Tonight, plummeting soon after takeoff, slamming into an suv and power lines on its way down. Five Fraternity Members facing charges tonight in the alcohol Poisoning Death of an underage frat brother. Authorities say the 19yearold freshman drank himself to death. The new message from isis tonight, confirming al baghdadi is dead, naming a new leader, and their words for the u. S. Just as tonight, those new images of u. S. Troops now arriving in syria. Martha raddatz on the syrian border. News on the missing 14yearold girl tonight found alive and what weve now learned about the alleged kidnapper. New charges tonight involving actor cuba gooding jr. , allegations of misconduct and the video obtained by tmz inside a nightclub. What is seen in the video. And the nationals pull it off. Good evening and we are just back from california tonight, and well get to the new fires now burning in just a moment. But first, that historic vote on capitol hill today. The full vote in the house on an impeachment resolution, a path forward. It did pass along party lines. And part of this new path, public hearings now playing out on television. The democrats saying they had no choice. Speaker pelosi saying, quote, what is at stake is our democracy. Republicans tonight calling it a sham, to overturn the will of the people in the 2016 election. And all of it came as yet another witness from inside the white house testified behind closed doors today. So, tonight, republicans who, until now, had argued against the process, who said it shouldnt be behind closed doors, now that much of it will now be made public, our mary bruce asks not about the process, instead asking, will you defend the president , will you defend that call with the president of ukraine . Mary bruce leads us off. Reporter today, history in the house. What is at stake is our democracy. What are we fighting for . Defending our democracy for the people. Reporter its only happened three times before. The house voting on the impeachment inquiry of a sitting president. The vote exposing a bitter party divide. All but two democrats voting to move forward, confident they have enough evidence to launch public hearings. No one is above the law. We will continue to conduct this inquiry with the seriousness of purpose that our task deserves. Brave, dedicated Public Servants and patriots are standing up for their country. Reporter republicans were united against the resolution, which outlines the rules for open hearings. Its shameful to create a constitutional crisis for purely partisan reasons. This is sovietstyle rules. Maybe in the soviet union you do things like this where only you make the rules. Reporter the speaker today adamant that the president is getting due process. Are these rules really fair . Especially yes they are. Yes they are. These rules are fairer than anything that has gone before in terms of an impeachment proceeding. Reporter trump has been urging his party to defend his actions and his move to pressure ukraine to investigate his political rival, joe biden. Will you do that . Will you all go on the record and say that the president did nothing inappropriate . Very clear, yes. Theres nothing in that phone call that is wrong or impeachable. Reporter meanwhile, down in the basement of the capitol, another key witness was testifying. Timothy morrison, a top official on the National Security council, who joined the Trump Administration after working for 17 years for republicans in congress. Morrison testified that he was told by the president s point person in ukraine, the u. S. Ambassador to the e. U. , gordon sondland, that millions of dollars in security aid was being held up until ukraine committed to investigate joe bidens son, hunter. But morrison was also on that phone call between the president and the president of ukraine and said that he was not concerned anything illegal was discussed. All right, so, lets get to mary bruce, shes live up on the hill again tonight. And mary, that vote today of course setting the stage for public hearings now. When will those get under way . Reporter well, david, democrats want to move quickly here. No dates have been set, but were told these hearings could start in the next two to three weeks. And tonight, weve learned that some of the witnesses who have already testified behind closed doors are now ready to do it again, this time, out in public. David . Mary bruce leading us off tonight. Mary, thank you. And as we said off the top, the president tweeting right after the vote, and late today, huddling at the white house with republicans from the hill. That meeting had already been scheduled, but they, of course, had plenty to talk about today. So, lets get right to our chief White House Correspondent jonathan karl, with us live tonight, and jon, is the white house giving them any guidance, how to help defend the president . What are you hearing from your sources tonight . Reporter well, david, the president s response via twitter came less than one minute after that house vote. It was a familiar message, he said simply, greatest witch hunt in american history. The white house strategy is to keep republicans fully onboard, portraying the impeachment inquiry as a partisan, democratsonly effort to hurt the president. And, of course, today, that vote, as you saw, not a single republican voted in favor of the inquiry. So, look for the president to continue to have meetings with republican lawmakers, like the ones he had today, to ensure that they stay in line while his legal Team Continues to stonewall an investigation that they say is unfair illegitimate. And as you say, jon, no question, the partisan battle lines drawn tonight, very clear. Jon, thanks. We move on tonight. The major halloween storm here in the east. The tornado watch. Temperatures set to plummet. And in the west at this hour, two new fires erupting. And we witnessed those fierce santa ana winds firsthand as we reported there yesterday. While in San Bernardino county, the hillside fire raced through a dense neighborhood. Look at these pictures. Several homes burning to the ground. Families, of course, fleeing. And now the race to save the animals, as well. Abcs Kayna Whitworth from california. Reporter tonight, new fires in Southern California burning homes and forcing