whatever they can to help by cutting back on their water use. abc 7 news reporter chris nguyen live with a program that can help customers save some money, chris? >> reporter: hi, larry. at times like these you can put a request for a water auditor and here in the south bay, one program is so popular residents have to wait nearly six weeks for a visit. at the alamitos groundwater recharge pond this sign that says no swimming but a glance at the pond itself shows no need for the reminder. there is no time to waste and people need to do what they can right away. santa clara county residents have been asked to cut their water use by 30% to help with that, the water district is offering a free program called the water wise house call. technicians will come to your home assess your water usage and give you a customized plan to help you save money and water. replacing shower heads to measuring faucet flow rate, the program is so popular people are waiting weeks for an auditor to get out to their homes. we wish we could get to everybody and we're staffing up and we're trying to increase the number of people that have to take house calls and it will take time to meet the demand that we're suddenly seeing. many are taking matters into their own hands at the san jose mission home of the lds church, these missionaries spent the day sprucing up the yard. >> our goal was to do it and to campus. a contractor accidentally cut a power line on a power substation late this morning. more than 30 buildings were affected for up to two and a half hours. right now campus workers are going building to building to make sure everybody is operating as it should. >> a cupertino teenager is back home this afternoon and 17-year-old connor sullivan returned last night after going missing four days ago. sullivan told authorities he left monty vista high school by choice after first period. it was a spontaneous decision. sullivan says he spent the entire time walking around and slept under the bleachers at his school. he was eating fruit off of nearby trees and drinking from a water fountain. today the sullivan family issued a written statement thanking authorities and volunteers for helping with the search. the sullivans said their son regrets what he did and his actions impact the others around him and understands there is no excuse for the concern and worry he caused and they're helping their son deal with what has happened. >> they kept a close eye at an antioch elementary school upon. a child was lured for the second time in a week. >> drop-off was crowded this morning at bellshaw elementary school in antioch. moms told us there were more parents here than usual keeping a closer eye on their kids and now that word has spread of a stranger trying to lure a child into his truck. >> all of us moms called each other. do you know who it was? >> reporter: the school district also increased security on campus and we have the security team and you probably can't even see them. >> antioch police said a man driving a red pickup tried to convince a fifth grade boy to get into the truck yesterday morning around 8:45. he later reported it to school officials and antioch police got called around 1:00 p.m. and investigators say they're looking, but haven't found the man. it's disturbing and it is the times that we live in, all around southern california and besides teaching students, we have to teach them about social life and what's going on. and encouraging them to talk to their kids about stranger danger. and the only thing i can do is teach my children what to do any i would never assume that something bad couldn't happen to them. kelly holland says she, too, has covered the topic thoroughly. she knows not to go anywhere with anybody and i can count on one hand how many times he's been out of my husband's sight. nothing will happen. >> reporter: they're canvassing the neighborhood around the school looking for him and also checking to see if there are surveillance cameras that might have want captured an image of him. amy hollyfield abc 7. pier was one arrested during a prostitution sting by oakland police. ingram was cal football's recruiting coordinator and he was with the team for six years. ingram will no longer represent or act on behalf of the university in any capacity. a brief scare today at arroyo high school in san lorenzo. sky 7 hd was overhead as students and staff members were evacuated after a report of smoke in the boy's locker room. fire crews arrived on the scene quickly and turns out a pump had overheated that cause a small electrical fire and they dealt with it quickly and classes resumed several minutes later. investigators are investigateing a bomb threat on the statue of liberty that forced the evacuation of hundreds of have saidors. someone called 911 and said they were going to blow up the statue. explosives rescue rushed to liberty island and hundreds of visitors were evacuated safely by boat. >> a crane accident left one person dead today in new york city. authorities say the crane fell off a truck trapping a worker underneath. the 40-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. it happened at the site of a hotel that's under construction in midtown manhattan and an investigation into what caused the crane to fall is under way and early indications point to mechanical failure. a published report says caltrans knew the eastern span of the bay bridge was leaking rain water more than a year before the bridge opened and according to the san francisco chronicle, caltrans was aware that the supposedly