of home break-ins. the police chief posted this message to the piedmont residents yesterday. the chief says patrols are being beefed up. police in nearby san leandro are also looking into a string of break-ins. two suspects were caught on camera breaking into a home and officials say there were five-break-ins over the last week. police met with concerned neighbors last night who say if someone comes to your house, make their presence known. >> when the doorbell rings, let them know you are in the house. then they will go away. >> police are also asking residents to install extra lights to scare off criminals. breaking news in the search for a missing sailor from san francisco. >> he was trying to set a new world record. jessica is at the live desk with more on that. >> overnight, the coast guard suspended their search for the man now presumed dead after taking off from san francisco nine days ago. here's a picture of that chinese sailor. he was well-known by attempting to set a record by sailing to china. here's video of the search efforts. the navy team helping in the search found his life vest but no sign of him. he was well-known in china as part of a racing team there for the national team. they have gotten his belongings and taken them to his family. overnight, the coast guard sent out condolences to the 50-year-old's family and friends. the coast guard spent two of earthquakes following two major quakes yesterday. look at the siseismic activity yesterday. the most recent aftershock hit at 1:30 this morning. all the activity about 100 miles from the capital city of oklahoma. no deaths or even major injuries are been reported. and there are no reports of anyone trapped in rubble. the biggest problems are rescuers are fearful of mudslides. many are recovering from a powerful quake that killed 300 people two months ago. 4:34 now. in the south bay protestors are vowing to keep fighting the expansion of a nearby landfill. interestingly, the newby landfill is in milpitas. milpitas wants it closed but the commission already approved the expansion. people who live nearby say the smell is so bad they are forced to stay indoors. so last night dozens of protestors showed up at a meeting in city hall in san jose. many ended up disappointed. a public hearing on the expansion was pushed back because three commissioners were absent. the landfill's general manager said they also need more time to review a new older study. >> they are hoping that they are going to get tired and won't show up and can move it past and then the expansion happens and guess who is going to suffer? happening today, the star of the show in cupertino is supposed to be the macbrook pro. we found images supported by mack rivers of the new macbrook pro. are upset about it. the state regulators need to link the increase linked to the closure of the nuclear power plant. the berkeley-based group environmental progress says pg&e is being deceptive. they section of the daly city coast. it was first spotted a quarter mile offshore. ernesto fong went hiking to find it. >> i don't want to drive down there even though it is really close. but right now it's an extra home, so it gives me a reason to take a hike down. >> reporter: the marine mammal center will be leading a team of scientists to be conducting a necropsy. they rep responded to 30 of these calls this year, but they have only responded to seven calls being a blue whale. a female carrying a fetus washed ashore of blunt force trauma after being hit by a ship. blue wheales can measure up to 8 feet and weigh several tons. residents came to the cliffs to see it for themselves and were not disappointed. >> it is really big. i have never seen a whale in person. it is pretty amazing, actually. >> reporter: as to how the wheal died, scientists could conduct the necropsy as early as thursday. >> we have been talking about it all week long and now it is here, the rain is back. and it's significant, too, on the storm impact scale. >> mike nicco is tracking that. it's a two, so that is more moderate than the one we saw earlier this week. looking south on 101, it's dry right now. but showers to heavy rain, ponding likely heading throughout the afternoon. and even the overnight hours, we have periods of heavy rain to continue. it will be wettest on sunday if you're making plans. here's the setup, here we are, san francisco, live doppler 7, look at all the bright whiteness. that's a high amount of moisture. not only coming from the storm, but also tapping into hurricane seymour. because of that, the high moisture plume is the reason to get a lot of rain out of this system. too much in the national forest. that's why we have a flash flood watch for this afternoon and the debris flows from the various fires in the area. we'll talk about the storm impact scale, moderate today through tomorrow. .75 to 1.5 inches of rain. you could have 2 to 4 inches in the hills. the best chance is during the north bay throughout most of the morning hours. then we'll transition over as we head to the afternoon and evening hours. you can see more yellows and more oranges starting to roll in during the evening and the overnight hours through tomorrow morning. and then by tomorrow evening, you can see the rain starts to taper. we'll get a little bit of a break saturday if you want to be outside. some of those showers being scattered and light. and then sunday, wet and breezy day with the steadier rain. and then right now, looks like halloween staying dry in between all of these storms. alexis? it's turning out to be a busy start on the roads. we have a traffic alert trying to get out of the central valley. i know that's the toughest spot at this early hour. westbound 580 before north flip road, five vehicles are valinvod in a crash. we have air bags deployed on the vehicles blocking the far left lane. and checking the speeds, we're already down to 14 miles an hour getting close to that. you know what's going to happen next, this is going to merge with typical delays out of tracey on 285. that's a long backup. in the meantime, southbound 880 past whipple road letting to hayward near the dumbarton bridge, the fire department just rolled up on this crash. we have a couple vehicles involve in this one. everyone involved is off on the right-hand shoulder, but best chance is during the north bay throughout most of the morning hours. then we'll transition over as we head to the afternoon and evening hours. you can see more yellows and more oranges starting to roll in during the evening and the overnight hours through tomorrow morning. and then by tomorrow evening, you can see the rain starts to taper. we'll get a little bit of a break saturday if you want to be outside. some of those showers being scattered and light. and then sunday, wet and breezy day with the steadier rain. and then right now, looks like halloween staying dry in between all of
