big crash crashalong interstate 80 near west branch sunday. sunday.it shut down the west bound lanes while crews cleared the crash site. site.viewers sent us these waiting in a long line of cars. right now -- the state patrol says three *separate crashes happened involving more than 30 cars.three people were hurt but authorities are not saying how seriously.all three collisions are being investigated. in central iowa -- a man was seriously injured while riding a snow-mobile. mobile.35-year-old damoin louk was driving along highway 30 just west of boone at about 60-miles-per-hour when the left front ski caught deep snow -- throwing him 150 feet off the snowmobile.his helmet came off during the accident and he was flown to a des moines hospital.right now multiple agencies are investigating. developing news this morning on the death of supreme court justice antonin scalia.the top elected official in the texas county where scalia was found dead now says scalia died of natrual causes. causes.because of that -- scalia's family has decided against an autopsy.the 79-year-old was found unresponsive on saturday -- officials are now saying he scalia's body was transported from an el paso funeral home to virginia. his death has already started a major political battle between the two parties. parties.justice scalia was a leading conservative voice on the high court, and now his successor could tilt the balance either way. way.cbs 2 news reporter stephanie johnson joins us now to explain. explain.that's right guys, president barack obama says he plans to nominate a possible successor in due time, but republican leaders in congress insist the next president should make that decision.most presidential republican candidates called for senate leaders to block or delay a vote on the possible nomination at the cbs debate on saturday night.however, both hillary clinton and bernie sanders, both quickly backed the president, saying there's no reason he should not nominate the next justice. but the president is pushing forward. "there will be plenty of time for mine for me to do so and plenty of time for the senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and timely vote. these are responsibilities that i everyone."the president took about a month to nominate two previous supreme court justices.right now, the senate is taking a week off for the president's day holiday. stephanie johnson, cbs 2 news. thanks stephanie.. a judge with ties to the corridor could be on the short list to fill that opening.. jane kelly is a federal appeals court judge, but before that she served as a federal public defender in cedar rapids.even before that she was a classmate of the president at harvard.kelly is also a survivor of a viscious attack along a cedar rapids running trail in 2004.this is video of kelly one year after that attack, no arrests were ever made. former president george w. bush will be hitting the campaign trail today for the first time in over a decade. decade.he'll be stumping for his younger brother today in south carolina -- a state whose primary both bush presidents won on their way to the oval office.during the latest g-o-p debate -- jeb bush had to defend george when donald trump attacked some of while in office -- like the iraq invasion. president barack obama spoke with russian president vladimir putin over the phone on sunday about the syria peace talks -- and standing together against terrorism.the kremlin said both support the cease-fire in syria and that putin stressed the need to build a solid working relationship between the defense ministries in both countries to fight terrorism. they say the phone call was initiated by the united states. new this morning -- new york senator chuck schumer is pushing the president to reconsider proposed funding cuts to counter-terrorism programs across the country.current proposals take away almost 300- million dollars and schumer is calling them "ill-advised and ill-timed."some of the money helps run programs in cities across the u-s to prevent attacks or respond and recover from them. human trafficking is often considered an invisible crime. police say the corridor is a cross roads for the crime. crime. they say our location, in the middle of larger midwest cities, makes eastern iowa a frequent stop for and that's why a local group is working so hard to help those whose lives are turned upside down by the crime.the group 'cedar rapids gives' has been working since 20-13 to give survivors extended services like counseling, clothes and shelter. hurt. right now -- the two officers are in stable condition. in northwe mississippi, an officer is now in critical condition, after he was shot in the head while investigating a robbery across the street from a police station.the officer was found on the street outside of a convenience store that had been robbed by two masked men. right now, police are questioning two men in custody. authorities in urbandale still have not released any names connected to a fatal police shooting over the weekend. weekend.it all started early saturday morning when officers were called to a hotel for a drug complaint.police say when officers arrived -- a man pulled out a gun and fired. officers returned fire and killed the suspect before arresting two other people at the scene.this mornng -- the shooting is still being investigated. the colorado planned parenthood where three people were killed back in november, will open this morning.the colorado springs branch is opening part of its building for services. services.right now, crews are that will cause the number of patients the clinic can treat to be limited for a few months. the president of that region's planned parenthood said they wanted to follow through on a promise to open as soon as possible, adding that there will be heavy security today. a man in oregon is miraculously expected to survive after he was pulled into a working wood chipper. chipper.that's according to rescue officials.they say the man's harness got stuck in tree limbs that were fed into the chipper, and then got yanked into the machine...but his leg tripped the safety bar in the last moment and shut the chipper off.officials say chipper blades were just inches away from his head when the machine stopped.the victim still broke his leg and suffered got stuck 40-feet above the ground in new hampshire. hampshire.officials say a service break issue stopped the tramway sunday the tramway sunday afternoon..rescue workers had to repell 48 passengers to the ground one-by-one.officials don't know what caused the cars to get stuck -- but they don't believe it was because of low temperatures. earthquake in taiwan.. taiwan..one week after a 6-point-4 nook and the kindle made a lot of people think bookstores would become a thing of the past. past.but