And a frightening rampage caught on tape. The angry elephant charging a safari jeep. A female out of control and rushing right for three people, she flipped over their vehicle. What caused her fury . And a good monday morning on this labor day, the day that we all pretend like were not totally upset that summer is about to go, but we do want to extend however a big welcome to the newest member of our abc family. Sara haynes haines. Hi, thank you very much. I feel like you look familiar to you. Because i look like you . No. Thank you very much. That was a compliment. Welcome, sara. We should probably apologize in advance. Welcome. Thanks. Also, a remarkable story thats happening right now, 64yearold diana nyad is just miles from the finish line. Take a look at her route from cuba to florida. She is swimming strong, they say, after 43 hours nonstop. This has been an amazing journey. Were going to hear from the people right alongside her for her every single stroke. They believe that this time is the one. This time the fifth time. She said it would be her final attempt. It is looking like she is going to get it done. But before that we are going to turn to the highstakes showdown between president obama and congress now over the exploding crisis in syria. Well have complete coverage. It starts with Abcs Jonathan Karl at the white house this morning. Good morning to you, jon. Reporter good morning. This morning, the president and the white house are promising to flood the zone making an allout effort to explain to members of congress what is at stake in syria and to urge them to authorize the president to use military force. More than 70 lawmakers, most of them fresh off vacation, filed into a secure capitol hill auditorium to hear directly from the president S National Security team. Presenting the evidence against syria. I think that its a good thing for the congress to be briefed. Reporter but its clear the white house will have to work hard to convince congress to go along with a military strike. There is skepticism from republicans its far from settled. Reporter and democrats. I would not vote for it today. There are a lot more questions that i have to have answered. Reporter one big problem for the white house, the ghosts of the iraq war. The very shoddy evidence of socalled weapons of mass destruction in iraq overshadows this situation. Reporter secretary of state john kerry made the case on five sunday talk shows predicting that congress will give the president the green light, but leaving it unclear what he will do if they dont. But what if the votes arent there . Will the president act anyway . The president of the United States has the right to take this action, doesnt have to go to congress. But if i hear you correctly youre saying the president is going to act no matter what . No, i said the president has the right to act. Reporter the president s effort to win support resumes today. Hell be meeting here at the white house with senator john mccain. He is hoping that his old 2008 rival will help him build support for this in congress. Josh . Of course, jon, we did hear some wariness from both sides of the aisle. If then president obamas going to congress to seek authorization, if there is a political means there, what happens if he does not get that authorization . We heard john kerry say he has the right to act, but whats the belief . Will he . Josh, that is the big question. I have asked several Top Administration officials about that. No direct answer. All they come back to is to say, he has the authority to. He has the ability to, but they wont say whether or not he would act without congress. A momentous day on capitol hill. Jon karl in washington, thanks for that. And josh, from the battle in washington to whats happening on the ground there, how is the president s stunning move to put off military action against syria, playing there and across the rest of the middle east . Abcs chief Foreign Correspondent terry moran has the very latest from beirut, lebanon. Terry, good morning. Reporter good morning, amy. After one day of astonishment, there is today really a drop, a dramatic drop in the level of tension in this region, like a change in the weather almost. The reservists in israel who had been called up have been told to stand down for now. The breadlines and bakeries are open once again in damascus and the Syrian Government is right back at it hurling insults at washington saying that, should a military strike come eventually, that would be tantamount to the United States cooperating with al qaeda. There are jihadist fighters opposing president bashar al assad, and it is the position of the Syrian Government that all of the rebel forces are terrorists so they say the United States is going to side with al qaeda but generally here things have gone back to normal if there is such a thing as normal in the middle east. Around the world, russia has said it does not believe the evidence that the United States has offered to prove its charges. Amy . Russia, a key ally with syria. Terry moran, thanks so much for that. But were going to turn to longdistance swimmer diana nyad, shes on the verge of fulfilling quite a dream. She is trying for a fifth and what she had said final time to become the