the dramatic new video. a team from the u.s. navy racing to the wreckage after a passenger plane plunges into the sea. mystery explosion. three dead when a car explodes on a city street suddenly. the fbi and atf now involved. and, shark attack. a 13-year-old bitten by a massive predator off the southern california coast. airlifted for treatment. swimmers told to stay out of the water. and good evening. thanks for joining us on a very busy sunday. i'm tom llamas. we begin with breaking news in the fbi investigation into supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. authorities are now contacting possible witnesses as they probe allegations against him. abc news has confirmed that investigators interviewed deborah ramirez. a yale classmate who has accused kavanaugh of exposing himself at a party. also on the list, mark judge. allegedly the third person in the room during the alleged assault of dr. christine blasey ford. and president trump ordered the fbi investigation after ford's testimony in which she described a drunken kavanaugh putting his hand over her mouth and groping her. kavanaugh denies all allegations. but what once looked like a clear path to the supreme court is for now on hold. here's kyra phillips. >> reporter: tonight, the most closely watched and highly scrutinized background investigation in our nation's history is under way. abc news has learned the fbi has conducted its first interview with deborah ramirez. she alleges kavanaugh exposed himself to her while a student at yale university. an allegation she stood by today. kavanaugh denies the accusation. the president saying the fbi will have free reign in its probe. >> they'll be doing things that we never even thought of and hopefully at the conclusion, everything will be fine. >> reporter: however, sources telling abc news, this one week investigation comes with limits. reinforcing emerging concerns that the probe into allegations judge brett kavanaugh sexually assaulted christine blasey ford is too narrow. >> whatever the committee decides, i'm all in. >> in this situation and this kind of investigation, anybody that lies to the fbi will probably face charges because this is such a high priority investigation. >> reporter: the fbi will interview judge kavanaugh, dr. ford, and three more witnesses. kavanaugh's two schoolmates mark judge and p.j. smyth, and leland keyser, who ford claims were at a gathering where the alleged assault occurred. keyser already on record saying she recalls no such incident. kavanaugh denies all accusations. >> sometimes i had too many beers, but i did not drink beer to the point of blacking out. and i never sexually assaulted anyone. >> reporter: however, other kavanaugh classmates who contradict his testimony about drinking are not on the list. >> now, isn't that relevant, given that there clearly was drinking going on, at least it's alleged, at the party? >> no, i think you're trying to portray him as a stumbling, bumbling drunk gang rapist who during high school and college was bill cosby. six fbi background checks over the years would have uncovered this. >> reporter: also not being questioned, julie swetnick, who claims in a sworn statement she witnessed a drunk kavanaugh mistreat women at parties in high school. >> the swetnick thing is a joke. that is a farce. >> reporter: however deep this scope goes, there is no question testimony from the key, yet elusive, high school friend mark judge will be critical. judge, a recovering alcoholic, writes about his friend "bart o'kavanaugh" in his 1997 memoir "wasted: tales of a gen-x drunk." >> are you bart kavanaugh that he's referring to, yes or no? >> you'd have to ask him. >> kyra joins us live. and kavanaugh's friend says he will cooperate fully with the fbi. and we're learning ford has yet to hear from investigators? >> reporter: that's right, since launching its investigation, the fbi has yet to contact dr. ford. but it's certain she will be interviewed extensively. and the fbi may also seek to expand the number of people they speak to depending on what the initial witnesses tell them. tom? >> kyra, thank you. and as brett kavanaugh denies the allegations, which he called politically motivated, president trump delivered the same message in west virginia last night. here's tara palmeri.>> reporter president trump slamming democrats, taking his defense of judge kavanaugh on the road to a rally in west virginia. >> the entire nation has witnessed the shameless conduct of the democrat party. they've been on a mission to resist and obstruct and destroy, and you see that over the last four days. >> reporter: democrats on the attack as well, now questioning judge kavanaugh's temperament after thursday's testimony where he showed flashes of anger. >> this confirmation process has become a national disgrace. you have replaced advice and consent with search and destroy. >> reporter: democrat senator chris coons telling "60 minutes" -- >> it made me wonder about his suitability to serve on the bench. >> reporter: kavanaugh's opening statement blaming his political enemies drawing attention. >> fear that has been unfairly stoked about my judicial record, revenge on behalf of the clintons and millions of dollars in money from outside left-wing opposition groups. >> reporter: that comment raising eyebrows from republican senator jeff flake, who ignited