larger pot. pastas, chilies and need a pot to transfer to the oven so you can use it to roast. then you want a deep stove with a lid. you want it to be shallow enough to cook an egg or steak or bugger, but deep enough to also do a chili. a garbage bowl. any bucket or thing you keep on the counter so when you're cooking, you don't have to run around the kitchen to the garbage, recycling bin, here and there throwing the scraps away. next thing you need in your kitchen is whatever relaxes you. something to put you in a good mood when you're cooking in the kitchen. salt and pepper and then high temperature and cooking oil. a good oil you can use on salads. and then a high temperature olive oil. so your oil. >> i was going to say, is it on the list? >> of course, lucky number seven. >> even if you have a small kitchen, you can utilize the space and have the multiple pots and pans so you don't have to have a ton of things. >> watch rachael ray every weekday at 3:00 p.m. and it starts tomorrow. i hope the chef in my household was watching that. >> good information for sure. we're looking at a pretty mild start once again. the fog has not made its way inland. it's clear in more areas than it is cloudy. the sun officially up at 6:51. it sets at 7:19. that gives us 12 hours of daylight. it's a cloudy start for you in santa rosa and mountain view. temperatures this morning in san francisco at 59. oakland at 60. half-moon bay, 5-mooif visibility and the fog will stay put today. you can make out the stratus here. the cool spot with 60 by the delta. clear conditions in the inland valley for livermore. so 94 and 98 respectively yesterday. so numbers managed to stay out of the triple digits. today, about the same. we'll get into a pretty good sea breeze this afternoon, but not quite strong enough to bring you out of those 90s in our inland valleys. so high clouds and some stratus this morning along the coast. seasonal temperatures there. we're talking about 60s with more 90s arriving inland. but the cooler pattern still is on cue to bring us a cooler workweek. as we take a look at some of the statements from the national weather service, this has been highlighted. a beach hazard with a small but strong swell getting going later on this morning through monday night. this provides a strong risk of rip currents and from the beach all the way down to santa cruz, very dangerous conditions here as the surf really gets going today. so be advised of that. we're looking at an area of low pressure dropping out of the pacific northwest that will bring the stronger on shore flow and deepen the marine layer. just a pretty significant breeze around the bay today, but the cool air is forecasted to head your way in the inland valleys for tomorrow. as for today, we have plenty of 80s in the south bay with the temperature at 5:30 in santa clara in the low 80s. so pretty comfortable through the evening hours. another warm day on the way. a few high clouds with 90 in morgan hill. 82 in sunniville. peninsula numbers, at the coast low 60s. look for the fog to stay put. in the north bay, 83 in petluma. more 70s from richmond. you head inland, we have 90s. instead of the upper 90s, low to mid-90 ez today. a couple degrees cooler for you today. the seven-day forecast, the today the warmest day out of the next seven and the cooling trend for tomorrow, tuesday and wednesday looking good with increasing clouds by the middle of the week. and then the temperatures really around average with mid-80s inland and near 80 around the bay u. we'll let you know how warm it will be by keeping track of bay area weather on twitter. so still dry. >> yeah, but i'm looking forward to the begins at 11:00 this morning. also happening today, a celebration of one of the largest play field renovations in san francisco. it is located on capital avenue. it's named after long-time community at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, everyone. startsing out with low clouds and fog. a nice picture with san francisco at 59. it's clear in napa. and clear in our inland valleys with a pretty good southwest wind up to 29 miles an hour. so we lost a few degrees inland yesterday. today about the same. it's going to be a slow cooler trend with more dramatic cooling getting underway for the workweek. today in san francisco look for upper 60s. we'll look for upper 80s to mid-90s in our valleys. . and in oakland today, mid-70s around the bay. so we'll look at our wide ranging temperatures and talk in detail about our cooling trend coming up. the nfl is scrambling to explain itself following an epidemic of domestic violence involving players. the latest incident involves the minnesota vikings adrian peterson. we have an update on his legal troubles. >> he's going to go all the way, touchdown! >> reporter: it may be quite some time before adrian peterson make s it to the end zone again. one of the nfl's top running backs is on the bench, out on bail and under indictment by a grand jury. he traveled from his minnesota home to turn himself in in this texas jail. the vooikings star was releasedn $15,000 bond. his alleged crime, hitting his 4-year-old son with a switch here at his sprawling mansion outside houston causing injuries to butt