agencies, fremont and brisbane, showed up. they asked us to move back because they said this was going to be an active crime scene. >> search warrant. >> reporter: with those commands, police entered the home. 57-year-old wife and mother shelly has been missing, her husband carl dreported her disappearance. pd said paul told investigators shelly left her cell phone and laptop at home and she had a history of bipolar disorder and depression. today, those missing signs were covered by crime scene tape. after serving the search warrant at the home, investigators spent much of their time out back. they swabbed this white vehicle, which is registered to the husband, paul. the police department's connection to a missing person case began sunday night. 30 miles from brisbane, fishermen found a woman's torso. tuesday night, investigators searched for additional body parts, picking up more remains around 8:00 last night. sources say a woman's extremity. then reports of a bay bridge jumper. the victim was identified through fingerprints as shelly's husband. neighbors were unaware of the developments as police investigated. >> paul was kind of broke down about it. >> reporter: as for the human remains found 30 miles from here -- >> i don't know what to say on that. i hope it's not her. >> reporter: dna evidence will likely be used to make that determination. and that neighbor you just heard from said he never heard the couple fighting, but other neighbors said shelly's husband moved out for a time and when he moved back into the home, there was tension between the couple and often fighting. coming up tonight new at 5:00, hear from someone who is especially close with shelly. melanie woodrow, "abc7 news." we go to breaking news in alame alameda. this is happening in the 2400 block of mariner square. lyanne melendez is there with the story. >> reporter: a small army of first responders were here -- got here just about after 12:00 this afternoon. now, one woman, an inspector for the u.s. customs and border protection, opened an envelope with something suspicious. she says that it was some kind of powdery substance. she apparently thought nothing of it, and continued with her work. then suddenly she started to feel dizzy, nauseous, and this is what hand next according to the alameda fire department. >> shortly after noon, a woman was complaining of dizziness, some eye irritation, and nausea. we responded with one fire company and ambulance. when we got on the scene, our crews evaluated the woman and during questioning, were told that she had opened up a package with -- in the mail, one of the packages appeared to have a white powder substance. at that point, our cruise felt it would be appropriate to expand the incident based on that information to a hazardous materials response. >> reporter: now, here is the problem. haz/mat crews have gone into that balding to try to find the suspicious envelope and have not been able to locate it. again, the envelope. now, the woman says again that she had the envelope in her hand, put it to one side and apparently lost it. that's why they can't find it. now, the building has been evacuated. 20 workers quarantined. three employees apparently sick, again, nauseous, dizziness and that woman taken to the hospital. apparently, this is either nothing and they are being e extremely cautious or this is very serious. >> leeann, thank you so much. former senator today admitted to taking thousands in bribes. as part of the case, three others also received sentences today. a union city man arrested after crashing a chevy corvette during a test drive and killing the car salesman was released on bail today. 28-year-old alex dimitro was on drugs when he crashed the tree yesterday in oxnard in san bernardino county. that killed 43-year-old warren smale. those who knew him are devastated. >> i'm shocked and i just feel so bad. i wish there was something i could do for them. >> co-workers have created a memorial at the crash site, paying tribute to him. this afternoon, we're hearing directly from the two people heading into an epic battle between the fbi and apple. >> tim cook gave an interview to david muir from abc. kristen sze is here with more. >> reporter: david muir did sit down with tim cook in cupertino this morning where cook broke his silence for the first time since a judge ordered the tech giant to hack into the iphone of the san bernardino mass shooter syed farook. today, the attorney general told the house panel encryption represents a very real threat to law enforcement's mission. but apple's ceo tells david says it has a responsibility to protect people's data. >> i believe we are making the right choice. >> in your quiet moments, do you have any concern that you might be able to prevent a terrorist attack? >> david, some things are hard and some things are right. and some things are both. this is one of those things. >> reporter: i caught up with david this afternoon in san francisco. he told me while there's no perfect emoji for tim cook's feelings, the closest may be anger. normally when we think of tim cook, we think of mild mannered. is he fired up over this? >> i know. >> we continue our march towards spring or our march towards march. here's a look at doppler 7 hd. warm weather across the guantanamo bay. probably going to be warmer tomorrow. but while the weather is calm, the seas are not. wave heights are pretty high and there's the danger, the possibility of a dangerous breaker up to 20 feet, possibly dangerous sneaker waves. here is how it looks up on the roof. clear skies, 63 here in san francisco. mountain view, 69. san jose, 75 right now. morgan hill, a cool 59. cool by comparison that is. 72 degrees right now in santa rosa. 70 in navaro. concord at 70 degrees. here's how it looks looking out on the bay and a view of ocean beach there. this is our first forecast. mainly clear skies again this evening. maybe a few high clouds passing by. bright sunshine tomorrow morning. tomorrow afternoon, look for sunny skies and highs ranging from mid to upper 60s at the coast to mid