first person to ever swim from cuba to florida without a shark cage. Now, at the moment she is closer than she has ever been before, with dangerous jellyfish that had foiled her previous attempts still held at bay, and abcs alex perez in the flesh has the latest on this attempt. What an attempt. What an attempt, guys. This could be it. This could be the big one. Josh, this time around she has a few new tools helping her cope shes been swimming for more than 44 hours and at last word less than ten miles away from reaching key west. Overnight she donned a jellyfish protection suit and paddled not only into the most dangerous part of her journey but what she hopes will be history. Lets make it all the way reporter nyad, now 64, is attempting the unthinkable again. Whoohoo reporter for the fifth time the decorated endurance swimmer is trying to navigate the strait from cuba to the florida keys without a shark cage. Its 103 miles of pure torture. But this morning shes made it further than ever before just miles from shore. Aided by a formfitting mask. A newlycreated repelling cream both designed to ward off jellyfish stings. Thanks to a strong current shes traveling nearly two miles an hour. My adrenaline is pumping very hard which means that in onehalf im excited and i feel confident. I did all the training, the body is ready, the mind is ready, and on the other hand i admit im scared. Reporter its a dream 35 years in the making. Her first attempt came back in 1978 at just 28 years old. She tried again in 2010, 2011 and twice in 2012. Each time dehydration, overwhelming exhaustion and encounters with those poisonous jellyfish have forced her to abandon her mission. I really pictured it and i knew i could do it but i just j6 couldnt get there. Reporter but this morning something seems different. A little closer. Reporter and nyads team says if anyone can do it, she can. This is what she wants to do. She has set her mind to do it and shes going to do it. Reporter now at this point shes so tired shes had to stop and tread water. Her team is on a boat following alongside her making sure shes safe and anticipate she could reach a landing point in key west by late afternoon. As you might imagine, guys, everyone is watching her and, of course, rooting for her. Boy, she could take all the time she wants at this point, alex, thank you for that. Were going to turn now to her very good friend and her lead trainer here, bonnie stoll, there on the boat encouraging her dear friend with every stroke and, again, this is a dream she chased, bonnie, for more than half her life. How is diana doing right now . Well, shes just do unbelievably well in this epic journey for the 45 team members we have here could not be more ecstatic. They are watching her get there. She is lets see, we left at 9 00 a. M. On saturday morning, we left the hemingway way marina at 9 00 a. M. And the one thing we dont here is tell time ever. All we all i personally know is every 45 minutes and 90 minutes, because thats when she drinks her water and thats when she gets fed, so i know its monday morning and i know we are over 100 miles now and the end is in sight. We are all looking at the island of key west and we should be there shes got about ten more miles to go and since shes going about two miles an hour we are looking at an end in sight and shes just she started out at 51 strokes a minute and right now shes doing 51 strokes a minute as i speak. She is on her way. Yeah, she is on her way. And, boy, next time you stop her for a sip of water, let her know we are all at her side as she, again, is set to arrive at key west and so to become the first person to ever swim from cuba to florida without a shark cage but with a whole lot of love. Bonnie stoll, we appreciate the time and again best of luck to your dear friend. Thanks a lot. Really appreciate it. Talk to you soon. Much more to come here. Key west in sight. Those last ten miles are probably the hardest. Never looked so good. Well, thats one headline. There are many other to get to. And for that we turn to Bianna Golodryga. Good morning to everyone at home. We begin with breaking news. A u. S. Military base has come under attack this morning. Taliban militants set off bombs and launched a firefight with troops in eastern afghanistan near the pakistan border. Shutting down a key supply route. But nato forces appear to have fought off the attack successfully. No Coalition Casualties are reported. Several insurgents, however, were killed. Meantime, back here in the u. S. , the fire burning in Yosemite National park is now 60 contained. Crews have confirmed it is now the fourth largest fire in californias history. It spread across more than 350 square miles. Thats larger than San Francisco, oakland and san jose combined. Turning to business news, ford has announced a major recall. 