alto man who has been held captive for more than a month now. abc7 news reporter ama daetz shows us the video posted by the news agency. it shows 85-year-old newman reading an apology letter. >> these are the first agages we are seeing from merrill newman since he was detained more than a month ago. he's reading from what is called an apology letter that explains what he did against the north when he fought in the north korean war. >> they attacked communication systems and killed three innocent operators. >> the korean central agency report said he masterminded espionage and subversive activities against the dprk and in this he was involves in killing army personnel and innocent civilians. earlier this week his wife broke her silence, pleading for his release. >> we hope whatever the misunderstanding is will be resolved very quickly and that he can return and be at our table for the holidays. >> what is not clear is who wrote the alleged apology letter. in the past the north korean government has been accused of coercing statements from detain. in the video newman promised to tell the truth about the country if they let him go. a possible indication of his release. >> i can understand that in u.s. and russian countries there is misleading information and propaganda about dpr of k. >> abc news has contacted the state department to see if they have reviewed the video and have anything to stay about it. we've also reached out to through man's family in the bay area. so far no wore from either. ama daetz, abc7 news. >> newman is a korean war veteran. he was on a ten-day trip to the country last month but was removed it from his plane by government officials just as his flight was there to take off. that was october 267th. his family -- october 26th. his family has had no contact with him since. >> a plane crashed last night, air alaska flight 373 was a single engine turbopot 208. the flight from bethel to saint mary's village went down near its destination about 470 miles from anchorage. the pilot was killed, and three passengers, including a baby boy. the condition of the surviving passengers is not known. the state spokeswoman said they are assisting the survivors. also developing news in africa. a plane has crashed killing all 33 people on board. that's 27 passengers and six crewmembers. a deputy police member said it crashed in a national park near the border with angola. no word on what went wrong there. a major search and rescue operation continues this hour at a crowded public in glasgow, scotland after a helicopters crashed in the roof. 32 people are at the hospital. there were more than 100 inside the club attending a live music event when the copter crashed lift night. they are making sure everyone is accounted for. new this morning all lanes of the dumbarton bridge are open again after a fatality on the bridge. the bridge crossth south bay reopened to traffic just after 1:00 this morning. it was shut down at 11:00 last night to investigate the beth of a pedestrian who was hit by several vehicles on the westbound side near the poll plaza. the man was dressed in black and had been walking in lanes. a north bay police officer made his 100th drunk driving arrest of 2013 this week. >> i firmly believe that it does save lives, and that's one of the main reasons i do the job. >> officer kevin mcdougle of the san rafael police department has received awards from mothers against drunk driving in each of the last six years and he could receive another this year. he made his 100th dui arrest of the year after pulling over a driver who ran a red life. his commanding officer told us his extra efforts are making a difference. >> he's made our community a lot safer. he's probably kept a lot of people from getting on the street intoxicated, and that just goes to his level of dedication. >> it's just something that i like to do and i have done four long time. i think i'm pretty good at it. >> officer mcdougle said he looks for obvious violations like speeding or running a light or stop sign, and he says about half the people he arrests for dui thought they were okay to drive. happening today, the shopping focus shifts from big box retailers and major chains to small businesses. mom and pop shops will take part in small business saturday nationwide and in the bay area. people are encouraged to patronize their locally-owned stores. event was started in 2010 by a credit card giant, american express burks it quickly received the endorsement of the u.s. senate and small business administration. thousands of shoppers in the bay area hit the big stores for black friday yesterday. but among the deal seekers, demonstrators were also out in force protesting wal-mart. abc7 news steady stream of business throughout black friday. alan wang. abc7 news. >> 15 people were arrested during a protest at a wal-mart in roseville near sacramento. 15 people broke off to the protest and marred to a busy intersection and sat down. police said they were arrested for failing to disburse. despite a few problems, most grab friday events went smoothly. many said it wasn't as crowd as expected. sales are spreading out because so many shop online or through mobile devices. tracking said online sales on black friday rose 9% from last year. ebay saw a 35% increase and amazon saw a 25ters increase. for some customers the deals this year just didn't turn their heads. >> i thought it would be better. i mean, you see commercials on tv that say, you know, flat screens for $100. i didn't see any kind of that stuff. there are some good savings in there. >> retailers that opened early on thanksgiving day still say they saw relatively big crowds, an indication of what might be a new shopping tradition. store sales numbers will be released later today. check out this time-lapse video showing the hordes of shoppers marching through san francisco's union square yesterday. macy's has been busy since its early opening thanksgiving night at 8:00. makes your head spin. cyber monday