tox, thigh and join the two doctors called child abuse. >> a grand jury looked at the injuries that were inflicted on the child and determined that that discipline was not reasonable. >> reporter: his lawyer says the incident involves using a switch to spank his son. the same kind of discipline he experienced as a child growing up in east texas. >> adrian peterson said he was just disciplining his son and trying to give him a good old fashioned whooping at the time. obviously law enforcement differs. >> reporter: it's the latest storm in the season of discontent with the nfl still rocky u from the handling of ray rice's assault. the league has brought in former fbi director to investigate that case. also smoldering the conviction of july of greg hardy. he will play sunday without punishment from the league or the team. and the season is barely two weeks old. abc news, new york. >> former ravens star ray rice appeared in public yesterday, the first time since being suspended for abusing his wife. rice and his family watched a high school football game from the sidelines. in his hometown in new york just north of new york city. rice's wife was with him and their daughter there. the nfl suspended rice last monday after a video surfaced of him knocking her out in a casino elevator earlier this year. nfl commissioner roger goodell will be the target of banners fly iing over league gas today. they will say goodell must go, it's part of a campaign by a national women's advocacy organization. members want goodell to resign because of his deceptive behavior in handling the ray rice incident and subsequent penalties. one of the banners will fly over levi stadium today. downtown napa's only grocery store is still closed because of damage done in the earthquake three weeks ago. safeway has not said if or when the store on clay and jefferson streets will reopen. a company representative says the quake caused extensive damage that must first be evaluated. city inspectors have yellow tagged the building about 50 employees have gone to work at other safeway stores in the area including a second location on jefferson street. if you still have debris from the quake that you'd like to get rid of, time is running out. napa's quake debris dropoff site will close tonight at 10:00. the last remaining debris dropoff site at third will stay open for a few more days. the recycling is sorting the debris and materials. they will recycle as much as possible. and this weekend on beyond the headlines, the recovery effort after the earthquake and how the cities of napa are coming back. cheryl jennings talks to the mayors of both cities and looks at the support they are getting from the community. she hosts "beyond the headlines" this morning at 10:00 here on abc 7. prince harry turns the big 3-0 tomorrow. cause for a weekend full of birthday celebrations. the youngest son of the late princess dianna hopped in a wheelchair and took to the court in the games exhibition rugby match. he created this event using sports as a means of recovery for 400 wounded veterans from 13 countries. >> he's still the prince, but there's the comradery of knowing he's been on the battlefield and he's one of us. >> his sister-in-law watched from the stands. his brother william and sister-in-law kate planned a private party for harry at the palace. and now at age 30, harry will inherit more than $17 million from his mom's estate. some of of the most beautiful women in the country will be competing tonight for the title of miss america. you can see it right here on abc 7. abc's tahman bradley reports it's been four days of grueling competition for the young women to get to tonight's final. >> for these beautiful and intelligent women, the wait is over. tonight one of them will take the crown. last night the ladies were all smiles marching on the boardwalk even though their heels got wet. four days of competition showcasing their interview skills, talent and their swim suits and evening gowns. in the category of lifestyle and fitness in swim suit, miss florida, oklahoma and maryland emerged from the back. talent, miss ohio, a van tril kwis. miss kentucky and miss pennsylvania. there was also the heart pounding interview with the judges. >> they asked about isis, foreign policy. it's such a big topic in the news now. it's a difficult question for anybody to answer. >> reporter: this year's pageant comes with stress. ka s casinos are closing. for more new jersey, it's personal. >> me being the daughter of two casino workers, people realize i'm a tangible person and they are capitalizing on that as a source to look for hope for the future. >> reporter: new this year a behind the scenes preshow on abc that's going to be great. 