He already admitted to shooting Reeva Steenkamp at his home last year. He said he mistook her for an intruder. The prosecution says pistorius is a gun obsessed risk taker who shot steenkamp in a fit of rage. His defense is, it was a mistake and a reasonable person could have made the same mistake. Fair enough but thats a tough defense considering that Oscar Pistorius shot his own girlfriend in his own home multiple times, you would think it might be a victory for them if the judge only convicts him of a lesser crime of culpable homicide meaning it was a negligent shooting. If convicted pistorius could face a life sentence. Heavy rains in brazil caused some damage at a soccer stadium that will host the world cup later this year. Several pieces of metal used to collect water off the roof became detached and fell onto the field near the benches and onto the stands. It happened hours before the stadium was scheduled to host a regional championship. No one was injured. The a Conservation Group has come up with an innovative way to make water go further in california. Its helping millions of birds migrating through california. Dan ashley shows us in this mornings assignment report its helping farmers. 8 million birds a year travel along the pacific flyway through california Central Valley but 95 of the wetlands they depend on are gone, so a lot of large birds now rely on flooded rice fields for a place to rest and east but rice farmers usually drain their fields in january, that means theres no habitat for smaller shore birds that need wetlands later in february and march. So a nonprofit called the Nature Conservancy has come up with a solution using data from citizen scientists. It starts with a website called ebird where amateur bird watchers post their sightings. Millions and millions of entries that amateur birders put into it from all over the United States our data scientists process that information and they create this sort of a map which tells us exactly when and where these birds are. Reporter scientists combine that with other information to predict the need for bird habitat. We manipulated the images to make it easier to see. Darker blue means birds expected but not wetlands available. For example around february 26th, wetlands are needed here, southwest of chico as you could see. Fast forward another month, a month later to march 26th, the greater need is going to be here, south of sacramento. This is fantastic. Reporter abc 7 news went up to a farm in yuba county and using video shot by the Nature Conservancy to see how the program works, one of the areas targeted by the computer data. Weve never before had the ability to look week by week when birds need habitat. Reporter scientist Mark Reynolds points out a huge flock hanging out in a flooded rice field. They breed in the high arctic and come down thousands of miles to the Central Valley of california and they look for habitats like this. Reporter the conservancy is paying farmers including doug thomas to keep the fields flooded longer. They submit baids based on thei costs. Were not adding any water, just holding the stuff we have. Reporter its win win. It sustains us on a financial basis. Reporter and helps the yellow legs that need wetlands now. 4 farmers created 10,000 acres of bird habitat, especially critical in a drought year. Theyre on a wing and a prayer headed through the valley every year and its neat to be a part of that. Reporter dan ashley, abc 7 news. The conservancy doesnt want to reteveal how much theyre paying farmers, all of the money comes from private donations. To contribute, we have links at abc7news. Com under see it on tv. Not the perfect day to go out and do some bird watching, weve got some showers out there but we need the rain, lisa. Too bad its not more. Were not going to be picky. Unfortunately these systems do not contain a lot of rain and theyre not strong, and not everyone will see the rain, so well time it out for you in a few moments. First you can see whats offshore its the cold front that is unorganized and as we sit to the east of it, that onshore flow will bring intermittent light showers from time to time and overall will be stuck in the pattern throughout much of the work week, a stronger system heads our way by midweek, looks like maybe wednesday and thursday we could see some precip down around the south bay and our east bay valleys. The activities if we see anything at all will be well up to the north bay, ukiah, clover dale, spotty showers throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains. Few peeks of sun, temperatures in the 60s but notice throughout the afternoon well see more dry conditions and the chance of showers remains mainly focused into the north bay. Its pretty humid out here and a few scattered showers throughout the overnight but live doppler 7 hd shows theres a little activity offshore and to the north of us in the Santa Cruz Mountains so were keeping it in the forecast even though theres nothing really organized and the bulk of the day well be underneath a mostly cloudy sky with weak High Pressure in control. So heres a look at the north bay where it is dry and well look for the bulk of the afternoon to be dry. Temperatures starting out at about 50 san ramon valley, concord and livermore, San Francisco a little bit milder as well as oakland, mid to upper 50s, so the forecast throughout the rest of the day calling for the upper 50s to near 60 with a chance of showers along the coast as well as the Higher Elevations but overall some low to mid60s, a few sunny breaks and were going to look at a couple of weak weather systems visiting us throughout the week ahead. Now its making sense. Just kidding, no. My claim to fame is knowing the famous katie marzullo. We all know her. Good morning, everyone. Yesterday we did pick up 0. 3 in San Francisco so that brought us over to 8 inches of precip for the year, which is 44 of normal. Kind of pultrey but live doppler 7 hd showing moisture offshore but we have mist and drizzle in the Higher Elevations around santa cruz and looking at cloudy skies overall for the entire bay area and we will look for maybe a chance of rain throughout the next couple of days, but amounting to once again just a couple hundreds, maybe a tenth from the north bay. East bay hills camera this morning looking nice, throw mid50s. 55 in the city as well as down in san jose, 54 los gatos, Half Moon Bay at 54 degrees and from our exploratorium camera it is cloudy outside and as a result temperatures fairly uniform with not a big spread. 50 by the delta, as well as the Livermore Valley and concord, santa rosa, checking in at 52 degrees. From our tower camera our forecast highlights for your sunday just a few lightkn ÷n isd showers perhaps from time to time this morning, but they will be widely scattered and that will take us through the rest of the day today, a few sunny breaks and well look for more opportunities for rain for the first couple days of march. The best one coming throughout the middle of the week. Here is our pacific satellite picture. There is the front but not only with the cloud cover you need the dynamics and we dont have the dynamics with this system, so as a result its a lot of overrunning moisture from today, tomorrow and the opportunity for the best chance of showers up in the north bay. So well keep it in the forecast and actually the sevenday outlook looks for promising than what will materialize for the rest of the day today. Weve got the clouds to start out, 7 00, maybe some mist and drizzle, a few light showers throughout the Early Morning hours and by the afternoon notice the bulk of the day will be cloudy with a chance of showers. So well look for temperatures on the mild side throughout the day today and as we go through the rest of the week, theres the monday forecast, tuesday looks like were going to be the driest afternoon and wednesday into thursday here is our next system maybe 0. 1 to perhaps 0. 25 of an inch of rain and High Pressure builds in further on friday for mostly sunny conditions. Highs today around the state upper 50s with showers from eureka, low 60s chico, los angeles. Notice sunshine there and in the low 60s so 62 in the city, richmond today 66 in livermore and down in los angeles dont have to worry about getting wet, better chance of more clear skies and dry conditions than the other with just a slight chance of showers. The accuweather sevenday forecast will keep a chance in the forecast today, tomorrow, dry on tuesday, better chance of rain for everyone comes in wednesday and thursday and were looking dry on friday into saturday and next weekend we do spring ahead, matt, so we have that to look forward to, the longer days, less sleep but that time of year already.
