With the cure. Now theyre meeting for the first time. They are the Perfect Match. And good evening. David is off tonight. Im dan harris. The fire captain in the city of napa, california, says it was the worst shaking he has ever experienced. The quake hit in the dead of night setting off raging fires like this one sending bottles flying off the shelves in the heart of wine country and damaging Historic Buildings in downtown napa, which is a mecca for tourists. In fact, you could see some of them wandering through the streets in their bathrobes after being jolted so rudely out of bed. And look at this surveillance video. Cameras rolling during the quake itself. Vehicles shaking as debris falls all around, and there it is on the map, the magnitude 6. 0 quake hitting just north of San Francisco. The governor has declared a state of emergency tonight, and we have Team Coverage of the napa valley earthquake starting with abcs ryan owens right there in napa tonight. Ryan, good evening. Reporter good evening to you, dan. Apocalyptic, that may be the best word to describe the scene behind me. Would you look at these mobile homes or whats left of them. They were simply incinerated when all of that shaking snapped some gas lines, and this is just some of the damage done by that quake in the middle of the night. Earthquake. Its an earthquake. Reporter 3 20 a. M. , a powerful quake jolts tens of thousands right out of bed. The 6. 0 is the strongest to hit Northern California in more than two decades. This family just trying to make sure everyone is okay. That was a strong earthquake. Reporter dozens of buildings in napas Historic Downtown are damaged. An entire wall of this threestory building gone. And roads ripped apart and buckled. The quake also ruptured gas lines causing these mobile homes to explode in flames. Four of them destroyed. Another two with major damage. I felt the earthquake, and i looked out of my front window immediately, and i saw flames. Fire just exploded just in a matter of a couple minutes. It just erupted. It was frightening. It was terrifying. Reporter the earthquake also broke water mains, which made fighting the fires futile. With no water to douse them, firefighters could do little more than watch the homes burn. We did have a major water main break just outside the mobile home park, and we which really complicated the firefight. It did certainly make things a little bit more difficult for us. Reporter the firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading, but for these residents, it was just too late. The earth moved. The house moved. We didnt really know what happened. The house was already on fire, and it was hard to get out. It was really scary. I feel like we lost everything. Yeah, we lost everything. But were not everything. Not everything, honey. Reporter but at least they arent hurt. 172 people were treated at the local hospital. Most with cuts and bruises but a few patients have more serious injuries including a child hit by a piece of a crumbling chimney. Approximately 20,000 people here still do not have power tonight. That number has been improving throughout the day, but restoring water, that is a different story, dan. Some of these residents have been told by city officials they may be without water here for up to a week. Not a pleasant thing to hear. We are thinking about that child, of course, tonight, the child injured. Ryan, thank you. Napa valley is, as we said, the center of californias Wine Industry heavily populated and a mecca for honeymooners and wine connoisseurs and tonight theyre only beginning to take stock of the damage and abcs Neal Karlinsky is on that part of the story. Neal, good evening to you. Reporter dan, good evening. This is the hardest hit part of downtown napa. Take a look. That was a law office up there, and the roof, in fact, is still teetering right now. Underneath you can see carpe diem, that was a restaurant that was heavily damaged. In fact, all the way down this block here, a number of businesses heavily damaged and Officials Say its just lucky that no one was inside when all of this was coming down. The quake struck right in the heart of a city that prides itself as one of the most pristine, sought after destinations in all of california. Theres a place over by the allegria, the back, the terracotta is falling off. Reporter tourists, some of whom have traveled from overseas to be here, were left out on the streets. Its the commonsense side. Please stay away from the buildings that look like theyre leaning. Reporter the downtown area lined with cherished turn of the century buildings like the goodman library, its bricks falling onto the sidewalk. A nearby Department Store still trying to assess the damage. They said that it was not a priority, but the building, if this keeps up, the building is going to collapse. Reporter just yesterday thousands of tourists filled downtown for a music and food festival. Today, hotels are cleaning up. The glass from the mirrors came and put shards and fragments everywhere, and so any time i tried to move, i got glass in my feet. Reporter for many, napa means one thing, wine. By late this morning, pictures began to emerge, piles of bottles, many several hundred dollars each, tossed around like garbage. At the signorello winery, they managed to escape the quake mostly unscathed, but their entire 2014 vintage sits in these tanks, and without power soon, it could all be ruined. Were going to try to get a generator. It would be nice to have power some point today. Tomorrow could be too late. Reporter city officials meanwhile were busy red tagging at least 15 buildings now believed to be unsafe. They say the impact here could have been so much worse. As bad as it is, if people had been working down here and this had happened during the day, wed have a different scenario. Reporter life has in some ways already begun to return to normal around here. In fact, just a block from all this, restaurants and businesses are now open. Schools throughout the area, though, will be closed tomorrow as officials inspect those buildings to make sure theyre safe. Dan . And, as you said, it could have been a lot worse. Neal karlinsky, thank you. This earthquake comes after a quarter century of relative seismological quiet in this part of california, and there are now worries that it might be a sign of bad things to come. Heres abcs bazi kanani on the science of this quake. Reporter the earthquake jolting Northern California today struck more than six miles beneath the earths surface somewhere between these two fault lines, the Hayward Rodgers and the concord green. This type of quake called a strike slip when two parts of the earths crust slide sideways against each other. This morning, californias Early Warning system gave scientists in berkeley this tensecond warning before the quake. Theyre still just testing the system but hoping that one day everyone could get this critical alert. The last such major quake in Northern California 25 years ago when the 7. 1 loma prieta quake brought down part of the San Francisco bay bridge. Just five months ago, a 5. 1 quake near los angeles shook shelves, triggered a rock slide and burst water mains. Nearly all of california in the danger zone for a big one. In fact, Scientists Say the state has a 99 chance of a quake 6. 7 magnitude or greater in the next 30 years. The 1994 northridge earthquake that killed nearly 60 and injured 5,000 was a 6. 7. Researchers now using simulators like this fake trembler to test how earthquakeresistant construction stands up to a quake that size. Seismologists are warning people in Northern California about the danger of aftershocks. At least 55 of them recorded already, and theres still up to a 10 chance that todays quake could be a foreshock meaning an even bigger quake could come within a week. Dan. Not what people in that part of the world want to hear. Bazi, thank you. And a reminder, stay with abc news. Well have much more on the napa valley earthquake on gma in the morning. On world news tomorrow night and, of course, 24 7 on abcnews. Com. But we move on now to breaking news from the middle east. An american held for two years by a terror group in syria is free tonight. Its going to require a comprehensive approach to strike isis throughout the entire network of its organization. On top of the president s agenda back in washington, a big decision about whether to expand air strikes to targets in syria. That could also mean dangerous rip currents from Virginia Beach down to miami. Jason nicholas, thank you. Reporter in a week infected by some pretty grownup news hands up, dont shoot. Reporter players like 13yearold mone davis offered a refreshing distraction. Its over. Reporter the first girl ever to throw a shutout, hurling that 70mileperhour fastball. Were going to be friends forever. Reporter then there were coaches like dave balisle reminding us all whats most important. Theres no disappointment in your effort, in the whole tournament, in the whole season.
