his protest to the national anthem to monday night football as the niners take the field at levi stadium for their season opener. gong. i'm kristen sze in for ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. we are on early tonight to bring you special coverage of the niners home opener against the rams. >> you saw the espn monday night broadcast on abc7. >> let's begin our team coverage with sports director larry beil and mike shumann. guys? >> the niners start with a victory over the rams. the niners defense smothered the rams' offense. they did just enough to keep the chains moving. >> he did just enough. i would have liked to have seen the ball thrown down the field more, but he did damage in the first half with his legs. this is how athletic he is. you don't want him taking shots like that during the course of the game or we will see colin kaepernick a lot earlier than people thought. a lot of short passes and he has trouble pulling the string. the ball is always a little late. so very adequate game. they always had good camera streaks. if you would have asked he would have been -- who would have been the biggest win and it is the niners over the rams. it is hard to shut out anytime, but that 9er defense swarmed the rams offense. >> 22 of 35 for 170 yards and a touchdown. but as you said, you don't want him taking the big shots because , you know, eventually you end up injured and then not able to go. you talked about the defense. let's give credit to the defensive coordinator. this is a new coaching staff. jim o'neil, the use of the blitz was superb, especially the run blitzes. they smothered todd gurley. there was a streaker who ran out on the field and he had way more yardage than todd gurley had tonight. >> i was impressed. he had blitz packages that the rams did not pick up. the swarming defense, you know, gurley has to pick a seem and go. you cannot dance around with this defense. there are eight to 10 guys on every play. very impressive how they shutdown one of the best running backs in the league. this is something they can build on. pre-season you are not sure what you have on defense until you get into the real game. very impressive on the defensive side of the ball. >> 17 carries and 47 yards for todd gurley. he ran 1100 last year and missed the early part of the season. under three yards per carry. as a total the 49ers held the rams to 186 yards for the entire game. let's talk about the 9er rushing game. hydes, when he was in college he was used to that read option game. he looked very comfortable and sometimes not hitting the hole, but the jump cut and get to the outside and find the seem. >> he is a big guy. he paused and gets in the hole quickly. he is so powerful. you can't hit him with one hand and try to bring him down. he will surprise a lot of people. as i said he has to stay healthy. he took a shot to the head and after that concussion in the pre-season i was concerned. he came back and was very strong. close to a hundred yards. just an unbelievable day running the ball. if he stays healthy he will get a thousand yards. >> 23 carries for 88 yards and two touchdowns for carlos hyde. they had beautiful kickout blocks to spring him. so that really allowed the 9ers to settle in. the combination of their running game getting the lead early and then the smothering defense. from you a rams fan you have to be thinking it is great we had a team. did we have to get this one in l.a.? they scruze looked completely -- they looked completely lost. if you are jarod goff you have to be thinking i have to be playing soon. what we saw tonight won't get it done. >> if they will suffer like they are sal lent wise, you ma i as -- talent wise you may as well go with jarod goff and let him grow with the team. i wouldn't be surprised if we see him as the starter. it may be a point in the season let's bring him in and go with the growing pains. we'll see what happens. >> for now, all smiles. 9ers are 28-0. it is this. he said he would and he did. niners' quarterback colin kaepernick is continuing his protest for social justice. he took a knee during the national anthem at tonight's game. you can see his teammate, eric reid, joined him. other players protested, in different ways. some rams and 19ers fans held up their fist during the anthem. >> abc7 news reporter katie mar mar -- marzulo has fan reaction. katie? >> reporter: kristen and dan, a lot of happy 49er fans pouring out of levi stadium right now. to el it you the truth, they have been leaving for awhile. that's how confident they were in this blowout game early on. fans are all smiles heading into the game decked out in their best gear and cooking up some elaborate tailgating feasts. we talked with members of the 9er empire who came from the east coast and one man from florida and another from new york. >> i love the history and i love the attitude and the tradition. >> even though we had a drought i stayed with them. >> i love the team because they are the greatest dynasty ever. here we come. >> reporter: take a look at this. some friendly fans are having such a good time they didn't mind sharing time with rams fans. some of them brought the rams fans with them. the rams fans told me they get a lot of peanuts thrown at them inside levis, but it is worth. it they are happy to have their team back in california. avenue in saratoga. we just sent out a push alert with the abc7 news app one minute ago, but this happened earlier this evening. at this point, officials are not saying if the officer was injured. the department is following a standard protocol after these types of incidents and it demonstrates how dangerous the job of the deputies are. booy sure to download the abc7 news app and enable push alerts for the latest breaking alerts. and breaking news out of vallejo where a car hit a pedestrian. we just found out the victim is an 81-year-old man from colorado. it happened at 8:00 tonight at the intersection of redwood and sonoma. the victim was in the crosswalk and has been rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. the 73-year-old driver stopped and is cooperating. stay with abc7 news a security guard at a florida rehab center. they offered