abc's jeff zeleny is at the white house with the latest. a lot of pressure on house speaker john boehner this week end. >> reporter: you're right. he's convening a meeting of his republicans that are not agreeing on much. the pressure on those 800,000 federal workers is the real story. that's the story the white house is trying to get across. how this potential government shutdown could affect real americans. president obama warning congress. >> do not shut down the government. do not shut down the economy. >> reporter: and warning americans of the real implications of a government shutdown. >> military personnel will not get paid on time. federal loans forrural communities. families buying a home will be frozen. >> reporter: with three days left in the fiscal year, a shutdown once unlikely, now, all too real for these federal workers. >> my wife and i are federal workers. >> we work hard. we expect to be paid and not laid off. >> reporter: the senate passed a bill to keep the government running. now it's back in the house. many republican rts fighting to delay the health care law. what happens in a shut wroun? visa and passport applications from 500,000 people sit untouched. mortgages delayed for first-time home buyers. and flood relief in colorado, some help already delayed. the national guard is holding off on sending 120 soldiers, citing the uncertainty of budget constraints and possible government shutdown. colorado congressman cory gardener. >> this is unacceptable. >> reporter: visitors in washington seeing an impasse up close. what do you think of the shutdown? >> typical. congress and the senate are being stubborn. >> reporter: what are you telling your congressman? >> telling lee to get it resolved. >> reporter: there are deep divisions among republicans. the tea party republicans especially. they're intent on trying to keep the obama health care bill tied to this. >> so many people watching if the sidelines thinking the whole thing is ridiculous. >> and then the second hurdle, the debt ceiling. people will be watching the stock market. our thanks to you, jeff. the other major story out of the white house. the historymaking phone call with iran. look at this picture. >> this is what president obama and the iranian president rouhani looked like in the 1970s. that was the last time there was high-level contact with the country. >> are did you dig up that photo, by the way? >> we have a crack research team. you should see the pictures they have of us from back then. >> reporter: i can't wait. it was a 15-minute phone call. this morning, the iranian president touched down in tehran to some interesting reaction. it was a historic announcement few saw coming. >> i spoke on the phone just now with the president of the islamic republic of iran. >> reporter: not many expected that iran would unclench its fist on twitter. the president of iran tweeted this photo and saying, after historic phone conversation with barack obama, president rouhani in plane about to depart for tehran. >> the fact that it's not going on behind closed doors suggests there's a p.r. exercise involved. >> reporter: the last time a u.s. president spoke to the president of iran was 1979. president obama was still in high school. the u.s. was about to be cons e consumed by the iranian hostage crisis. retold on the big screen in "argo "argo." >> this was the first communications between an american and iranian president since 1979 underscored the deep mistrust between our countries. we have a unique chance to make progress. >> reporter: dr. rouhani cranked up the offensive. >> i was right next to mr. rouhani's car as hardliners showed up, pelted the car with eggs, even threw a shoe at the iranian president. in islamic culture, it's very insulting. and kind of tells him that we do not respect you. >> reporter: iran will also be a major focus when benjamin netanyahu visits the white house next week. the israeli embassy's twitter account tweeted out a phony linked in account making fun of president rouhani. >> he has a twitter account but regular iranians cannot access twitter. >> reporter: the u.s. government was pushing for people to have access in 2009 to have twitter. >> a lot of history and a lot at stake. thank you, reena. time to check the other top headlines. ron claiborne. >> breaking news. another pmajor earthquake in pakistan. today aches quake centered in almost the exact same spot as a 7.7 quake that hit earlier this week. the united nations has taken another step to work on the syrian stock pile of weapons. there was a unanimous vote to destroy those weapons. the resolution is strong and enforceable, says john kerry. >> today, the world, with a single voice for the first time is imposing binding obligations on the assad regime. and the move comes after more than 1,000 seyrianin ins w killed in a chemical weapons attack last month. the state of new jersey was ruled to be forced to allow gay marriage. governor chris christie says, no way. he's vowing to challenge that in the state's supreme court. >> reporter: in a stunning ruling at an emergency hearing, the state of new jersey could legalize same-sex marriage as early as october1st. >> i'm a 55-year-old giddy woman who is going to get married. >> reporter: