And for millions across the country, were also dealing with the bitter cold that david was just talking about. Our extreme weather team is covering all of the angles this morning. Ginger zee is in central park and starts us off. Ginger, good morning. We have seen some improvement. Good morning to everyone. Here in central park weve got about 6 inches of fresh, fluffy snow. The winds were blowing, making it feel sub zero. This is nothing compared to what the nation is feeling. Look at some of the number, boston well over a fast snow. North and west of boston, they had two feet or so and chicago well over a foot. A lot of suburbs, even ohare and midway really close. Of course the numbers even in delaware, very high. The storm, next question, when is it pulling away . Its pulling away very quickly. We have to check in what the windiest conditions were, cohasset massachusetts. We find Ron Claiborne. Reporter im in the epicenter of this noreaster. The hardest hit area of wind and snow. Were looking at a foot, 15 inches maybe more of snow. Wind gusts reported at 55 miles an hour. This is an inlet eight, ten hours ago. Its now frozen over. Looks like some scenes out of antarctica this week. The snow is abating. So is the wind. Its been a rough, rough ride overnight. Noreaster nightmare. Overnight, the mammoth winter storm exploding all of the way from pennsylvania to maine. Freezing, blizzardlike conditions. Winds howling up to 35 Miles Per Hour. Snow falling in some areas at a rate of one inch every hour, causing a sloshy mess for drivers. Im going sideways, even if fourwheel drive. You have to take it easy. Reporter boston hit hard overnight with about a foot of heavy snow. Schools and even the state government, shut down. So much snow there, streets transformed into ski slopes. And a frigid farewell to bostons longtime mayor, tom menino, stepping down from office after 20 years. I guess Mother Nature wanted to give me one more gift. Reporter new york city slammed overnight with about six inches of snow and still falling. Governor cuomo, issuing a state of emergency, urging people to stay off the streets. In coastal massachusetts, flood warnings, as freezing waves crash into homes. Youll see water probably coming up over the top of here into the parking lot. Reporter and as far south as north carolina, it wasnt heavy snow but icy roads that sent this car sliding on to its side. The chilling storm already ripping through states like indiana and michigan, creating chaos on roadways. Even snowplows couldnt escape freezing. Conditions still pretty bad here. Very cold. But its going to get a lot colder as the temperature is expected to plunge later today, going on to the minus Single Digits and windchills, even colder. Ginger, back to you. Reporter ron, thank you. Reporter still experiences blizzardlike conditions in long island. Of the wind is blowing and 8 inches here. Governor cuomo took a preemptive strike shutting down major highways at midnight. The long island expressway shut down. They wanted plows to plow the roads with no obstructions. No other people on the roads. Theyre using mass transit. Operating on a weekend schedule, limited service. They are asking if people can stay home to do so. A amy, back to you. All right. Lisa, with a look at the travel. Talk about travel. Air travel, almost 3,000 Flights Canceled or delayed. Linzie januais is at laguardia. Good morning. You can see one of the very long checkin lines. People spending the night in airports. Overnight in chicago, passengers stuck on the runway for three to four hours after too many flights landed at midway at the same time. Yesterday, there were over 10,000 delays and 3,000 cancellations. This morning more than 3,000 flights delayed already and more than 1800 canceled. New york area airports are faring the worst so far followed by philly, chicago and boston. Its freezing temperatures and more snow on the way it could take days to untangle this mess. You definitely want to check with your airline before you head to the airport to travel. David . You should havezine the jaws dropping in the studio. 10,000 delays in the last 24 hours. Well have Winter Weather warnings when this snow blows all over the place when the winds pick up. Then we have temperatures over the weekend and into next week. Monday and tuesday were seeing temperatures way below zero during the day. Thats the first time in 30 years thats happened in this area. So, clearly, cancellations, schools may be canceled. The numbers of are Single Digits and teens and even parts of tennessee this morning. They we have a look what happens in the next cold blast. The numbers not just plummet but this is the wicked wild, brainfreezing. We use the word dangerous. Its when the pets absolutely need to come inside. When we go to 25, 35 below zero. You have to be outside for a short amount of time for frostbite and hypethermia to set him. Well talk about another storm but for now dave and amy. Talking about the temperature, extreme pem temperatures, frostbite. You have to be concerned about this. I want to bring in our medical editor, dr. Richard besser. You talk about frostbite. What you see is whitish or gray color to the skin. A firm or waxy feel. A numbness. You dont know you have it, you too have look at the people around you. Hypothermia is very serious. How do you know youre going to that situation . Normally its 80 degrees. If it drops to 85 degrees thats hypothermia. Babies may have bright red skin. How long does this take before any of it sets in. You saw the temperatures ginger said are coming. Were dealing with this for days to come. What concerns me is not just the temperature but the wind. Its a matter of minutes, you can have frostbite set in, you can have hypothermia. People indoors without heat can get hypothermia. With a few seconds left, a lot of kids playing in the snow. What do you do. Its not hot watt never. You want luke warm water to warm them gradually. That will prevent damage and burns. Hippothermia. Get help . To a doctor right away. Reporter