. >> announcer: live where you live, this is "abc 7 news." ♪ confederate statue toppled. protesters take action as tensions over the violence in virginia boils over and spreads. but first, bracing for protests here at home. one of those demonstrations will happen at this bay area beach. good evening. i'm dan ashley. ama daetz has the night off. thanks for joining us. those demonstrations the weekend after next will take place in two of the bay area's most liberal cities, san francisco and berkley. "abc 7 news" reporter cornell barnard is here. you spoke with the organizer of the san francisco demonstration. >> reporter: i did. and he said his organization is not a hate group. he said he wants to bring the message of unity and freedom but not everyone is a believer. one day after the violence in charlottesville police and protesters clashed in seattle sunday. it happened during a right wing rally orgedizan pro donald trump group, patriot prayer. >> there was like over 1,000 protesters that were so close to the stage, and they were ready to riot. >> reporter: patriot prayers founder jsyoe from vancouver, washington he plans a similar rally on august 26th at krissy field in san francisco. >> talking about bringingthe country together. >> reporter: he wants the rally to be peaceful but predicts counterprotesters can change that. >> people need to be careful because if they say things out of stoking the violence. >> reporter: counterprotests are planned. we found this post which call patriot prayer thugs. he denounced the violence in virginia and he is against hate. >> let's imagine we are a hate group, you can't shut because of that. >> reporter: some say krissy field is the wrong place for the rally. >> instead of being open and discussing things in a forum that's create, they create a forum that's violent and confrontational. >> reporter: representatives from the golden gate national recreation area would not go on camera but said patriot prayer has applied for a first amendment permit for the event which likely will be granted. others say free speech can't be denied. >> we do need some space for people of all stripes to be able to have their opinions. >> reporter: the national park service working with san francisco police on plans for security. a separate right wing event also planned for sunday, the 27th in berkley. a counterprotest also scheduled. cornell barnard, "abc 7 news" thanks a lot. protesters in north carolina made a stand tonight. here's the video. this crowd erupted into cheers as a confederate soldier statue was toppled in durham. the nearly century old monument fell outside a county administration building. you >> >> president the chaos in charlottesville and growing backlash from critics who felt his initial responsid. de tn'>> violence on many sides, m sides. >> reporter: now the president says the department of justice has launched a civil rights investigation. in as we learn new details about the 20-year-old suspect arraigned on murder charges. james alex fields jr., seen here marching among the white supremacists groups. according to police, later rammed his car into a group of counterprotesters, killing heather hire. abc news learning the fbi is investigating to determine if this attack was a hate crime. those who knew fields in the past not surprised by the allegations. >> he felt that whites were superior. >> he proclaimed himself as a nazi and as a white supremacist. >> the police chief in the meantime admits he has regrets about this weekend because three lives were lot, hiers and two troopers killed in a helicopter crash. hiers is now determined to make sure her daughter did not die in firing of software engineer jamto for his memo on diversity, but mountain view officials told "usa today" no one has applied for permits to hold a demonstrate as google. mountain view was among nine cities where google protests were reportedly planned for this saturday officers and cal tranls workers is in custody. investigators say 43-year-old joshua buck brown opened fire on them late this morning in kelseyville. it led to a manhunt that lasted six hours before swat teams found him in his home. he gave up peacefully. no shots fired. investigators say the crew was near his property, closing an illegal road brown bit. >> i assumed it angered him caltrans was coming out to block off the driveway, and it was while they were performing that function that he came out, exchanged words and started shooting. >> brown has a confederate flag hanging hn is officers say they don't believe his actions were racially motivated. new at man to safety from t san francisco bay. they say he went in about 9:00 off embarcadero near rincon park. took about 15 minutes to rescue him. paramedics ced hckhewaims h not injured. he appears to be okay. also new at 11:00, a south bay man who endurld a tragedy a month ago is facing another setback. his wife and son were killed in march and now he may lose the home he shared with his family. here is "abc 7 news" reporter lilian kim. >> we had bone fires out here, we roasted s'mores. it was a place we dreamed of retiring. >> reporter: gary clausen moved into his los gatos farm two years ago, but he may be forced to say good by to a house that holds precious memory of his wife and the county got wind of a rental the counnit on the bottom floor years ago, a loss of income that covers most of the mortgage. >> i would need to sell, i would have to move out and leave the home that my family, that my wife and my son loved. >> reporter: gary lost his wife polly and eight-year-old son trent in a horrific accident during a family visit to kansas in january. the three were playing on a frozen pond when they fell through the thin ice. gary situates what helped him cope was the serenity of his mountain home and the emotional support from his tenants who are now busy packing in case they are to move. >> i think we kind of know the pain he's been through the most. we're