>> live where you live. this is abc7 news. >> nobody wants to airing comby. nobody will change their minds by arguing. >> now at 11:00, politics in the air. a pilot is forced to calm a planeful of passengers after a heated exchange breaks out over this week's presidential election. good evening. i'm dan ashley. jay i'm ama daetz. an outburst between two passengers happened on a plane at sfo about to head to pew wire toe viarta. >> reporter: most of the passengers didn't see the heated argument between the two passengers because they were settling in for the flight. but they all heard the announcement by the pilot calming everybody before they took off. this is not the announcement you hear from an airline pilot. >> as people we have the common decency to respect each other's decisions and to get along on this three hour and 13 minute flight. >> reporter: the man who shot the video said the announcement came after an argument between two passengers. >> he said at least i get to keep my guns and she said how can you say that to a brown person because she is after african-american. >> reporter: they were arguing about the election. flight attendants separated the passengers before the announcement. this is the latest in a string of outbursts since tuesday. in pittsburgh neighbors snapped a picture of this banner including the n-word. police say it violates an ordinance of banners on private property and ordering the owner to remove it. >> i think it is natural to see eruptions of these feelings here and there across time. but the question is the degree to which it is sustained. leaders take an important role. >> reporter: he praised the united airlines pilot for handling the incident on the plane. >> if anybody has a problem with this and wants to rant or rave, there is another flight tomorrow and you are not going to be on this one. i hope that's clear. >> applause [. >> reporter: the flight continued without incident. abc7 news. >> ama: we have new details on this video that was widely circulated on social media. it shows a woman ranting and using hateful language toward a bart passenger who was having a conversation on her cell phone. people who know the woman contacted abc7 news and they say she is living with mental illness and they are concerned for her safety. bart said with civil discourse deteriorating we want to make clear that threats to riders or employees will not be tolerated. be decent to each other. >> dan: a small, but vocal group of protesters hit the streets. abc7 news was along the embarcadero as about a hundred people took over the busy street with a police escort. monica shared video of the group marching down market street. the protest was peaceful. aaron green shared this video of a protest in santa cruz. uc santa cruz students marched from mission plaza park chanting "not my president" and then unlike the past three nights the protests have remained peaceful. the chp tweeted the photos showing the heavy police presence. they say there have been no arrests. >> ama: days after losing the presidency hillary clinton made her first public appearance tonight, and she had a surprise for her staffers who tried to get her elected. hillary clinton hosted a staff only event in brooklyn. she thanked each person and handed them one of 1200 roses that were sent to her home today. clinton hosted a conference call with volunteers, staffers and donors to ask them to keep fighting for what they believe in. >> this is a tough time for our country. i think we have seen how people have been reacting to the events of this election and i know we've got to be reaching out to each other to keep it clear in our own minds that what we did was so important. >> just one day after meeting with president obama, donald trump confirmed to "60 minutes" he might agree to the president's request not to tamper with some pro visions of obamacare. >> are you going to make sure that people with pre conditions are still covered jievment yes because it happens to be one of the strongest assets. also with the children living with their parents for an extended period. we will very much try and keep that. >> president-elect trumpy told the "wall street journal" if it is not amended it will be repealed and replaced. trump named vice president-elect mike pence the head of his transition team replacing chris dan: breaking news in afghanistan where a suicide bomber has killed four people at a u.s. airbase. it happened at bagram airfield 30 miles north of kabul. 4 toon others were injured -- 14 others were injured. they have not said what nationality they are. bagram is the largest u.s. military base in afghanistan. >> dan: back at home, i-80 is open after officers shut it down for a shooting tonight. investigators say a gunman shot a man in his 20s near the american canyon road. the victim crashed his vehicle, but he is expected to survive. the eastbound lanes were closed throughout much of the evening commute. the gunman is still on the loose. >> ama: tonight we are hearing from the drunk driver who ran a red light and killed a pedestrian in san jose. 61-year-old doug andrin died when he left city hall to get some pizza across the street. here is abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley with the jail house interest saw with the driver who add -- with the driver who admits he was driving under the influence. in an instant he was killed crossing the street to get pizza. this white truck ran the light at fourth and santa clara streets late yesterday afternoon hitting two cars and pushing andrin's body near the abc news van parked on the corner. the photographer and the reporter were treated and released. grief counselors will be on hand where he worked for 10 years as an accountant in the public works department. he lived in this apartment with his beloved cat, tinker bell. he spent a lot of time at the animal care center where they will direct donations to help rescue cats. ricardo gomez talked today about the accident. >> i'm sorry. i drank a couple beers and i wasn't paying attention. >> reporter: he has two previous dui arrests. >> if i could take everything back, i should have never drank. >> reporter: andrin lost everything. leslie brinkley, abc7 news. >> dan: happening now, major construction project on san francisco's van ness avenue is underway. >> ama: it promises to create problems for drivers all over the city for a longtime. >> dan: katie is live along van ness with the story. katie? >> reporter: dan and ama, once complete it will be brand-new and hopefully drive times will be safer and quicker. you can see some of the work happening behind me where they are removing the left hand turn lanes and they have been redirecting traffic and they seem to be moving quickly which means this is a moving target for drivers. short-term there will be confusion and bus riders will have to look for relocated stops. what