Deadly terror group isis. Another american recruited by them and killed while fighting with their forces in syria. So how Many Americans are they and what are their goals . Abcs chief investigative correspondent brian ross is back on this case for us again tonight. Brian . Reporter the american citizen reported killed is precisely the sort of isis recruit that authorities have worried would gladly sacrifice himself for his jihad i cause whether there or here. He grew up in minnesota and went to college in san diego. On his facebook page, 33yearold Douglas Mcarthur mccain hardly appeared to be a dangerous jihadist. His likes included pizza hut, the Chicago Bulls and the koran. Tonight the white house confirmed that mccain had been killed in syria bhiwhile fighti for the brutal terror group isis. In a twitter message earlier this year, mccain who converted to islam a decade ago, wrote stand strong, we will soon be one. A cousin said today mccain may have lost his way. I felt like he may have lost his identity because all of this is not him. Reporter an estimated 100 americans have been recruited to fight for jihadist groups in syria, including isis. Im feeling like im still dreaming. Im thinking like im in a dream world. Reporter earlier this summer the syrian Al Qaeda Group said an american from florida carried out a suicide bomb attack for them and left behind this threatening video for fellow americans. You think you are safe. You are not safe. Reporter as brutal and outrageous as the killing of american journalist james foley was, isis presents an even greater threat to the u. S. They may have again a place to organize a major attack on the united states. Thats very serious. Reporter there was no news about the fate of american journalist Steve Sotloff and two others including a young female aid worker. President obama issued his own word to those responsible in isis. America does not forget. Our reach is long. We are patient. Justice will be done. Reporter but the president went on to say that going after and rooting out isis wont be easy and wont be quick, diane. He said our reach is long. Thank you, brian. As you know, the president saying it wont be easy or quick. Today we learned he is taking action and sending spy planes, drones, to fly surveillance over syria at his command. What does this mean . Abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz at her post tonight. Martha, how big is this . Reporter approving surveillance flights does not mean that air strikes in syria are a certainty. What is certain tonight is that the pentagon is preparing options for air strikes. To do that, they need to pinpoint where isis has weapons using drones. They look for Training Camps and especially to track the movement of convoys and supplies back and forth from iraq. Today there were more air strikes inside iraq. It may sound like Mission Creep to people if the u. S. Decides to conduct air strikes in syria, but the execution of james foley made u. S. Officials and the American Public realize just how great the threat is from isis, diane. Martha, while i have you i want to turn to another part of that region. Lets go to gaza. Theres word after all these weeks of fighting that theres a ceasefire and a different kind of ceasefire . Reporter indeed this comes after seven weeks of conflict, more than 2,000 palestinian deaths, the destruction of thousands of homes and buildings in gaza, and the death advertise of 64 Israeli Soldiers and five sieve yans. The longterm ceasefire eases some restrictions on travel in gaza and will allow humanitarian aid, but it falls far short of addressing longterm issues, diane but it is welcome news all the time. Martha raddatz, reporting in from washington, thank you, martha. Now we go to the deadly Ebola Outbreak and a new warning from one of the nations top doctors, the head of the cdc, warning that the outbreak in africa is even worse than we feared. Abcs own chief medical editor, dr. Richard besser is right there on the front lines of an epidemic. Reporter tonight, the head of the cdc, traveling in liberia, announced the world is losing the fight against ebola. And standing in the pouring rain outside one clinic, we could see why, as we witnessed something truly terrifying. These men, in headtotoe protective gear, heaving the body of one victim, still highly contagious, into a flatbed truck, piled high with others. Immediately afterwards, spraying him down with bleach. Patients, through the window, watching it all. This is incredible. Seeing a truck cart away 10 bodies of people who died from ebola. I cant imagine what someone is thinking who has arrived there for treatment chblth. Its the gates of hell going into that treatment ward and knowing that the odds are that youre going to come out in a body bag. So many doctors and nurses themselves have become victims. Losing those healthcare workers, just devastating. In the ebola zone, even before the outbreak, only one doctor for every 100,000 people. Whats your biggest worry now . The loss of lives of health care workers. Im really concerned about that. Reporter we saw for ourselves the lack of protective equipment. Hes totally covered up going into the ebola ward. The final part is putting this hood on. But, they dont have hoods that are ready made so theyre making hoods out of other protective equipment. The clinic opened just nine days ago, but its already overflowing. Were going into the triage unit here at jfk hospital. Theyre assessed to see could they have ebola and if they are, theyre put into isolation. I spoke with the nurses risking their lives every day. The government estimates up to 75 of deaths have been women in part because they are the primary care givers. Do you worry that you could get ebola . Sometimes its scary but you have to help out. Reporter here amid the darkness, a glimmer of hope, this woman seemingly cured. How do you feel today . Im okay. Jumping. When can you go home . Now reporter shes one of the lucky few. More than 1400 lives already lost to ebola. With no end in sight. The signs were seeing here are not good. Ebola seems to be