Were able to do twice as much work on our streets easily than what we were doing prior to having local option sales tax available. Wilson says lane closures and detours may be inconvenient, but the new roads will last for decades. Right now, the dot is looking for the best way to upgrade iowas longest road. A study of interstate 80 is focusing on weather impacts and maintenance costs, as well as new ideas like truckonly lanes. They hope to outline a final plan next year. Cedar Rapids School district leaders are now adding their voice to the debate over Education Funding in iowa, iowa,the district is now releasing a new worksheet showing how much funding is needed just to maintain their current programs. It shows that even though enrollment is flat staffing is lower than it was five years ago. The district says it needs a 3point7 percent increase from the state the governor has only proposed a 2. 5 district wants parents to reach out to lawmakers. We want great learning environment for our students and we want to provide the opportunities and programming that we currently do, and better hope, would be that we could provide even more opportunities for our kids. Women. Cedar Rapids Police told cbs 2 news they recommend no one go to any of the sites listed online. For the first time in us military history all combat roles are now open to women. Women. Guys, this decision will allow women to fill two hundred twenty thousand jobs that were previously limited to just men. Men. It also means women will be able to fill seventeen hundred roles in the Iowa National guard. Defense secretary Ash Carter Says as long as women qualify and meet the standards, they will be able to contribute. However, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff believes combat roles should be limited to men. The Cedar Rapids Freedom Foundation executive director, chuck elias, feels differently. I think certainly theres physical limitations but i surely know this ive known female Service Members that could out shoot me out run me. Me. Now that the combat positions are open to women, the next step for top military officials is deciding if women should be required to register for Selective Service at 18 years old. A bill introduced by state senator Mark Chelgren would keep that ban in place until stanford publicly apologizes for its halftime show at the rose bowl. Bowl. A stanford Spokesman Says the school regrets the performance but says it was intended to be irreverant fun. Another bill making its way through the State Capitol would legalize the sale of fire works in iowa. Iowa. A Senate Committee approved a bill allowing the sale of firecrackers and roman candles. Candles. Right now only novelties like sparklers can be sold in iowa. Iowa. The new legislation would also allow cities to choose if they want to make the change. Change. Cedar falls democrat Jeff Danielson says that provision makes the law unenforceable. Similar bills have been proposed multiple times in the past few years. News is tracking legislation that would force drivers to move over for bicycles. The senate is working to adopt the rule as state law. If it goes through it would keep drivers from getting too close to people riding their bikes on roadways and in bike lanes. The Iowa Bicycle Coalition is lobbying for the new legislation. The iowa lottery and Multistate Lottery Association are now facing the first of potentially several lawsuits. Lawsuits. Its all in connection to the ongoing case surrounding eddie tipton. In july, the former Security Director was convicted of fraud for rigging lottery computers to collect a multiMillion Dollar jackpot. A lawsuit filed on behalf of larry dawson seeks ten Million Dollars. It claims a nine Million Dollar jackpot he won should have been nearly three times as big, had it not been for tiptons actions. Tipton is also accused of rigging jackpots in other states. The lawsuits could cost the iowa lottery and others tens of millions of dollars. New this morning, wisconsin authorities investigating two bomb threats say they are connected to the murderer. The Manitowoc County Sheriffs Office says a male caller said he was getting justice for steven avery the man at the center of the netflix series.
