The search for survivors this morning in morocco after a major earthquake rattled the region, killing more than 2000 people. The reaction from one bay area family who was there when it struck and it is september 11th, 2023 today, marking 22 years since the deadly terrorist attack on nine divided by 11. Might need the light jacket and a couple of locations this morning. 50s and 60s for the most part away from the coast. Heres future weather as we go hour by hour. Were getting into the 60s. By 9 a. M, well have some patchy cloud cover along the coast. Our marine layer is pretty mixed out right now, so were not expecting any dense fog throughout the day. And as we head into the afternoon, our warmest areas will go into the 90s. We expect a lot of 70s around the bay shoreline. Its a day filled with a lot of sunshine and temperatures, maybe a couple of degrees above average for this time of the year, 70in the city today going to 75. In oakland, 82 in san jose, 88. First of all, there will only be a 20 minute maximum wait for a train. There will be more trains running at night. The wait for a train on the yellow will only be 10 to 15 minutes on weekdays and more trains will run to sfo. Now we know that more people are traveling on the weekends and in the evenings, so weve increased the service by 50 on evenings and weekends and night was the last time the old style bart trains were running in the system. So theyll only be used on rare occasions, trains. And by the way, today is barts 51st anniversary, and thats why theyre rolling out these new changes today. And just this weekend , the medical examiner identified the remains of two more people, 40 of those lost are still unidentified. The testing of remains all these years later is part of a pledge so that the families of as many victims as possible can have closure. 341 members of the new York Fire Department have now died from ground zero related illnesses. It was a dream moroccan vacation for my friends. The garnet Hunter Family from marin and San Francisco. But their last day visiting marrakesh was truly unforgettable. This was the terrifying moment, the 6. 8 magnitude quake struck morocco late friday night. It was the scariest earthquake ive ever lived through. Christina garnet and daughter natalie say they feared their three story hotel would collapse. Me and my mom are just looking at each other and then suddenly were like, we got to run to the door because weve been training for this. Our whole lives. Were from San Francisco. Weve lived through earthquakes and we know about earthquakes. But theres still a few seconds where youre like kind of in disbelief. Many ran for safety from homes and restaurants. The epicenter about 45 miles south of marrakesh, the heaviest damage in moroccos atlas mountains. The family capturing these images of quake debris in the old medina section of marrakesh. We evacuated after about 15, 20 minutes. Our host made us leave and we walked to the main square where there were hundreds of people gathered. Heres what they saw. The next morning we walked through town and the bakers chimney had fallen off and we had talked to him the night before and he was trying to get bread out to the community, trying to feed people. Amid the tragedy and rising death toll, the family says theres hope and resilience. So its just this Amazing Community spirit that really struck us. It was just it it was wonderful. They were just going to keep going. The family has now traveled out of morocco but hope to return soon. We just want to send a lot of love and support to the people of morocco. Mount kilauea is erupting again just three months after it last spewed lava. And you can see it shooting into the air. This all happening overnight. Geologists say there isnt an immediate threat, but the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has raised the alert level to a warning as they assess potential hazard. They say strong winds send particles flying to further distances, which if people are exposed to, can cause skin and eye irritation. Hurricane lee churning in the Atlantic Ocean is expected to ramp back up after it weakened yesterday to a category two storm. The National Hurricane center says its expected to strengthen to a category four today. Now its still too early to know how significant the hurricanes impact is going to be on the northeast. But for now , the east coast is being warned about large swells and rip currents drew. Were watching the storm very closely, the track especially. But of course, those rip currents are the immediate concern along a lot of the beaches across the east coast for us. The week ahead, it is going to be a very quiet pattern.