370,000 crown victoria, grand marquis and town car models are being recalled because of corrosion that could lead to a loss of steering, the problem dates back to 2005. And in the nations capital, a camera rolling as a police boat lost control in the Potomac River slamming into two other boats near georgetown. The patrol boat was apparently trying to make a uturn, incredible video. One of the boats that got hit later sank. No one, fortunately, was hurt. And former South African president Nelson Mandela spent the night at home for the first time in nearly three months. An ambulance brought him to his house in a johannesburg suburb sunday. The 95yearold remains in critical but stable condition. The same doctors who treated mandela in the hospital will now care for him at home. And staying in south africa, a wild scene for tourists on safari, they were observing these elephants when a female charged their jeep. You can see the force of that impact and she flipped the jeep over before finally retreating back to the herd. Three other people in the jeep were okay. You do not want to mess with her. What do you expect . Exactly. Yeah, you know. Good luck on your honeymoon. And finally, we here at gma have a legendary blooper reel as you know, and anything can happen on live tv but this blooper impressed even us. It happened during a College Football show on the pac12 network. Analyst ronnie lott got a little too excited about uclas win. Take a watch. By the way ooh. Oh he apparently forgot that the set was on a platform. Dont worry. Were only laughing because he wasnt hurt, josh. You can confirm he wasnt hurt. And hes one of the toughest men to ever play the game. I love how he was just like its all relative. He didnt have an elephant charge at him. Its easy to laugh but in the studio nobody is laughing. This set is on a platform as well so everybody he is okay, as well. All right. Were going to turn now to the growing concern over head injuries, in fact, in the sport of football. One family now speaking out after the landmark nfl settlement. They have filed a lawsuit after losing their son to brain injuries they say could have been prevented. Abcs linzie janis has their story. Reporter derek sheely was an academic allstar with dreams of joining the cia and a dedicated Football Player at marylands frostburg state. I play football because its the greatest game ever invented on the face of the earth. Reporter but his parents now say the sport he loved killed him. Derek was hurting, and he sought help he said, i wasnt feeling well. He said i have a headache. He was bleeding. And he was called names and sent back in, time after time. Reporter in a new lawsuit, the sheelys say their sons complaints were ignored in 2011. The fullbacks on the offense were instructed to run at full speed using leading with their helmet to run into the other fullbacks and its our understanding that these drills would be run over and over and over again oftentimes multiple times in the same day. Reporter derek suffered several blows to the head causing his forehead to bleed. But the sheelys say instead of being checked for a concussion he was bandaged and sent back on to the field. He was told to stop complaining, to stop being a sissy, in more graphic terms than ive just used. Reporter four days into practice another hard hit, he collapsed. Derek never regained consciousness. He died a week later. In one week he had sustained so much head injury, so much head trauma, that he passed away from it. They beat derek up and left him there to die. Reporter the sheelys are now suing dereks coaches, a trainer, the ncaa, and the company that made the helmet alleging, quote, egregious misconduct, false hope and a reckless disregard for player safety. While the company doesnt comment, the ncaa says its saddened by dereks death but they disagree. This is not about healing or comfort or money. Its about justice. Its about justice for derek. And its about protecting other athletes. Well, abc news also reached out to the coaches and trainer but they didnt return our calls. The university which is not named in the lawsuit told us that dereks loss continues to be felt there by all those who knew him. Such a concern, especially for young people. Something well keep an eye on. Thanks, linzie. Now to pippa middleton. Is the worlds most famous bridesmaid about to become a bride . Friends saying right now that pippa is secretly engaged and abcs lama hasan has the story. Reporter pippas handsome stockbroker boyfriend, 35yearold nico jackson, reportedly popped the question weeks ago. Right before they were pictured here canoodling at wimbledon this summer. Shes introduced him to her family and took him on holiday with william and kate. No way she would do that with someone she wasnt completely sure about. Reporter they were allegedly keeping their little secret under wraps delaying the announcement. Not wanting to steal the limelight until kate gave birth. Theres also been reports theyre in the caribbean and that they are potentially going to get engaged or have gotten engaged on holiday. Reporter after all it was little sister pippa who stole the show at the Royal Wedding with these pictures rocketing around the world. Well, sam is here with a look at your labor day forecast. Were going to start with some flooding video. I had to wrestle Bianna Golodryga to get. Arm wrestle. She wanted it for the top of the news. Were going to show you the 19 inches of rain and what can it do in taiwan after a tropical system blew through that area. How quickly take a look at that how quickly flash flooding can happen in mountain areas. We had a lot of reports and then the boulder. That rocks but does