David . Reporter natasha and reggie, you could see what a large landslide this was. Both lanes of northbound 17 are closed as a result of this rock, debris vegetation, trees, you name it, it is all here now in the two northbound lanes of highway 17. Can you imagine that news van getting slammed by all of that rock . And as a result of that, that came just hours before the beginning of the morning commute. People coming from santa cruz going up toward san jose. Nobody knows exactly what has caused this but of course we know it is all weatherrelated with the all of the rain over the weekend and it is starting to rain again right now so there is very gig concerns about the stability of this hillside. We have chp officer jeff lutz who is right here right now who can give us a better understanding of the job ahead. Just, how much soil and rock has to be cleared here . Is it a big job . So, as you could see, there is different dynamics. We have, if we pan over here, we could see wires, boulders, tree stumps and just a bunch of loose mud and dirt. It is approximately probably 500 to 750 kukcubic yards right now. That is a just a rough estimate. And when you pan up, could see rocks sliding down. It is still an active situation even during the cleanup. How much hours do you think highway 17 will be affected. Right now. Plan through tonight and into tomorrow morning. What about this afternoon commute u. Have single lane traffic using the southbound lanes. Will that tip through the rush hour tonight. As long as we have this closed, we have set up twoway Traffic Control in place to shift the northbound traffic out of Scotts Valley on to the northbound side and as you could see here and that will continue for the duration of the closure, even though there will be delays and traffic is slower, it will bypass highway 17 to santa cruz. Thank you for the live update. Reporter so in the meantime, we could see this area is very unable. Weve been warned by the crews out here to keep an eye on this hillside because there is concern that it is still unable and as were getting a little bit of rain here, there could be more slides. And of course this entire Santa Cruz Mountain area is vulnerable but all of the rain weve had, we are talking about doubledigit rainfall just in the past 24 to 30 hours. We are live on highway 17, david louie, abc 7 news. We want to you stay safe and were so glad that our colleague is recovering this morning. And look at this mudslide in pacifica continuing to affect traffic right now. This sky 7 video over the scene shows traffic down to a single lane along highway 1. The mudslide happened around midnight. Drivers heading to San Francisco are having to take the long way around to avoid the backup. They are taking highway 92 to 280 and then up to the city. Marin county firefighters are investigating after a body was found inside of that car in a rising cream. Person was found submerged east of point rayes and the victim is a man in his 20s. And it is not clear how his car ended up in the water. I want to show you what is going on right now. Were still on storm watch. Even though it looks quiet from our exploratorium cam from pier 15. The Russian River is above flood stage and that has rescue workers busy. Sergio quintana is live for us. Reporter reggie, anyone taking a canoe ride down the Russian River is familiar with burks canoe trips. This is their parking lot. They figure the lot is under five feet of water. A little bit further over here, just beyond the trees, is where their campsite is. He tells me he figures the campsite is under about 20 feet of water. Lets show you some video we shot earlier of a rescue crew from the forestville fire department, they had the rescue raft, and they are being kept busy this morning, one of the first concerns this mornin is for a Sonoma County juvenile detention facility surrounded by water and they have been working to get the young people out of the area. Throughout the morning theyve been responding to miscellaneous calls because this Russian River is pretty swollen. Lets come back out here live. I want to show you just how fast the currents of the river are. As you could see down there, it is rushing very, very quickly. The manager of burks canoe tells me he figures it is going very, very fast right now. Usually a trip down the river would take a few hours if you were on there right now it would take a few minutes. Crews out here will be very, very busy. They expect that the Russian River is actually going to crest at 1 00 this afternoon. So we could still see more of the river coming further off its banks. Live, im sergio quintana. Abc 7 news. Thank you. Pg e crews are working to restore power to more than 5,000 customers throughout the bay area. These are the latest numbers from pg e. Good morning, jesse reggie. This ramp just opened a short time ago and it was closed as investigators gather details in this policeinvolved shooting. Here is a look at the scene from a short time ago. Police cars were on scene gathering evidence and here is what police tell us. So at 11 30 last night chp responded to a vehicle collision on the connector from northbound 101 to northbound 880. Something happened while those officers were handling that traffic stop. And shots were fired. Police say no officer was injured by a suspect was injured and taken to the hospital. Nonlifethreatening injuries. Now investigators immediately closed the nearby ramp and that is where they were most of the morning. We know this black jetta parked here on the ramp, and this time we dont know what role it is playing in the investigation but it was here all morning and overnight. It could be possible evidence. The rear window of that jetta has several holes that look like bullet holes. So just a little while ago, that car was towed away. The ramp is back open. Your full accuweather forecast is next. The storm impact scale, todays storm level is one. That means light rain to keep an um good morning. We want to go back to sky 7. Could you see the Russian River over the next couple of hours will reach its peak for this crest. And you could see it flooding lowlying areas so the worst flooding is over the next hour or two and then it is going to start receding. An the good news is the napa river, you dont have to worry about any flood warnings. Nor will have you to for the Russian River after today. Because when it crests wednesday after our heavy rain tomorrow, it is going to be about two feet lower than what it is cresting at today. So what the damage youre dealing with right now and the flooding in the next couple of hours, that is it for this goaround. Hopefully that will put some ease in you. But that is tomorrow. Look at what is happening right now. So some incredible video right there. As we expected it was going to be with all of that rain we had yesterday, four to five inches across the north bay. Lets talk about what is going on as far as on the Positive Side of all of that wet weather we had. We jumped 126 of average for todays date with the electronic measurements up in the sierra. Some areas received 7 feet of snow over the weekend, above about 9,000 feet. So below that, there was a lot of rain and you know the flooding that occurred because of that. Back here at home, here is a look at roof cam. It is quiet. Umbrella, you might want to have it the next couple of hours of the scattered light showers that will increase in intensity and coverage tonight and moderate to heavy tomorrow with our storm raking us with gusty winds. And a dry pattern waiting until friday. I went to bed last night thinking wednesday is our last day of rain, and woke up this morning and said nah. One more day and then i let you off the hook. The rain is around san martin and scattered around mt. Helena. And you could see right there with live doppler, it is right in the middle of the storm and that is why it looks hard earp than the rain that is actually falling. Temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. And lows in the upper 40s to low 50s tonight but you could see the wet weather coming through. So the storm impact scale today is just a one. But for tomorrow well have light to moderate showers in the morning and then were going to have i didnt mean to advance through that. And then moderate to heavy showers an look at all of the rain coming, possible you up to a inch to two inches maybe three inches in the Santa Cruz Mountains and that is why i think were going to have more floodi flooding tomorrow and more Power Outages and this afternoon the Weather Service is likely to put us under a few flood watches. You guys look the look on your face is like, no were going to do this again. It is not a repeat of yesterday but the ground is so saturated, it cant hold any more. This is not a normal two. Because the ground is so saturated, is that right. Bingo. Damage could be greater than what a two would create because of what happened yesterday. The light at the end of the tunnel is this weekend. So hold on for that. It is a long way away. Thank you, mike. All right. Another season of abc hit series the bachelor has begun and two bay area women have made the first cut.
