>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. a horrific discovery at the border on a sweltering day. a tractor-trailer filled with up to 100 undocumented immigrants. tonight nine are dead and more than a dozen are in critical condition. good evening. i'm kate larsen in for eric thomas. tonight authorities in texas are considering this an immigrant smuggling attempt gone wrong. an employee at a walmart in san antonio called police early this morning after a man walked into the store and asked for water. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow is in our newsroom with the story. >> reporter: in addition to those fatalities, at least 17 people are reportedly being treated for life-threatening injuries. the u.s. attorney office says the driver is in custody. a criminal complaint is expected to be filed as early as tomorrow morning. officials are calling it a deadly case of human smuggling. at least 39 people inside a big rig truck parked in this texas walmart parking lot. nine men died. >> the air-conditioning was not working, so everyone was removed. >> reporter: 30 people are being treated at area hospitals. at least two of the victims are under 18 years old. >> we triaged each one of these people. it was a mass casualty situation for us so we treat it just like you would do an airline crash. >> we utilized helicopters to fly patients out. we utilized at least seven area hospitals. >> reporter: authorities found one person in a wooded area near the walmart sunday morning. it's believed many more people escaped before authorities arrived. it wasn't until someone inside the trailer asked a walmart employee for water that that employee then called plolice. the u.s. attorney office says investigators have identified the driver as 60-year-old james matthew bradley jr. of clearwater, florida. bradley, who is in custody, and anyone else found to be involved is expected to face state and federal charges as early as monday. officials say they will not release the identities of the victims or where they're from until their families can be notified. melanie woodrow, abc7 news. developing news from castro valley tonight where authorities have found a body after a three-hour search. a hiker told police they thought they saw the body near the redwood canyon golf course along redwood road. that's what launched the search. at this point the cause of death is unclear, but we do expect to learn more from the east bay regional park police tomorrow. a grass fire that burned near gav lynn college in gilroy is 50% contained tonight. near castro valentinely road and santa theresa boulevard in southern santa clara county. fire crews say they stopped the flames from spreading at this point. no structures were threatened. cal fire called in water dropping helicopters and airplanes in the first few hours of that fire. in his final interview, the late actor john heard said he elected to undergo back surgery at stanford medical center so he could get back to work acting. heard was interviewed by actress ileana douglas last wednesday. the 71-year-old actor spoke at length about his love of acting and spoke of his older sister and mother, both actors, who encouraged him to consider acting as a career. >> my mother said why don't you get off your butt and do something? and i said, like what? and she said, i don't know. something, you know. you got to do something. my mother always said, you know, john, you have to take an interest in things. >> and he certainly accomplished a lot in his five decades of acting. he's best remembered for playing the father in the "home alone" movies. heard was discovered dead friday afternoon in a palo alto hotel room where he was recovering from surgery. the pilot of a single-engine plane suffered minor injuries this afternoon after he crashed at the reid-hillview air important in san jose. an faa spokesperson says the piper cherokee took off from one runway but crashed moments late onto a parallel runway. the pilot was the only person on board. the plane was badly damaged after the impact. both the faa and mtsb are investigating what causes the cash. operations should be back to normal tomorrow for southwest airlines at oakland international airport. computer network problems at the airport caused lengthy delays for travelers. passengers told abc7 news they faced long delays checking in. >> we should be compensated for it. we're not sure if we're going to make our flight. after this interview, we're going to sprint to our terminal to see if our plane is still here. >> a southwest spokesperson says the problem was fixed after a few hours, and passenger who's were delayed should all be on their way now to their destinations. no other airports were affected. a thrill today for soccer fans here in the bay area. two of the world's very best men's teams went head to head at levi's stadium. as abc7 news reporter lilian kim reports, the much anticipated matchup between manchester united and real madrid didn't quite live up to the expectations many fans had. >> reporter: it's not very often when the world's top soccer players come to the bay area. justin lara is a huge manchester united fan, evident from his tattoo. he's been following the team around ever since they arrived saturday. >> seeing all the players up close, they only come every two years or so. so it's important. >> reporter: for others, seeing real madrid at levi's stadium was a taste of home. san francisco resident maria lopez larios is from madrid. >> it is like really amazing the vibe. it's incredible. it's like almost surreal. >> reporter: this matchup between manchester united and re real madrid was part of a tournament established four years ago to bring top international teams to north america. as exciting as it was, many fans seemed disappointed. players seemingly not giving it their all. this was an exhibition match. >> it didn't live up to the hype. the game was pretty dull. there wasn't a lot going on. >> reporter: some key players were missing. fan favorite ronaldo didn't show up. >> was that a disappointment? >> a little bit. not like i'm going to meet him. that would be nice. >> reporter: despite all that was lacking, many say watching the best in the world here at home was worth it. >> these guys work together more, so they're more integrated in their team work when they're pressing, when they're falling back as a team. nothing like it in the world. >> reporter: in the end, manchester united came out on top, beating real madrid 2-1 in penalties. in santa clara, lilian kim, abc7 news. an even bigger game on wednesday night. the u.s. soccer team won its game against costa rica over the weekend, so the team will play jamaica in the gold cup final wednesday night. that game begins at 6:30. here in san francisco today, a record number of runners hit the street for the annual marathon. thousands of people ran past some of the city's most well known landmarks. it was the biggest race ever for the bay area with extra steps taken to keep all of those runners safe. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story. ♪ >> reporter: finishing the 40th annual san francisco marathon earned you a medal and some bragging rights. >> i did it. hello. i'm done. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: 39-year-old jorge maravilla jumped for joy after winning the marathon with a time of 2:28. >> we all share one common thing and that is to get to the finish line. i'm fortunate to be a part of that community. >> reporter: 25-year-old devin mcmahon from stanford was top women's finisher at 2:52. a record 27,500 runners were not far behind, including first-timer pyu, who told himself keep going. >> the first thing came into my mind, never give up. anything in my life that comes in as a hurdle, i'm never going to give up. >> reporter: there was a large police present along the 26-mile course. the sfpd bomb squad was staged near the finish line. and for the first time in the marathon's 40-year history, all northbound lanes of the golden three hours because of terrorism concerns. >> we are very excited to have worked with the golden gate bridge district and all of the local authorities to ensure we were able to do that for our runners' safety. >> nice and sparkly. >> the finish line, the last place you'd expect to see this. a wedding proposal. but alex said why not and popped the question to mariza. >> i was so surprised. i was so surprised. i was hoping it would happen at some point. i didn't think it would happen just as we came over the finish line. >> by the way, she said yes. in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc7 news. well, this sounds very uncomfortable, but for a good cause. two san francisco police officers ran today's marathon in their full uniforms.% they did it to honor their fallen colleagues across the country. the department tweeted these pictures of the officers, irving garcia and glen griffin, just after the race today. the average police belt, by the way, weighs between 20 and 25 pounds. wow. we'd love to warning tourists visiting mexico to be extra cautious. this after the death of their loved one who drowned while drinking at a resort bar. here's abc news reporter marcy gonzalez with what the family suspects caused the young woman's death. >> reporter: tonight the death of a young wisconsin woman triggering new concerns about the cocktails at some popular resorts in mexico. 20-year-old abby connor died in january during a family vacation to a five-star, all inclusive resort in playa del carmen. her family suspects her drinks were somehow tainted, and they are not alone in their concerns. a 2015 report finding 43% of all alcohol consumed in mexico is produced illegally. officials there seizing nearly a million and a half gallons of bootlegged liquor from hotels and bars they say could be infused with grain alcohol or methanol. >> is someone putting something in the drinks or is it the alcohol is tainted? i'm not sure. or is it a combination of the two. >> after maureen webster's son drowned, she started a site where dozens of people are sharing their nightmare experiences. >> people are going from being perfectly fine to be blacked out in an instant. >> reporter: one of them, jamie va lairry, describing to the milwaukee journal sentinel how she and her husband both blacked out for hours at a resort in playa del carmen after just a couple of drinks. >> his voice screaming, jamie, jamie, get up. we've been drugged. >> the u.s. consulate in mexico says it is aware of the reports but is not issuing any new warnings for travelers. marcy gonzalez, abc news. a cautionary tale tonight about posting pictures of yourself on vacation. take a look at this instagram post from hilary