♪. live where you live, thisst "abc 7 news." ♪. this is not going to be a case where coaching one night, not coaching the next. i'm not going to do that to our team. >> is there a scenario where you wouldn't coach for the rest of the post season? >> yeah. reality tonight for steve kerr and the warriors as the team tries to win another championship and it may have to do so without its leader. i'm eric thomas. as you just heard, kerr himself addrsed the mia this afrnoon and "abc 7 news" sports anchor mike shumann has our story from portland. >> steve kerr showed up today to a voluntary workout with his team unbeknownst to the media. general manager was supposed to speak to us and update his condition, but who showed up? steve kerr. >> the last few days have been difficult can. you guys saw me at the end of game two. i was very uncomfortable. you know, i was uncomfortable at practice the other day and with things getting worse i just made the decision i couldn't -- couldn't coach, and so as of now i'm consulting with my doctors. i'm hoping for some improvement, and if i can get some improvement i'll get back on the sidelines but i'm not going to do that unless i know i can help the team. >> steve kerr also told us he will not come back on a part time basis, only when he's ready to go full time. he's working with his doctors, hopefully finding a way to get rid of these debilitating head aks. reporting in portland, i'm m shumann. steve kerr dealt with back problems. he had to get back surgery to fix a ruptured disk in his spine in 2015. the pain at that time was so intense he could barely enjoy winning the title and parade. as start of last season neared he revealed he was suffering from complications from the surgery, my fwrans, pain behind his eyes. he went on to miss the first 36 games. he called the time away unbelievably frustrating. kerr coached every regular season game this year. he only missed a single shooter round before a march 2nd loss against the bulls where he mem raably smashed his clip board in frustration. kerr did not coach last night and he is out indefinitely. assistant coach mike brown will take his place until kerr is healthy once again. dubs fans are clearly disappointed. lillian kim stopped by the steam store the and is live from san francisco city hall with our story tonight. >> reporter: eric, city hall is lit up in warriors' colors now that the playoffs are under way, but the post season has taken a bit of a somber tone now that coach kerr is out for the time being. >> it is really sad to hear. i feel really bad for him. >> reporter: dove nation is extending sympathies to steve kerr, the beloved coach forced to sit out for who knows how long. >> sorry for steve kerr because it has to be tough to go through the whole season and have to sit on the bench and watch now. >> reporter: with kevin durant about ready to return to the playoffs, warriors fans were feeling confident about another nba championship. with kerr out, nervous thoughts are creeping in, at least for some. >> for this series, maybe not so much because we're up 3-0, the next series is definitel will be something that's going to be costly. but if we make it all the way to the finals, it would be great to have kerr there. >> reporter: others though say as much as they would like to see coach kerr return healthy they have confidence the warriors can win without him. >> we have a good core of not only other coaches to pick up the slack, but strong and stable guys in the locker room that can help give the will whole, you know, leadership they're going to need. >> reporter: kerr's announcement is the latest in a string of bad news for bay area fans. after having reached the final last year, the sharks are out of the stanley cup playoffs. giants pitcher out indefinitely after an injury from a dirt bike accident. >> not going into the playoffs without kerr, bum gardner going out, tough day. >> reporter: tough times for bay area sports. malia kim, "abc 7 news." you can watch the full steve kerr news conference on our website at "abc 7 news".com by downloading "abc 7 news" he news app. if you need to fly on sunday for the next few months, you might want to think about oakland or san jose airports. here is a live look at sfo where runway work will create problems on sundays for weeks to go. "abc 7 news" reporter sergio is live for us. passengers found it out the hard way. >> reporter: a lot of passengers were frustrated throughout the day because of cancellations and delays. i did reach out to some of the airlines here at sfo to ask if they made any special arrangements or schedule changes because of this construction project they've known about for weeks. so far no word from those airlines. the delays and cancellations continued through the evening. >> not great. delayed a couple of hours. >> reporter: the reason for the delay is an ongoing construction project on one of the runways. crews are installing new led lights at the center of the runway and repaving. that created major headaches for the pratt family's travel plans back home. >> i've been rerouted on another flight and i have to get a rental car and drive two hours home. >> reporter: her sister hoped to fly out of sfo at 11:30 p.m. to get home to charlotte, north carolina for home tomorrow morning. >> it was delayed until 7:30 tomorrow morning, and they were able to rebook me on the midnight flight so i'll get in on the 8:00 a.m. >> reporter: her mother ellen is on the delayed flight that won't leave until 7:00 a.m. >> we went to the counter and asked for a voecher for a hotel i thought they would give me one, she said no. >> reporter: she was with a group of students trying to get home to san diego. >> there were folks this morning that got notification their afternoon flights were cancelled and flights before and after were cancelled so they didn't take the risk can and decided to fly out of san jose or another airport. >> reporter: some incoming flights had to be diverted to san jose or oakland. passengers were then bussed to sfo. the construction will continue every sunday through the middle of july. so be prepared for more delays. at sfo, "abc 7 news." developing news now in morgan hill. two young men died and a woman went to the