right here. and i worry about him being alone. >> reporter: it is unclear how the county learned about the property. usually someone from the public calls in with a tip. if so, gary says he harbors no resentment. he is waiting to hear from the county about what his options are. in the meantime, gary is relying on his faith. >> i know that there will be a future and that i'm ind oo gand. i will be okay. >> reporter: in los gatos, lilian kim, "abc 7 news." more to of tires have been destroyed by nails in concord, and neighbors along san miguel road believe someone is dropping them deliberately. "abc 7 news" reporter katie utehs is live in concord with the story. >> reporter: dan, people we spoke with have spent hundreds of dollars repairing those tires, and they say it is making them go flat broke. this water bottle holds nails eragected by the man concord's town and country mobile home park. residents will attest to the proliferation of tire-popping objects in the area of san miguel road. >> they've been roofing nails, screws, regular nails, they've been thumb tacks, a whole bunch of just everything that will p. says tires po the problem started a couple of years ago. he spent $480 to repairtire. >> they've filed police reports, tried putting cameras and we can't figure out who is doing it. >> reporter: someone posted a warning local blog, claycord.com saying the nail thrower is back. the park's manager confirms three recent flat tire complaints. he documented around 50 incidents back in 2015. >> i g flats right here and up there a little bit. >> reporter: nina wolfgram tes but didn't report it. she later learned someone who lives nearby may be responsible. >> the person probably thinks it is funny because that's what i heard, but it is not. it is going to unnamed manufacturer of the alcohol had bad manufacturing practices. all of that alcohol now confiscated well, now that the countdown the solar eclipse, the big celestial event is exactly one week away, but getting your hands-on a pair of eclipse glasses could be tough. 7 on your side gave away 1,000 pairs after getting 5,000 requests. a quick search on amazon shows many vendors are just sold out. ones that still have them are charging anywhere from $30 to $100. we did some research and found that production costs for each pair are less than 50 cents, so someone is making a whole lot of money on next week's big show in the city, which will not happen for quite sometime. but, of course, if it is as cloudy as it is today we don't have to worry about the glasses. sandhya, we won't be able to see it anyway. >> come on now, dan. i'm going to remain optimistic. some of you will be able to see it a week from today. i do want to show you the details on this. the eclipse begins at 9:01 next monday, and we are talking about the maximum eclipse when the moon passes in front of the sun at 10:15 in the morning. that's when 75% of it will be eclipsed. the eclipse ends at 11:37. you have a better chance of viewing between 10:15 and 11:37 in the morning because at 9:01 there will be quite a bit of low cloudiness around near the coast and the bay. as far as where you're going to see the best view, you have to head up to oregon. i mean sail 'em will have 100% eclipse there. here in the bay area, we're basically looking at less of the sun being blocked. it will be about 75%. so we have a pretty good chance of seeing it as long as you stay away from the coast where it is going to be socked in. all right. since we are on the topic, it is socked in tonight along the coastline and around parts of the bay. on live doppler 7 we are watching a deep marine layer, already seeing some mist and a live look right now from our emeryville camera, overcast skies, temperatures from san francisco, to oakland, san jose, upper 50s to low 60s. santa rosa at 59 degrees. concord, livermore, 61. pretty comfortable. this live picture shows what you can expect tomorrow morning, and that will be just cloudy conditions aross the bay area. you will need your wipers at times. watch out if you are driving. there will be some damp roads, some morning commute planner showing you that. light chop if you are taking the ferry ride across the bay heading to work. if you are walking, watch out for slippery conditions due to the drizzle or perhaps a light shower. from our "abc 7 news" exploratorium cam are you we are looking at gray skies. overcast morning with drizzle or a light shower not out of the kwef. below average temperatures again tomorrow. and looking at gradual warm the rest of the week. here is the 12-hour plan for tuesday. cool and drizzly if you are sending kids back to school. if they're back to school, definitely need a jacket or at least an extra layer. mild inland at noon time. temperatures in upper 50s to low 70s, below average highs again before 4:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. the hour-by-hour forecast shows not only extensive cloud cover at 5:00 a.m. with the exception of the north bay where you will see mostly clear skies, by wr89 you are looking at green there. most looking at drizzle but there could be an isolated shower in there. don't be surprised if you are running into some wet roadways. 4:00, most of you will be seeing sunshine for your tuesday afternoon. tomorrow morning it is going to start out dreary and drizzly, and for the afternoon highs will range from the low 60s to low 80s. definitely remaining on the breezy side right along the coastline. here is a look at your accuweather seven-day forecast. the temperatures will go from below average to starting to rise on wednesday and then bouncing back to normal thursday, friday, saturday. we'll get you up into the low 90s inland, low to mid 60s coast side only to cool down again on sunday. the all-important monday forecast for the solar eclipse -- all right, i know dan says you're not getting a good view if you're near the coast. right now looking pretty cloudy for monday.