duff. she appeared to be having a great time on vacation in canada but while she was enjoying the time with her son, thieves were reportedly helping themselves to thousands of dollars of jewelry from her home in beverly hills. duff says she's thankful nobody was hurt in the incident. east bay congressman eric swalwell spent his saturday living in the shoes of some of his constituents. he took a stab as a southwest airlines baggage handler over the weekend, working on the ramp at oakland airport. he threw checked bags, drove the tug, and martialed flights to and from their destinations. swalwell later donned a green apron and assumed the role of a barista at a dublin starbucks. it was all part of the in your shoes initiative. an animal rescue organization is asking for the return of a puppy that went missing in san rafael. the milo foundation shared this picture of a very cute spaniel beagle mix on facebook. they say the puppy, who is named may, disappeared at an adoption event saturday at terrapin kos roads in san raf el. she is 11 weeks old and weighs less than 30 pounds and is microchiped. we have the contact information on our website. thei the milo foundation is offering a reward for may's safe return. >> among those 27,000 runners who took to the streets today during the san francisco marathon, many were there as members of our own abc7 family including meteorologist drew tuma. there he is holding up his medals after the race. drew by the way completed the of the world's best swimmers competes in a first of its k the most decorated olympian ever was no match for the power of a great white shark. swimmer michael phelps raced a great white shark today to help kick off the discovery channel's annual shark week. to even the swimming field, phelps did wear a monofin. the shark zipped through the 100 meter race in 36.1 seconds, which by the way is 10 seconds faster than the men's world record for that race. phelps lost to the shark by just two seconds. phelps said that he and the shark were not in the water at the same time. the whole thing was a computer simulation. the olympian later tweeted, next time, warmer water, please. sounds cold. he was wearing a thin wet suit too. >> but did the shark know that it was racing? or was it just swimming? >> that's a good point. he might have been locallly gagg about. talking a little baseball and the giants. the padres break through a roadblock to take the series from san francisco. and 60-year-old man from clearwater florida will be charged tomorrow in connection with the deaths of nine people who were found in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer abandoned in san antonio, texas. james matthew bradley jr. is accused of trafficking the people from mexico and guatemala. 20 other people were rescued. many are hospitalized in very serious condition after suffering heatstroke and dehydration. a wisconsin mother and father are asking tourists going to mexico to pay special attention after their college-age daughter passed out and drowned after drinking at a resort bar. the family suspects the alcohol was tainted and caused the 20-year-old to lose consciousness. in his final interview before he died, late actor john heard said he wanted to undergo back surgery so he could return to work. heard was found dead friday at a palo alto hotel where he was recuperating from the procedure that was performed at stanford medical center. the russia probe is expected to headline a busy week in washington. health care reform and a new democratic economic plan are also on the agenda. abc7 news reporter brian clark has a preview. >> reporter: this week, the president's son-in-law, jared kushner, heads to capitol hill to be questioned behind closed doors by the senate and house committees investigating russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. >> i'm confident that when jared kushner speaks, and i'll keep my fingers crossed in saying this to you, it will probably be the last time he has to talk about russia. >> reporter: the white house trying to move past the media attention on russia. >> there's a ton of focus on what i like to call russia fever. >> reporter: today the white house struggled to explain where the president stands on pardons, leaving some to wonder if he may pardon himself should something come up in the russia investigation. >> the issue of pardons is not on the table. there's nothing to pardon from. >> reporter: meantime the senate is expected to vote this week on health care reform. the president tweeting sunday night, if republicans don't repeal and replace the disastrous obamacare, the repercussions will be far greater than any of them understand. despite that tweet, the margin for passage much smaller and the democrats known more for opposing the president these days according to an abc news/"washington post" poll unveiled their new economic agenda monday. >> simply put, what do democrats stand for? a better deal for working families. higher wages, less costs, tools for the 21st century. >> brian clark, abc news, new york. a dog owner says her labrador retriever is recovering from a vicious attack by otters in washington. family members saw the attack on american lake in lakewood last week. at least three otters swarmed 2-year-old gracie. the lab made it back to shore and ran home. she is recovering from her bite wounds, and apparently