The discovery of four crude explosive devices. Dry ice bombs, in restricted areas, parts of the airport where the passengers cant go. Two terminals targeted over two separate days. And two of the devices exploded. This morning, Los Angeles Police and the fbi are investigating how four dry ice bombs were placed in restricted areas at the nations thirdbusiest airport. One of the homemade devices exploded monday night at 8 20 p. M. , near a gate and close to the planes. No one was injured. Police found two more devices in an area where only employees are allowed and were able to clear them before they detonated. The bottles containing dry ice make for a simple but dangerous explosive device. When the dry ice melts in a bottle, the Carbon Dioxide gas has nowhere to escape and it explodes, as seen here in a Discovery Channel special. Oh all right. Reporter this comes just a day after a similar incident at l. A. X. On sunday, Officials Say an airport worker heard an explosion in an employee mens room in terminal two. A 20ounce plastic bottle was found that contained the dry ice. That explosion also occurred in a restricted area. I think its crazy. I know how high the security is. I dont know how anything can get into an area where its not supposed to. Reporter officials are combing through the surveillance video, and interviewing witnesses, trying to find out who is leaving these dry ice bombs. We heard that there was a security breach. Nobody had to evacuate or anything. Reporter at this point, Law Enforcement is not treating this as a terrorist threat. Signs are pointing more to a disgruntled employee, someone who would have access to those restricted areas. As you can imagine, george, a source of major concern. Thanks, very much. Lets get the latest on a deal that may be coming together to end the government shutdown, prevent america from defaulting on its debts for the first time in history. Senate leaders have struck a tentative deal that would keep the government solvent for another few months. Now, the question is whether it can pass and whether it can pass in time to prevent default. Shutdown . What shutdown . At week three, visitors to the National Memorials in washington are ignoring it, blowing past signs and barricades. Although stinking mounds of trash are tougher not to notice. After a furious round of talks over the past 24 hour, Senate Leaders, harry reid and mitch mcconnell, men who often seem to detest each other, have put together a tentative deal that could end this mess, at least for now. Senator mcconnell and i have been working diligently the last few days. Weve made tremendous progress. Reporter the deal would reopen the government, but only until january 15th. Avoid default for now, extending the governments ability to borrow money until midfebruary. And there would be no major changes to obama care. A republican demand that triggered the crisis in the first place. The deal would set up immediate talks for a longterm budget deal. Its extremely positive. You just feel good when you see the senate start working the way you know it should work. Reporter this tentative agreement would still need republican support in the house. And this morning, there is no sense of how Speaker Boehner will react. Although late monday, he seemed unimpressed. Whats your message for the white house . Reporter the public has clearly had enough. In the latest abc News Washington post poll shows disapproval for everybody, the president and congress. After 15 years on the run, al libi, one of the worlds most wanted terrorists, will now face justice for the devastating 1998 attack in east africa, against u. S. Embassies. More than 200 people were killed, including 12 americans. Overnight, while most of us were asleep, there were two horrific car bombing explosions in the east african nations of kenya and tanzania. Reporter the former confidant of Osama Bin Laden arrived in new york saturday, under armed guard, after u. S. Officials attempted to question him for ten days. But abc news has learned the interrogation was stopped because of al libis failing health. Sources tell us he has hepatitis c, a viral infection that attacks the liver. Al libi is receiving medical treatment at a secret location in the new york area. The government plans to nurse him back to health, so he can face trial for his alleged role of master minding the plot so many years ago. Despite his health, because he is a top al qaeda leader captured in recent memory, al libi will move throughout the nations biggest city, amid an army of security. New documents leaked by the fugitive Edward Snowden show that the spy agency has swept up hundreds of millions of email and messaging contacts. Many of them american citizens. Snowden reportedly promised the russians he would stop the embarrassing leaks about the u. S. Spy programs while he was in his safe haven there. But this mornings revelations in the washington post, are based almost entirely on documents he gave to the washington post. The post reported that the nsa, the National Security agency, has been secretly collecting and storing what it terms as hundreds of millions of contact lists from personal emails and instant messaging accounts around the world, many of them belonging to americans. According to the post, during a single day last year, the nsa special source Operations Branch collected more than 440,000 email addresses from yahoo . 82,000 from facebook. 