watertight steel support structure leaked as early as 2012. cal trans was also warned that the water might cause corrosion. cal trans did not acknowledge the leaks until january of 2014, but documents show agency engineers first noticed this problem two years earlier when water entered this span through small gaps. >> san francisco drivers may want to avoid vanes in avenue and it is closed between post street through sunday at 11:59 p.m. construction crews are building an underground pedestrian tunnel with a hospital that's under construction and the offices that will be built across the street. this is the second of three planned closures. >> changes are coming to san francisco's muni service starting tomorrow. abc 7 news was theres and the and it will get cloudier and wetter. here's live doppler 7 hd and it is up in the northwestern part of the state and rain showers and beginning to move into the fort bragg area and it will get showers late tonight and early tomorrow morning and it doesn't appear that way from this view looking from the east bay camera and we'll see just a few clouds around and it's 58 degrees in san francisco and 61 a piece and oakland and san carlos, but 65 and 66 morgan hill and 67 at half moon bay. here's the view from the tower looking at san francisco and we have other current readings for you and 66 in santa rosa and petaluma, 59 and 67 in fairfield and mid-60s at concord and livermore and looking at the skyline from our exploratorium camera under mainly blue skies and showers will continue early into tomorrow morning or i should say into early tomorrow morning and we'll have partial clearing by late morning to midday and sunny and warmer weather begins on sunday. the satellite image shows the approaching frontal system that will bring us our late night and overnight showers sweeping through through the overnight hours and 7:00 this evening and it will be cloudy then with a little bit of light shower activity in the northernmost part of the viewing area. by 9:00 tonight we'll see a more widespread area of showers in the north bay and by 11:00 p.m. and more widespread across the entire bay area and look for showers over the east bay and the south bay and the santa cruz mountains and winding down and the front will screen through by 5:00 a.m. and so much of the remainder of the morning and the remainder of the day tomorrow will be dry after those early morning showers. some clouds may linger and we'll see breaks of sun as well. rainfall projections are these up to .1 of an inch and perhaps up to 4500 at livermore. over in the sierra winter weather advisory is in effect until 5:00 tomorrow afternoon and above 5500 feet and maybe a foot or more up at donner and up in the bay area tonight and we'll see showers moving through it and overnight lows will be in the 50s and tomorrow's highs will be partial clearing in the afternoon and only in the mid-60s for most inland areas and only mid to upper 50s on the coast and here's the accuweather seven-day forecast and look at the warm weather next week. every day next week and high temperatures will be in the low or low they propromote the practice as being health pep they suggested indoor tanning could increase vitamin d production and reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. the tanning salons did not comment on the lawsuit filed by the new york attorney general's office. extreme morning sickness could be linked to children's neurological problems. a study at the university of southern california found that children born to women who suffered severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy were more likely to have attention and sensory disorders. researchers couldn't say exactly why that was. >> a popular pesticide could hurt wild bees and the common insecticide could be contributing to the decline of the bee population which is a key issue in food security. this new research could lead to bans on certain pesticides in the u.s. and europe. it is an important meal for cultivating good health and ranking as perhaps the most critical meal for 50 and 60-something eaters particularly when it wayne? >> reporter: this is a big event, but it's been going on all day. armenians around the world will say this event, this day, this commemoration has been a century in the making. april 24th has worldly wisdom paid for with a nation and culture's pain. in san francisco, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. right now police in the los angeles area are looking for a man accused of robbing an armored truck guard. police say he attacked the guard in inglewood this morning while he unloaded money at an atm at a bank. the man and guard got into a shootout and witnesses heard up to ten gunshots, but no one was hurt. the robber ran away with a bag filled with a large amount of cash. >> the former oakland police chief says he will not step down from his new job in baltimore and there's anger and frustration directed at baltimore and the commissioner is handling the freddy gray case. protesters are promising a rally that will shut down the city tomorrow. gray died while in police custody and the mayor revealed he was handcuffed and put in leg irons while in the back of a police van but was not wearing a seat belt which is police policy. some in the community are calling for bats to resign. >> reverend quinn of minister alliance has called for my resignation. that's not going to happen. >> he resigned as oakland's police chief in 2011 after a controversy over police department reforms. he also had a strained relationship