We have more live from Santa Barbara where hundreds came to honor fire victims and First Responders. Reporter such an emotional day here at Santa Rosa Junior College honoring fire victims. It was an inspiring day, too, though. A Community Taking stock on what was saved. Bagpipes play to honor a Community Still fragile and grieving. The night of oth 8th, we were of october 8th, we were all tested. The community, the fire service, Law Enforcement. Reporter this was a day of remembrance. A chance for Sonoma County to reflect on what was lost. I dont even know what it feels like to lose a home or loved one in a fire, but i know that theres a lot of people in our community dealing with that. Theyre going to be dealing with that for a longtime. Reporter paster billy andre lost his home in the fires. He got his family out and grabbed one photo album. As i opened them up, i realized they were empty. We thought we had all the time in the world to put those pictures and n those photo albums. Getting my children out safely was emotional. Reporter angelique and her son made the sign to thank First Responders who put their lives on the line. Without them, our city will be gone. Reporter throughout the ceremony, First Responders were given standing ovations. Many say since the fire, the Santa Rosa Community has become one. Honestly, ive never seen a Community Come together so good. I mean, this is true, we are sonoma strong. Reporter a fire bell was rung 42 times for those lives lost. Representative nancy pelosi toured the fire area today. She promised swift federal funds for victims. So many people are going to acts of congress. Reporter a Resilient Community fighting their way back from tragedy. In santa rosa, abc7 news. This morning, governor jerry brown issued a proclamation declaring today a day of remembrance of the Northern California wildfires. The governor made a pledge of support to the victims when he visited the north bay earlier this month. The proclamation remembers the human tollsf oeth people lost lives. Flags will be flown at half staff over the State Capitol in honor of the victims. Firefighters are closing in on controlling all four of the major north bay wildfires that began 20 days ago. Right now, the atlas fire in napa and solano counties is 100 contained. The tubbs, nuns, and pocket fires are 90 contained, with full containment expected tuesday. One of those fires has forced two schools in santa rosa to close indefinitely. John b. Reebly Elementary School and schaefer Elementary School are located in the middle of the devastation. The press democrat reports workers must clean up toxic waste before the schools reopen. There is no timeline yet for when that will happen. Students have been moved to nearby schools in the meantime. The rest of the citys schools are expected to reopen on monday. People on the peninsula took time in a gift card donation drive for those impacted by the wildfires. Abc7 news was in belmont where donation boxes were available earlier today at city hall. City staff was there to accept donations. The united way will give the cards to fire victims in the north bay, as well as those in mendocino and lake counties. Of course many homes are still damaged from the subway storm that flooded entire neighborhoods this past february. Today volunteers are helping fix that damage.
