U. S. Government said Airline Security should be on the lookout for explosives concealed inside shoes and cosmetics. The details are still streaming in, and abcs senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas brings us up to date on the very latest right now. Reporter tonight, Homeland Security officials are warning airlines that explosives hidden in shoes and other improvised bombs are an active, ongoing threat. Abc news has learned a new bulletin warns that terrorists are building shoe bombs, designing liquid explosives and explosives hidden in cosmetic containers to target commercial International Flights. No specific plot has been identified, but the new intelligence, developed from credible overseas sources, suggest that the terrorist bomb makers are fixated on these efforts. It certainly tells that you al qaeda is still fascinated with taking down planes. Recently had a toothpaste scare, now were going back to shoes. Reporter the new threat comes only two weeks after authorities warned of explosives hidden in toothpaste containers for flights headed to the sochi winter olympics. The new concerns over shoe bombs arise roughly 12 years after richard reed was caught on board a u. S. Bound International Flight trying to light his shoes. The shoe bomb containing a powerful plastic explosive could have taken down a plane carrying 197 people. Heres the damage it could have caused. The incident changed Airline Security forever. And to this day, when u. S. Passengers go to the airport, they almost always have to take off share shtheir shoes so they xrayed. But only weeks ago, Congress Held hearings on whether tsas continued concern was overkill. Everything weve done is in reaction. Take off your shoes, that was the liquids. Its all reactive. Pretty soon well be going through naked. Given the inconvenience there, do you think were going to see heightened security tomorrow morning . Reporter sources are telling me, look, they will do business as usual, but you may see additional security because Law Enforcement officials want to show have a sign of force that they are taking this very seriously. Seriously, but again, ranking it in terms of the intelligence, the specificity of the intelligence . Reporter right. This came from credible sources and they wanted to get this out to airlines as quickly as possible and to the tsa so everyone would be on notice that the terrorists are still thinking about these plans to take planes out of the sky. All right, Pierre Thomas reporting in again, our Justice Department correspondent. And now, we want to take you into the heart of chaos in ukraine. Chaos which could force international action, even by the u. S. Tonight, a city is in ruins, seen from above and a bloody battle is playing out on the ground, amid reports of a truce coming in tonight. Abcs chief Foreign Correspondent terry moran is right there. Terry . Reporter diane, that truce was announced by the ukrainian president late tonight. One day after he sent Security Forces into the square behind me, touching off a bloody battle. Theyre still out there. The fires are still burning. And tonight, there is no sign of a ceasefire. All day today and into the night, downtown kiev smoldered and burned. This city, and the world, still shaken by the terrible scenes that flashed from here yesterday. Protesters shot down. Police lines aflame. The dead lying in the streets. But this afternoon, when we clambered over the barricades, into the central square, we found thousands of ordinary ukrainians gathered again, young and old, men and women, undeterred, undaunted. They say they want freedom and democracy. This is the last war. This is the last chance for us. If not, we will fall down. Everything everything will be broken. Reporter at stake in this bitter struggle, will this country of 46 Million People turn west toward the u. S. And europe and democracy or turn east to Vladimir Putin and russia, which ruled here for centuries . President yanukovych, elected in 2010, but who now stands accused by opponents of massive corruption and of unleashing secret police on protesters he chose moscow. The u. S. Is pushing back. There will be consequences if people step over the line. And that includes making sure that the Ukrainian Military does not step in to what should be a set of issues that can be resolved by civilians. Reporter here in kiev, they are bracing for the worst. This is the front line. On this side, the protesters. On the other side, just 100 feet away or so, the police. And they are armed for battle here with their weapon of choice the stones, theyve torn from the pavement. Everyone pitches in out here. There is plenty of food, handmade sandwiches brought from home. And the beautiful cathedral of st. Michael, a makeshift hospital now, treating the wounded. Morale on the barricades is still high. As dusk drew down, they rose and sang ukraines national about anthem. The words of the cohorus, souls and bodies, we will lay down, all for our freedom. They mean it. This is a nation on a knifes edge, looking over into an abyss of possible civil war. And the question about that truce is, can it hold . The protesters are demanding new elections. The president is refusing. And the bloodshed has radicalized both sides. Diane . Terry moran reporting from the center of the story tonight. Thank you so much, terry. And now back here at home. Right there, you can see it sliding off the tops of the buildings as it melts, crashing to the streets and sidewalks below. Chicagoans dodging the same. And the northeast, starting the day with one more blast of winter before the thaw. In pennsylvania, a scene weve seen too often this winter. A pileup on the highway near state college. Freezing rain forcing an unfortunate scrapbook of winter wrecks. From the bus sent skidding outside pittsburgh, to a snowy flip in massachusetts today. So, before we celebrate that brief touch of spring, the reality of a fast melt. Collapsing roofs. This one killing two cows inside a massachusetts barn. And instifli inin ining floodin. Almost a third of our nation is covered in that rapidly melting snow. Add a few inches of rain, and it could be trouble. And as it rains here in new york city, the major flood threat is west of us. Look at the seven states, at least tonight, that have a flood watch in effect. Thats, of course, the rainfall and all that snow. And then youve got severe weather. That would be tonights threat that youre seeing there, eastern kansas, southwest missouri, but it really explodes into our thursday afternoon and evening.