with former mayor gene kwan. an attack inside the vatican was never carried out. today italian police revealed a plot against the pope and some suspects arrested for setting up a terror network. abc news reporty marcy gonzalez shows us the raid that broke it up. >> reporter: a major terror raid in italy. police taking down a network of accused militants including two of osama bin laden's former bodyguards investigators believe plotted to attack the vatican. italian police now reveals that in 2010 while investigating the men's alleged involvement of a bombing in pakistan that killed more than a hundred people they learned of a new plot. the target, they say people visiting an unspecified crowded area in rome which antiterrorism believe may have been the vatican. >> translator: from some wiretapped conversation it comes out that an organization of a terrorist attack is under way. >> reporter: investigators say those recorded phone conversations that took place near the seed of the catholic church included mention of restricted areas and the pope. italian police saying today that at least one pakistani suicide bomber arrived in rome but they explained the plot was called off once the suspects learned they were being investigated. >> the vatican probably always is a target if you're particularly an islamic extremist group what better target than to go after the head of the catholic church? >> reporter: the vatican spokesperson down played the threat though, reportedly saying the plot was a hypothesis and there was no reason for concern. nine men were taken into custody in this raid and police say they have arrest warrants for nine other suspects believed to be involved in this terror network. marcy gonzalez abc news, new york. an investigation is under way to determine why a stage collapsed during a musical performance at a high school in indiana. [ screaming ] >> so scary. the stage at westfield high suddenly gave way last night sending students into the orchestra pit below. no one was seriously injured and most of the students who went to the hospital have been released already. students on stage and in the audience rushed to help pulling people from the orchestra pit. >> we really came together in this moment and worked as one unit to basically help everybody out and try and get everybody safe. >> i knew that nothing of that nature was supposed to happen and then you just hear a huge crash and you know that it's not supposed to happen so you know something is wrong. >> westfield students returned to class today. in washington, d.c., eric holder has left the department of justice building. [ applause ] a large crowd of admirers cheered the attorney general as he gave a farewell speech. holder said he's going to miss everyone. as a last act he tossed two freeric holder wristbands into the crowd saying quote, it's official, now we can say eric holder is free. he spent six years as attorney general and it took months for his successor to be confirmed. loretta lynch will take his place monday. 7 on your side's michael feeney teaming up with consumer reports and asking just how safe is the shrimp that you eat? >> the first in the world. >> coming up on abc 7 news at 6:00, dan ashley talks with dr. marcy bowers about her transition, her work and why there is a two-year waiting list for her services. >> interesting. >> yes. turning to consumer news now. shrimp is more popular than ever and what exactly are you eating with that seafood dinner. 7 on your side's michael finney is partnering with consumer reports for the latest on shrimp safety. >> this is the good idea to do this. >> consumer reports found some with potentially harmful bacteria and illegal antibiotic residue. the shrimp was purchased from 27 cities across the nation. >> shrimp americans eat an average of almost four pounds a year making shrimp more popular than tuna. today about 94% of the u.s. shrimp supply is imported and the majority of it is far. >> it can be done responsibly, but bacteria and disease can thrive. antibiotics may seem like effects, but we don't think so and they're illegal for use in imported shrimp. >> reporter: consumer reports tested to find out how safe our shrimp is. scientists analyzed 342 packages of frozen shrimp both farmed and wild, raw and cooked. overall 60% of the raw shrimp samples tested positive for bacteria, so safe preparation is very important and 11 samples or about 5% of imported farm shrimp had antibiotic residues. the antibiotic use is particularly troubling because it's illegal. it promotes antibiotic resistance and it just isn't a responsible way of farming. >> consumer reports recommends responsibly sourced wild shrimp like those rex mended by seafood lodge or certified by the marine stewardship counsel. if farmed shrimp is better for your budget look for farmed shrimp by the aquatic council or whole foods market responsibly farmed. knowing what to look for will help you make choices that are better for you and the environment. >> the food and drug administration is responsible for inspecting shrimp coming into the united states to make sure it doesn't contain any drugs or chemicals that aren't permitted and consumer reports is urging the fda to step up its inspectioning. >> thank you michael. >> fans of the hit abc show "gray's anatomy" are literally in warning. a spoiler warning for anyone who has not watched the latest shocking episode, and maybe they dvred it. dr. mcdreamy saved hundreds of lives during his 11-year tenure at seattle gray's hospital but in the end nothing could save him. he