good evening. diane has the evening off. thanks for spending part of your holiday with us. we start with that american pastime on the 4th going terribly wrong in towns across america, an estimated 14,000 fireworks show. this one north of los angeles, suddenly turning terrifying. when a platform collapses, the fireworks, the rockets, shooting straight at the families in the crowd. >> oh, oh, my god! run! >> it is just incredible to listen to. thousands who had gathered running for cover, tripping, running over one another. that then led to a frantic effort to help dozens injured in the madness. abc's nick watt from the scene on how this happened and late word on the injured. >> reporter: those 4th of july high spirits, in the blink of an eye, turned to terror. >> oh, whoa! oh, my god! whoa, whoa, run, run! >> reporter: fireworks weren't exploding in the sky, they were shooting straight at the crowd, hitting spectators like shrapnel. >> a block of wood about this big, came shooting down and it hit the side of my leg. >> reporter: firefighters and medics immediately on the scene. 36 people injured. the youngest, 17 months old. the oldest, 71 years old. one teen was transferred to a specialist burn unit. >> i think it's a miracle nobody got killed. >> reporter: investigators say one device detonated prematurely, setting off a chain reaction, a domino effect, tipping over other fireworks, which fired directly into the crowd of spectators 350 feet away. >> a big round cylinder block hit the person sitting next to me. >> i think it's getting too extreme. it used to just pop. and we'd have a good time. but now it's like extreme. >> reporter: last night's disastrous display was staged by bay fireworks out of bethpage, new york. they've worked in the past with the new york mets, the republican national convention and nasa. in a statement today, bay fireworks says it "deeply regrets" the accident and the injuries and will carry out a "thorough and complete investigation and make our findings available to the public." this is where many spectators were sitting. some suffered burns, others were hit by projectiles like this, a chunk of charred wood with a nail sticking out of it. others trampled in the panic. 12 children injured. all of them are fine tonight, david. just two adults remain in the hospital. >> all right, that's the good news. abc's nick watt leading us off tonight. thank you. frightening picture here in america and now to the other arresting image today. this one playing out overseas. frightening scenes out of egypt tonight. supporters of the ousted president mohamed morsi facing off against the military. things turn chaotic. soldiers firing shots into the crowd of presidential supporters. as the day wore on, fires breaking out all over the city. tonight our coverage of the crisis in egypt as we ask, could this now lead to all-ought civil war? alex marquardt is live for us in cairo again tonight. alex, good evening. >> reporter: good evening. it was a tense day her in egypt that erupted tonight. that anger against the military for ousting the country's first democratically elected president turned deadly. battles in the streets of cairo tonight. supporters and opponents of the deposed president exchanging gunfire, rocks, and molotov cocktails. the army eventually arrived, but here and in clashes elsewhere, at least 30 people were reported killed. dozens more wounded. in one city far from cairo, the army opened fire as supporters of mohamed morsi prayed, sending them running for their lives. it was a day mohamed morsi's supporters dubbed the "friday of rejection," rejecting the military takeover. earlier, an angry crowd surged toward the military compound they say is holding morsi, who has not been seen publically since his arrest wednesday night. "hit me here, hit me here," this man shouted at soldiers. then shots rang out. three were killed. hundreds of thousands of morsi's furious supporters turned out across egypt today. >> we elected him and we want him back. morsi is still my president, morsi is still my president. >> this wire that separates hundreds of armed soldiers from these thousands of morsi supporters. the clerics are trying to keep them calm. things could change very quickly. the spiritual head of the muslim brotherhood, morsi's party, told supporters to be willing to sacrifice themselves for morsi. >> people are not going to go. they are surrounding the republican guard's headquarters until the president is handed over to them, and they will take the president back into the presidential palace. >> reporter: neither side is showing signs of backing down and that could have ripple effects well beyond egypt. some two million barrels of oil pass through the suez canal every day. and the violence there has driven up prices 7% this week, which could soon be felt at the pump. >> a key american allee lie and soon to be felt at the pump as you point out. alex, thank you. meantime back here at home tonight and to what could a pivotal day in the trial of neighborhood watchman george zimmerman, accused of murdering trayvon martin. martin's mother taking the stand, saying the voice screaming for help was her son. the prosecution resting its case and then right afterwards, the defense demanding an acquittal. what did the judge do? abc's matt gutman is in sanford, florida, at the zimmerman trial again for us tonight. >> reporter: it was the emotional crescendo of two weeks of testimony. >> so you think he's yelling help? >> yes. >> reporter: two mothers on the stand. each claiming to hear their own son in these screams. the grieving mother of trayvon martin. >> who do you recognize that to be? >> trayvon benjamin martin. >> reporter: and george zimmerman's mother? >> who's voice that was? >> my son george. >> it symbolized two weeks of seesaw proceedings, the prosecution beginning its case with a head-snapping opening statement. >> [ bleep ] punks. these [ bleep ] always get away. >> reporter: prosecutors hammering at zimmerman's credibility, catching him in inconsistencies. >> there were two people involved here, one of them's dead. one of them's a liar. >> reporter: but the prosecution's case undercut by several of its own witnesses whose testimony appeared to help the defense. the eyewitness who saw martin on top of zimmerman that night. >> he was the one