33,000 from g mail. Its more than 250 million contacts. What do they do with them . Reporter they say theyre trying to collect all this overseas to target possible terrorists and drug smuggling. Because of the bulk of this, the buddy lists and contacts of americans are also ending up being gathered. Al of this as snowden reportedly is settling in in moscow. He received an award from other american whistle blowers last week. And told the wall street journal, he had no regrets, the actions hes taken. He could have turned them over a while ago. We dont know when he gave them to the washington post. Reporter it likely was. They have lots of documents. Thousands of documents they intend to make public at some point. Here at home walmart and xerox are blaming each other for a computer glitch that allowed food stamp users to go on something of a wild shopping spree with unlimited budgets. The shelves emptied quickly in louisiana as shoppers walked away with some ten shopping carts each. Now that the glitch has been fixed, walmart is getting stuck with the bill. Xerox, the company that runs the food stamp computer system, says walmart failed to follow emergency procedures. And speaking of glitches, another one happened at united airlines. Briefly allowing people to book tickets for as little as zero dollars. Oh come on with frequent flyer miles they didnt have. It is now the second website malfunction in the last month. A 6yearold florida boy drowned in one of the pools aboard that ship. Witnesses say it happened so fast, by the time they could get to him, it was too late. Abcs matt gutman has the story. Reporter this morning, the carnival victory is back at sea. The family of 6yearold Quentin Hunter reels from its heartbreak. They were on a cruise on sunday. Carnival Officials Say quentin was playing with his 10yearold brother at this pool. When suddenly, eyewitnesses heard a cry for help. We heard the deejay say, theres a child in the pool. For a split second, he began to drown. Reporter passengers dove in after hunter, in the 4 1 2feet deep pool. Carnival says passengers first administered cpr, until its own medical team arrived, adding that it does not have life guards on its ships. They stayed 20 minutes. Trying to revive him. He was fighting for his life. You could see that he was. Reporter on monday, that pool deck was crisscrossed with yellow caution tape. One of hunters parents was at the pool when he drowned. In a statement, the company extended heartfelt sympathy to the family. Last month, a 41yearold man also died of an apparent drowning in the hot tub of another carnival ship. Though the toxicology report has yet to be released. As for hunter, its not clear how long he was under water. But experts say its not unusual for a submerged body to go unseen. As you see in this demonstration, when the water is calm, you can see the dummy clearly. But when the water is agitated, as it would be with other swimmers in the pool, the dummy is barely visible. Get this, george. There are no laws requiring any cruise lines to have life guards posted on its ships. But carnival says this is the first time a child has drowned on one of its ships in company history. Such a sad story. Matt, thank you very much. The product is safe and effective. And dont expect the government to step into the middle of this one. Supplements arent treated like drugs. Theyre treated like food. With supplements, its the wild, wild west. Theres no proof that they work. And they only take them off the market if someones been harmed. New satellite pictures have revealed faint images of what appears to be a vessel drifting at sea. Abcs linsey davis has that story. Reporter experienced captain, david dikes, was aboard the nina off the coast of new zealand, along with his wife, their teenage son, and four crew members, three of them americans, when they radioed officials about june 3rd. One month later an undelivered text message was recovered from the day after the storm. It read, storm sails shredded last night. Its been a nightmare. And i cant wake up out of it. Were always thinking, what else can we be doing . There has got to be somebody out there who can hear our plea. Reporter local authorities called off the search in july. But the families of the missing sailors refused to give up. Commissioning the private american search and rescue group that secured these satellite images. They appear to show a schooner the same shape and size as the nina drifting near where the crew disappeared. I did not sleep that night. I was so excited. I mean, this is what weve been waiting for. Reporter but this morning, officials in new zealand apparently are not convinced. Reportedly telling the crews families, theyll need a better quality image before relaunching the search. The reenactment includes the moment when kate found she had vanished. I was looking at her bed. I couldnt make it out. And then, i realized shes not in that bed. And i thought, i wonder if she had woken up and gone to our bed. She wasnt in our bed. And that was the first time that i guess, you know, the panic kicked in. Two fairhaired men, possibly dutch or german, we are seen casing the apartment. Could this have been a preplanned abduction . Madeleine mccanns abduction, has all the hallmarks of a preplanned abduction. That would involve reconnaissance. Were keen to understand who these people were. Whose wife was killed seven years ago. The family of nicole pietz was relieved and emotional, after they had seen their long quest for justice result in a conviction. Abcs Neal Karlinsky has all the details. We, the jury, found the defendant reporter for nicole pietzs family, it was an emotional end. After seven long years of fighting, david pietz was convicted of killing his wife, nicole. Strangling her with his own hands and dumping her in the wood. Listen to her sister, tanya, when pietz was moved out in handcuffs. Youre going to hell, pietz. Reporter outside, nicoles 72yearold mother, who fought tooth and nail to see her daughters killer behind bars, could finally exhale. The last 7 1 2 years have been torture for us. You know, we shell never come back. I never got to say goodbye to her. No mother should ever have to bury her child. Reporter gael schneider hounded police for six years to arrest her soninlaw. Making life miserable for him. Offering up fiery testimony during the trial. He murdered my daughter. Reporter you kept the pressure on him. I did. Reporter it took the jury less than a day and a half, despite what many thought was a potentially weak case. No hard evidence. All circumstantial. But the jury bought it. Right before the verdict, they reviewed three key pieces of evidence that go right to davids character. His 911 call. Voice messages to nicoles phone while missing. And his recorded interview with police. Sources say it showed david to be an uncaring liar who was sketchy about the facts. David pietzs lawyers are not giving in. There will be an appeal in this case. Reporter when essential densed, david pietz faces between 10 and 8 years for a murder that he may not have