A patient has died after contracting a rare and always fatal brain disease. Officials say others may be at risk. Heather hamil of our manchester station has this report. Reporter its a rare, incurable brain disease. After two decades of practicing internal medicine i have never come across the disease. Reporter doctors at Catholic Medical Center believe one patient may have had sporadic cjd, which is a neurological disease which causes dementia and death. That patient since died. And tests are under way to determine if they definite hi had cjd. The protein that spreads the disease cannot be eliminated by standard sterilization techniques used in hospitals. But there is a very remote chance because of that that the disease can be transmitted via the surgical instruments. Reporter though chances are low, cmc contacted eight patients who had brain surgery procedures following the patient believed to have had the disease. None have symptoms. There is no risk to any other patients, their families or the general public. Reporter the hospital says a single piece of equipment used in the neurosurgery was loaned to the hospital. It was then sent outside of New Hampshire and used in other surgeries not involving granite staters. Possible exposure of no more than five patients. Reporter for the time being, brain surgeries stopped at cmc. And the equipment used has been quarantined. Missouri man accused of knowingly exposing hundreds of sexual partners to hiv 37yearold david mangum arrested after turned in by a former boyfriend who is now hiv positive. Mangum told police that he had more than 300 partners since he was diagnosed ten years ago. He didnt tell them about his diagnosis for fear of rejection. Five california girls are recovering from seconddegree burns, and youre not going to believe what is blamed. Doctors in fresno say severe burns were caused by limes. It happened when the girls decided to make a lime, Lemonade Stand outside. Combination of lime juice and sunlight caused a dangerous Chemical Reaction that left them covered in painful blisters. The burns took more than a day to actually show up. It was my youngest one that woke up screaming and crying. She couldnt handle the pain. And there were big blisters that were growing quickly on her, all over her body. Though its not clear if the marks will ever go away, the parents are trying to get the word out so this doesnt happen to any other kids. My goodness. The name of it is phytophotodermatitis, caused by a photo synthesis chemical in the lime and other fruits and vegetables. And they dont really know if the marks are going to go away yet. The girls have been cleared to go to school. But they have been told they have to limit their time in the sun, obviously, to prevent any major scarring. My goodness, poor girls. Yeah, so sweet. Now a multibillion dollar a year problem. Sticking up a gas station is so last century. Skimming is such a big problem that the secret service which tackles Financial Crime as well as protecting the president is on the case. Are you winning the war . It is even right now. We are doing our best. Reporter across the country increasingly sophisticated gangs some of them making up to 10 million a year are hiding these tiny Electronic Devices inside gas pumps. The skimmer silently harvests your credit card details while you think you are paying for gas. For all i know theyre stealing from me right now from outside of a pump almost no way of knowing. So what can you do to keep your credit card digits safe . Pay inside. Its time consuming but a whole lot safer. Check your statements. Most Credit Card Companies will suck up any loss if you report it within 60 days. And if you do pay at the pump. Pick one in full view of the attendant. Another big day on capitol hill yesterday as Top Obama Administration officials made their case for a strike against syria, but at this point we are probably a couple days away from a full vote. A small step forward on capitol hill. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed a resolution authorizing a strike against syria, but the white house still has a lot of convincing to do. Several congressional leaders indicated theyre backing president obama. Right now there isnt enough committed support to pass authorization for a strike against syria in both the house and senate. Top Obama National Security Officials went before the house. The United States must demonstrate through our actions that the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable. Reporter secretary of state john kerry grew frustrated when a republican lawmaker wanted to grill him on the attack in benghazi. Kerry said there was no place for that in the debate over syria. I have sympathy for people in syria. I do think there should be a worldwide response, but we should act cautiously. Reporter while Congress Debates in washington, president obama kept up pressure on lawmakers overseas. I think we will be stronger as a country in our response if the president and congress does it together. Reporter in sweden the president would not say what he would do if congress doesnt approve a strike. But the moral thing to do is not to stand by and do nothing. Karen, thank you for that. Prison officials in ohio ordered an investigation into the suicide of ariel castro. The convicted rapist, kidnapper found hanging in his cell. His victims have not commented on the incident, but prosecutors say castro couldnt take it even for a month, a small portion of what he dished out for more than a decade. Public Health Officials in New Hampshire believe one person has died of a rare degenerative brain disease. And they say there is a remote chance that up to 13 others in multiple states were exposed through surgical