her a plea deal. rebecca kaplan is trying to get guap back to california. >> she is a human being in need of help and she is the prime witness of a major on going investigation. in that role too it is important that she be protected. >> prosecutors say the testimony is crucial in the cases of local officers who may face charges for allegedly reporter: clinton said she should not have called half of them deplorable. >> i hope she gets well soon. no satisfaction whatsoever. >> reporter: video captured the democratic nominee nearly collapsing outside the 9/11 memorial in new york. clinton's campaign said she was overheated and dehydrated and then revealed she was diagnosed with pneumonia on friday. clinton told cnn by phone that she didn't think her pneumonia diagnosis was that big of a deal. >> it is that kind of thing if it happens to you and you are a busy, active person you keep moving forward. >> reporter: clinton weighed in on the health scare in an interview with charlie rose on pbs. >> rarely, but on more than one occasion over the last many, many years the same sort of thing happened to her when she got severely dehydrated. >> reporter: clinton's campaign says she will be releasing additional medical records and called on trump to do the same. trump now says he will do just that and he will release the results of a physical this week. trump's fitness will be the focus of daytime television when he appears on a talk show on wednesday. kenneth motten, abc news, washington. an argument provoked a case of arson in lafayette. police revealed the motive. they say two people got into an argument and one tried to burn down the house last friday. one person suffered burns. lisa stevens now faces attempted murder and arson chacialgs. charges. authorities are warning dog owners to get their pets on a leash. the heads up comes after a dog drowned after being caught in a water vortex caused boo i a drainage pipe on august 30th. shea said she let her year old lab run free not knowing danger. the dog jumped into the water and was swept away. signs warning of the danger and the new fencing are being installed today and storm. >> dan: marine general hospital could be the first to allow it on hospital grounds. they are expected to vote on an ordinance that would allow patients to legally consume marijuana, but not actually smoke it. if they approve it the hospital staff will begin a review process to understand the implications. coming up on abc7 news, an out of control fire burns fire after responding to a large fire that destroyed several businesses. burned through a salon, restaurant and a family dollar store. you can see the fleams were enormous. the firefighters suffered exhaustion and they should be okay. police were investigating a claim that the fire was the result of an argument at the dollar store. more to come as we get more information on that. >> dan: a mosque in florida, that the florida nightclub shooter attended was destroyed in an arson fire. the fire started around midnight and burned for five hours. surveillance video shows a man running from the scene holding a liquid and shaking his hand like it is injured. members of the mosque believe it is a hate crime. they say their community has been harassed since omar matine killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in orlando this june. the ncaa says they will pull seven championship events out of north carolina in response to a controversial law being criticized as anti-lgbt. the ncaa says it wants to provide a safe and respectful environment at the event. the bill passed this year by the north carolina legislature bans transgender people from using bathrooms in government ofices and schools that don't match their sex at birth. >> dan: as we mentioned a few minutes ago colin kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem tonight. >> other players and former athletes are taking note. carolyn tyler spoke with jackie joiner kersey about the interview. >> reporter: the six-time olympic medal list brought hugs and laptops to the george davis senior residences in san francisco's bay view neighborhood helping bridge the digital divide. >> have i been doing my community work for a longtime. >> reporter: it is part of how she tackles in justice. >> i believe fighting injustice with love. it might take a longer time, but we always have to find love. >> reporter: she has been watching colin kaepernick's protest against racism and police brutality as it gains traction and as fellow athletes and in some cases entire teams join in solidarity. some players yesterday raised their fists reminiscent of tommy and john karr los in the 60s. the olympic track stars like joyner searsey. >> joynerkearsey said she was discriminated against in the 80s and 90s. she fought back with a message of positivity. she respects the flag and the anthem, but also the rights of the 49ers quarterback be blowing. it is not going to warm up. just like today we are seeing the temperatures in the upper 50s to the upper 70s. let's get a measure. santa cruz .05. we could see .10 in the wettest spots. it will be cool enough, upper 40 tots mid50s. -- upper 40s to the mid50s. it is a nice mild one. a good 10 to 15 degrees below normal. haven't heard any complaints. midto upper 70s there. along the after he explained the school's dress code. abc7 news was at college park high in pleasant hill when students protested during lunchtime. organizers say the vice principal is being targeted unfairly foretelling hundreds of sophomores whatnot to wear to school. four students complained saying he singled them out. >> he shouldn't be punished foretelling us what is in our planner. >> he was doing his job and he does have a point. his execution was wrong. >> some protesters believe he could have avoided trouble by speaking to the suspected it violators privately. the school district has not commented on jensen's case. >> dan: most hoarding happens indoors, but in one case it is out for all to see. those in river bank in stanislaus county say the pile keeps growing like this. sheriff deputies have visited the property 11 times this year. the county says they are preparing to clear the site itself and