Police are still investigate but say speed appears to have been a factor. A shelter in place order has been lifted after a bomb scare this morning in San Francisco. This all began around noon at the Tenderloin Police station on eddy street. Abc7 News ReporterWayne Freedman is live at the station. Wayne, you said this all began with good intentions . Reporter it did start out with good intentions. A caretaker in an apartment is going through a closet, he finds two artillery shells. He says, i wonder if theyre live. So, he brings them to the Police Station and that is how it all began. It was about 2 feet long, about maybe 4 inches in diameter. Reporter in fact, there were two artillery shells that looked very much like this. What had been a normal day in the Tenderloin Police station at jones and eddy changed quickly when the man who officers describe as a caretaker for an elderly man brought the shells downtown after finding them in an apartment. We left them in his vehicle and came into the station, told us that he had these two rounds in his car seat in front. Police responded by following protocol. They blocked the street and began evacuating four elderly hotels, including the hotel harold home for some 85 mostly nonenglish speaking people. They went door to door, seven floors, with help from the staff. Always very difficult because a lot of the senior disabled building. A lot of the seniors you see are in walkers or wheelchairs or Something Like that. So, a challenge. We were able to complee the challenge. Reporter one at a time, members of the San Francisco police and Fire Departments helped those residents on jones street to a safety zone behind police tape. By then the bomb skad arrived and took the device away. We still dont know if it was live or not, but police say if you find something similar, leave it alone. They will come to you. Sara krueger and ryan warner were tried separately for the first degree murder and assault of kruegers daughter kaylee slusher. Reporter it has been a miraculous recovery for Benjamin Tessa who was shot in the head halloween night 2012. His brain wound was so severe, doctors only gave him a 25 chance of living. He was in a medically induced coma for a month. Today he still has problems with his cognitive functions, but otherwise hes doing well. The shooter, a father of a 4yearold, he and Three Friends left a Halloween Party at fort mason when they encountered lee. They say lee groped his girlfriend. The friends say that led to an altercation where lee grabbed a gun from his car and fired it, emptying the magazine. One of the rounds hit pessa. Lees Attorney Says his client was simply trying to protect himself against the group charging at him, hurling racial insults. He was acting in selfdefense against a hate crime assault. Reporter last april a trial ended with the a jury acquitting lee of most of the attempted murder charges, but they hung on the attempted murder and assault with a firearm charge related to pessa. Then two weeks ago the judge released saelee while he awaits a new trial on the deadlock charges. Spokesman bastian. It was brain matter on the pavement as a result of the gunshot wound, and we were completely opposed to this release. Reporter even though hes on a gps monitoring device and other court order conditions, his release angered pessa and his friends. He spent 4 1 2 years locked away while i spent 4 1 2 years in an institution bettering myself and every day trying to like improve myself because of the unfortunate circumstances that have happened to me. Police say an oregon and california are investigating a reported kidnapping of a san jose state student just hours before her graduation. The 22yearold woman was found by county sheriffs deputies friday night near banddon, 95 miles from california. She was forced to drive north until the car ran out of gas. At that point she escaped. She was found running along an oregon road side. And she hid in tall grass next to we have a lot of grass next to the ocean. She was able to hide at an old lumber mill site, and he did not locate her. The woman says the kidnapper hit her. She was taken to a hospital then treated for facial injuries.