six couples stood before a judge on friday pleading for the same rights as married let roe sexual couples. >> many, many important benefits are not available if you're not married. >> reporter: they say it's unconstitutional to the denied those rights. new jersey is the latest of 1 states to allow same-sex marriages. >> we might not have the protections that the word marriage could bring us. knowing we won't have to have that fear anymore. that we will have security. >> reporter: governor chris christie's spokes person issued a statement saying the governor plans to appeal. since the legislature refused to allow the people decide expeditiously, we'll allow the supreme court to make this decision. it could take months before a decision is reached. >> i served my country. i should have the same rights as everybody else in this country. >> reporter: in illinois, the same firm that represented the new jersey plaintiffs scored another victory on friday. a judge has thrown out a motion that challenged the ban. >> hopefully, we get to the marriage case. then we can win. and then i can issue licenses to the folks here. >> reporter: for "good morning america," tai hernandez, abc news, new york. new this morning, the suspect in the deadly beats of a dodgers fan has been released by police. jonathan denver was fatally stabbed. michael month dpomry was arrested. but released friday night. he could still be rearrested. and the fiance of former nfl player aaron hernandez is in trouble with the law this morning. she was indicted on perjury charges. the charges filed against her in the case of hernandez's murder trial. the price of oil falling below $103 a barrel. that's having a rim effect right here on gas prices in the country. the national average for regular, $3.42. but check this out. richmond, virginia. you're reading that correctly. gasoline there under $3 a gallon. new editions to the santa ana zoo in california. go two baby monkeys making their debuts. one, a black and white kolabus. >> are they real? >> i assume they are. the other one is a crested capuchin. neither is named yet. i have a couple of names for them, dan and bianna. >> they're so -- >> so sweet. i can't decide if that is sweet. but thank you, ron. >> i don't know what sex they are. bea yan that is a good unisex name. >> i always wanted to be a crested capuchin. >> keep them going. now to the daring and dramatic mountain rescue caught on tape. a man is extremely lucky to be alive this morning after he slipped and fell coming down a 14,000-foot peak in the rockies. a helicopter arriving to pull the climber to safety. linzie janis is here to tell us the story. >> it took a team of 20 rescuers and a highly trained helicopter pilot. this morning, the chimer is back at home after spending nearly a week in the hospital. a rescue mission so daring, it had to be completed many minutes. watch at this helicopter approaches a narrow shelf near one of colorado's highest peaks. hovering 2.6 miles above ground. as two rescue workers help 60-year-old richard walker to safety after he plunged 50 feet. >> he was bleeding from the nose and the mouth pretty profusely. and gasping deeply. >> reporter: this morning, he's recovering at home after suffering a broken jaw and broken back. >> i feel very, very lucky to be alive. i don't remember the slip. i don't remember falling pip just remember waking up. >> reporter: he and his chiming partners had just summited the more than 14,000-foot peak. five minutes into their descent, walker slipped. >> i saw his feet up in the air, cart wheeling down. i heard his head hit the rock. and, uh -- it was horrific. >> reporter: emergency dispatchers gave wilder first aid instructions. but the pair were still out of the chopper's reach. >> it was very disheartening to see the helicopters fly away and realize that they probably would not get back. that was a difficult, lonely -- soul-searching time. >> reporter: they had no choice but to move down the mountain on foot. luckily, at that moment, another group of climbers showed up with equipment to inch walker closer to ground. it took them four hours to reach the chopper. walker says he won't be hiking up any mountains that size again. his climbing partner says it scared him off as well. the pilot of that helicopter is a trained member of the colorado national guard. he trained all over the world. he had the one wheel on the rock. and the propellers that close. >> lucky he was there to save him. time to check the forecast. back to ginger zee. >> our headlines this weekend come from the pacific northwest. big rain. and big wind. two storms come in. cold fronts will bring not only heavy rain but flooding. flood watches and warnings up in a lot of places. seattle, portland, both could close in on their wettest september ever. we usually wait until october, november, even december to get this wet. there's not a lot of snow. we shouldn't see as bad of flooding. we'll watch it, the next 48 hours, up to four inches in the cascades. i don't know that the rain is that big of a problem. it's the wind on top of it. on the coast and parts of the passes. 