and upper 70s inland and near the bay. a cooldown is coming and possibly some rain. i'll show you when in the forecast. >> thank you, spencer. police believe a teenage gang may be responsible for a series of armed robberies. three suspects, all teenagers, have been arrested. the most recent happened at the stone ridge parking lot in pleasanton over the weekend. this is video of that mall. a 63-year-old woman and 17-year-old girl were robbed. after hearing about the incident, the police chief said it sounded similar to an incident at the b.a.r.t. station parking lot sunday. >> i thought it was very similar and trying to put the pieces together, i called the pleasanton police department and wanted to make sure they were aware of what happened tat b.a.r.t. station and they were. >> another woman was also robbed of her belongings. a city worker went tent by tent to remind homeless people they need to remind out by friday. the city posted the notice yesterday as a warning for people that there is a remove by force. despite this warning, not everybody is leaving willingly. >> i'm not going to move. >> hell no, i want go. how's that? hell no, i want go. >> they'll have to take you out? >> they can't kick me out. >> the city is asking those now living in temperatue ing iing i temporary homeless shelter, but advocates say it's not big enough to house all the homeless. still ahead on "abc7 news" at 4:00, a state trooper's big surprise moment after he pulled over the driver of this big rig. this could have been a disaster. and down south, tornadoes leave behind death and destruction and the trouble may not be over yet. and is lighter better? new at 4:30, the innovations the army is looking into to protect soldiers on the front lines. and our first live look at the afternoon commute. that's not 101, that would be the bay bridge right now as traffic is coming into the city here. there is 101 and the usual south bound backup, that is all jammed up. [ bleep ] look out. a minnesota state trooper reacting to the collision between a semi truck and a freight train. this is video captured on his dash cam. the trooper had just finished inspecting the truck. the 67-year-old driver then took off and for whatever reason ignored the flashing lights and drove straight onto the tracks. the train dragged the big rig a quarter of a mile before stopping. amazingly the driver only had minor injuries. the deadly storms that slammed the south are heading into the east and midwest regions. this is a look at damage in pensacola, florida, where about 100 homes and apartments have been damaged. at least six people were killed after more than two dozen tornadoes landed. >> look up, look up. >> reporter: a monster storm system is on the move up the east coast. >> holy cow! >> reporter: along the way, leaving a path of destruction. in this rv park in louisiana -- >> i just took off running to help people. >> reporter: and entire neighborhoods in pensacola, florida decimated. all this the work of 27 reported tornadoes in 24 hours across five states. >> sounded like a train that was coming through here. >> reporter: people here in prairieville were here when a tornado ripped the walls out. >> definitely a scary situation. >> reporter: amazingly, no one was seriously hurt here. but elsewhere, the wind and rain flipped this tractor trailer over and with dozens injured, the search is continuing for anyone who may still be trapped in the mess of debris. >> we were hoping to get down into the piles and try to find people. >> reporter: forecasters say from florida to maryland, they could be hit with damaging winds and hail this afternoon. then from d.c. to where we are here in new york, we are being told to brace for heavy rain and flooding later tonight. million from mall operators and the first time investor united parcel service. they're competing with other delivery services shipping. macy's is planning to put its backstage stores into 15 existing retail locations this year. the stores will sell macy's brands at discounted prices. this comes as macy's announced it was closing 40 stores because of struggling sales. responsibility. reports out of washington say president obama is vetting nevada governor brian sandoval as a possible voter nominee. he's a moderate republican elected in 2010. before that, he served as a u.s. district court judge, nominated by president bush and approved unanimously by the senate. a sandoval nomination could test the republican's vow to block any obama nomination. the u.s. army expects to roll out a new lighter body armor system in 2019. officials say it will provide at least as much protection as today's system but with greater flexibility. new vests are being tested are 26% lighter than some older models. 23 pounds compared to 31. soldier feedback so far, 95% positive. johnson&johnson will appeal a verdict that could be financially devastating to the company. a jury friday. dry on saturday and 20% of light rain on sunday. that appears it will be confined mainly to the north bay. next week, although we expect another warmup, we also see just slight chances of to be bad, this is rotten. a report includes documents and e-mails reporting findings that takada altered data that uncovered significant quality and safety issues. the report from the senate committee on science commerce and transportation discussed the false data in an internal 2010 document. investigators say the manipulation happened even after recalls and fatalities in 2008 and 2009. a takada spokesman says the findings are inexcusable and will not be tolerated. the federal aviation administration is taking a big step towards making drones more a part of your daily life. right was my hope after the end of the season. i wasn't necessarily thinking what night or what show, but i wanted to be there from beginning to end. >> reporter: she's been visiting catches throughout arizona and the reception has been mixed. >> to me, the more educated and i think generationally, a lot of the players have been amazing with understanding. she played, i played, what is the
