reena ninan, joining us is kendis gibson all week in for tj. great to have you. >> it's good to be here and what an eventful week it is. the new developments in the search for those escapees from a new york state prison. >> dna evidence linked the two men to a hunting camp in a remote area not far from the prison. some of that evidence is rather personal. abc's elizabeth hur has the details. >> reporter: a new clue from a cabin has investigators intensifying their search for david sweat and richard matt shifting their focus back to where it began near the prison in new york. >> we have developed evidence that the suspects may have spent time in a cabin in this area. >> reporter: about 20 miles from the prison in a hunting cabin sources say investigators recovered dna from food also inside the cabin, prison-issued underwear. we are told the owner of the cabin made the discovery when he went to check on his place when he saw signs of people inside, the owner shouted and saw at least one person bolting. that was on saturday. meaning the dna evidence is less than two days old. >> it's a confirmed lead for us and we're going to run this to the ground. >> reporter: police want residents to remain vigilant and some admit they are nervous, including these teenagers who say they live less than a mile from the cabin. >> pretty intense, nerve-racking. we were up all night. we have the guns all ready in the house. >> reporter: there are now road blocks set up every half mile with hundreds of officers from new york and across the country on site searching for more clues to their whereabouts. and so far police say they have developed more than 2,000 leads and at this time, while police do not believe anyone is helping the fugitives, they are not ruling anything out. kendis and reena, back to you. >> elizabeth, thank you for that. an october trial date is now set for six baltimore police officers charged in the death of freddie gray. gray's death in police custody set off rioting back in the city in april. all of the officers have pleaded not guilty. their charges range from second degree murder to second degree assault. the debate over the confederate flag is raging in south carolina and beyond reinvigorated by the racially motivated massacre. nikki haley is calling for the flag to be removed from the grounds of the state capitol after photos surfaced showing suspected gunman dylann roof with the confederate flag. haley acknowledged it was not only divisive but offensive. >> we can move forward as a state in harmony and we can honor the nine blessed souls who are now in heaven. >> haley also said they're not going to let the symbol divide south carolina any longer. removing the flag would require a two-thirds vote of the south carolina generally assembly. speaking of controversy, president obama is drawing a lot of attention over his latest comments on racism in america. he raised eyebrows by using a word that hasn't been uttered in public by an american president in generations. more now from abc's jonathan carl. >> reporter: president obama used the "n" word as he invoked the long history of racism in america from slavery to jim crow that he says still casts a long shadow over america. >> that's still part of our dna. that's passed on. we're not cured of it. >> racism. >> racism. we are not cured of it. clearly. and it's not just a matter of it not being polite to say [ bleep ] in public. that's not the measure of whether racism still exists or not. >> reporter: those are especially blunt words from a president who has had to address the issue of race over and over again. after the shooting of trayvon martin in 2012 and michael brown in 2014. the death of freddie gray in baltimore in 2015 and now the massacre in charleston. the white house says the president has no regrets about using that order or about the debate that it has provoked. jonathan carl, abc news, the white house. the governor of maryland is fighting an aggressive form of cancer. republican larry hogan says the cancer is b cell, nonhodgkin's lymphoma. he says it may be stage 4 or at least very advanced stage 3. he told reporters yesterday he faces intense chemotherapy. he says doctors have told him he has a good chance of beating the disease. severe weather aiming for the crowded stretch of the country from washington, d.c. to boston today. yesterday an ef-1 tornado hammered the small town of portland in western michigan. 100-mile-an-hour winds severely damaged buildings and trapped several people in a good will store. millions of