60 to 80-mile-per-hour gusts. high wind warnings into western montana. it's something on top of the rain that will be a problem. sure we'll have ugly video tomorrow. like we did out of the rockies. record snowfall up to a foot in some places. riverton had about a half foot. really, it started to knock trees down, wires down. still very cold behind it. but the snow gone for now. 28 just south of salt lake. if you want good weather or just look at it, northeast. new york city, 71. >> so you foe, we stole this trick from josh elliott. i got one that extends. so, now it is time for our game show -- >> looks like an antenna. >> name that cloud! >> and friends, i had to go back to basics because you are just not good at this game. so -- >> that was cold. >> this is the easiest one i could pick. >> cumulonimbus. >> it's a classic monsoonal flow. >> just plain cumulus. we'll try again next week. >> next week, the answer will be cirrus. >> are we going to be put back a grade? changing the subject now, we turn to the latest front in the fast food wars. mcdonald's, responding to critics by offering more healthy options. betly liu spoke to the ceo of mcdonald's who said he went on a diet and ate mcdonald's foods and lost weight. >> reporter: the next time you walk into mcdonald's, you may hear, do you want a salad with that? ♪ two all-beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions on a sesame seed bun ♪ >> reporter: at the clinton global initiative earlier this week, the big cheese at mcd's announced in 20 of the biggest markets, customers can pick fruit over fries. thompson nose a thing or two about losing weight. he says he shed 20 pounds eating at his restaurants every day. >> some days i have a southwest salad. some days, a big mac. some days i have fries. i can't give up fries. i'll go extra on the treadmill, extra on the elliptical. it's calories in, calories out. you have to watch what you're putting in. >> reporter: moms and healthy food advocates say he's the exception, not the rule. most say a daily mcdiet means a supersized you. >> all the marketing to children is having a big impact. it's conditioning children to want soda and fries. marketing creates expectations. ♪ supersize supersize the american way ♪ >> reporter: morgan spurlock soup sized hz way to health issues in 30 days. >> fast food can be part of a healthy diet, just not every day. not every single day. you need fiber, vitamins, minera minerals. >> reporter: don is not bothered by the criticism. he says he's now giving how more choices. if you keep exercising an making the right lifestyle changes, you can enjoy his food just like he does. oh, boy. well, it's not just mcdonald's feeling the heat. burger king, pepsi, coke, they're all feeling it. years ago, president clinton helped get soft drinks out of schools. the question is, are customers going to buy this, apples, over the piping hot fries? >> reporter: this morning, authorities say one of gambling's real-life games is a real cheat. archie karas arrested in his home in vegas this week. he was caught on surveillance cameras marking cards at a plaque jack table in july. >> he had no regard for money whatsoever. no fear of having millions and losing it. >> reporter: karas may be best known for turning $50 into $40 million over three years in the '90s only to gamble it all away. he kept his poker face. >> i took the punches. i did it my way. >> reporter: when it came to plaq blackjack, inves gators say his way involved placing a mark on the back of high-value cards. small enough not to be noticed by clear enough for the trained eye of a cheater. >> there are many ways of marking cards. >> reporter: the nevada gaming control board has investigating him in the past. arresting him four times to cheating. he pleaded for lesser charges on two of them and one was d dismissed. he'll face charges of winning by fraudulent means and cheating. his extradition hearing is scheduled for monday. bianna and dan? this is the stuff of hollywood movies. >> yeah, absolutely. let's get another check of the morn's top stories with none other than ron claiborne. in the news, the clock ticking down to a government shutdown on october 1st. house republicans say they'll only approve a bill if it has provisions to defund obama care. and, take a look at this photo. capturing an historic moment. president obama speaking to iran's president, hassan rouhani. the first time in over 30 years that an american president has spoken to a leader of iran. and a report is expected today on the fire that killed 19 of the 20-man hot shots team. the report will be a result of the investigation by the state forestry division. it was an unusual sight on the allegheny river in downtown pittsburgh. a 40-foot tall rubber ducky. this is not a prank. sit actually art. a dutch artist has been displaying the giant duction along rivers all around the world. and, this just coming in now, the envelope please. this is one more thing to show you. this video we have coming to you from china. take a look at this. daredevil jeb kcorliss is doing it again. he jumped from 4,000 feet and soared between two sheer cliffs a dozen feet apart. look at that again. this is the shot from the gopro. he just makes it, flying between the two massic rock formations. it look like he could reach out and touch them. that is very scary. >> his prize, a giant rubber ducky?