53 contestants by the 2015 miss america competition at 9:00. today is the annual san francisco comedy day. this year it includes a special tribute organizers will honor robin williams at the start of the fest. william hs a long history with the long event. he performed the first comedy day three decades ago. comedy day takes place in golden gate park at noon. it's free. some of the head liners will include margaret cho. also happening today a bike ride in celebration of robin williams' life. they will start either in san francisco or the java hut in fairfax. both will ride around the peninsula on the traditional paradise loop and head back to reminisce about williams. robin williamss was a biking enthusiast. still ahead on the abc 7 sunday morning news, the makeover for a family shelter in a rough bay area neighborhood. thanks to some students with an eye for design. and here's a live weather look from our exploratory cam. today will be the hottest day of the week. lisa argen will be along with all the temperatures and your forecast in ju iphone 6 plus this week, it's not going to happen probably. preorders for the new gadget rolled out friday and sold out within hours. there's now a three to four-week wait for the new phone. but there's hope the smaller iphone 6 is set to ship within ten days. the new line of iphones is expected in stores september 19th. lisa argen here now talking about a really hot day. >> we're going to be out of the 70s for the first time all week long. in fact, today we'll see some upper 60s. here's a look at our roof camera, but the fog is confined to the shoreline. we'll talk about how cool it's going to get in the days ahead, that's coming up. also coming up, the giants had a chance to tie the dodgers for the nl west league. but the bats woke up in a neighborhoods have received a makeover compliments of students from a trendy design school. this redo is brightening the shelter as well as the residents' spirits. the fashion institute of design and merchandising is located in san francisco's union square just a few blocks from the tenderloin but worlds apart. until recently. >> we thought it was the paint color. we wanted to design the space differently and make it warm and welcoming. >> she's one of 17 students who transformed the family shelter where 22 families live. their before pictures show community spaces and the young designers went to work. they learned how to tile the kitchen by watching youtube videos and painted the sitting room. he says the makeover has lifted his spirits. >> now that they have redesigned the kitchen. it means more like home. >> family cans stay up to six months. the case manager says a classy setting makes a difference. >> often people isolate during homelessness. people come down here, they talk small talk, share resources and extends our community. >> from the paints on the walls to the toys to for the children, everything was donated. >> it's nice to be able to help people as a way to restart their journey too. >> it took those students just two days over two weeks to make those changes that are going to be long lasting. we're looking at temperatures today that will be slightly cooler than yesterday. but nothing too dramatic. we're saving that for the workweek where numbers will come down an additional 5 to 7 degrees. low clouds and fog hugging the coast. and it has been hot all across the state. we saw minor cooling yesterday. mid-70s at the airport all week long. we have been in the upper 60s in downtown san francisco. and today we'll be fairly similar, although the on shore wind will allow for a nice sea breeze in the afternoon around the bay. southwest facing beaches looking at a strong swell. and changes ahead for more seasonal weather as we head into the workweek. 59 in san jose. 56 for you. it's 60 in oakland. 59 and a look at our explore tore yum camera. clear skies in napa. concorde is at 60. and that southwest wind nearly at 30 miles an hour up by the delta. so numbers were out of the triple digits yesterday. more than 90s in store. a few high clouds throughout the day today. it will be seasonal at the coast with 60s there. and a nice range once again into the mid-90s. but the cooler pattern will arrive in earnest tomorrow with temperatures coming out of the 90s. so national weather service issued a beach hazard statement from 11:00 today until tomorrow night with a risk of a strong rip current from the coastline all the way down through santa cruz. so dangerous surf here developing and we'll be watching it in the next day. it's also been very, very warm with another day in the 90s today for livermore. forecasting a high in the upper 90s. the average high in the mid-80s. we'll stay that way throughout most of the week. by next weekend, we could see more in the way of warmth head our way. statewide, you see the high clouds and heat advisories from southern california. in san diego, hot at the beaches as well as los angeles. humid there, 95 degrees. 100 in sacramento today. monterey just a couple degrees cooler today. if you are headed over to park the sea breeze sets up and will be comfortable in the 60s by 4:00. also in oakland this afternoon, low 70s. kickoff with mid-70s. sunny conditions around the bay today and 73 in richmond. 64 at half-moon bay. 80 in fremont with a few more high clouds around the south bay, but plenty of sun and warmth at 92. the seven-day forecast with the numbers coming down tomorrow, it should be pretty pleasant around the bay, but more cooling perhaps for you in the inland east bay. that will take place by the middle of the week. a few more clouds midweek. 80 around the bay. mid-60s near the coast. the fog has not gone anywhere. folks in san francisco and around the
