Michael cuong appeared in a San Francisco courtroom. His case was the first under the new shark fin ban. Some activists who push for the law are not happy dan noise has the investigation dan noyes has the investigation. His family has been in the business since 1906 selling shark fins to restaurants for shark fin soup. What is the source of the shark fin . Can you tell me the source of the shark fin . He has pled not guilty and says they will challenge the ban. They found 2,138 slashing shark fins at the warehouse a full six months after the ban took affect. It is a low he knows very well. My name is michael cuong. I am the fourth generation to be involved in shark fellowship business. He was one of the most vocal opponents appearing at hearings in San Francisco. It is not just Cost Effective to catch sharks. When they catch the shark they will use it. And now he is the first major test of the new law. Charges with four misdemeanors for possession and sale of frozen and processed shark fin and raw shark tail and dried shark fin for display purposes. If you knew what the law is why have all of the shark fins . The fine is 1,000 and six months in jail. Not enough for some activists. We dont think this is right. We think this is grossly under done. The north cal coordinator is worried the punishment can be seen as a cost of doing business. Thousands died for him to have the shark fins in his warehouse. One charge per animal would be a more equitable situation. We are talking thousands of animals. Here is a guy who will get a slap on the wrist for having something illegal. I completely understand their concern. They suspend the charging disetion. You have to look at the legislative intent. The legislative intent is clear and it makes it a misdemeanor offense. There is no way to elevate it to a felony. It is working like we intended it to work. Assemblyman paul fong wrote the shark fin ban and said in addition to the possible penalties he lost his supply of shark fins worth a Million Dollars or more on the black market. I am satisfied with that. The whole intention was to bring awareness of the sharks plight. The need for sharks in our ecosystem. The latest search says at least 100 million sharks died each year for shark fin soup. Often crews lop off the fins and dump them back into the ocean to bleed to death or drowned. Several species of sharks are on the extinction. Sharks are vitally important. They are in every oition ocean in the world and keep the ocean healthy. If we lose them we could have problems with other species down the line. They are waging a campaign to cut the demand for shark fin soup using basketball star yao ming. If you could see how each year 70 million sharks are killed to end up in soup, could you still eat it . It is working. Now in china they say a 50 to 70 reduction in shark fin which is literally millions of sharks, tens of millions of sharks. The Chinese Government has provided spots on prime time tv to run his ads and they banned it from all official dinners.