died from injuries suffered in a sudden car accident. >> you're too late. >> no. ♪ if i lay here ♪ ♪ >> people took to social media to express their shock. one person tweeted r.i.p. mcdreamy. this is the worst day of my life! actor patrick dempsey says the death of his character was a real shock to him as well because dempsey is under contract with the show for one more year. >> maybe flashbacks? >> that's what i'm thinking. protective fathers out there may want to take? pointers from this dad. take a look. here comes the t-shirt that he made his daughter wear. it says stay clear, boys. this is my dad and it has a picture of dad and coming up we may have a shot of him shirtless. the picture of him on the shirt is the dad shirtless. you don't want to mess with that, i don't think. he is very fit. the photo is getting a lot of attention online and people who commented have disagreed a lot about this, but one thing they can agree on that the dad is attracting plenty of suitors from that shirt. >> xl. >> abc 7 news at 4:00 continues. the airport action from this man that now has him being hailed as a hero. >> here's dan with what's coming up on abc 7 news at 5 locke. >> larry and am a thanks very much. a bay area woman is charged with public intoxication and it's what happened after she left this area that has her new suing bart. we'll explain why. >> also ahead the tough choices facing california farmers these days. those stories and a lot more . a south bay business owner is being hailed a hero for saving the life of an airline passenger having a heart attack. it happened at a gate at mineta san jose international. >> david louie says this is the fourth time this good samaritan has responded to a heart attack victim. >> reporter: it happened to a 76-year-old passenger last sunday. fortunately, mike vanban was nearby. >> it's a very rewarding and yet surreal experience. >> reporter: the lossals to businessman heard his wife veeming and he started doing cpr and chest compressions as shown in this american heart association video. two other passengers two of them nurses stepped in they had an automated defibrillator. the airport has 47 of them located across the terminals. it took three shocks to get the man's heartbeating again. >> the machine will let you know if you need to press the shock button. it's intuitive enough to know the cardiac activity and the electrical activity inside this person, if it senses that a shock is necessary this machine will deliver that shock. by the time i left to jump on to my plane he was breathing without oxygen so he was, you know, the color returned to the his face and breathing on his own and they packaged him up and got him to the hospital. >> his family is declining interviews. mike vanman spoke to him by phone. he was very appreciative and he was very thankful and just -- and the strength in his voice was there. i mean, he was -- he was feeling good and he was eating and happy to be with his wife so that was really gratifying. >> vanman hopes his experience will prompt others to take cpr classes. in san jose david louie, abc 7 news. >> amazing. thanks for joining us for abc 7 news at 4:00. i'm ama daetz. >> i'm larry beil and abc 7 news begins with cheryl and dan. [ screaming ] >> a woman arrested for public intoxication is now suing bart for excessive force. >> he used some kind of hold against me and took me down. >> it's a story you'll see only on abc 7 news. four times in the back and once in the back of the head. >> a family says san francisco police killed their son and what they're doing to try to get a measure of justice. >> i'm abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel, and we'll tell you how it will impact your weekend plans. live from the kgo broadcast center this is abc 7 news. don't touch me like that! you just saw five seconds that changed the life of a bay area woman. she says a bart police officer got out of hand during an arrest. >> i don't know why he did it. i don't know why he broke four bones in my face. >> good evening, thanks for joining us. i'm cheryl jennings. >> i'm dan ashley. a bartender who also works as a model is suing bart and oakland police charging that their officers used excessive force while she was being booked in jail and she ended up with bruises on her face. vic lee is in the newsroom with the story you will see only on abc 7 news. vic? >> dan bart officials and oakland police say they can't comment on this case since it's in litigation, but here's the lawsuit. abc 7 news also viewed hours of security camera and released body camera videos. sheehan says those tapes conflict with what the police report says. >> this is what megan sheehan looked like march 18th of last year the morning after st. patrick's day. the bartender and model suffered serious injuries when bart and oakland police officers took her down. >> i don't believe that they should have, you know broken four bones in my face and knocked out some of my teeth. >> reporter: sheehan ended up at the lake merit bart station after a heavy night of drinking and she's embarrassed of how drunk she got, but her crime, she says, does not fit the punishment. >> i should never have gotten that drunk, but also there are ways to detain someone and not break their face. [ screaming ] >> a bart rf arrested sheehan who admitted she -- >> you see sheehan in the upper right hand corner of the video and the bart officer standing with her and suddenly some kind of altercation starts and she's thrown to the ground. the jail security camera video shows it happened