gotten away with if not for the persistence of nicoles mother. For Good Morning America, Neal Karlinsky, abc news, seattle. Lets bring in dan abrams. Dan, seven years after the fact, no physical evidence. No witnesses. Still a conviction. And for a long time, they didnt bring this case because they didnt think they had enough evidence. There was new evidence that came forward in the form of dna and cell phone records that allowed them to move forward. But this is a case of putting the pieces of the puzzle together. The prosecutors had to bring together a little bit of dna evidence, a little bit of testimony that showed his statements were inconsistent, in certain cases, and piece it together. I think that as they put those pieces together, the most important thing they needed and you heard, the last things that they were asking for was all related to his credibility. His credibility and his character, given that. He was on trial, why not take the stand . Because of those reasons. Because of the inconsistencies. As a legal matter, absolutely not. As a legal matter, when you have questions, inconsistencies, issues he doesnt want to have to address on the witness stand. Including affairs, et cetera, i think it was the right call for him not to take the stand. And the jury making a relatively quick decision. Thats right. Thank you very much, dan. Reporter erin cox is an honor student and a star player on her High School Volleyball team with dreams of playing at college. This morning, she is sitting the bench, after she was stripped of her captainship and suspended for five games in the middle of her senior year. And its all because she says she was doing the right thing. Answering a call from a friend who needed a ride home from a party where there was underaged drinking. Erin had just finished work earlier this month, when she went to pick up that friend. She goes to a party because someone there says, can you come take me home . I want to go home. She gets there and literally minutes later, the police show up. Reporter but erins school in the boston suburbs has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to parties where drinking was involved. And they punished her, even though her family lawyer says Police Confirmed erin hadnt been drinking. If a kid asks for help from a friend, you dont want that friend to say, sorry, i cant help you, i might end up in trouble at school. Shes very fragile. And im worried about her. Im very worried about her. She didnt do anything wrong. Reporter in a statement to abc news, the family lawyer also said this, quote, by punishing erin cox, the North Andover School District sends a contrary and very dangerous message. That young people are better off letting their friends drive drunk. The parents of one of erins teammates agree. They claim she was arrested and she was not. They made the decision based on nothing coming from erin or her family. I would hate to see this hurt her chances of excelling in college. Reporter now, erins mother and her lawyer are working to get the school to reverse its decision. She did what she thought was right. And im proud of that. Reporter we contacted erins school and its lawyer. Both declined to comment. Erins mother filed a lawsuit against the school on friday. The judge ruled the court didnt have jurisdiction. And mark being the choreographer, you have to take this womans story. She has a baby and goes through a divorce. How do you choreograph the highs and lows of life . I mean, absolutely. Thats a tough challenge to take on. But i like that we took a positive spin on it. It was a colorful dance. It was her best dance yet. The best scores yet. I guess you can say, went out with a bang. You sure did. It was such a special week. Most memorable year. I was so nervous at the beginning of the week. Actually kind of exposing that part of my life and being more vulnerable. But i was proud with the packages, opening up. And out of any time, i felt throughout the show, i was growing slowly. And i was opening myself up more. And i felt like that night, last night was the night that i felt completely open and close to the world. Can i tell you the difference between when you were here and now . And now. Wow. Isnt it crazy. Its true. You can sense it from you. Theres a difference. Theres a different aura. When i first started the show, i felt out of place, like i want to do this. I felt so new to this audience. And i feel, slowly, working with mark, honestly, my confidence level has gone up. You can hear it. And i was introduced to a new crowd. Which is great. Theres been a lot made of last weeks show. And i know youre tight with julianne. How does that factor in . Was she rough on you . I think it was tongue and cheek. She was kidding around. We went to dinner that night, me, her and derek. People like to make things a bigger deal than they are. That didnt shake you at all . I mean, not really. Nothing like that really shakes me. Yeah, ballas. Im his partner. I was a little startled. And hes like, its fine. Were like brother and sister. I was like, all right. Im just saying. Taking the high road. Even busy moms like me. How do you become that exercise addict . And not addict in a negative way. You can fall in love with exercise. First of all, how it makes you feel. The endorphins that it releases. People react to exercise in different ways. Sometimes chemically, we can become addicted in a good way. Reporter so, following the advice of experts, i try to become a fitness addict, too. Journaling my goals. Find the time to work out. No more excuses. I start my day earlier, too. And i stick to the workout that makes me happy. Exercise releases pleasant chemicals in your brain. Reporter you can train your brain to become a fitness addict. Heres how it works. After working out for 30 minutes or less, endorphins are released in the brain. Those chemicals can lead to a feeling of euphoria. Youre literally training your brain. Yes. But its not a false sensation. Your train releases chemicals when youre active. And fewer when youre sedentary. Start off with maybe a tenminute workout. Do it every other day. Maybe increasing to 15. Then add an extra day. Slowly, build them up. As opposed to starting with Something Big and fizzling off.