evacuations in the middle of the night. In Riverside County, embers from the 46 fire filling the air, raining down on these terrified horses. A race to get them to safety. A frantic scene at this shelter. Grab a leash, grab a dog. Reporter volunteers rushing to rescue more than 90 cats and dogs. Shifting winds hurtling debris, creating challenging firefighting conditions. This right here is an example of what theyve been dealing with. The fire was actually burning in the other direction just a few minutes ago. And the wind shifted and its starting to push it up this ill. Officials say a car that crashed after a police chase burst into flames, sparking the blaze. And in San Bernardino there are literally hundreds of homes right now that are threatened. Reporter neighbors sounding the alarm about the hillside fire. You were saying that these folks that live in this house came and woke you up this morning . They were slamming the garage door, yelling, fire. Reporter our Clayton Sandell is there. The winds have been coming down those mountain canyons at a ferocious speed, pushing this fire into this residential neighborhood. Reporter and back at the 46 fire, crews battling their second major wildland fire in the last 24 hours. Most of our crews and some of the people that ive already talked to that are out here today had minimal sleep, maybe an hour or two at best last night, and theyre right back out here. Reporter more than a dozen fires breaking out across the area since wednesday. And david, unfortunately, that red flag warning will extend through tomorrow for parts of los angeles and Southern California. Even as these winds die down, the humidity is so low that firefighters all across this area are on high alert for new fires to start. David . All right, Kayna Whitworth continuing to follow this for us. Kayna, thank you. As i mentioned, we are also watching severe storms this halloween night. 45 million americans on alert here in the east, from the carolinas right up into the northeast. And that tornado watch, as well. So, lets get to meteorologist rob marciano, hes back in the east with us, as well, tonight. Rob, time it out. Reporter well, david, you know, the cold air that powered those santa ana winds is now powering this frontal system. Its moving pretty rapidly. Its making a mess of the east coast. Look at all the alerts on the map tonight. Weve got wind, weve got floods, weve got snow. And weve got tornado watches from pennsylvania all the way down to south carolina. This has brought damaging winds to the tennessee valley. Front itself is moving pretty rapidly. The heaviest rain will roll across the i95 corridor after midnight and clear the coastline by tomorrow morning. A lot of wind with this as it intensifies. 30, 40, 50mileperhour gusts into tomorrow morning and a lot of cold air, as well. Look at the wind chills, into the teens and 20s from chicago all the way down south into atlanta. Going to feel like winter across the east. David . All right, rob marciano, also just back from california. We continue to watch both coasts tonight. Thank you. And we move on now, and to the new message from isis tonight, confirming al baghdadi is dead, naming a new leader and their new words for the u. S. Tonight. Also this evening, hundreds of u. S. Troops, new images of Armored Vehicles now moving into syria. Abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz reporting in from the region tonight. Reporter on the heels of the release of that dramatic pentagon video, showing elite Delta Force Commandos taking on fire and responding with an air strike as they surround al baghdadis compound, then leveling it after he blew himself up, isis now announcing a new leader, ibrahim al qurayshi. In an audio announcement, the Group Warning america, do not be too happy or arrogant, proclaiming they are expanding from east to west. We are as close as any american can get to the area where baghdadi was killed. We are on the turkish side of the border, but that is syria right there, that wall you see, that roadway. And just four miles from here is where the americans carried out that raid. The mission conducted after President Trump said he would pull nearly all of the 1,000 American Forces out of syria. At some point, we have to bring our people back home. And thats what were doing. Reporter but today, u. S. Armored vehicles and american troops were headed into the wartorn country to guard the oil fields. And Martha Raddatz reporting in tonight from southern turkey, not far from the syrian border. And martha, we saw those u. S. Troops there entering syria. We know the president has said that only a small force would remain, so, whats the bottom line on u. S. Troop levels in syria tonight . Reporter well, david, weve got troops leaving northern syria, but we have hundreds and hundreds coming into the east, so, in the end, we could have as many as 700 American Forces remaining in syria. David . All right, Martha Raddatz from turkey. Martha, thank you. Here at home now, to new charges tonight. Fraternity members facing charges in the death of their underage Fraternity Brother. Authorities say the 19yearold was drinking at a frat party at an offcampus house, saying he drank himself to death. Heres abcs marcus moore now. And to every little girl who looked up to me, i hope that one day you can forgive me. Reporter the once rising star in the democratic party, stepping down in the wake of an ethics investigation into allegations she had a sexual relationship with a member of her staff. Thats a violation of house rules. Hill denies it, but does admit to a sexual relationship with a campaign staffer. I am leaving now because of a double standard. Im leaving because i no longer want to be used as a bargaining chip. Reporter hill, who is in the middle of a nasty divorce, has accused her husband of leaking naked pictures of her that were later posted online. Her husband hasnt commented. But katie hills own father tells abc news her resignation is the result of the actions of a wicked man, adding, evil has many faces and this is one of them. I didnt want to be pedaled by papers and blogs and websites used by shameless operatives for the dirtiest gutter politics that ive ever seen. Reporter and today, hill said she later learned more photos would be released.