police in South Carolina say 39yearold Jason Mark Carter should be considered dangerous. We just want mr. Carter to be returned to the facility in columbia. Obviously, we dont want to see anybody hurt. Reporter carter has been committed for almost eight years since the death of his mother and stepfather in 2006. I remember the case did receive, you know, a good deal of publicity. Investigators searched. They made their way to the basement. When they made entry, mr. Carter was inside the locked room. And his deceased mother and stepfather were in the same room with him. Reporter he was found incompetent to stand trial. Police say he has family in north carolina. Meantime, with more than 2 million americans joined the ranks of the insured, it appears obamacare could make things worse for emergency rooms. An oregon study shows the newly insured are 40 more likely to head straight to the e. R. The findings contradict the key argument that obamacare would help rein in e. R. Visits and costs. And californians from sacramento to hollywood are puzzling over an unidentified object they saw new years eve. They say the glowing object hovered for some time. And then, zoomed away. Now, to the dramatic rescue in antarctica. All 52 passengers, safely aboard a new ship this morning. But their return home is delayed because it turns out the rescuers may need rescuing themselves. And this morning, were hearing from some of the passengers as they try to head home. Abcs Alex Marquardt has the story. Reporter as the chinese helicopter crossed 16 nautical miles of ice, a red ship, their rescue, came into view. After ten days stuck in the ice, the ice breaker was a sight to behold. Their new passage home. The weary passengers were hoisted up on to the deck in a small boat and warmly shown to their rooms. I was immensely relieved for the people under my care. I was pleased with having extracted them from that situation. Reporter smiles all around, as the fivehour rescue mission, which included nine helicopter trips, was pronounced a success. I was just a feeling of having relief. And having completed the job safely. And everybodys back onboard. Reporter as the sun set, the ship got under way, plowing through ice several feet thick. As you can see, its not exactly slicing through all this ice. Thats surrounding us. This ship is dealing with it. But were certainly making slow progress. Reporter the passengers original ship remains stuck in the ice. Some of it almost ten feet thick. But the 22man crew has been resupplied and are waiting until they can break free or another ship can reach them. The ship is now on standby out in open water, in case it has to go back and rescue the chinese ship. They say theyre going to try to break free in the coming hours as tidal conditions change. Amy . A woman says she purchased this painting at a flea market, 7. A painting that was painted by the great renoir. The museum saying it was stolen from its collection wants it back. Theres a tugofwar. Who should get it . Abcs jeff zeleny. Reporter a lucky find . Or a stolen treasure . This morning, thats the question for a federal judge, with a oneofakind renoir painting. At the center of an intense legal battle. The tiny work of art, the size of a napkin, is an 1879 landscape called on the shore of the seine. A virginia woman says it is hers. She bought it in a flea market in 2009, for just 7. The Baltimore Museum of art says that price was a real steal. Thats because they claim the painting was actually stolen in 1951. And they want it back, now that its resurfaced. The fbi seized the painting until a judge determines the rightful owner. In court papers filed this week, the museum produced a list of evidence it says proves the renoir was stolen, including a 60yearold police report. Old museum catalogs and even a receipt, showing a patron bequeathed the painting to the museum. The museum claims it was stolen and claimed it owned it. The museum has to prove it was, in fact, stolen and they did own it. Reporter neither she nor her attorneys would speak to abc news. Her brother says she took the painting years ago from her mother, an art aficionado. Even if she paid 7 or 70,000, if the painting was stolen, a thief cant pass ownership on to somebody else. Edward jones facing charges that he tried to hire an undercover cop to kill his wife. Abcs Steve Osunsami has more on what turned out to be a very emotional day in court. Im afraid for my life. Reporter an emotional Michelle Jones, begging a South Carolina judge to slam the jail shut on her own husband. Retired charleston firefighter, clinton jones. He has no remorse. He needs to stay behind bars. Reporter prosecutors say he offered 8,000 on new years eve to a hitman he hoped would kill his wife. But the man turned out to be an undercover officer. In this police report, investigators say he thought Michelle Jones was about to leave him and take the kids. When you go to extreme of wanting to hire somebody to murder your wife, thats lifechanging. Reporter according to police, the retired fire captain gave the undercover officer his wifes photo and a work address. And asked him to make sure that he finished off his wife because he did not want to visit her in the hospital. I dont know why i would talk about such a thing. Its not me. I would never hurt anybody in my life. I help people. Reporter family members tell us he hasnt been is same since surviving this massive fire at a sofa store in 2007. Nine other firefighters were killed. But his wife isnt hearing any excuses. This cannot be blamed on medication. This is a sick plan thought out to take my life. To leave our kids with no mother. Reporter april jones is one of those kids, torn between mom and dad. I love you, dad. I love you. Reporter she broke down when the judge said no to bail and ordered him to keep away from his family. Now, to a popular california priest who was found murdered in the Church Rectory on new years day. Police have a suspect in custody at this hour. A man they say had other runins with authorities in