[ cheers and applause ] >> for the democrats it was bernie sanders in a landslide. the vote was a powerful rejection of hillary clinton. who won in new hampshire in the primary in 2008. she its now looking to bounce back in south carolina. both candidates spoke to their supporters. >> we have sent the message that washington, from maine to california. [ cheers and applause ] and that is -- that the government of our great country belongs to all of the people and not just a handful of wealthy campaign contributors and their superpacs. [ cheers and applause ] nine months ago we began our campaign here in new hampshire. we had no campaign organization. we had no money. and we were taking on the most powerful political organization in the united states of america. and tonight with what appears to be a record breaking voter because of a huge voter turnout and i say huge -- we won. because we harnessed the energy and the excitementhat the democratic party will need to succeed in november. >> i want to begin by -- congratulating senator sanders on his victory tonight( and i want to thank each and every one of you. new hampshire and i always will. and here's what we are going to do -- now we take this campaign to the entire country. we are going to fight for every vote and every state.. we are going to fight for real solutions that make a real almost sixty million americans are affected by mental illness. together we can help them with three simple words. my name is chris noth and i will listen. from maine to maui, thousands of high school students across the country are getting in on the action by volunteering in their communities. chris ung: action teams of high school students are joining volunteers of america and major league baseball players to help train and inspire the next generation of volunteers. so you, too, can get in on the action. if you were a hippie in the '60s, you need to know. it's the dning of the age of aquarius. yeah, and something else that's cool. what? osteoporosis is preventable. all: osteo's preventable? right on! if you dig your bones, protect them. all: cbs cares! it doesn't look like the weather dampened the turnout as a storm dropped 7 inches of snow. that's nothing new hampshire can't handle. another storm moving up the east coast made a mess in maryland. flooding the big concece along the coast. there was a terrible c2ash two commuter trains were put on the same track. automatic braking systems failed. and they hit head-on. at least 10 people were killed. zens injured. some air lift to hospitals. others taken buy boat. no word yet on how the trains were switched off to the same track. tonight, a cbs news investigation into what is said to be a revolutionary blood test to detect cancer. even before a patient notices symptoms. several companies are racing to develop this, but are some of them promising more than they can deliver. jim axelrod and producer emily grande looked into this. >> reporter: at this health care conference in silicon valley a few weeks ago, biotech pioneers, pitched latest and greatest in personalized health care. >> this has the the potential to totally change not just cancer, klausner, director of grail, a company developing a blood test for cancer, known as a liquid biopsy. >> somebody with no symptoms could get their blood drawn? >> exactly. >> reporter: you could determine if they have cancer. >> the holy grail. >> reporter: the idea hold great promise. klausner says proving it works will take time. >> we just don't have the clinical data yet. we have to get it. >> reporter: there is a lot of incentive, the liquid biopsy market is e eected to be worth $22 billion by 2020. another company after a piece of it, san diego based pathway genomics. pathway raised $40 million in its last round of fund-raising >ike the most amazing thing. >> reporter: and raised its profiles when one genetic test was featured on "keeping up with the kardashians." >> hi, how are you. >> mitch mulinex. with pathway genomics. nice to meet you. >> reporter: what caught our attention, the test launched in >> introducing pathway genomics revolutionary test cancer intercept detect and monitor. >> reporter: a ailable by physician order for as little as $299, pathway's marketing claimed it could do what others say is years away. >> cancer intercept can detect a growing tumor in the body.% before a patient notices symptoms. >> a few weeks ago we visited pathway to ask them about their claims. befofo we sat down with the ceo, jim plant. they played us the marketing video. >> we just watched a video upstairs. it says the liquid biopsy will detect cancer before symptoms. >> may, may. it says it may. we don't say will. we say may. >> reporter: you don't make the claim that you can detect cancer? >> we say, the information can early diagnosis. >> reporter: we also asked plant about this chart showing advantages of their liquid biopsy over a traditional tissue biopsy. this chart looks like any other chart, doesn't it? >> it's not an either/or. >> tumor biopsy. it is an additional tool in the toolbox. one piece of information t tt helps guide, guide, the, the physician, patient discussion. >> while good to have extra tools. that doesn't mean weep should be using them on the patient outside research settings. >> reporter: dr. max dean cancer researcher at stanford. pathway cites his research as evidence their test can detect caer in otherwise healaly patients. >> i think we are still years away from that possibility. >> reporter: years? >> years. that absolutely requires thousands of patients and long term trials to prove that. >> reporter: thousands of millions of dollars. >> correct. >> reporter: if a company isn't doing any of the three. >> i've don't think i would order the test. >> the food and drug administration tells us it considers tests like cancer intercept a health risk. they sent ape letter citing concerns the test did not have adequate clinical validation and may harm the public. and pathway has tests under way. after our interview, pathway did pull that promotional data from its website. >> jim, thank you very much. great report. you are probably wondering how the companies are able to sell unproven tests. jim will have more on that on "cbs this morning." federal health officials sent hundreds of kits to florida to test for the zika virus. 