After months of searching for the suspects, finally multiple people under arrest thanks in large part to dramatic cell phone video of that brutal beating. A judge found 20yearold Michelle Carter guilty of manslaughter today. Three years ago carter texted her 18yearold boyfriend conrad roy, encouraging him to follow through with a plan to commit suicide. The judge ruled its not those texts that made her guilty, but the one she sent when he told her he had gotten out of his truck as it was filled with carbon monoxide. She told him to, quote, get back in. Both karlter and roy suffer from severe depression. Carter will be sentenced in august. Although the judge in bill cosby Sexual Assault trial is really frustrated with the jury, hes going to give them all the time they need to reach a verdict. The panel has so far deliberated more than 45 hours and they still cant come to a decision. This morning they asked the judge to explain the standard of proof in a criminal trial. Pack your patience with you. San jose leaders are celebrating today as the Police Department starts a new academy. A shortage of officers has plagued the city for several years, but now Officials Say the tide has turned. Abc7 News Reporter matt keller has the story from san jose. Its a big deal, a very big deal for us. Reporter San Jose Police chief eddy garcia is celebrating today. A year ago he was dealing with historically low numbers of officers on the street, low morale and a class of 7 recruits. Today 54 recruits, the most in several years. Were not where we want to be yet and we wont rebuild overnight. But make no mistake, we are rising again. And help is on the way. Reporter a lot of help, 107 new officers are currently in the training process. 27 are in the Field Training program. 26 are midway through Academy Class 29, and 54 starting Academy Class 30 today. That will bring the total number of sworn personnel to 983. Well short of the departments authorized level of 1,109 officers. While the new recruits are getting the attention today, the officers who have stuck it out with the department over the past six years have dealt with layoffs and cuts in pay and pension. They are currently working mandatory overtime, 160 tenhour shifts a week. This is not a department that is being made great because we have 54 new recruits. This is a department that was already great. Reporter command staff said they have not lowered the standards to be an officer, but more aggressive recruiting. Gone are the day where they attracted Law Enforcement talent. They now have to go get them. The issues that caused the department to lose officers have been fixed. Pay, pension and other benefits are back to being competitive with other departments. Now is the time to rebuild. Anybody who has been, you know, in a boat thats taken on water is happy the holes are fixed. The only thing they have to do is bail out water and thats what were doing now. Californias Unemployment Rate fell last month to the lowest level in state history. The state Employment DepartmentDepartment Says it added 17,600 jobs in may.