who was raining blows down on the person on the bottom, george zimmerman, right? >> that's what it looked like. >> reporter: the lead investigator called by the prosecution saying he believed zimmerman's inconsistencies were minimal. >> is there anything else in this case where you got the insight he might be a pathological liar? >> no. >> reporter: and the medical examiner whose testimony today contradicted earlier statements he'd made about the case. after the prosecution wrapped, the defense said the case is so weak, they demanded the judge throw it out. >> what is before the court is an enormous amount of information that my client acted in necessary self-defense. >> reporter: the defense says they could wrap their case by the middle of next week. the big question, will zimmerman take the stand? he's the only person to have seen the start of the fight and its end. i spoke to his attorney mark o'mara, he said it's not likely. >> matt gutman, tonight, thank you. now to the economy this evening and to the new jobs numbers that are getting a lot of attention this evening. american employers creating nearly 200,000 jobs last month. and new jobs for april and may were revised upward as well. what do the numbers really mean? is it a real recovery, and if so, why are mortgage rates and rates you pay on your car suddenly going up? here's our chief business and economics correspondent rebecca jarvis tonight. >> reporter: it's a new and welcome sign in store windows across america, we're hiring. the labor department reporting today our economy has created nearly 200,000 jobs a month not just this month, but for three straight months. good news for jobseekers, but a challenge for home buyers. lisa handler is racing to buy a home for her family in atlanta, hoping to lock in record-low rates. >> we've been looking for a few months now. >> reporter: but since starting her search, rates have already climbed almost a full point. the average 30-year mortgage now 4.4%. that's because as the economy does better and better, interest rates rise. >> we were taking our time, and now we're kind of under the gun. >> in real terms, these small moves mean big increases in the cost of owning a home. for handler, the recent jump means her family will pay $200 a month more on the mortgage. >> there's been a deluge of people rushing to lock into the rate. >> reporter: the price we pay for an economy on the mend. if you're wondering what all this means for your retirement savings. there is some good news, david. after a day of a lot of volatility, the dow ended higher by 147 points. >> actually welcoming the news. rebecca, great to see you. turning now to the terrifying accident we reported on earlier this week, the families on vacation, their children parasailing when their daughters were suddenly caught by the wind, slamming them into a building. aditi roy tonight with what we're now learning from their hospital rooms. >> she's received a severe brain trauma. >> reporter: the parents of two indiana teenagers spoke publicly for the first time about the parasailing accident that critically injured 17-year-old alexis fairchild and sidney good. the two were parasailing while on vacation in panama beach, florida, when their line snapped. strong winds hurled the girls into two buildings. the company, aquatic adventures, says that while they adhere to best practices to minimize risks, sudden weather conditions can occur. sidney is on a ventilator, can only move her arms and legs, while alexis has been able to walk to her friend's room. there's no federal regulation of the parasailing industry, and in florida, all you need is a safe vessel and captain's license. >> i wouldn't put my children in a harness operated by an operator here in the state of florida until we have these safety requirements. >> reporter: florida state senator maria sachs has been fighting for safety regulations. there have been 429 serious injuries and 73 fatalities involved in parasailing over the last three decades in the u.s. back in indiana, friends and family of sidney and alexis write messages of support, waiting for the girls to come home. aditi roy, abc news, new york. >> aditi, thank you. now to the case of the missing little girl. a case that made global headlines. now back in the news tonight. so many of you likely remember the image of 3-year-old madeleine mccann who vanished from a room with her siblings on a family vacation six years ago. her parents tearfully pleading for help, saying they didn't do it. tonight a glimmer of hope for those parents. here's lama hasan. >> reporter: renewed hope tonight, madeleine could be alive after a mom and dad's crusade six years in the making that began with every parent's nightmare. >> we beg you to let madeleine to come home. >> reporter: that desperate plea to find their 4-year-old who went missing from her room at this portuguese resort during a family vacation. kate and jerry mccann became prime suspects. after they were cleared, they were still blamed for leaving their kids alone while dining 150 feet away. >> no one will ever feel more guilty than us for the fact that we were not with madeleine. >> reporter: but the mccanns never gave up, making sure that the world would never forget maddy's face. starting a massive media campaign with help from david beckham -- >> if you have seen this little girl -- >> reporter: -- to j.k. rowling offering a reward -- to the pope's blessing madeleine's picture. finally, persuading the british prime minister, david cameron, to open a multimillion dollar review of her case, leading to an official investigation by scotland yard. that's the most significant and dramatic development in the search for little madeleine since the portuguese investigation was closed in 2008 -- all because of her parents' relentless efforts. david? here's abc's gio benitez. >> reporter: 6-year-old ava and her mother shauna hadden have been stuck in brazil for more than a month. the mom, who has full custody of ava in massachusetts, says her ex-husband paid for their tickets to visit him in brazil. but she says it was all a trick. within days of their arrival, he took hadden to court and brazilian authorities came and confiscated their american passports. hadden says her ex is trying to keep ava in brazil. >> when are you supposed to get those passports back?
