Shots were fired just after 1 00 a. M. And thats when investigators found officer martin gunned down in his vehicle. 20 minutes later, just 2 miles way, they found sergeants beminio shot as well. He was taken to the hospital and did not make it. The officers had no warning about what was coming. What we can tell from looking at the scene is that it doesnt appear that either officer had opportunity to interact with the suspect. It doesnt look like there was an exchange of conversation here there definitely was not an opportunity for the officers to defend themselves or to respond to the attack. Reporter before the suspect was taken into custody this morning, scott greene flagged identified himself and asked them to call 911. He did not have a gun on himself at the time. It is were members of the community have come to grief and pay respects. Officer martin was 24 years old and higher just a year ago. His police chief says that the gunmen fired up to 31 up to he is a graduate of iowa city west. The principal says he was a state champion in wrestling and he played on the Championship High School football team. He leaves a wife and children. , Des Moines Police department side, there was Sergeant Anthony beminio. He goes by tony. Hes a great guy in the department and a friend to a lot of us. A fantastic family man. It is really hard. Hometown is an rockwell city, iowa. We had High Expectations for his future and it has tragically been cut short. To were hit and killed two were hit and killed by a drunk driver going the wrong way on the interstate. In this mornings press conference, Urbandale Police chief Ross Mccarthy said most Police Officers in the area are familiar with greene. Hes been arrested on several times for misdemeanors. Once for resisting arrest but he was later released on bond. Police have also been called out to video allegedly filmed by the suspect. In the video seen here a man believed to be greene claims he was assaulted by the officers and by people in the stands of a High School Sporting event. The officers say they escorted him out of the stadium after receiving a number of complaints of him waiving a confederate flag. The video was posted midoctober. Another neighbor heard that he also served in the military from others who were closer to are friendly so waking up to this news and having a swat team just feet away from their home surrounding the home where they say greene lived was tough.