not roll over the car. Yeah, thats the video of the day, i got to tell you. We had a lot of flooding going on in the nevada area and rain in that same area, as well. For today, for your holiday, were looking at the east coast getting a pretty good soaking during the day. Most of these areas could get at least an inch of rain, maybe two. But in the southern area, that runs from memphis all the way to atlanta, to the carolinas, i think you probably could get 2 to 3 inches plus in some of those systems. Cool, refreshing pocket of air and well talk more about this when we have time later this morning but moves into the middle of the country and great lakes, as well. Thats the weather around the nation. Good monday morning. Im abc7 news meteorologist mike nicco with your bay area microclimate forecast. Sprinkles possible this labor day but dont change your plans. It is a highly respected Elementary School principal who is now accused of killing her husband, gunning him down and abandoning his body in a field. Police say they have the evidence and the murder weapon. Abcs aditi roy has the story. Reporter for years leslie jenea chance was the quiet hardworking and wellliked principal and assistant principal at Fairview Elementary in bakersfield, california. Reporter police tell abc news they now believe jenea chance fired multiple gunshots into her husband on sunday, august 25th, and while investigators say they have the murder weapon, they do not appear to have a motive. For Good Morning America, aditi roy, abc news, los angeles. We turn now to Michael Jacksons mother speaking out about granddaughter paris in her first nation interview since her granddaughters apparent Suicide Attempt. Katherine jackson very candid about paris road to recovery and revealing new details about her evolving relationship with her biological mother and abcs alex perez as that story. I guess she was suffering and we didnt know it. Reporter Katherine Jackson revealing for the first time her granddaughters secret struggles confirming with 60 minutes australia what was reported as a apparent Suicide Attempt was, in fact, real. Odd on 20 motrin and cut her arm with a kitchen knife. It is reported she tried to commit suicide, is that true . I think she might have. She didnt know how but, yes, it is. But when michael died, paris was screaming and crying and saying, i want to go with you daddy. I dont want to live without you. Reporter in the interview granted to australias channel 9, after the station made a donation to the Jackson Family charity, the matriarch describes michaels death in 2009 as a seemingly incomprehensible loss to his three children. They went back in that morgue where michael was about ten times hugging michael and kissing him and, you know, he was dead but they were still doing that. Reporter the 83yearold admitting the difficulty in raising three children at her age and detailing the void left in paris life. She had to have his pictures everywhere in her room, every picture that was hanging on the wall had to be michael. Reporter katherine says the 15yearold is still seeking treatment and is now working on building her relationship with debbie rowe, the biological brother prince. She understands these kids have a loss and having their birth mother available did a huge comfort to the kids and to her. Reporter on thursday the Jackson Family gathered outside michaels childhood home in gary, indiana, celebrating what would have been his 55th birthday, a loss katherine will never forget. Its like having a ring and one diamond missing. And you never can replace it. Reporter for Good Morning America, alex perez, abc news, new york. Alex, thank you for that. And now to the rise of the popular and potent drug thats believed to be responsible for two deaths at a major Music Festival this weekend. It forced the festival to shut down and it raised a lot of questions right now. Abcs Bianna Golodryga is back with more on that, bianna, this is about a new designer drug. A lot of people are talking about this, amy. The deaths are bringing fresh attention to molly, what is supposed to be a pure version of ecstasy, which has become the drug of the moment. Molly is in not only with kids who like dance music but also celebrity 30 and 40something professionals. For some attracted to the flashing lights and throbbing beats at the electric zoo festival in new york city, the designer drug molly may have seemed like the perfect accompaniment, but this morning after two deaths and four others being hospitalized at the festival, the rapid rise of this new drug is now under the microscope. On sunday festival organizers agreed to cancel the final day of the weekendlong event. Last tuesday, at bostons house of blues, another person died and two others hospitalized, apparently after the use of molly. They believe its not harmful or addictive and that there really wouldnt be any adverse side effects. Reporter mdma, or molly as its known in the trendy club dance scene, has become the hot drug of the moment seemingly embraced by big name celebrities and even embraced in song. Miley cyrus caused a stir with those lyrics in her new single we cant stop. When asked if she was singing about the drug she told a british newspaper if you know what im talking