16 cases are confirmed there. there are 64 cases in 16 states and district of columbia. zika spread by mosquitoes and suspected of causing a serious birth defect. will the rocket mortgage take off? knockout. the political outsider notches a crowded republican field in the nation's first presidential primary. >> thank you, new hampshire! >> while bernie sanders turns the democratic race on its head by sweeping to a decisive victory over hillary clinton. a cross-country flight makes an unscheduled stop. police have to pull a passenger off a plane when he becomes too much for the flight crew york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. donald trump and bernie sanders were big winners in the new hampshire primary. the two establishment outsiders coasted to victory riding a wave of voter dissatisfaction after the little known senator from vermont, easley defeated hillary clinton. and trump needed a win after a surprising second-place finish in iowa, trounced the rest of the republican field. we begin with major garrett who is covering the trump campaign. >> he crushed his republican rivals in new hampshire winning here the way he has led many, many months bybyulling together differenenparts of the republican party and essentially becoming a galvanizeing voice for hostility with thehe republicic party leaders inside the beltway. >> we are going to do something so good and so fast and so strong, and the world is going to respect us again, believe me. >> reporter: trump appealed republican voters have had it with the current political system. nearly 90% of republican voters said they are angry or dissatisfied with washington, d.c. >> we are going to build a wall. it's going to be built. it's not even, believe it or not, it's not even a difficult >> reporter: trump's controversial proposal of banning all muslims from entering the u.s. resonated in new hampshire. 64% of voters agreed with him. ohio governor john kasich poured campaign resources into new hahashire and came in sesend. >> maybe, just maybe, we are turning the page on a dark part of american politics because, tonight, the light overcame the darkness of negative c cpaigns! >> reporter: ted cruz and marco rubio and jeb bush battled for third as the campaign now heads to south carolina, where trump's outsiders ideas will facacnew and tougher scrutiny. >> i thank you all very much. >> after a sixth place finish in new hampshire, chris christie is heading home to take a deep breath and take stock of his campaign. major garrett, cbs news, manchester, new hampshire. >> we will talk to donald trump about his big win in new when he joins us in the studio, coming up on "cbs this morning." on the democratic side, bernie sanders enjoyed overwhelming support from young voters and those who describe themselves as liberal. new hampshire women favored sanders by an 11-point marginn and moderates broke sanders way by nearly 20 points. nancy cordes is covering the tightening democratic race. >> reporter: sanders proved here in new hampshire he can no longer be considered a fringe candidate by anyone. he still faces an uphill climb to the nomination, but his big win here, along with his recent fund-raising prowess shows he is a serious challenger to hillary clinton. >> thank you, new hampshire! >> reporter: near record turnout and an electorate is becoming more liberal, both worked to sanders' advantage here in new >> because of a yuge voter turnout,8and i say yuge! weweon. >> reporter: cbs news exit polling data shows nearly two-thirds of voters here believe sanders, a self-described democratic issues. less than a third said he is too liberal, while nearly a third said hillary clinton is not liberal enough. >> the right wing republicans, we oppose, must not be allowed to gain the presidency. >> now we take this campaign to the entire country. we are going to fight for every vote in every state! >> reporter: there was no comeback in the cards for clinton. just as in iowa, she struggled to win the support of young voters. >> i know i have some work to do, particularly with young people. >> reporter: clinton's e-mail controversy appeared to have turned off some granite state voters. the quality that mattered most to voters was whether or not the candidate was honest and trustworthy. democrats said sanders has that qualitit while less than halal felt that way y out clinton. >> african-american parents shouldn't have to worry that their children will be harassed, humiliated, even shot because of the color their skin. >> reporter: now she is spinning her hopes on gaining the support of black and hispanic voters in upcoming states. her campaign sent out a memo last night touting her appeal among minorities, saying a democrat cn't win the white house without the support of those constituencies. sanders now has a lot of momentum hding into nevada and south carolina, the next contests on the calendar. but he will need to increase his support among minority voters in those states. that's something he can discuss over breakfast this morning at the famed sylvia's restaurant in harlem with the reverend al sharpton. nancy cordes, cbs news, concord, new hampshire. as the focus of the campaign switches to the first southern primary, south carolina, cbs "face the nation" moderator john dickerson looks at what happened and what comes next. >> reporter: out is in in the new hampshire primary. ininoth parties, outsiders beat the republican establishment. on the republican side, donald trump had two victories. he trounced his closest opponent and his opposition is more split than ever. now he heads to south carolina where he is ahead by double digits in the polls. on the democratic side, bernie sanders is running a crusade more than a campaign and that kind of a crusade requires huge numbers of foot soldiers. his victory in new hampshire showed that he could get them. he won across the board, even doing well among women voters, beating hillary clinton in a group that she should do well in. he'll get totoleep next door in vermont in his home tonight, which he'll need. he'll need that rest, because in south carolina, there are fewer liberal voters and there are more voters of color, a group at he has difficultytyith. manchester. john dickerson will moderate the next republican debate this saturday night at 9:00 p.m. eastern from south carolina. the royal caribbean cruise ip anthem of the seas i scheduled to dock in new jersey tonight. the ship was forced to cut short its cruise after sailing into a fierce storm. florida senator bill nelson wants to know why the ship sailedednto a storm that hadad been forecast t r days and calling for a federal investigation. german authorities are trying to figure out why safety systems failed before a collision of two commuter trains. at least ten were killed and 80 hurt yesterday when the trains crashed about 40 miles from munich. two engineers are among the dead. city council of ferguson, missouri. the justice department found racism in the city's courts and police department in ferguson in 2014. the councilil sayay "the washington post" it would require existing power plants cut their carbon dioxide emissions by a third by 2030. the associated press reports that kentucky clerk kim davis obeying a federal c crt order that sent her to jail fofofive days. davis refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses despite supreme court's legalization of marriage equality. she relented by providing "sports illustrated" reports u.s. goalkeeper hope solo says she would not go to the olympics over fears of the zika virus which may cause birth defects. solo said she would never take an unnecessary risk of having an unhealthy child. the 2016 games begin in august in brazil where the zika virus is spreading rapidly.
