All five linn county buildings closed by flood 2016 2016are now back open for business this morning. Morning. The Jean Oxley Public Service Center and the linn county courthouse are on the li. List. The 16th avenue bridge between Czech Village and newbo is now back open too. Organizers decided to cancel this years bacon fest at newbo city market this coming saturday. All tickets will be refunded. Organizers tell cbs 2 news the bacon lovers festival will return next year. Ushers ferry historic is cleaning up after the flood waters caused damage last week. Workers say theyre lucky because water only flowed into 4 buildings. Thats a lot less than in 2008 when they had to tear down 16 buildings. To prepare this time around staff and volunteers removed everything from buildings that could be impacted. This time , they say nothing was destroyed and the repairs are relatively minor. These 2 buildings will have to have 2 feet of drywall cut out and then well check out the floor but we think theyre shape so well air them out power wash them clean them up and fix them up. Up. Something that they are really thankful for is that no planned events were disrupted by the flood. They even held 2 weddings on some of the Higher Ground there. Anyone with leftover sandbags from flood protection listen up. Cedar rapids city workers are planning to pick them up for free starting next week. Curbside pickup starts next monday and will take two weeks to complete. Again there is no cost for the pickup. Gove be needed to recover from the recent flooding. Flooding. The state can request a federal disaster declaration if costs are higher than fourpointthree million dollars. Right now iowa Homeland Security is working with local and county governments to collect damage estimates. My guess is based on what i have seen and the Lieutenant Governor and i did extensive touring on the areas i believe we will far exceed the threshold to get designation. President obama has already declared eight counties in northeast iowa a federal disaster for flooding last month. The Greater Cedar Rapids Community foundation has now activated a fund for victims of flood 2016. Organizers are collecting money to be awarded to local nonprofits helping recovery efforts. A train hit a sunday afternoon in alburnett. The Linn County Sheriffs Office says it happened at an uncontrolled Railroad Crossing that doesnt have arms or flashing lights. They say its important for drivers to pay close attention to road signs, and always slow down when aprroaching a sign with a cross on it. A bill designed to fix the Veterans Crisis line unanimously passed a house vote. Vote. But one of the bills sponsors iowa congressman david young says there is a lot of work to actually turn the bill into law. The Third District representative says the legislation is stalled in the senate. He hosted a roundtable discussion with local veterans and Mental Health professionals on monday. After haiti the massive storm is expected to pass over parts of cuba. 350thousand cubans have already been evacua. Evacuated. The United States is not taking chances either theyve already flown about 700 family members of military personnel that were stationed at guantanamo bay. In Coralville Police say an Armed Robbery caused an elementary scho security on monday. Authorities say one suspect pulled out a gun and demanded money from a man and a woman. Right now authorities are trying to get more information about the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call crime stoppers. Alliant energy is apologizing to iowa customers for their billing process during the hot double checked by alliant representatives. Customers complained on social media saying they were charged hundreds of dollars more per month. Alliant stresses that the bills are accurate, but want to help customers pay their bills by spreading the cost out over the next 12 months. Cedar rapids mayor ron corbett is now encouraging folks to come down to some of these Small Businesses in the flood zone to help them get back on their feet. Its extremely critical, you know these Small Businesses dont have really high margins in their businesses and so one weeks worth of revenue really can make or break not just a mnth but a quarter or their year. Later today the mayor will announce the cr gavel challeng. Challenge. It will allow people to post pictures of themselves supporting local flood zone businesses.