the fbi investigation. >> well, the part that he talks about, the mention of the clintons and whatnot, i didn't like either. it seemed partisan. but, boy, i had to put myself in that spot. i think you give a little leeway there. >> i think the democrats could have avoided all of this. >> reporter: and today, a startling moment. the president's top aide kellyanne conway, while criticizing democrats, saying this -- >> i feel very empathetic, frankly, for victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment and rape. that -- i'm a victim of sexual assault. i don't expect judge kavanaugh or jake tapper or jeff flake or anybody to be held responsible for that. >> tara, that was quite a stunning moment from kellyanne conway. what else is she saying about this? >> reporter: conway has not returned our calls for further comment. she said she's sympathetic to victims, but they should be heard in a courtroom, not in a partisan hearing. she defended dr. ford earlier this week, saying she should not be ignored or insulted. tom? >> tara, thank you. we move on to another major story we're following tonight. the death toll soaring in indonesia following a tsunami. a ten-foot-high wall of water rushing ashore. residents scrambling in its wake. widespread destruction. a race to rescue survivors. some buried alive in the rubble. more than 800 confirmed dead. a number still expected to grow. james longman reports from the region tonight. >> reporter: nature unleashed. an island in ruins. new drone footage revealing home after home, flattened. in indonesia, an intense search for survivors after friday's deadly 7.5 magnitude earthquake and the tsunami it triggered. this woman pulled to safety after being trapped inside a restaurant. more than 800 dead and hundreds more injured. tonight, authorities fear the death toll could drastically rise as they pick through the debris. most of the rescue and recovery efforts focusing on the city of palu, where an untold number remain trapped under collapsed buildings. amid the devastation, one story of heroism emerging. authorities say 21-year-old air traffic controller antonius gunawan agung stayed in the control tower of a palu airport just as the earthquake struck, ensuring one last flight could take off safely. a spokesman for air navigation indonesia said the decision cost him his life, but potentially saved hundreds of others. today, indonesia's president touring the disaster area in palu, handing out rations, and telling survivors heavy equipment is on the way to recover more victims. several coastal towns remain cut off by damaged roads, bridges and downed communication lines. indonesia sits on the notorious ring of fire, the pacific area of major tectonic activity. so, it's no stranger to earthquakes. but this one looks very bad indeed. tom? >> he could be out there still. >> erielle, thank you. back at home, a mystery car explosion rocking allentown, pennsylvania. authorities confirming three were killed. and while they say there's no public safety threat, there's also little word on what happened here. here's zachary kiesch. >> reporter: new images of the deadly car explosion killing three men in allentown, pennsylvania. police and neighbors standing just feet away saturday night as the vehicle erupted in flames. residents describing a thunderous blast. >> we just had an explosion south of chew street. >> it's a car. we're getting multiple calls. >> reporter: the scare rippled throughout the neighborhood. investigators revealed few answers about the explosion, and what may have caused it. the men's identities have not been revealed. authorities calling the blast a "criminal incident." >> we have a high degree of confidence the perpetrator was probably killed in the incident. >> reporter: today, the fbi, atf, state, and local police descending on the scene, ruling nothing out. police are not saying if the victims were in the vehicle, or walking at the time of the explosion. the blast disrupting a quiet saturday night. shaking the neighborhood. shattering windows. debris scattered in every direction. residents told to shelter in place. tom, the atf is leading this investigation. they are calling it an isolated incident. but they're also asking anybody with information to come forward. tom? >> marci, thank you. next tonight, the tropical threat in the west. flash flood watches across six states as rosa closes in. let's get right to rob marciano. which way is the storm headed? >> it's heading right for the u.s. will make landfall across baja, california. still a hurricane, though it's weakening. it will make landfall tomorrow afternoon. and will have a lot of moisture. heaviest rain tomorrow into tuesday. flash flood watches for western arizona, and eastern parts of southern california as well. you see the swirl moving up. and some moisture coming from the pacific. and kind of a squeeze play here, that's why we expect a significant amount of rain, over four inches in some spots. in the desert, that's all it takes for flash flooding. >> rob, thank you. there's still much more ahead on "world news tonight" this sunday. the police officers killed in a shootout, answering a 911 call. plus, your money tonight. deals for americans looking to buy a car. how you can save your family more than $10,000. and, panic in the park. concert crowds running for cover. what sparked the chaos?
