You can still see smoke coming off of it. More than six hours after the fire started, and they are keeping their distance. They are worried about that crane that was right in the middle of the fire. They have brought out engineers to assess the integrity of it and figure out how to dismantle it so residents are still evacuated. They are worried about what they lost, but everyone is feeling a bit relieved. No one was hurt. You could feel the heat from this huge fire a couple of blocks away from it. You could see it for miles. The view from sky 7 shows the enormity of it. The cell phone video from witnesses shows the up close intensity. The building on fire was under construction and empty but it has some homes around it. As residents ran from those homes some assumed the worst. I think we lost everything. You think you lost everything. Reporter this fouralarm fire was first reported at 4 30 this morning at valdez and 23rd streets. Oakland firefighters say they had to take a defensive stance against this one because of its size and the threat from the scaffolding and this wildly swinging crane. When the crane takes on that much heat, it starts to spit, so that was one of our Major Concerns fighting this fire. Reporter the crane didnt collapse. But part of the building did. No firefighters were hurt. They whether at a safe distance when this happened. Firefighters and police say they knew it was dire to get the area evacuated as soon as possible. Residents felt their urgency. And the police came banging on the door, and i guess i didnt get up fast enough so they broke the door and said, man, got to get out, got to get out so i wasnt able to give any clothes or anything or my cell phones. Reporter police werent the only ones working on evacuations. Neighbors also helped each other, knocking on doors to wake people up. Those who were sleeping felt very grateful once they reached safety. I dont know whoever that gentleman was, he was going on right screaming saying like, you know, theres a fire, theres a fire which actually helped us. We could actually get a lot of our families out because if one could shout like that, everybody could actually move. That actually helped us a lot. Reporter residents still arent sure exactly what they have lost. They have had to keep their distance, but they say it looks like at least two other residential buildings were damaged in this fire. The firefighters say its going to take a while for them to safely get in there and figure out how much damage was done. In oakland, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. Abc 7 news has learned agents from the atf are now responding to the scene. The Alameda County task force is also there. The Fire Department earlier said that the fire is about 85 contained. Crews are going to remain on the scene putting out hot spots and cautiously watching for more flareups. Abc 7 news two apartment buildings under construction have burned down twice in the past year. Reporter and construction workers knew about that, too, and were here at the site and a lot of them have already left because theres really no job for them to do, and its sad for them to look at all their hard work reduced to rubble. Reporter this raging inferno was a difficult site for construction workers to see. Eight months of their work destroyed. Our boss called us at 5 30 waking us up saying our job fire was on fire and this wasnt a joke and lo and behold it was no joke. Reporter were told this building under construction was about 75 complete. It was supposed to be apartments and retail space. Crews left their gear inside the site by the fire destroyed it all. I lost about 4,000 and all of my tools, everything, yeah. But hopefully insurance takes care of everything. We can only do what we can. Reporter some workers tell us security was heightened around the building because of past fires at construction sites in the east bay. People who live nearby are concerned it was intentionally set. The security was pretty well done, pretty professional and intense. After the fire in emoryville oakland border there, they seemed to have stepped it up having securit cameras that they installed. They had a guard patrolling the perimeter of the building. Reporter at this point fire Officials Say it is too early to tell if this fire is suspicious and an Arson Task Force is here, and they are going to be the ones investigating and trying to determine a cause.