winning this battle. Hopefully the world will send the resources that are so desperately needed. Diane . People with so much fear and so much courage. Thank you, rich, for being there for us tonight. And back here at home now tonight with just days to go before the big Holiday Weekend we are tracking dueling hurricanes, one in the east, one in the west. And abcs meteorologist ginger zee right here to tell us what to expect. Lets get straight to the stunning image. We have to start in the west. That would be hurricane marie. You can see it here, the picture showing that category two hurricane, max sustained winds of 100 miles per hour. It will weaken and it still is some 800plus miles from shore, but were already seeing large swells. Off malibu today a surfer died. The rescuers there trying to get him in. Even though it does stay offshore, does not affect land, the waves could kick up this week to 25 feet so its not just today but through friday and early saturday. And its not just the pacific. Its the atlantic. Weve got cristobal out there. Dangerous rip currents from georgia to maine. Mial ma matter, the first day of school, the students getting a lesson from flash flooding. Tonight an american original is under fire, burger king, home of the whopper, accused of doing something a lot of americans question, defecting heading north of the border to canada and saving a lot of tax money. So whats the truth of what theyre doing . Abcs chief Business CorrespondentRebecca Jarvis tracked down the ceo with the questions tonight. Reporter burger king, a Company Founded in 1957 in miami will now combine with canadian donut giant tim hortons, becoming the worlds Third LargestFast Food Company with more than 18,000 restaurants worldwide. Why is burger king doing this . Sales havent been great. Sales have been flat over the last couple of years and tim hort tons is the biggest coffee player in canada. 7 reporter but theyll also pay lower taxes, a point we pressed today with bks 34 yearold ceo. How much over the next ten years does burger king expect to save on its taxes . Tax wasnt really the driver from this deal. Reporter burger king makes about 1 billion a year in sales. Analysts say by moving to canada it could save as much as 50 million on taxes. The u. S. Has the highest Corporate Tax rate in the world, 39 . Canadas . Just 26 . Burger king like Many Companies pays below the u. S. Rate, but moving to canada it gets an even better deal. The term tax inversion has come up a lot. Basically a company in the u. S. Shifting their tax base overseas. Reporter americans outraged online. The president earlier this summer criticized companies for relocating. My attitude is i dont care if its legal. Its wrong. Reporter fearing backlash, drugstore chain walgreens recently walked away from a similar deal to move overseas. But helping finance this deal, billionaire investor and friend of the white house, warren buffett, who famously complained that billionaires shouldnt pay lower taxes than average americans. But this is not just about burger king. Weve seen a sizable increase in u. S. Companies relocating to foreign addresses to save on their taxes, and it comes at a price. It could cost the u. S. As much as 19 billion, diane, over ten years if this continues to happen. And its firing up the social media tonight. Thanks so much, rebecca. And we want you to know that tomorrow night right here david muir has an all new made in america investigation. China churning out products that look just like those made here at home down to the packaging and how American Companies are fighting back. Now to the passenger plane forced to land because of a midair fight in the cabin. Two passengers battling in their seats over leg room and that tiny but precious amount of space for the hours ahead. Abcs david kerley shows us what caused the trouble. Reporter it all began on a flight from newark to denver in economy plus, where you pay for some extra room. The woman in 11b couldnt recline because a man behind her in 12b put a 22 piece of plastic on the seatback to keep her seat from reclining. A source tells abc news the man refused to move the gadget, so the woman stood up and threw a cup of water in his face. A faceoff that prompted a landing in chicago. Both passengers were removed from the aircraft but not charged. The man was using these. Theyre called the knee defenders. On this flight, we enlisted rick to help us show the frustration when somebody brings their seat back very quickly. Thats where these knee defenders come in. You just slide them onto the tray and they sit right in there and when rick tries to bring his seat back again, it wont come back. The problem is the airlines dont allow the use of the knee defenders. Knee defenders arent about getting more space. Reporter he should know, he invented the gadget. The idea is to let the person in front of you know that youre back there. Reporter this as the flight is more and more crowded and there is less room. Look at the incredibly shrinking cabin. Carriers are squeezing your leg room. A couple of decades ago, 34 inches in coach. Down now to 32 or 30 inches. Some low fair operators have even cut that to 28 inches, all to squeeze in another row. This is all about profit. The problem is, we as passengers suffer. Reporter already squeezed. But look at this concept seat. You would be nearly standing up on your flight of the future. David kerley, abc news, new york. And up next right here tonight, risky car rides, the warning and how to avoid getting behind the wheel of a vehicle that shouldnt be on the road. All these flood cars left at an airport in long island disappeared and the big question, where did they go . Flood cars literally rot from the inside out. It said something about a flood on it, like a glitch or mistake but auto check everything is clean. You think that the flood is a glitch . Yeah. Its not because everything is clean on it. The title, everything is clean on it. Reporter the car that abc bought was checked out by a mechanic. Thats definitely water driven, theres no doubt about that. Thats like fine silt.
