Reporter well, larry as you said, this is the fifth consecutive day of that declaration from the air quality district. Not only cant we use our fireplaces, but you know, its become sort of unhealthy. Heres the problem that were facing, okay . You see the few strands of hair on my head . They are absolutely still. Theyre not blowing. We need that wind. Thick, thick haze hanging around the area like a dirty blanket. Obscuring sutro tower and the hills of San Francisco. On a normal day you can see oakland. Not lately. Not today. We see particulate matter which is the pollutant were worried about building up when we have stagnant air like we have right now throughout the entire bay area. Reporter the bay area air Quality Management district is using equipment like this to test the air and even infrared cameras to detect things you cant see with a human eye. Like those microscopic particles about 1 25 the size of a human hair. Particles that can lodge deep in your lungs. Dangerous pollutants to children, the elderly, people who work and play outside and many others. Anyone who has a respiratory condition like asthma copd, anything like that, or right now, the common cold. Reporter its been the fifth consecutive day of foul air and people are starting to take notice. We breathe and we want to breathe as clean as possible, right . So we can have better health. I have been taking photos all day of the city and you can barely see berkeley from the golden gate bridge. Pretty bad. Reporter amber moved to idaho six months ago. I came back i was extremely surprised by the cloud of pollution you can see coming into the area. Its pretty thick pretty heavy and definitely on the choking side. Hundreds gathered today to break ground on a project that promises to make getting from Southern California to Northern California faster than ever before. The ceremony in fresno marked the beginning of the high speed rail project. Governor jerry brown addressed the crowd talking about its benefits. He wants half of the States Energy production to be renewable by the year 2030. The governor said the 100 Renewable Energy rail system is critical to reaching that goal plus ridership will have other perks. Theres an amenity theres an efficiency theres a sustainability on the type of fuel. Then you can have a martini or whatever you people drink. At 200 miles an hour. There is opposition to this project. Many republicans are unhappy with the 68 billion price tag and farmers in the Central Valley dont want the train crossing through their fields. Eventually californias high speed rail project should end at the transbay terminal in San Francisco. Work there is already well under way. Abc 7 News Reporter Carolyn Tyler live in the city. Reporter well, the gates are closed right now but we will take you inside to see whats going on. Architects call this the Grand Central station of the west. The 1. 9 billion transbay project. What theyre working on is part of our train box. Reporter we got a look at the progress being made on San Franciscos Transbay Transit Center. Work has been under way since the 2010 demolition of the old terminal. The new project is transforming four blocks south of market into a hub for the entire region. There is 11 different transit agencies from the east bay north bay up and down the peninsula. All the buses that come through the city will come through the transit center. On top of that, ultimately when phase two is built, cal train and high speed rail. Reporter the vision for the 68 billion rail line is to zip passengers between los angeles and San Francisco in three hours, with bay area stations including gilroy, san jose, millbrae and ending at San Franciscos new center. The ongoing construction here fascinates the south of market lunchtime crowd. They have been constructing for a long time now. Im very very excited to see it finished when it opens. Reporter the Transbay Transit Center is designed for 100,000 square feet of retail shops. The centerpiece will be a huge glass column and on top of the center, a 5. 4 acre public park. The project has created about 8400 jobs nationwide so far. About half of them here in the bay area. 18yearold derek turner is an apprentice carpenter from the redding area, proud to work on a landmark project. Thats one of the big reasons why i did it, is because were building america. This is the biggest job ever in San Francisco, so im definitely honored to be part of it. Reporter the construction manager says theyre on track to open for bus operations in late 2017. In San Francisco, Carolyn Tyler, abc 7 news. A hayward man tried to beat a train across the tracks this morning. Hes lucky he was able to drive away after the amtrak train hit the back of his car. Sky 7 hd captured the scene after the accident. Hayward firefighters say the man drove around the crossing arm that dropped to warn the train was approaching. At first the Fire Department couldnt find the car that was hit but they found it on pacific street. Train service was delayed by an hour and a half. The driver has been cited and his license suspended. Arson investigators in San Francisco are still trying to find the person who set a fire outside a popular tourist attraction known as the mrs. Doubtfire house. Its a story abc 7 news broke at 11 00 last night. Abc 7 News Reporter Amy Hollyfield has an update on the investigation. Reporter this house may be occupied by a man who has his own personal life, but to the world, this is the mrs. Doubtfire home and its part of the San Francisco sightseeing experience. It impacted our lives, really. I had to come see it. Reporter but today there was Something Else to see. Burn marks on the garage door and the front door. Someone poured gasoline on the home last night and set it on fire. Police say it had nothing to do with the movie but the movies fans are horrified. I dont believe that. You dont do Something Like that. Its disgusting. Reporter the homeowner is a doctor who specializes in facial feminization surgery. He told police he had an issue with an former patient. Police are looking into whether that person is responsible for the fire. The homeowner put the fire out. No one was hurt. It would be a personal issue but it happened to a house that the public feels connected to especially after Robin Williams death. This is what it looked like in august as it turned into a memorial for the actor. People in the neighborhood say they still feel sad and this arson just brings their emotions to the surface again. Who would do something that cruel . To his family, especially. This is just devastating to all of us. Reporter police have been protecting this crime scene even from picture