live from the kgo tv broadcast center this is abc 7 news. >> a twist in a missing persons case. a mother and young daughter from san francisco have been found. but we're learning tonight the search may have had more to do with the investigation of a man well known for being beaten by alameda county sheriff's deputies. i'm matt keller in for eric thomas. abc 7 news reporter alyssa harrington has been following the story all day. she just spoke with family members of the mom and daughter who are relieved they are safe tonight. >> i got off the phone with the mother of dana rinta. she wants to thank everyone who helped search for her daughter and granddaughter. dana rinta and her 1-year-old daughter scarlet were found safe and unharmed. they were reported missing yesterday, the same day fbi agents raided a home in san francisco's visitation valley. they arrested stanislaus petrov who is rinta's ex-boyfriend. you can see him handcuffed led out of the house by the fbi n put in the back of a police car. >> we know at some point in time they were, in their conversation we want to have with her. >> reporter: investigators want to talk to rinta about him. petrov is also seen in this surveillance video. he's suing the sheriff's office after deputies were seen beating him last november. petrov led them on a chase to san francisco in a stolen car. now he's back in custody facing federal prosecution. >> as far as yesterday, that was federal investigation that we partnered with. it involves the fact that mr. petrov is not supposed to be in possession of firearms. >> reporter: i spoke with rinta's mother on the phone. she does not know petrov and he's not scarlet's father. the mother and daughter had last been seen in balboa park. police won't say where they were found. a source says petrov is the suspect in a domestic violence case. the victim is his ex-girlfriend renta. in san francisco, elissa harrington, abc 7 news. the new details from san leandro. police believe someone has gone from shooting out windows to firing at people with a bb gun. dctsives just provided these pictures showing a man holding a bb gun and a car used in the crime. the vandals have also struck in other cities. you can see someone firing a bb gun in this surveillance video captured in january. more than 120 cars have been damaged since december. that adds up to about $60,000 in damage. you can see this video where a window was shot out on east 14th street. new details about a vandal mystery in monterey. karen cummings provided this picture. you can see the head from a statue. a girl found the head in the tide pool at monterey's breakwater cove this afternoon. vandals knocked the statue's head off at the presidio in monterey in october. they also defaced a statue. pope francis canonized sara during his visit. a fire gutted a home in bay point just before 6:00. contra costa fire protection district provided this footage to abc 7. took crews about 40 minutes to put out the fire on lake view drive. a few people are expected to recover after being treat forward smoke inhalation. the fire caused about $300,000 in damage. developing news on the peninsula. cal train trains are not running southbound near center street and millbrae after a train hit and killed a woman earlier tonight. b.a.r.t. is assisting those that were on the train. this isical tran's third fatality this year. a weekend skiing trip didn't happen for a group of students. a photo from the chp facebook page shows their charter bus on fire. this hand along interstate 80. 40 students were evacuated from the bus. some of their luggage was damaged. students were put on a bus back to san francisco. no word on what caused the fire. a group of teens from san francisco's bay view district are talking about a life-changing trip to africa. it's part of operation genesis. a program created by a san francisco police officer who also raised money for it. his mission is to enrich these young people's lives. abc 7's lisa amin gulezian has more. >> reporter: for many it was the first time they'd ever been on a plane or left northern california. >> welcome home. >> reporter: the first to greet this group of tired and weary travelers is san francisco police chief greg sir. this was a trip full of firsts. the first time many used a passport. the first time most have left home. the first time ever truly seeing the world outside of the bay view. san francisco police officer jason johnson started "operation genesis" to give these kids a chance to change and grow. >> i realize they didn't really know about their culture, where they came from. and the struggle that really took place for them to have the opportunity they have. >> reporter: we there were as the teens left their neighborhood for the eight-day long trip. while in ghana they donated supplies to schools gave shoes to kids and spent time in villages. poverty was hard to ignore. >> it's a wake-up call to be grateful for everything. not everybody has it like this. >> some people don't have shoes nice clothes. we had everything and we can't even say hello to one another. >> reporter: a sense of gratitude and community are two things mike l. gregory promises to build once he gets home because life in the bay view can be dark and lonely. >> to not have to walk past someone and i could be interactor smile. usually they take offense to that. i want to bridge that gap. >> reporter: this 16-year-old is starting with his own family and with this african unity bowl. >> when you walk in the house just to show that we're a family and have unity. >> reporter: mike is the youngest of seven and has a brother in prison. he's sure his brother would have made different choices had he gone on this trip. controlled by hosts who break the law and list more than one property. san francisco chronicle reports the site is pledging to remove people who list more than one home for rent. what is old is new again for sports fans in oakland. overstock.com has pulled out of its naming rights deal for the coliseum. abc 7 news was at the coliseum today when the giants visited the a's for a final spring training tune-up. the stadium is no longer known as the o.co coliseum. they'll still do other promotions with the a's. for the time being call it the coliseum or the oakland alameda coliseum. that news reporter cornell