about then you know. Even 55yearold madonna made waves last year at a Music Festival in miami after asking her audience how many people in this crowd have seen molly . Reporter she later claimed she was referring to a song, not the drug. Molly, short for molecule, is a highly potent powdered form of mdma, one ingredient used in ecstasy pills. It is not physically addictive, making it more socially acceptable, from club kids to yuppies, but experts say its not only not pure, its dangerous. They dont know whats in it. They dont know how much to use. Its such a big risk. Reporter but now, after three highprofile deaths in under two weeks, this morning many are asking if a drug many thought of as designer may also be deadly. And interestingly enough this drug was discovered in 1914 and it was used as a diet drug and of course now its being used for all the wrong reasons and its a conversation parents should have with their kids now. Especially in light of this tragedy. Thank you for that, bianna. Sam. Well track the tropics. Here we are, this is the first time, since 2002, that we but we dont so lets look at what we think we might have before the end of the week and could be gabrielle but area of low pressure that its given a track or path and we basically believe this thing does have the warm water to strengthen a little bit. Its given it a 50 opportunity to strengthen. By the weekend we find whatever this low is, whatever shape it is as gabrielle is a tropical low, somewhere in the bahamas stirring up rain and well keep an eye on it. Weve talked about the rain on the east coast but now on the west coast, this is some very heavy rain thats caused flooding already in a lot of places in arizona, new mexico is involved in some of that today. Some of the heaviest rain will be from Salt Lake City curving all the way around a little north of boise about 1 to 2 inches of rain but leaving the west coast fairly dry. Heres where the heat is today good morning. Im mike nicco. We have some sprinklings possible through about noon, partly sunny this afternoon, temperatures just a little bit below average. But first, this is a story i have been looking forward to bringing you, inspirational and a High School Athlete who suffered what for anyone would be a devastating injury. It could have, maybe should have ended his chances of ever playing sports again. Look whos making the return to the field this weekend defying all the odds. On the field koni dole wears number 7, which for some, very lucky. For him its a fitting, if not coincidental journey assignment, because lucky is just how he says he feels after overcoming what many assumed would be a dreamshattering loss. Why does this have to happen to me . I know what it feels like to have a last game or what i thought was my last play. Reporter what dole thought would be his last play happened just 11 months ago during a game in worden, montana. His leg snapped at the knee and after several emergency surgeries became so infected doctors gave him a very sobering choice. Either keep the leg and risk further illness or lose a part of himself. As soon as i found out i might have to amputate, i looking up amputees that play sports and made the promise i was going to be back out on the field. Reporter dole would soon be fitted with a prosthetic, a piece of flexible carbon fiber where his shin, calf and foot once were. For some learning to walk naturally would be difficult, but dole didnt give up. And within three months he was back wrestling for his high school, and by last spring he was running track. A lot of people dont see the process he goes through getting ready for practice, taking care of the leg after practice, you know, taking care of the skin. Even though the pain was excruciating and just forcing myself to do the Little Things probably got me to where i am right now. Reporter but there was one last place he wanted to get more than anything, back on the football field, back to the game hes loved since birth. The doctors were telling me that i would never play football again, so i just kind of had that in the back of my head like, you know, i was like kind of driving me. Reporter and then the moment he had been waiting for. Less than one year after his amputation, dole made his comeback this weekend, the boy with the bionic leg, not just playing but running for two scores and helping his team win the game. For dole, the moment was surreal. And just to overcome all this and to be back on the field with my teammates is just, you know, probably the best feeling ive ever had. And this morning he is showing no signs of slowing down. His dream school, montana state, just offered him a chance to walk on and his future like those friday night lights looking brighter than ever. [ cheers and applause ] when i first heard the story, i thought, you know, its a thing where the other team is sort of letting him score because he wanted to get back out. Hes playing. Hes contributing. Hes just a person. It is a remarkable thing, and, koni dole, heres to you. Heres to you, my friend. True courage. Taking all the hits. I mean, hes out there really honestly playing the game and showing that you can, and thats an amazing thing. Sam, i want to say ill miss summer, however, this this is cool.