new data from the u-s census bureau shows bookstores are becoming more popular. bookstore sales increased by year -- from 10-point-nine- billion-dollars to 11- point-two-billion.that's the first year-to-year increase for the industry since 2007. publishers weekly first reported the figures -- and said many publishers saw a decline in e-book sales last year -- while print sales went up. nordstrom nordstrom will now be accepting returns from its discount store -- nordstrom rack. rack.that big crash crashalong interstate 80 near west branch sunday. sunday.it shut down the west bound lanes while crews cleared the crash site. site.viewers sent us these waiting in a long line of cars. right now -- the state patrol says three *separate crashes happened involving more than 30 cars.three people were hurt but authorities are not saying how seriously.all three collisions are being investigated. in central iowa -- a man was seriously injured while riding a snow-mobile. mobile.35-year-old damoin louk was driving along highway 30 just west of boone at about 60-miles-per-hour when the left front ski caught deep snow -- throwing him 150 feet off the snowmobile.his helmet came off during the accident and he was flown to a des moines hospital.right now multiple agencies are investigating. developing news this morning on the death of supreme court justice antonin scalia.the top elected official in the texas county where scalia was found dead now says scalia died of natrual causes. causes.because of that -- scalia's family has decided against an autopsy.the 79-year-old was found unresponsive on saturday -- officials are now saying he scalia's body was transported from an el paso funeral home to virginia. his death has already started a major political battle between the two parties. parties.justice scalia was a leading conservative voice on the high court, and now his successor could tilt the balance either way. way.cbs 2 news reporter stephanie johnson joins us now to explain. explain.that's right guys, president barack obama says he plans to nominate a possible successor in due time, but republican leaders in congress insist the next president should make that decision.most presidential republican candidates called for senate leaders to block or delay a vote on the possible nomination at the cbs debate on saturday night.however, both hillary clinton and bernie sanders, both quickly backed the president, saying there's no reason he should not nominate the next justice. but the president is pushing forward. "there will be plenty of time for mine for me to do so and plenty of time for the senate to fulfill its responsibility to give that person a fair hearing and timely vote. these are responsibilities that i everyone."the president took about a month to nominate two previous supreme court justices.right now, the senate is taking a week off for the president's day holiday. stephanie johnson, cbs 2 news. thanks stephanie.. a judge with ties to the corridor could be on the short list to fill that opening.. jane kelly is a federal appeals court judge, but before that she served as a federal public defender in cedar rapids.even before that she was a classmate of the president at harvard.kelly is also a survivor of a viscious attack along a cedar rapids running trail in 2004.this is video of kelly one year after that attack, no arrests were ever made. former president george w. bush will be hitting the campaign trail today for the first time in over a decade. decade.he'll be stumping for his younger brother today in south carolina -- a state whose primary both bush presidents won on their way to the oval office.during the latest g-o-p debate -- jeb bush had to defend george when donald trump attacked some of while in office -- like the iraq invasion. president barack obama spoke with russian president vladimir putin over the phone on sunday about the syria peace talks -- and standing together against terrorism.the kremlin said both support the cease-fire in syria and that putin stressed the need to build a solid working relationship between the defense ministries in both countries to fight terrorism. they say the phone call was initiated by the united states. new this morning -- new york senator chuck schumer is pushing the president to reconsider proposed funding cuts to counter-terrorism programs across the country.current proposals take away almost 300- million dollars and schumer is calling them "ill-advised and ill-timed."some of the money helps run programs in cities across the u-s to prevent attacks or respond and recover from them. human trafficking is often considered an invisible crime. police say the corridor is a cross roads for the crime. crime. they say our location, in the middle of larger midwest cities, makes eastern iowa a frequent stop for and that's why a local group is working so hard to help those whose lives are turned upside down by the crime.the group 'cedar rapids gives' has been working since 20-13 to give survivors extended services like counseling, clothes and shelter. suspected of shooting two police officers died in a hospital. hospital.22-year-old calvin smith is accused of shooting two officers with a rifle they returned fire -- they aren't sure how smith got hurt. right now -- the two officers are in stable condition. in northwe mississippi, an officer is now in critical condition, after he was shot in the head while investigating a robbery across the street from a police station.the officer was found on the street outside of a convenience store that had been robbed by two masked men. right now, police are questioning two men in custody. authorities in urbandale still have not released any names connected to a fatal police shooting over the weekend. weekend.it all started early saturday morning when officers were called to a hotel for a drug complaint.police say when officers arrived -- a man pulled out a gun and fired. officers returned fire and killed the suspect before arresting two other people at the scene.this mornng -- the shooting is still being investigated. the colorado planned parenthood where three people were killed back in november, will open this morning.the colorado springs branch is opening part of its building for services. services.right now, crews are that will cause the number of patients the clinic can treat to be limited for a few months. the president of that region's planned parenthood said got stuck 40-feet above the ground in new hampshire. hampshire.officials say a service break issue stopped the tramway sunday the tramway sunday afternoon..rescue workers had to repell 48 passengers to the ground one-by-one.officials don't know what caused the cars to get stuck -- but they don't believe it was because of low temperatures. earthquake in taiwan.. taiwan..one week after a 6-point-4