it's not the first time the otters have attacked. >> the local vet, who also said they had had different reports of animals being attacked by the otters here on american lake. >> the wooling ham family would like to see the department of fish and wildlife take care of the problem. in the meantime they're staying out of that lake until the otters are no longer a threat. it was graduation day in mississippi for almost a dozen therapy dogs and their handlers. >> bless you and all your service that you do. >> the dogs wore caps and gowns to receive their certifications so they can work in nursing homes, libraries, and hospitals. their handlers shared some of their success stories at the ceremony. >> that dog in that moment was what it took to bring the man back into reality. >> and when she laughed, she said, god sent this to us because we were her angels. >> that puppy licked on her face, and that girl smiled. >> handlers say it takes a calm, patient, and friendly personality to make a successful therapy dog, and that's where these guys shine. in a busy room full of other dogs, most of them wanted to just chill out. tonight we have an incredible comeback to share with you. the olympic high jumper paralyzed in an accident vowing to walk down the aisle on his wedding day. abc news reporter tom llamas reports. >> that's olympian jamie nieto, soaring to new heights. but a freak accident recently crushed his dreams and his neck. >> i thank god i'm still alive. >> reporter: from his hospital bed just days after his surgery, jamie describing what happened. >> i hit my head doing a flip, and my disk in my neck slipped and hit the nerve and paralyzed me. >> reporter: making things even worse, he was about to get married. >> a lot of things come into perspective when something like this happens. >> reporter: jamie vowing to his fiancee he would walk down the aisle with her. >> i think i had a little anxiety just because i wanted to walk the best i could walk. >> reporter: so jamie started intense physical therapy, learning to walk again, building back his muscles to show his wife he wouldn't break his promise. and on their wedding day, jamie started out on a walker to preserve his strength as he put on his tuxedo. then came that moment. after the new couple said "i do," this home video is shaky, but you can see jamie right there slowly taking the first steps with his new wife. >> a really special day to see him walk down that aisle and just to have him there on my arm. >> reporter: jamie's life has changed so much, and though he can't compete against other olympians, he's taking that same drive to fuel his personal comeback. >> you just keep pushing and fighting, and every time you fall, you get back up and try it again. >> reporter: tom llamas, abc news, new york. next on abc7 news at 11:00, this high-tech truck can bake a pizza as it drives to you, and it's not necessarily a person who is putting that pie together. and i'm meteorologist drew tuma. the warm air will retreat for a day or so, but then those temperatures are going t members of the sri lankaen navy i have are being credited for saving the lives of a pair of young elephants who nearly drowns. these photos show the rescue effort. the flotilla of boats towed the elephants back to shore. both animals were barely able to keep their trunks above water. it is the second such rescue of wild elephants in as many weeks. the animals were likely swept away while crossing shallow lagoons in the area. so by some accounts, americans eat around 3 billion pizzas every year. the mom and pop pizzeria, the big chains that promise to deliver in 30 minutes or less. but abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom is going inside one pizza joint that is trying to offer the best of both worlds and using robots to make it happen. >> reporter: before the sliced onions and fresh grated cheese, the first ingredient for a good pizza is an obsessive italian chef. >> pizza runs in your veins. >> absolutely 100%. olive oil, the whole nine. i got marinara pumping through my heart. >> reporter: so it took some convincing to get him into this kitchen where cooks like this work alongside others like this. >> it's been quite a ride. i never thought i'd be making pizza at robots. >> reporter: the kitchen at zoom pizza is more like a factory. >> you have robots and humans working together to make thousands of pizzas every day. >> reporter: instead of a chain with shops on every corner, zoom plans to serve all of silicon valley from this one location. >> i pay much less than my competitors in rent, something like five times less. and what do i do? i re-invest that surplus into higher quality ingredients. >> reporter: they have their own traditional italian starter dough and no mystery meat. >> trying to get all this local produce in and trying to replicate really restaurant-style pizza. >> reporter: but if there's one secret ingredient, it's the very last one. while they start cooking your pizza here in the kitchen, they finish cooking it on the way to your door. >> we don't do the final step of cooking until we're seconds away so your pizza is always coming fresh out of the oven. >> reporter: that's where this truck comes in. it's a pizzeria on wheels controlled by computers. >> we have one of our oven racks. >> reporter: some contain predictive pizzas. they guess the orders