takers as they try to figure out who did this and why. The homeowner at this point has had no comment. Mountain view police are asking for the publics help trying to catch a peeper who recorded cell phone video of people through apartment windows. They are investigating two such incidents. The first one happened back in october. The victim at an apartment complex on california street saw the flashing red light of a camera through her window while she was in the bathroom. The second incident was on new years day. Still ahead on abc 7 news at 4 00, a bay area native gets the call from cooperstown. The Hometown Pride for Randy Johnson on this historic day for the major league pitcher. And sony with a blast from the past. This is not your dads walkman. What makes this one stand out. Stay with us. East bay native Randy Johnson, the big unit, has received his call from cooperstown. He is now an official member of the Baseball Hall of fame. Johnson played 22 years in the majors. Most notably with the mariners and diamondbacks and one season with the giants. He won five cy young awards. He is among only 24 pitchers to win 300 games, achieving that milestone with the giants in 2009. Johnson graduated from livermore high back in 1982 and people in that east bay city could not be prouder this afternoon. Abc 7 News Reporter chris winn has the story and more live from livermore. Reporter it has been decades since Randy Johnson called livermore his home but as youre about to see here at Livermore High School he still holds a special place in the hearts and minds of many. Nestled in the hills of livermore, Steve Gallagher talks about his baseball career with great fondness. I heard the radar guns behind me and would hear 91 90, you know, 89, 92. And you know, it made for concentrating on the game a challenge for the catchers. Reporter make that catcher, Steve Gallagher and his pitcher the one and only Randy Johnson. They graduated together from Livermore High School back in 1982. Never thought we would be looking at somebody that went to the bigs and then went on to be inducted into the hall. Reporter down at the high school this afternoon, word of johnsons vote into the Baseball Hall of fame spread fast. He last visited back in 2009 during his final season with the giants. Varsity coach david parrotti said the kids werent surprised by the announcement. They definitely know the name and know the kinds of success he had and they connected to being here at livermore. Kind of cool for them to do that. Reporter this senior is one of those students. Its just an inspiration, just the fact that he came from almost like nothing and then made it all the way to the top, one of the best pitchers and kind of just a reminder. Reporter a reminder that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. But for johnsons old teammate, a personal point of pride. It says a lot for randy and its nice that the hometown kid did good. Reporter in livermore, chris winn, abc 7 news. The search is over for a missing richmond teenager who vanished after leaving her home on new years day. Richmond police say the 16yearold Belinda Jean Carson was found in San Francisco last night. She is talking to investigators about what happened. No word on her condition. Police say carson has no history of being a runaway and may have been with a man who was refusing to allow her to go home. The manhattan man accused of killing his Hedge Fund Manager father is now being held without bail. He showed no emotion in Court Last Night when he pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. Thomas gilbert senior was found dead by his wife sunday with a single gunshot wound to the head. Police say the crime scene was staged intended to look like a suicide. Reports say the father and son had argued over a decrease in the 30yearolds allowance. Gilbert jr. Has had previous runins with the law. He is reportedly the prime suspect in an arson case that destroyed a South Hampton home back in september. In health news this afternoon, a nationwide study has good news for women undergoing test tube fertility procedures. Researchers say 12 years of data shows complications, including deaths are uncommon from procedures that include in vitro fertilization. The most common problems are related to drugs used to stimulate ovaries in preparation for ivf. Overstimulation is a risk and it occurred in 154 out of every 10,000 pregnancy attempts studied. The study is the first large scale effort to quantify risk for u. S. Patients undergoing these treatments. Startling new numbers from the cdc when it comes to alcohol poisoning. The agency says six people die every day due to too much drinking. The victims, mostly middleaged men, not teens or college kids. The cdc admits researchers thought the victims would be younger. Scientists at Oxford University have started the first human trial of a new ebola vaccine. They hope to vaccinate 72 healthy adults by the end of the month. The vaccine will be given in two injections. The first dose is designed to stimulate the immune system and the second is aimed at enhancing immune response over time. Apple is making changes when it comes to buying iphones. Consumers can now buy iphone 6 and iphone 6 plus smart phones without having to sign up for a twoyear Service Contract along with the phone. Im sold. It looks way less bulky. The device can access apps through google play but its not meant to compete with your smart phone. The new walkman costs 1200. Whoa yeah. Quite steep. We have clear skies sunny all across the bay area, and hazy right now. High temperatures so far, well, we had highs well into the 60s across much of the bay area and two immediate San Francisco bay area locations broke the 70 degree mark, both coastal locations. Half moon bay, 72. Santa cruz 73. Farther south down into the salinas area high temperatures in the mid and upper 70s in some places. Heres a live view this is sfo showing the haze over the airport area there. These are the forecast features. The warming tomorrow so there may be a couple near record highs tomorrow. Air quality remains poor thats the bad news. This dry pattern we have will continue into next week. We see no change in the seven days ahead. Heres the satellite image. You can see the big strong ridge of High Pressure that has been the dominant feature in the weather picture last few days bringing us hazy conditions stagnant air continues and poor air quality continues as well. This dry pattern will continue at least for the next several days as the jet stream as you can see is deflected well to our north, so thats not allowing any rainmaking systems to move directly towards the bay area.