the hours leading up to that killing. Abcs reena ninan has the story. Reporter a rare glimpse this morning at an accused killer and his erratic spree that eureka, california, police say ended in the murder of father eric freed in the rectory of his own church. It seems to be a crime of opportunity. We have not established a motive. Reporter the day before the murder, on new years eave, Gary Lee Bullock was arrested for public intoxication. Acting so erratically, he was sent to a hospital where he had to be restrained, according to police. He was eventually released. Hours later, police got a call about a suspicious person at father freeds church. Police found him and referred him to a shelter. Soon after that, a Security Guard said he saw a man matching bullocks description around the church. And asked him to leave. There were a lot of people who hung around that rectory all the time. I would see people sleeping in the doorway. Reporter today, we know it was bullocks family that directed police to a house, where father freeds car was discovered nearby. He was arrested while driving with his fatherinlaw. Were collecting evidence off of him as well as interviewing him. Reporter Police Investigating father freeds murder say there were signs of blunt force trauma, a violent struggle and forced entry. Where we go from here is continue to analyze the evidence weve collected, examine for dna, do the autopsy and determine the exact cause of death. Reporter one parishioner can envision where father freeds typical kindness may have exposed him to a killer. I can almost imagine what he was saying to him at the time. Why dont you sit down. But first, lets hear from them. Charisse had always been a normal weight. But at 13, she was on her own after school. I no longer had parental control over my food. Reporter she would gorge on chips, pretzels and cookies. I would hide food. So, my parents wouldnt know how much i was eating because it was embarrassing. I had all this freedom. At the same time, i knew it wasnt healthy. Reporter she peaked at 256 pounds her senior year of high school. Thats one of my lowest points, was breaking down at a store with my fam because i was 17 and i had to shop at womens plussized stores. Reporter her breakthrough came after her second attempt at losing weight. I was sitting in the car with my mom. And i was just crying. I was just sabotaging myself. That was the moment i was like, im done. By age 13, i was wearing 3x tshirts. Reporter by high school, mike tipped the scale at almost 500 pounds. And it didnt stop there. When i graduated high school, i went up another 100 pounds. I didnt do much. And what i did do was eat. So, played video games and watched tv. And i ate. And i was good at it. Michael, you, obviously, focus on changing your diet and eating habits. What was the most challenging part for you . The challenging part is its daunting. You think, i have to lose weight, no matter how much, its daunting. Start out slow. Dont quit anything cold turkey. We have a natural progression of things. I love bacon as much as the next person. I loved bacon when i was big. I love it now. But to cut it out, you take a blt. Everybody loves a blt. You lessen the bacon a little by little. Becomes an l. T. Sandwich. You start taking it out. Exactly. Swap out whatever you want. You started new things in your life you never have done before, right . I rode a rollercoaster for the first time the last couple of years. I went kayaking. Sky 7 hd shows a slow lane on southbound 280 is open now, but all other southbound lanes are closed near john daly boulevard. Around 5 30 this morning two cars collided in the northbound lanes. One of the drivers jumped the median and was hit by at least one car in the southbound lanes. Sue hall has a new development in that situation. Yeah, the final car has just been towed away from the northbound direction, but as you can see on our map here that southbound is still very, very slow, still just one lane getting by. Chp hoping to get their investigation wrapped up and the other lanes open by 11 00. Across town northbound 101 weve got another accident. He wanted clooney or one of those guys. Clooney, pitt, brad, you know, all those bradley cooper, probably wanted him. Got stuck with me. Reporter also nominated for a golden globe is a guy called barcad abdi, who plays the pirate chief. Im the captain now. Reporter he never acted before. He was working as a chauffeur in minneapolis. We never met facetoface until they took possession of the bridge. Reporter the director, a onetime documentarymaker, planned it that way. It was terrifying. And we knew it was fake. A lot of stuff came out in the course of these very clumsy things that were not scripted but were very much in the moment. I didnt know what they were saying in the movie until i saw the film. I wondered, in reading about the book, how much it was based on the 2008 collapse and how striking that really was for america. It was terrifying. I remember sitting there watching just stocks plummeting and banks freezing up. This is an amazing thing. The layers of the onion are being peeled back. Were seeing the interworkings of the american economy. And this thing we only get a glimpse of. Kind of invisible world. And we only get a glimpse when people like Edward Snowden show up and dump massive amounts of data to the press. And we see whats going on. Edward snowden, in sort of our reporting last year and history will tell how hes looked back upon for revealing the sweeping surveillance program. But your book talks about 200 billion stolen from our economy. I wont give away where the trail leads but. But again, its where we read in the papers. Its about a bond trader on wall street. The beginning of the book, he discovers that somebody is selling off massive amounts of u. S. Treasuries to attack the u. S. Economy. And he gets recruited by the military to figure out who is doing it, why theyre doing it and how it can be stopped. What makes it so thrilling is it could happen in real life. Drew chapman.
