Tonight his quick actions may have saved someones life. Good evening. Im eric thomas. That fire forced evacuations of that entire building tonight. It started just after 7 00 on addison street between sacramento and acton and put out smoke that could be seen for miles. Abc7 News ReporterAlyssa Harrington is here with the latest on this developing news. Reporter eric, one man was critically burned in this fire, but it could have been a whole lot worse if not for the brave actions of one neighbor who ran into this burning building. The fire started around 7 15 tonight. Our emeryville camera shows the thick, dark cloud of smoke over the city. Katherine tippett shared this video of the flames pouring out of a third story unit. Inside that burning apartment was a man lying on the floor and yelling for help. A man who lives in the building next door saw the smoke and knew he had to do something. He ran into that burning building and helped the man get outside before rescuers got there. I started yelling to him, like get up, get out. Get out. Then finally he kind of snapped out of it and came to. So i said, dont worry about your stuff. Just get up and get out. His hands were all burned. But i just felt like hi to get in there and help someone, so i did. Reporter the victim was taken to Highland Hospital to be treated for burns. At one point, all 27 units were evacuated because of the fire. I looked out of my window and saw flames shooting out. Heard a big knock on my door. There was just a ton of smoke billowing out at the time. Even from University Avenue you could see the smoke, dark black smoke. Reporter most of the residents are back in their apartments tonight. Two units are damaged. One has extensive fire damage, the other water damage. The red cross is helping out those residents who cant go home tonight. In a tenmain manifesto, a Software Engineer blasts the company for its diversity efforts, saying gender gaps are biological differences, not the result of sexism, lilian kim joins us from googles San Francisco offices with more on this story. Lilian . Reporter eric, the letter caught the publics attention when google employees began tweeting about it. Since then, its created quite a backlash and a response from the companys diversity chief. Its yet another example of what many believe is a sexist culture throughout silicon valley. This time, it came from a google employee. Gizmodo obtained the letter written by a Software Engineer who hasnt been publicly identified. In it, he says we need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism. Women on average have more nur ott citizen many. This may contribute to the higher levels of anxiety women report and to the lower number of women in highstress jobs. Its really discouraging to see this kind of thing raise itself. Reporter Rosemary Joyce is an anthropology largely due to opinions like that of the letters author, not due to any biological factors. Having an unwelcoming atmosphere where youre told that youre probably not someone who belongs there makes it hard to succeed. So the memo itself is creating a chilly climate, which will make it harder for people to succeed. Reporter googles latest diversity report says women make up only 20 in tech roles and 25 in leadership roles. In response to the letter, Danielle Brown emailed employees over the weekend, reiterating the companys commitment to diversity. Changing a culture is hard, and its often uncomfortable, but i firmly believe google is doing the right thing. Tech workers we talked with agree. I think women should be able to work in tech and be encouraged to work in tech. When theres a diverse workforce, you have different opinions. You have different ideas. You have reporter lilian kim, abc7 news. A half dozen people attending a Company Picnic at Menlo College escaped serious injury when a large branch collapsed right next to them. Menlo park fire responded to the fire yesterday afternoon. A branch broke off an oak tree and strug several people. Another two dozen people moved out of the way just before the limb came crashing down. I think as a result of several years of drought and then a winter of heavy rains contributed to the limb breaking. Paramedics treated a woman for a blow to the head, and a 1yearold child suffered scratches. A hayward man shot at after pursuing a truck thief. It all began outside a home on gamble court in hayward where a man took off with someone elses truck. Abc7 News Reporter cornell bar nar has our story tonight from hayward. He stuck his head out the window. Reporter stacy jetton talks about confronting the man who stole his truck on saturday. He was visiting a friend on gambl court in hayward. I thought i heard my truck start up. Reporter his dodge ram truck had been ripped off. This neighbor saw it happen. Jetton borrowed his buddys truck to follow the thief. I pulled up to the back of him and said, hey, thats my truck. And he said, so and so you, and pulled out a gun and shot. So then he took off, and i didnt bother to follow after that. Reporter the gunman missed. Jetton called 911. Hayward Police Briefly chases the man through city streets where he crashed into several cars. At one point police say the suspect drove toward officers. One officer opened fire, missing the suspect, who crashed the stolen truck moments later and was arrested. Neighbors say another car was stolen from the same hayward address last week. At the end of the day, you know, its just you have to be watchful. Reporter neighbors now on alert. Stacy jetton says his truck seen here before the crash was totaled. He says next time hell leave chases to the cops. I was glad i didnt get shot. Reporter police are too. In hayward, cornell barnard, abc7 news. Oakland police are investigating a shooting that left as many as six people injured this afternoon. It was first reported on e street between 105th and 106th avenues at about 4 43 this afternoon. Some of the victims were taken to area hospitals by civilians, others by ambulance. Police do not believe any of the injuries are lifethreatening, and no word yet on suspects or motive in the shooting. Two murder suspects arrested in the bay area on friday are facing extradition proceedings. Wyndham lathem, a Northwestern University professor is scheduled to appear in alameda superior court. Andrew warren, an employee from Oxford University in england, is expected to appear in court in San Francisco. Theyre accused in the stabbing death of cosmetologist trenton cornellduranleau in a chicago highrise, police found duranleaus body badly mutilated inside professor lathems apartment nine days ago. Friends say prior to his death, duranleau and lathem were dating and he wanted out of that relationship. Guys arent caught and theres a murder seven floors beneath is. Its kind of weird. Now that theyre in custody, ill sleep better in night. Warren arrived in chicago three days before the murder. A woman is pleading tonight to get her priceless stolen memories back. Surveillance video shows a man rummaging through liz kaines parked car in San Francisco. It helped on june 6th on olive street. The man leaves in a hurry with several backs. Cai kaine was in the process of moving and said she forgot she had a bag of clothes in the trunk of her car with six laptops. Videos of her dad who has stage 4 cancer were on those computers. Now that her dad has only been given months to live, those videos are everything to her. She says whoever has her items now, she just wants them back, no questions asked. Witnesses caught a brutal attack on a woman at a gas station in los angeles on video. A lyft driver says she was the victim of road rage that ended in robbery. Tenicia bennett had just dropped off a customer and stopped to gas up when two women, a driver and her passenger, jumped out of a car and began hurling insults and punches. They grabbed tenicia by the hair and dragged her and threatened other customers to tried to intervene. I did not think that i would pthought i would experience ave Something Like that. The attackers took her wallet, her phone, and her rent money. Lapd has been able to trace the cars license plate and has a lead on the suspects. Space movie fan jack davis from new jersey sent this letter to the agency asking for a position as a new planetary protection officer. Thats a scientist working to prevent possible contamination from samples brought from space. Jacks letter said he was qualified for the job because he saw so many alien and superhero movies. He got a thank you letter back from nasa. No job offer contained in it, but nasa told jack to do well in school, and someday he might get there.