is two days away and that's what millions of bargain seeking customers will go online to continue shopping. cyber monday sales last year tripled to almost $1.5 billion compared to 2011. this year's figure is expected to be higher and could be the biggest on record. booming online sales means a busy time for delivery services. federal express said it will have the busiest day in company history on cyber monday, handling more than to 20 million shipments. developing news on the newest bart contract agreement. the unions are going to sue bart for voting to approve the contract minus a disputed clause. section 4.8 would have given workers up to six weeks paid family medical leave but bart said it never meant to agree to that and voted in november to approve the $67 million contract deal only if that clause was removed. the unions now are preparing to file a lawsuit against the district next week, not to get that leave clause put back in, but to challenge the unprecedented move by the board. we are told the lawsuit calls it an attack on the collective bargaining process. meanwhile bart riders, frustrate the over this never-ending saga. >> management not even bothering to read a final contract. if i were to do that, i would be fired instanceiously. >> it's hard to understand what exactly is at fault, but the problem still seems to be that there doesn't seem to be any kind of spirit of cooperation or trust. >> union sources say they still want to work with bart on a apartments. the police won't say much about what led to the killing and the victim's identity has not been released. this morning a vallejo shooting suspect is in custody after he made his getaway in a boat. investigators say the man shot another person near highway 37 yesterday afternoon and escaped on the either water. the u.s. coast guard pulled him over and arrested him. shooting victim was taken to the hospital. police are be looking for a man who robbed a bank of america bran inch walnut creek yesterday. these are surveillance photos of the robbery in the rossmoor shopping center. he went into the bank at 5:00 p.m. and handed over a note demanding money. he's a white man in miss 20s, about 6 feet tall with a thin build and a light gotee. >> happening today, there will be a memory of a toddler who was shot and killed two years ago. there will be a car wash. it honors the life of the man who died in 2011. there was a gun fight in the parking lot where his family's taco truck was parked. it's at 78th and mcarthur boulevard. it will go for a scholarship that's been set up for a family member. and thanks to our viewers, a familiar football team will contend for the national >> abc7 news. >> a hope homecoming in alameda last night to welcome home a coast guard cutter that's been deployed in alaska the last few months. the crew were deployed for 109 days in alaska paw controlling the bearing sea and arctic ocean. they did search and rescue missions and patrolled the open waters enforcing fishing laws. must be nice to be back in the bayer and to a nice, sunny weekend. >> yeah, yeah. deja vu. in fact we are look at fog this morning. switching things up a little bit and another spare the air. unfortunately we are going to have to stay away from the burning and have those hazy conditions once again, especially in the north bear. here's a look at the doppler hd where the clouds are visiting us and low level moisture. here's a look from the roof camera. you notice how it looks pretty foggy here. downtown san francisco temperatures have dropped into the 40s. 41 redwood city. san jose good morning, 44. half moon bay some very dense fog there. and a look from our sutro tower camera. you can see that the view looks pretty good from above. it's really at the surface and in san francisco where we are looking at low clouds. cool numbers up in the north bay with the clear skies. just 38 in napa. it's 40 out by the delta. 42 in concord. and finally this is our east bay hills camera. so spare the air again today. this is our fourth one for the winter season. mild pattern throughout the weekend with temperatures as much as 10 degrees to 15 degrees above average in some spots, but we are looking for much cooler weather. in fact the cool down begins on monday when we return to work. more cooling for tuesday into wednesday. here's a look at the visibility. with only a quarter mile here half moon bay, sfo is okay right now. but you can see from our cameras and if you live in the city how foggy it is out there. so with the spare the air day in place today, it has been awfully hazy. parts of the north bay, even the east bay valley, as well. the air quality poor north of the golden gate. and elsewhere not so great, but it could be better. we will try to abstain from the woodburning throughout the day today. but we need a weather system to come in here and mix things out, get wind and clear out the atmosphere. perhaps we are going to see that but we are definitely going to see a replacement of this mild air mass. we have high clouds right now, but with that we will look for them to burn off. as that fog evaporates, the hazy sunshine, and in fact mostly sunny conditions today. you can see the plan by 10:00, 11:00. we've got sunny conditions and with high pressure nosing into the west coast and that light offshore flow in the upper elevations, it is going to be another one of those days where you are peeling off the layers towards the afternoon. so high temperatures today, you know, santa rosa it should be 59 degrees. so with upper 60s to near 70 forecast. you can see just how mild it is even on the coast. 64 half moon bay. if you are up toward point raise, mid-and upper 60s there. 69 in morgan hill. the accuweather seven-day forecast looks like temperatures coming up a few degrees tomorrow. then we will see on shore push on monday and tuesday. look at the temperatures, just in the 50s, a slight chance of showers even into wednesday and thursday. chilly out there with freezing temperatures overnight