barnard has the story you'll see only on abc 7. >> i was in shock. >> reporter: this parent says she never expected to get a call from her son saying he'd been robbed inside a b.a.r.t. station. >> scared. traumatized. >> reporter: her 12-year-old son talks about the chilling armed robbery which happened at the el cerrito del norte station friday about 6:00 p.m. he was coming home from his cousin's house when a man came up from behind and told him to keep walking. >> he put the gun to my waist. i didn't know what it was at first. then i looked down and seen the gun. >> reporter: the man ordered him to keep moving down the station stairway. >> he had to start reaching in my pockets and felt my wallet. >> reporter: the suspect then demanded his backpack. >> did you give him your backpack? >> no. >> what happened? >> i pushed him off of me. >> reporter: the suspect got away. >> where are the police? there's a -- i know there's a police station at the b.a.r.t. station. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. police told us officers patrol station property but are not always inside. police are investigating the robbery and will review any security camera footage. but at this point there are few lead. last january a gunman shot and killed a 19-year-old man on board a b.a.r.t. train in west oakland. some cameras may have been decoys and did not record the crime. a suspect is still at large. meantime this mom is glad her son was not hurt. >> we'll have to find other means of him traveling. >> reporter: mom says no more b.a.r.t. trips for now. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. an update into the case of a missing man from san mateo. michael schafer has been found dead in san francisco. he had been reported missing monday and his family was concerned he did not have his medications. tonight we know a san diego roller derby player died in a freak plane crash on a freeway. a single engine plane landed on its belly on interstate 15 north of san diego and skidded some 250 feet before slamming into the back of a nissan altima. ant net francis isabel was sitting in the back seat of the car and was killed instantly. she and her teammates were parked on the shoulder while the driver adjusted its blue tooth when the plane hit the car. >> pretty nerve-racking seeing the plane coming over the top of me and slide over the road and hit that car. >> the plane's original owner is matt nokes who also briefly played for the giants. he had the plane custom built from a kit. he made an emergency landing in that same place on the same interstate 16 years ago. the plane will be towed to arizona so federal investigators can take a closer look at what happened. a report says the alaska airlines could be close to buying out virgin america. "the wall street journal" reported today alaska airlines has bid $2 billion for virgin. bloomberg sources said jetblue could still outbid alaska and block the purchase. it flies to 2 3 airports in the u.s. and mexico. the deal is expected to face heavy scrutiny from regulators. solving a rubik's cube the most times while also pedaling a unicycle. today a man shattered the old record in fremont. >> president obama held a dinner at the white house to discuss what he might do next. the obama presidential center, museum and library will be built in chicago's south side. passenger flight to the brussels airport are set to resume in the next few hours. the airport has been closed since terrorists detonated two bombs there. the few flights departing will leave from a temporary building. new security will be in place including scanning people and luggage before they can enter the airport. 35 people died in the attacks at the airport and a subway station march 22nd. deltsa airlines announced it will suspend service from brussels to atlanta until next year. they'll continue a flight from jfk as soon as the international terminal fully reopens. it will reaccommodate anyone who has already booked their flights. amazon founder jeff bezos has launched and landed a reusable rocket for the third time. it took off from west texas late this morning. this is video from a previous landing. some day they hope to use the rockets to carry passengers for space tourism. each rocket lasting through 100 launches. the falcon 9 rocket goes much farther and faster reaching orbit orbit. it landed safely on the ground in december but spacex has yet to reland a reusable rocket on a platform. leonardo dicaprio may be banned from indonesia. he made a critical post on instagram after his one-day visit to a protected park in sumatra. the government supports his concern to save ecosystems but can blacklist him if he keeps posting about indonesia on social media. a magazine has apologized to george clooney for running a fabricated article. quotes were picked up from media outlets around the world. clooney said the quotes are not accurate. they said they bought the interview in good faith from an agency. it apologized to clooney and his wife. when fire destroyed a familiarly's home, a little girl lost her most prized possession. thanks to one author who put out the all to that talk to each other to prevent accidents. >> the algorithm the car ahead or behind you is an imminent threat. >> reporter: it will warn you before you rear-end someone. its job is to look three seconds into the future. >> and that is our blind spot warning. >> reporter: what if these cars could also talk to traffic signals. if a driver is about to run a red light. >> could adjust the signal light to stop other cars that maybe don't have that technology from going through the intersection. >> reporter: they installed these boxes at a handful of intersections. if every traffic light could talk to your car it could prevent more than accidents. it could prevent traffic. adjusting lights on the fly when traffic is backed up and when it's not. >> when you are the only car on the road and come up to a light and it is red why doesn't it turn green? now it would be green by the time your car got there. >> reporter: that same display that warns about hazards could tell you about the light you're sitting at. >> you'd know how long the light is going to turn red. >> reporter: they could require these regulators in cars in 2019. they predict it could help traffic. they may sell radio kits