then bill the owner for the job. the neighbors say not only is it ugly, it is a health hazard. >> just the smell alone, that's what is a lot of the problem. the row departments and -- the rodents and things, the neighborhood feels the same. >> they are under three weeks notice and neighbors are helping her clean up this massive pile. we have a report of a samsung galaxy 7 exploding and injuring a child. a 6-year-old boy in brooklyn suffered burns when a phone exploded in his hands on saturday night. the phones are under a worldwide recall following a series of fires sparked by batteries in the smartphones. samsung is encouraging customers to exchange the phones at her home nearly 20 years ago now. the mystery has never been solved. >> clayton sandal has more. >> burke ramsey was 9 when his sister jonbenet was murdered and 20 years later he is speaking out for the first time telling dr. phil in the first of three interviews. >> do you remember waking up that morning? >> yep. the first thing i remember is my mom bursting in my room really frantic. i remember her saying where is my baby? where is my baby? >> i wanna be my ♪ >> reporter: when the 6-year-old beauty queen was found dead in the basement on christmas they first focused on an outside intruder, but quickly honed in on her parents, jon and patsy. >> mr. ramsey, did you kill jonbenet? >> no, i did not. >> mrs. ramsey, did you kill your daughter? >> no, i did not kill my daughter. >> reporter: burke would fall under suspicion too. he recalls staying in bed when police arrived. >> i was scared, i think. i didn't know if there was some bad guy downstairs and my dad was chasing off -- him off with a gun. >> reporter: burke ramsey was reportedly paid for the interview. he and his parents were cleared as suspects and the case remains open. ramsey realizes some people thought he and his dan: i'm dan ashley. these attacks happened on saturday night on the cal campus. >> it occurred at the greek theater. katie is live on campus tonight with our developing story. katie? >> reporter: well, the concert at the greek theater was soldout. we are learning that there may have been alcohol-related transports to the hospital and alcohol-related arrests. and while students say they are not surprised by the sexual assaults they also say there is not any excuse for them. >> honestly i would like to say it surprised mooy. >> reporter: it doesn't. she wrote a research paper on sexual assault last year. >> basically it is one in four or one in five women are sexually assaulted during their time in college. >> reporter: today pepper spray and extra precaution follow a concert at the greek theater. three women who attended the mad decent block party, a a soldout electronic dance music event report being sexually assaulted. >> it was not a wild crowd. it was pretty tame to me. >> reporter: one woman said a stranger attacked her. he is described as 21 years old, 5-7, hispanic and wearing a multi-colored tank top, dark shorts and a hat. the campus alerts went out today. >> it is kind of sad how a lot of universities try and sweep it under the rug and stuff. i think berkeley does a good job at bringing it to light compared to other universities out there. >> the other two victims are students, one of which stood in line for the bathroom when a man took her to an unknown location in the venue and assaulted her. he is described as a tall white man with an athletic build wearing a floral shirt and khaki shorts. they have not released information to the third assault. anyone with information is asked to call police. abc7 news. santa clara sheriff deputies are investigating an officer involved shooting in saratoga. it happened earlier this evening . at this poit officials are not saying whether the officer was injured. the department is following standard the push alerts enabled for breaking alerts. sky 7hd is live as deputies search for a gunman wanted for a double shooting. people who know the victim say it may have resulted from a dispute between neighbors. two men ages 19 and 37 were rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds. deputies are questioning a possible suspect who they tracked down at a house nearby. >> dan: tonight we are learning about a bail bondsman who was one of three people killed in a plane crash in reno. he was headed back to the bay area when the small plane crashed right after takeoff at the reno/tahoe airport. the pastor shared this photo with us. he said he was bringing back a client he hunted down after skipping bail. tonight we spoke with the chair of the california bail agent association. she said she knew him well. >> he was a good man. he was hard working and honest and helpful. he took his job very seriously. he was much like what your typical bail bondsman is. we go above and beyond to ensure justice. he was no exception. this was a devastating loss for us in our community. >> dan: the cause of the crash is under investigation. the church is planning a memorial service. >> dan: let's turn kristen? a san francisco fundraiser went on tonight without the democratic presidential candidate. clinton canceled her bay area trip before falling ill. lilian kim is live in the newsroom. lilian? >> clinton was able to participate by calling into the event. she sounded healthy, upbeat and as focused as ever. they knew hillary clinton wouldn't be here, but they came anyway scrievment we need her to rest and feel better. she was giving her all and then some. >> as many as 3,000 people converged in san francisco for clinton's fundraiser that was scheduled before her health scare on sunday. that's when she was seen leaving the 9/11 ceremony and stumbling into her van. clinton was diagnosed with pneumonia two days prior. at to nate's event clinton spoke to her supporters via speaker phone. she was originally supposed to attend in person. >> i am following doctors orders to rest up so i can get back on the campaign trail. but i'm gonna do it because we do have so much work still ahead of us. >> i think the biggest news story is hillary clinton is a human being of the i think the bigger news story is how is it possible these guys don't get sycamore often? >> reporter: the
