"we had a pretty large outbreak. we were the first site of mumps in that whole campus outbreak."."lisa james remembers when there were hundreds of reported mumps cases nine years ago. she says this time, she feels the university is responding quickly. quickly. "this time we're reacting faster and taking actions faster and communicating better so certainly we are reactiti in a different way." u-i announced it will offer the m-m-r vaccine for free two times next week. james says they're trying to get all the students their third dose before thanksgiving break. break. "it takes a couple weeks for munity from the mmr vaccines so we're trying to get them to get the vaccine before thanksgiving and before they travel to their families or travel on airplaves and spread the dieases farther."she says it's a requirement for students to have two doses of the m-m-r vaccine befe they move into the dorms or r attend the university.all of the students who came in complaining of symptoms related to the mumps, already had two m-m-r vaccines.so doctors are encouraging every one else to get one mme. johnson county public health says the public doesn't need to worry, but it's always a good idea to know the symptoms. symptoms. "mumps usually starts like a lot of things, fever, achy joints, sore throat, the real-tell-tell sign with mumps is you start getting swollen glands."he says washing your hands, not sharing water bottles and cleaning door knobs will help prevent the virus from spreading.james says, as a precaution it's best to get the shot, even though most of the patients have been between 18-24. 18-24. public safety tells cbs 2 news, the explosion at shady rest motel was a suicide attempt.they say on of the residents blew out the pilot light in a stove several hours before lighting a cigarette, washington county.the shooting followow a high speed chase that ended at a gas station in riverside.investigators tell cbs 2 news, a suspect rammed his car into a johnson county deputy's cruiser.the trooper shot outthe car's back tire to keep the suspect from getting away.three people were taken into custody.the iowa attorney general's office determined the shooting was an appropriate response because the deputy's safety was in jeopardy. in cedar rapids, wehrenberg eatre will be honoring veterans with a special discount on veterans day.all active and retired members of the military who present a valid military id will get into one move for the price ofof chchd.the discount is good for all movies on the day. city leaders in iowa city citywill discuss a possible new cable operator in town. cedar rapids-based im-on communications has spent months evaluating the prospect of offering services to iowa city.at the november 10th city council meeting, leaders are set to vote on whether