hospital following a head-on crash. police believe a speeding chrysler crossed over into oncoming traffic along santa teresa boulevard near native dancer drive both people inside the chrysler died at the scene. a woman was driving the car hit had by the chrysler. she is expected to survive. "abc 7 news" was in san francisco when a group of kayakers bundled up after being rescued from the bay. firefighters tell us four people wound up in the water when their kayaks cap sized near pier 54 in mission bay. a police department boat rescued them from the water. after this afternoon's rescue firefighters shared tips on enjoying the bay safely. >> make sure you wear the right clothes, a wetsuit so you can be in the bay if something happens and some way to contact the police or fire department. >> firefighters believe one of the kayakers called from the bay for help. voters in france will choose between a centrist newcomer and a far right nationalist for president. today they chose emmanuel macron and marine la pen from a field of 11 candidates. the populist movement has voters craving real change and some saying this election threatens to shake up europe more than brexit. we asked french citizens watching returns this morning in san francisco what they want to see from their next president. >> someone who will be good for france. some new blood, somebody who can bring something new. >> i would love it, emmanuel macron is very capitalist, like t dynamic and i love his ideas. >> macron is the frontrunner. the run-off will be held in about two weeks. tonight we're just days away from president trump's 100th day in office, and he's heading into a big week. he's promising to unveil his tax reform plan this week, which includes a massive tax cut. also, if an agreement on the budget cannot be reached by the end of the president's 100th day on friday, the government will shut down. the president is demanding that congress put up the money for a wall at the mexican border. more than 100 people stood holding signs and chanting to defend san francisco sank -- sanctuary city. towards san francisco. these are the forecast features. it will be breezy tonight with light rain developing by early morning, first in north bay and sweeping south ward. periods of light rain and showers throughout the i today, tapering off tomorrow evening. sunny and milder weather, in fact warmer weather by the end of the week. overnight as showers develop we will see low temperatures mainly in low to mid 50s, and tomorrow moving into the afternoon scattered showers, periods of light rain, high temperatures mainly in low to mid 60s. not very mild tomorrow. the approaching storm ranks one on the impact scale, a storm of light intensity. it will begin raining early in the morning in the north bay and showers into the evening hours. most locations will see rainfall totals under a tenth the first time he's had to sit out because of complications from his back surgery. last season he missed the first 43 games and luke walton had to fill in. nowike brown will take over. brn has plenty of experience, having been the head coach both the cavaliers and lakers. kerr is confident he can do the job. >> i was on my coach in my room telling my son, we should put so and so in right now, and that guy was going to the table. mike and i are thinking along the same lines. >> we don't have to tell our guys much because they've been there, done that. so the group, you know, just as a whole headlines, warriors fans are sad and nervous the hear the team may have to make a run for the championship without head coach steve kerr. kerr announced today ongoing complications from his back surgery have gotten worse and, well, he will not return to the sidelines until his doctors okay it. he said that could mean he misses the rest of the playoffs entirely. >> flying out of sfo on sunday could be a challenge for the next few months. crews are installing new lights and repaving one of the runways. the work caused delays and cancellations throughout the day and this evening. construction continues through july. the world has its eyes on france tonight where voters have have chosen a run-off in two weeks between two no traditional candidates for it president. centrist newcomer face off against marine le pen. tomorrow marks president trump's 96th day in office as he approaches the end of his first 100 days tonight we take stock in how he's doing. a new abc poll children tied when a fire engulfed a home in new york city. firefighters say they saw the flames and smoke from several blocks ai what before necessary arrived at the scene of this afternoon's fire in queens. only one person survived. he tumbled to the ground from a second story window. witnesses saw a burned child carried out of the home a few miles from new york's kennedy airport. investigators say it is too early to tell how the fire started. to a heart stopping moment caught on camera. a young child tumbling from a back of a church bus into a busy highway. what happens next may have saved her life. abc news reporter philip minna has our story tonight. >> reporter: a heart stopping moment playing out on this highway in arkansas. keep you oy on the bus ahead. out of nowhere the back door swings open. clinging on for dear life is a four-year-old girl. seconds later the girl falls to the ground. unaware of what happened, the bus driver keeps down the road. witnesses say it would be 15 minutes before the bus returned. the little girl, now motionless in the middle of a state highway. >> i saw it happening and it blue my mind. it was kind of like i wasn't even seeing what i was seeing. looking like it was a movie. >> reporter: ryan sampoli, a certified emt and will volunteer firefighter happened to be driving behind the bus, dash cam rolling. that's him rushing to the little girl, cradling her in his arms. moments later the four-year-old gains consciousness. >> i couldn't leave her laying there. >> reporter: he carefully lifts her while his girlfriend was on the phone with 911. >> once the shock kicked in, she started kicking and screaming, you know, where's my mommy and stuff like that. it is heartbreaking. >> a ferry boat operator is blaming an lek kral failure. you can see the large ocean going fare railway slamming into a break water. it happened moments after the vessel left a port on friday. 