does an uber driver wish for. the san francisco municipal transportation agency will be reducing van ness avenue from three lanes in both directions to two starting on monday. eventually the center lanes will be designated bus only. >> the buses definitely get in the way. >> especially if they don't pull all the way in and they have their tail hanging out, that's problematic to get around. >> the rendering show what the project will look like when completed. it is similar to the muni trains on third street. the result should mean a time savings of about 15 minutes. this weekend left turns on van ness will be removed at all but three intersections. >> i just feel like it is going to causeway too much traffic. people already drive crazy in the city and i feel like it is total chaos. >> one of the leading causes of collisions throughout the city is left turns. by eliminating some of the left turns we are making the city safer. >> sewer lines will be replaced while the roadway is torn up. >> i it is old and it is time to upgrade them. this project allows us to fix the corridor from the ground up. >> the project is estimated to cost $316 million and it will take around three years to that far was part of the challenge. once you make it through the toll plaza you have to make it through the metering lights. >> dan: we want to know why certain drivers have an advantage on the morning traffic. >> ask any commuter and they will tell you how much they hate the metering lights. >> they are the cause of the traffic. if they let it go plum free it will be fine. >> sometimes it can make things worse. >> i believe thisy are very, very poorly run, and they really cause a lot of congestion. >> reporter: but are they? you can see what happens. the cars come through as many as 16 lanes at the toll plaza. that narrows to 12 and then five across the bridge. we wanted to know how much time the metering lights may be costing drivers. we use sky 7 to find out. we conducted our own time challenge with two abc news cars. the car are the red seven took the lanes. >> we have our cash lane car approaching the toll booth right now. >> despite the stop and go traffic the red car made it from the toll plaza to the metering lights. the cash lane took four times as long and 11 minutes. >> the metering lights cycle faster for the fast rack only lanes. >> john goodwin is with the metropolitan transportation commission and he says fast track drivers are given an advantage. merge lanes and faster metering lights. >> we need to increase the through put and make the whole operation efficient for cash payers and the fast track customers. >> they were installed to help keep the bay bridge from being gridlocked. since then the bay area has grown by 2.3 million people and there has been one significant change to the lights. that was a minor hardware and software upgrade and now 36 years later the bay area traffic managers are looking to upgrade the blinking lights. >> traffic management center keeps close tabs on the bay area's roadways. when traffic increases on the bay bridge they turn on the metering lights manually. >> all we do is we punch in the metering light and hit the send button and it will start to cycle. jay it is pretty low tech. the mtc and cal drains are working on a $7 million upgrade on the metering lights. when complete traffic will move more smoothly on the bridge. thisy will take advantage of the latest smart metering technology. sensors embedded in the on-ramp talk to sensors on the highway. they keep traffic moving. >> it is hard to think on the bay bridge toll plaza as an on-ramp. the idea is to take proven technologies to meter traffic flow on the existing on-ramps. just make it big and put it out there on the bay bridge toll plaza. >> reporter: they hope to complete the upgrades by next year. alexis smith abc7 news. >> ama: hillary clinton may have just lost the presidential election, but the clintons are not done with politics. her daughter, chelsea, is being groomed to run for congress. the report said she would run for the seat representing the area that includes where hillary and former president bill a thick veil of clouds are overhead and we are tracking moisture north of ukiah. a live look from the kgo roof camera and the trees aren't blowing much and the flags aren't swaying much so the breeze is not an issue. low 60s in san francisco and you are mild at 64 degrees. and san francisco you can see city hall there and one other live picture from our abc7 news exploratorium camera and we have nice clouds decorating the financial district. we are expecting sprinkles and mainly sunny on sunday and monday with a chance of rain coming the middle of next week. the hour by hour planner for tomorrow and a few drops out of the north bay are not out of the question. it is just a few drops. i wouldn't change up your plans. mostly cloudy at noon and partly cloudy by 4:00 p.m. temperatures are in the 60s and 70s and then cooling off as we head into the 7:00 hour. if you do have early morning plans there will be some slick areas especially in the north area where the sprinkles do develop. it is not out of the question to see a sprinkle around san mateo. temperatures in the 50s to start your morning. 1:00 a.m. while you are sleeping between ukiah and santa rosa and point reyes. it is right through 4:00 a.m. and then it pretty much dissipates so the system will not have much of a punch. the tail end is coming through the bay area. by afternoon the clouds will start breaking up and the sun will pop out. the temperatures will come down and the cooling will continue. low 60s at they coastline and to the low 70s for your saturday. if you have afternoon plans it does look mice. if you are tired of the not so november-like weather just wait. next week on wednesday a sharp drop in temperatures are coming. look at the 50s and 60s and on thursday we will do it all over again. it will feel like fall around here which brings us to the storm impact sale. a light system coming tuesday evening to wednesday. light rain expected about .05 and it will be breezy in spots. here is a look at the rough time line coming up. tuesday night into wednesday morning it does look like some rain will come through. not a lot, but enough to clean out our air and dampen the roadways. a look at the accu-weather seven-day forecast showing you the possibility of drizzle tomorrow morning in the north bay. the temperatures will come up a few degrees. more sun and low 60s to mid70s. we keep on going with the mild pattern for monday. tuesday, cooler and a chance of rain especially in the evening and then the cooling really kicks in. it is our natural air conditioning. we have a one on the storm impact scale of the low 60s inland and mid50s coast. it is time to bring back out the scarfs and the gloves because it will feel chilly out there, dan and ama nintendo promises to have