equipment. There are only about 200 cases of this disease diagnosed in the u. S. Every year. After two decades of practicing internal medicine i have never come across this disease. The disease progresses rapidly. Once symptoms appear and is always fatal. A montana judge has ordered a new sentencing hearing tomorrow for a former teacher who received 30 days in prison for raping a student. Now, the student later committed suicide. The judge had come under fire for claiming that the 14yearold victim was, quote, older than her chronological age. Just reading that story the first time boiled my blood. Its really remarkable. Besides saying that she was older than her chronological age, he said another doozie. She had as much control of the situation as the teacher. She was 14 years old. Yeah, he told this to the billings gazette. He later said he regrets his comments, that he didnt know what he was thinking. Just being stupid. Hard to make comments like that. Right. Not only see, i dont even know how i could possibly understand him saying Something Like this. But the fact that the teacher was charged with sex without consent with this 14yearold, you know, it wasnt like there was any moment in this case where the girl came out and said, no, no, wait a second. Like it was completely not consensual. For the judge to say things like that the expression it takes two to tango doesnt apply when its a teacher and a minor. It doesnt work that way, right. I am glad he has come to his senses. We will have to see. According to what he is saying, this is all a technical thing. Because apparently he thought it was 30 days. The minimum sentence may be two years. It still seems remarkably light. Right. The teacher may end up going to jail for two years if given the minimum sentence once again. Well keep an eye on it. George zimmerman has been pulled over for speeding a second time since hes been acquitted of murdering trayvon martin. Zimmerman was stopped near orlando tuesday for going 60 in a 45mileanhour zone. This time he got a 200 ticket. Zimmerman was pulled over back in july for speeding as well. He was let go with a warning. Now back to new york in a somewhat bizarre incident involving mayoral candidate anthony wiener. It happened inside a bakery yesterday in one of the citys heavily jewish neighborhoods in preparations for the jewish new year. A patient has died after contracting a rare and always fatal brain disease. Officials say others may be at risk. Heather hamil of our manchester station has this report. Reporter its a rare, incurable brain disease. After two decades of practicing internal medicine i have never come across the disease. Reporter doctors at Catholic Medical Center believe one patient may have had sporadic kroits Creutzfeldt Jakob disease which is a neurological disease which causes dementia and death. That patient since died. And tests are under way to determine if they definite hi had cjd. The protein that spreads the disease cannot be eliminated by standard sterilization techniques used in hospitals. But there is a very remote chance because of that that the disease can be transmitted via the surgical instruments. Reporter though chances are low, cmc contacted eight patients who had brain surgery procedures following the patient believed to have had the disease. None have symptoms. There is no risk to any other patients, their families or the general public. Reporter the hospital says a single piece of equipment used in the neurosurgery was loaned to the hospital. It was then sent outside of New Hampshire and used in other surgeries not involving granite staters. Possible exposure of no more than five patients. Reporter for the time being, brain surgeries stopped at cmc. And the equipment used has been quarantined. A missouri man is accused of knowingly exposing hundreds of sexual partners to hiv. 37yearold david mangum arrested after turned in by a former boyfriend who is now hiv positive. Mangum told police that he had more than 300 partners since he was diagnosed ten years ago. He said he didnt tell them about his diagnosis for fear of rejection. Five california girls are recovering from seconddegree burns, and youre not going to believe what is blamed. Doctors in fresno say severe burns were caused by limes. It happened when the girls decided to make a lime and Lemonade Stand outside. Combination of lime juice and sunlight caused a dangerous Chemical Reaction that left them covered in painful blisters. The burns took more than a day to actually show up. It was my youngest one that woke up screaming and crying. She couldnt handle the pain. And there were big blisters that were growing quickly on her, all over her body. Now a multibillion dollar a year problem. Sticking up a gas station is so last century. Skimming is such a big problem that the secret service which tackles Financial Crime as well as protecting the president is on the case. Are you winning the war . It is even right now. We are doing our best. Reporter across the country increasingly sophisticated gangs some of them making up to 10 million a year are hiding these tiny Electronic Devices inside gas pumps. The skimmer silently harvests your credit card details while you think you are paying for gas. For all i know theyre stealing from me right now from outside of a pump almost no way of knowing. So what can you do to keep your credit card digits safe . Pay inside. Its time consuming but a whole lot safer. Check your statements. Most Credit Card Companies will suck up any loss if you report it within 60 days. And if you do pay at the pump, pick one in full view of the attendant, which is less likely to have been tampered with. This is scary. And this is happening, and its a nationwide issue.