35 people were hurt, 5 of them had to go to the hospital. the impact severed a fuel line running along the break water and crews are cleaning spilled fuel out of the atlantic ocean. new parking rules went into effect along a street where it is often hard to find a parking space in san francisco. you can now legally park along the planted medians during certain hours on friday evenings, saturdays and sundays. the follows complaints of people parking in traffic lanes. many park while attending nearby churches or visiting delores park. >> i think it is a start to see where, you know, where we can go. you know, they've shortened the distance people can park, it is a part of our commitment to the community, to come out and really limit where people can park. >> cars can be ticketed if they're parked in the gaps between the medians or where red zones have been painted along delores street. it is prom season, and some star athletes from the 49ers made one pro extra special for some bay area teenagers. players showed up usf. the 49ers shared this video for us. it is a chance for 200 people hospital-bound to have a real prom experience. newly-signed wide receiver pierre garcon says his first community event with the team was a great introduction to his young fans. >> it is a prom so i couldn't ask for a better thing to dress up and meet the young kids of the community, especially at the children's hospital here in san francisco. so it is an "abc 7 news" was along the emeryville shoreline where people picked up trash and debris at the park. the city hosted this cleanup as an earth tay in action event. emeryville's mayor took part and shared his solution to shoreline pollution. >> if we could make the trashedible we would truly recycle it. >> the park is a popular spot for kayaking, paddle boarding and bird watching. she is out of this world. the current commander of the international space station is about to break a big report tonight. abc reporter has the story. >> reporter: they call it the peggy factor, mission control code word for the way peggy whitson gets the job done. tonight commander whitson making history for her record for any american. by the time she lands in september her tally will be 666 days in space with more space walks, currently eight, than any other female astronaut. she says what matters is the mission. >> i'm not here because of the record, but i think having the record is important because we have to continue to progress. we have to continue to take the next steps. >> reporter: whitson is perhaps a surprising enter stellar star. at growing up at nine on a farm in iowa she watched the moon landing and her dream was born. >> at the time young girls weren't supposed to do those things. >> reporter: she persevered earning a degree in biochem and landing a job with nasa then overcoming long odds. was ten years before nasa decided she had the right stuff to become an astronaut. her favorite thing about being in space, seeing the earth from north africa's red to caribbean blues from so far away. >> we need to do more to be one earth, one people. >> reporter: gio benitez, abc news, new york. >> the skies looked clear from where she was. here is spencer with a look at the forecast. >> clear for now. cloudy overnight. rain is on the way coming down from our north as you can see right here. so move along, give you a look at the storm impact scale. this storm, the one approaching now ranks one. it is a storm of light intensity. it will start producing light rain early tomorrow morning and have showers throughout much of the day. most locations won't see more than about a tenth of an inch of rain from this system. here is the forecast animation. starting at midnight, notice as the morning commute fwets under way it will be cloudy but not many wet spots but maybe a few spots up north. by midday we will see rain spreading to other parts of the bay area and continuing into the late afternoon, early evening hours. so it may be a wet evening commute, wetter than the morning for sure. here is a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. after tomorrow's light rainfall we start drying out tuesday and wednesday and warming by the end of the week. the weekend feels like almost summer. >> i like that part of the forecast. >> me too. >> all right, spencer. thank you very much. rained on the giants and -- well, they wish it rained on them today. >> you were getting on me saying i had giants and as highlights coming up. i should sar the mariners and rockies. >> exactly. >> coming up in sports, not a good day for the as or giants as he this are out scored by a total of 19 to >> "abc 7 news" sports brought to you by river rock casino. >> the way things are going for the giants, they might be eliminated by mother's day. they lost again this afternoon, to fall seven games out in the national league west. we go to coors field where this little girl did not feel like sharing her cotton candy. meanwhile, the rockies were mean to the giants. in the sixth, perrera rips a base hit. made it 4-0. he also had a two-run homer in the fourth. trevor story follows with a two-run single, ending the day. the shark got roughed up for seven earned runs over five and a third innings. charlie blackmon topped off the inning. colorado wins 8-0, san francisco drops to 6 and 13, start since 1983. the dodgers have been struggling but tonight beat arizona. sieger ties it up with a shot to center. later, gonzales drives in two more runs with this opposite field drive off the wall. grandal added a two run homer to make the final 6-2. the dodgers open a four game series at at&t park tomorrow. these young as fans did not have much to cheer app. in third, bases loaded, triggs walks cruz. 2-0 mariners. one batter later, clears the bases with his first career grand slam, his you fifth homer of the year, made it 6-0. seattle erased any doubt in the seventh as cruz connects for a shot of his own. mariners cruise 11-1 snapping the as' five win win streak. rookie mccall has gotten to start the last playoff games. mike shumann caught up with mccall. >> what did that feel like in the locker room afterwards?
